Best Restaurants, Bars, and Hotels for a San Juan Capistrano Staycation | Eater San Diego

"I usually join the quick-moving line at JD Flannel Donuts & Coffee because it's an exceedingly friendly doughnut shop; their popular varieties include a buttermilk and sour cream old-fashioned flavored with nutmeg, a vanilla cake doughnut studded with blueberries and enrobed in Meyer lemon zest glaze, and a raised maple doughnut topped with cayenne and black pepper-seasoned bacon." - Candice Woo

Google
Tried JD Flannel donuts for the first time.spent over $35 for 6 donuts, and it was totally worth it! My kid loved them, and even though I’m not usually a donut fan, I absolutely enjoyed the Sea Salt Butter & Maple donut .it’s incredible. The staff is super friendly, and Christine especially made us feel so welcome and appreciated. It’s a 45 minute drive for us, but I’ll definitely be coming back. The quality, taste, and service make it worth every mile

My new favorite donuts in SoCal. The severs are so friendly. Donuts are delicious and are a perfect combination of flavor and texture… without being unnecessarily overwhelming or just loaded up with sugar or toppings. Tried four donuts. First 3 were amazing. I like yeast donuts but the vanilla bean was just ok for me. - old fashion cake donut - Blueberry fritter - brown butter sea salt - vanilla bean I need to come back here again soon.

Update to review: visited a second time and was lucky enough to catch a fresh batch of banana foster fritters which blew me away. Perfect level of sweetness and hints of banana without the mushy flesh, and the donut had a fluffy sourdough interior. Because it was fresh it also didn’t taste as oily as before. Bumping up to 5 stars! ———————— Donuts are great! Not sure if I agree with the title of best donuts in SoCal but the employees were super friendly, welcoming, and patient even though I was super indecisive! The donuts are a little too oily for my liking though, and the berry donut had good texture but the jam was not thick enough.

Nice little donut shop here in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. It was quite busy when we arrived around 1:45 pm. It was recommended by some friends. Staff were friendly and helpful. We picked out a few donuts to bring back home for dessert. I picked the s’more’s cake and to be honest, I didn’t finish it. I guess it wasn’t what I was expecting. But my wife picked a dulce de leche (I believe) and she loved it. I’m pretty sure their donuts are good, I just didn’t pick the right flavor for me. Definitely will have to go back and try again. There is plenty of parking here, it’s a shopping center! I would recommend, just be sure of what you want I guess hahaha!

Google
Are these the best donuts in CA? No. Are these the best gluten free donuts in CA? Yes JD Flannel has been on my list for trying their donuts for at least a year. I live in LA so it's a 2 hour drive and difficult to come here for fresh donuts in the morning. So when the opportunity came to stay in Laguna Beach for a night- I woke up 6 AM on a Sunday to get to JD Flannel when opening. Service was fantastic and very friendly. They were very welcoming and great about recommending donuts. Store is clean and efficient. Here were my favorites: 1) Chocolate chipper- This is like a chocolate chip muffin but denser in the form of a donut. I loved the batter. 2) GF Cookies and Cream- Similar to the chocolate chipper in that there are mini chips inside which made it fantastic. Only difference is its chocolate batter instead of vanilla. Its not so chocolatey that it feels overwhelming and you would never know it's GF. 3) Brown butter sea salt. I am not a brown butter person at all when it comes to donuts but after this was recommended as their top seller, I tried it. It will win you over. Donuts I was mixed on or did not like. Blueberry lemon- I am usually a lover of all things blueberry lemon especially cakes but this combo did not work. Chocolate raised- A bit disappointing in terms of chocolate flavor. Too bland. Apple Bear Claw- Huge fan of bear claws but this was ok. Too dense with the thick filling. GFV Apple Cinnamon Sugar- Usually a huge fan of all things Apple Cinnamon Sugar but my favorite in this category is Archie's Sunday Donuts in LA. JD Flannel's was a bit too fried. Overall these are very solid donuts but my winner still for best donuts is Oliboli in Tustin. Theirs are less dense and more light and fluffy. Similar in that they aren't heavy that will make you feel sick after eating them. Oliboli used to do cake donuts and when they did- they were superior to JD Flannel. However since they no longer make cake donuts- yes JD Flannel has the best cake donuts.

Very sweet people and delicious gluten free donuts! The chocolate gf donut on the s’mores one was the best. The vanilla sprinkles was a close second. They have lots of different options and change their flavors each month!

Google
We have been longtime sidecar fans…BUT We found this gem which is closer to our home and has top-notch customer service! The donuts here are absolutely unbeatable. The whole family loves them. These are in fact-even more fresh than sidecar! We are now officially JD flannel donut enthusiasts. Just picked up a large order this morning because we have out-of-town guests and co-owner (Dave) was handing out shots of coffee to customers waiting in line. We love JD flannel and its people!!!

Yelp
Our family was in town and our friend recommended JD's as their favorite donut shop and I'd read about it on Yelp's best of list. We stopped by on Halloween around 8:30am. And this places lives up to the hype!!!! The staff were all dressed in costumes and were super helpful in answering questions and making suggestions. Both founders, J & D were there working the line. We wanted everything but settled on the brown sugar sea salt, raspberry corn cake donut, blueberry crunch, apple pie donut and the blackberry fritter. And a hot chocolate, vanilla latte, drip coffee and americano. There's some bar seating inside, but we sat at one of the tables outside. All of their donuts were amazing and tasty. Our favorites were the brown sugar sea salt (BSSS) and the raspberry corn cake. The BSSS was warm and literally melted in your mouth. Our group of four unanimously agreed that it's probably the best donut we've ever had. Even my wife, who is not a big donut fan raved about it. The cornmeal in the Raspberry corn donut gave the cake donut a nice crunch. The donuts are really well balanced. We love this place and will be back!!!

Yelp
They fixed the juiciness problem, every doughnut I had was good. I got the seasonal ones, like blackberry fritter, apple pie, and raspberry corn cake, so I got what I deserved. Just kidding, they were great. Reading some other reviews, looks like others got juicy/greasy donuts. So it's YMMV. The corn cake was the standout, it was like cornbread with flavoring. Servers were sooo nice. Solid doughnut shop. Around $5 each.

Yelp
Absolutely a must stop if you want some of the highest quality, freshly-made gourmet donuts in the area! I usually don't mind a drive for creative and highly-raved donuts and I can finally check this one off the list. At this level of gourmet-ness (I know that's not a real word), it comes down to personal preference as to what kind of flavor and texture you like in a donut. There are other notable donut shops that are exceptional and they are 5 stars in their own right. What also makes this place special is the customer service. The folks behind the counter and going around cleaning all take pride in their work and making sure people are having a great experience, such as providing donuts stickers to my kids or asking us if we enjoyed our donuts. Sometimes that's the sweetest part.

Yelp
I last came to JD Flannel in June to try their highly acclaimed donuts. According to to yelp, this spot has the best donuts in California and I agree with the consensus. The donuts are actually worth $4-$6. Vanilla bean donuts actually taste like vanilla bean. When you get their "pure maple" donut, it has a maple glaze that has a sticky consistency that reminds me of a candy-like texture. So good. These glazed donuts were light and airy. All of the donuts are handmade and made in small batches. When I ate the donuts, they were still crispy and warm and it's evident that they use high quality ingredients. Their cake donuts are also incredibly craveable. I had their Brown butter cake donut and it was buttery on the inside and crispy on the outside. This is located right off the 5 freeway off Ortega Hwy in San Juan Capistrano. It's the perfect spot when we wake up early to drive to SD for a weekend trip! They do have limited hours here, so make sure you plan ahead and check their hours before you come in!

Yelp
Had to try JD Flannel Donuts after it was named California's best donuts by Yelp and it did not disappoint. May have over-ordered but wanted to try so many flavors. The donuts are not too sweet and free of artificial colors, preservatives and flavors. Feeling slightly less guilty eating 3 donuts in one sitting. :) My favorites were Dutch apple pie, vanilla bean, boysenberry, blackberry fritter , and the brown butter sea salt (this one is more savory than sweet). The raspberry corn cake was interesting. It's like a not so sweet corn bread with hint of raspberry flavor. I got a vanilla latte, so good and strong! Staff is very friendly, and there's batches of fresh, warm donuts coming out throughout the hours... yum!

Yelp
These are some of the best donuts I have ever had! I came on a Saturday morning around 7AM and there was a short line going out the door. They have an outdoor seating area where many people were enjoying their donuts and coffee. Seems like a very popular local spot. Small, busy, and friendly. There were so many interesting donut flavors, it was very hard to choose. - Smore's cake donut: 9.4/10. Beautiful and delicious!!!! This is the best cake donut I have ever had. It was soft, moist, and fluffy. Chocolatey and sweet, but not excessively that I could eat the whole thing in one sitting. Usually, I'm not a fan of cake donuts because they're usually dry and dense but this was PERFECT. - Banana fosters fritter: 8.8/10. Also super yummy! I love how this is so creative and unique, since I have only ever had an apple fritter before. The banana flavoring is not artificial and there are banana chunks in the donut. Crispy, sweet, and unique! - Maple Bacon: 7.8/10. This is my go-to donut flavor. This one was packed with bacon bits. Usually other donut places have a small sprinkle of bacon, but this place was very generous.

Yelp
I'm not in the San Juan Capistrano area often, but this location was recommended to me by some yelpers spreading the greatness of JD Flannel Donuts. Boy, I was not disappointed. There is a personal twist to all the donuts made here. You think you're going to get a typical glazed donut, but really the vanilla glazed makes the whole thing taste like an incredible vanilla bean icecream. My personal favorite was the banana chocolate chip. These are donut shaped, but don't taste like your typical fried donut even though they are. Definitely stop by and buy half a dozen or more. They're great for sharing!

Yelp
**July 2025: Wednesday Morning Visit** I saw multiple reviewers praise JD Flannel and naming it "The Best Donut Shop" in Orange County. The city of San Juan Capistrano is a little out of the way for me, but I decided to add it to my pit stops for my annual San Diego Comic Con pilgrimage . My friend and I arrived around 10amish and there was already a line of 15 or so out the door. Thankfully, it moved rather quickly and we were in the store within 7 mins. We ordered three donuts to share: Brown Butter Sea Salt (staple) and two seasonal ones Donut - Blueberry Lemon and Banana Chocolate Chip. They were slightly warm and did have a nice cake-like consistency. Among the three the Banana Chocolate Chip was my favorite. The banana made the batter moist and the chocolate chips give it a nice melty bitter sweetness to it. I definitely think JD Flannel would probably rank among top 3 donuts that I've had; however, I'm not really a donut connoisseur so I personally wouldn't go out of my way to get them. However, if I'm in the area I'd be open to see what new seasonal flavors they have.

Yelp
I LOVE YOU! hands down one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. Everyone was super friendly and working their darn hardest. There was a line out the door due to the popularity of this place, but well worth the wait! Now to the important stuff, the raised donuts were next level. It had the lightness and texture that you're expecting but the flavor ... I liken it to the flavor of a cake donut! It was just different and wonderfully unexpected. It's located in a plaza so plenty of parking, there's a few tables outside in case you want to indulge immediately. They have a small selection of drinks, their iced latte are nice and strong. Looks like the flavors rotate - can't wait!!

Yelp
Ever been to a donut shop so good you went 2 days in a row? I shamelessly admit that's exactly what I did when I discovered JD Flannel Donuts and Coffee this week. The line can be long especially in the mornings on weekends, but it moves quickly and the service is efficient and friendly. The actual donuts itself?? OMG! I have NEVER had such good donuts before!! They're not too sweet, not too dense, fluffy, warm, and just the right chewiness. I really enjoyed the Dinger, Vanilla Bean, and the Brown Butter Sea Salt donuts. The Dinger has a nice chew and hint of bitterness from the coffee/chocolate favors. Absolutely loved it!!! And the Vanilla Bean and Brown Butter Sea Salt donuts were otherworldly too. Their coffee drinks are also quite good also. It nicely compliments the sweetness of the donuts. Lastly, parking is plenty and free out front. It's right off of Rt 5 / Ortega Hwy and easily accessible from Niguel Rd as well. There are also some indoor seatings and outdoor seating areas available.

Yelp
After hearing that JD Flannel was named the best donut shop in California on Yelp, I knew I had to stop by and see what all the buzz was about. My husband and I arrived just before closing on a Saturday afternoon, around 1:45 PM, and there was still a line out the door which is always a good sign. At first glance, it looked like they were nearly sold out, but the friendly staff quickly welcomed us and let us know that fresh donuts were on the way. Everyone was so warm and personable, which made the experience even better. I didn't catch her name, but a kind woman behind the counter brought out our donuts once they were ready and took the time to chat with us. Thought that was a lovely personal touch. The Bananas Foster Fritter was still piping hot when I took my first bite, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. It reminded me of brioche French toast, soft and warm on the inside with a perfectly crispy edge. The raised and cake donuts we tried were just as impressive. The staff's kindness and the quality of the donuts make this place truly special. I only wish they were closer so I could visit more often! If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. These donuts (and the people behind them) are top-notch!

Yelp
I have been dying to try this place for a while, and my donut dreams came true today! I love Sidecar and Oliboli, so I wasn't expecting too much difference, but this was spiritual-level goooood. Oh. My. God. The service alone blows both other places OUT of the water. Think Trader Joe's worker meets Disney cast member. If we had more people of this caliber in values and kindness in the world, it would most definitely be a better place. "Authenticity" means a lot to them, and it truly shows. Shout out to all the workers and especially Kristin for exceptional service and warmth today! If I were feeling down, I'd run here for a sweet treat and the service to uplift my spirits. The brown butter sea salt donut and blackberry fritter (seasonal) were my all-time favorites. I also tried the Dinger, blueberry lemon, and banana chocolate chip. They were all very delicious. They use quality ingredients. The blackberry fritter had real blackberries in it as well as in the blueberry lemon--real blueberries. The brown butter and sea salt tasted like a warm yellow cake inside. Each donut had its crisp on the outside and its softness on the inside. They are truly delightful and scrumptious. I didn't think we could finish all of them outside on the patio, and boy, was I wrong! I bought another brown butter sea salt to take home for later. There's a little bit of seating inside, and they have a cute patio by a nice tree. They also have a water bowl for dogs. I wish I lived closer because this place is high up there in my favorite donut spots! I highly recommend! I can't wait to try the coffee and the raised donuts next time!

Yelp
Hot, fresh, and artisanal! From seasonal specials like Pumpkin Spice to traditional Buttermilk Old Fashioned, JD Flannel offers a nice variety. My husband and I stopped by on Sunday, 10/5/2025 around 9:45AM, and the line was out the door and down the sidewalk. Although we were 15th in line, we only waited 10 minutes. I line went though quickly as they had a good number of staff working (making donuts, restocking the counter, packing mobile/online orders, brewing espresso drinks, and packing walk-in customers' orders). We ordered 3 donuts to share and a strong iced coffee (in lieu of cold brew). The Browned Butter Sea Salt was delicious yeast raised donut coated in a delicately sweet browned butter glaze and a pallet cleaning sea salt - definitely a must order. The Buttermilk Old Fashioned was hot & fresh - lovely crunch, nice tang from the buttermilk, and surprisingly light. The Blackberry Fritter has a solid blackberry glaze on a traditional fritter. We loved all 3 of the donuts and look forward to trying some of their more elaborate donuts. There's a handful of tables outside of the establishment for those who want to immediately enjoy their donuts with friends and family. Ample parking in the shopping center.

Yelp
This has been on my bucket list since I've seen many food shows and articles about this being the best donuts in California. I was out in the area in the morning and decided to finally make that stop. I knew it was the right place because there was a line out front, but it seemed to move quickly. They actually came out offering free samples of their coffee so that was a nice treat and surprise. It's probably the prettiest and cleanest donut shops I've ever been in. But the prettiest things are the donuts. The colors on them look so vibrant and fresh. More importantly, they are delicious and clearly the best donuts I've ever had. I ordered one of almost everything. I don't know how they do it, but they are pillowy and moist and don't have any of that fry taste you get at most shops. Our favorite was the brown butter sea salt, which is a flavor I've never had in a donut. It was super light and tasty. The banana chocolate chip was also a favorite, but started moving into the dessert category. The Dinger rounds out the top 3 and I did eat it as my dessert later in the day. I can't wait until my next visit and see what new seasonal choices they have.

Yelp
Lots of parking in a shopping plaza. A bit hard to find as instead of JD all you see are DONUTS COFFEE and you expect some generic shop but nope really a hole in the wall. I heard somewhere this was rated oc #1 donuts on ig reels and had to see the hype. Im not super into donuts, but I get the hype. It was worth the try! Barely any line when we went but later on a huge line formed, partly because they have small space inside, but there are multiple staff assisting and looks like a huge operation inside. The staff are very friendly and attentive, told me to take my time and got me anything I needed without waiting much. The donuts here are amazing. Compared to typical donuts both cake and raised have a thick fluffiness vs dense dryness. It truly taste fresh. Pricing is around typical - medium luxury donut (4-6) Brown butter - what i came here for. Again the cake isn't crumbly its like a fluffy moist cake. I like it because its salty and not too sweet, but not sure if it hit the brown butter notes for me Vanilla raised- dont underestimate the basic ones. If you or your kids love ice cream- thats exactly what the top taste like. The donut is thick and fluffy , very soft pillow Banana chocolate chip- if banana bread was a donut. Not too sweet, moist, banana with a hint of chocolate very homely Oreo cake- on point. Their chocolate ones aren't too sweet. It actually taste like oreos, they nailed the slight cold/icy tasting of the frosting with the oreo cookie part that isn't too sweet but really authentic Old fashioned- so surprised by this. I've never had an old fashioned that was fluffy. I expected them to be crunch and dense. Definitely changed my perception and still had a light crisp to it. ** Blackberry fritter- top contender. You have to try it especially if its fresh and warm. It looks amazing and huge but it'll definitely redefine a fritter for you. First off, on point description- it is cinnamony with a tart hint of blueberry. But also, you get layers crust and fluffy, a slight chew compared to the other ones and the blackberry Berry flavor is distinct and taste like the actual fruit. Whats most surprising is the bottom is crusted quite well so you get a medley of three textures: crunchy crust, light fluffy without being crumbly, and slight chew at the end. Not too sweet. Overall, I see the hype. Get lucky or there might be a long line. Price is reasonable for the variety they offer. Very limited seating, popular with families. Some outside seating. Great way for a Sunday date with some coffee!

Yelp
JD Flannel Donuts is the place to go for donuts in San Juan Capistrano--and it's hard to beat. The donuts are consistently high-quality, creative, and delicious. Whether you're into classic flavors or something more unique, there's always something new to try here. Today we grabbed a banana chocolate chip donut, which tasted like the perfect mix between a banana muffin and a donut--with a rich chocolate drizzle on top. We also had the buttermilk old fashioned, which was crispy on the edges, soft inside, and full of flavor. Pro tip: we usually get a box of five or six and cut them into pieces to sample a bunch--perfect for sharing and trying more flavors! The presentation is a bonus too; the donuts come in a beautiful, branded box that makes it feel a little more special. The staff here are always so kind and quick--they greet you with a smile and move the line along efficiently without ever making you feel rushed. The service is consistently great. The ambiance is casual and charming, with a small outdoor patio that's clean and peaceful--great for enjoying your treats on a nice day. Parking is free and super easy since it's in a plaza, which is always appreciated. While I didn't try the coffee, the donuts alone are reason enough to keep coming back. Whether you're craving something fruity, indulgent, or totally unique, JD Flannel always delivers. One of the best donut shops around, hands down!

Yelp
If I came back here, it would be for the service more than for the donuts. When I first got here, I was waiting for my friends, and one of the guys came out to clean the tables and asked me about my day. He also asked some others how they were enjoying their donuts. It was so wholesome and the interaction was so genuine. Our cashier was awesome - very energetic and he was just such a friendly guy. Later, a woman came out and asked us what donuts we got and how we liked it, as well as what our plans were for the day. Some of the donuts change month over month, and I knew I wanted to come here for the blackberry fritter, though some other flavors were tempting. Blackberry fritter: 8/10. Very good at first bite. Amazing value given the size it is compared to other donuts. I love the blackberries throughout the donut Boysenberry donut: 6/10. Super fresh delicious glaze but I don't like cake donuts. It's less sweet here than other places and lighter than other places, but I still can't get behind it. This is a biased eating. Old fashioned donut: 7/10. Cake donut as well but surprisingly, I liked this better. It could be the texture, or maybe it was a few minutes fresher, but I preferred this over boysenberry. It's a very relaxed atmosphere. Very limited seating outside but the weather was nice and we had shade, so we preferred to sit outside. They have knives, forks, and napkins, which is appreciated since they know almost everyone shares their donuts.

Yelp
Hands down the best donuts I've ever had!!! Every time I'm in the area I stop by for donuts! I wish they were open everyday because it's so delicious and I can't help myself. I get one of each flavor every time because sometimes they change it up. My favorite is the brown butter sea salt that is a MUST GET DONUT!!! My whole family loves it, some of them eat gluten free and they have lots of flavors which is very nice! Sometimes there is a line but just wait because it goes by super fast. They're super friendly and always very helpful if you're new. MUST TRY!!!!!

Yelp
I have heard about this donuts shop from several of my friends and I was excited to finally try it after running errands in the area. There is ample parking in the shopping center and there is outdoors seating and some small seating area indoors. When I entered I was instantly greeted by the friendly staff who took the time to explain to me all the different flavors. I ended up getting the boysenberry, brown butter sea salt, a monthly special one that is cookies and crème and a chocolate ganache donut. The donuts were cake battered and it was very moist and light. The flavors were flavorful without being overly sweet, the way I like it. The donuts were a bit pricey but I think the size of the donuts and the quality of the donuts justify the cost. I really enjoyed the donuts and will be stopping by to get some whenever I'm in the area!

Yelp
One word, WOW! This small donut shop serves up the best donuts I've had in a very long time. The shop is open for limited hours and the line is out the door. It's in a strip mall but hard to miss. Tried their classics to see how the donut was and must say, the donut is light & crisp. The glaze is not too thick and just the perfect amount of sweetness. Their popular seller is the brown butter with sea salt but I prefer their Boysenberry or Blueberry Lemon. Menu changes every month here. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
These donuts... so so good! The service always excellent, and the shop is clean and welcoming. I know I've reviewed JD Flannel's a lot but it really does deserve a shout-out... they started out solid and have worked hard over the last four plus years I've been going there to really excel in what they do and provide... it's been awesome to see!

Yelp
For the love of donuts!!!! Oh my goodness these donuts are so fresh warm and delicious ... We got there a little after 10 AM on a Friday and they were just pumping out The Best most pure ingredient donuts . With smiles on their faces. So stinking friendly. These donuts are the real deal we sampled six , and will be back to sample six more The apple fritter bear claw , blueberry lemon, maple, triple chocolate(one of my favorites) the old-fashioned(also one of my favorites) and we washed them down with a number #1 iced coffee. Very dog, friendly very people friend friendly plenty of seating on the outside and a little bit of bar seating on the inside. (they also have a restroom.) and make sure you grab plenty of napkins.

The service was great, the line moved quick, and the donuts were pretty good overall. The boysenberry flavor would be one I'd be back for, the brown butter sea salt had one spot on it where it was oddly saltier than the rest but was good otherwise, and the buttermilk old fashioned had a nice texture to it. The one that I was hoping to enjoy but didn't was the gluten free coconut donut. Unfortunately it was both harder and drier than the others, almost as if you're eating a day-old donut while the rest are fresh.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts/desserts I've had in awhile! The cake donuts are served warm and they're perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. They're not oily or heavy. The blueberry lemon donut had plenty of blueberries and the lemon icing was the right balance between sweet and tart. The brown butter sea salt was rich without being too much and salted well. On a Saturday morning around 10am, it wasn't too busy and our server was very kind and helpful! Can't wait to come back :)

Yelp
Let me start by saying this: the donuts here are amazing. Truly next-level. But what really sets this place apart--and why I'm writing this review--are the people behind it. This is a family-owned shop, and you can feel the warmth the second you walk in. The owner himself came out to chat with us while we were sitting outside with our dogs. Not only was he genuinely friendly, but he also took the time to say hello to our pups, treating them like guests too. That kind of kindness sticks with you. He actually didn't even tell us he owned the place when he walked away he walked in the back and then I found out., I just thought he was a person that was visiting eating donuts. In a world full of chain stores and rushed transactions, it's so refreshing to find a place where being cordial and kind comes first. And the fact that the donuts are insanely good? Well, that's just the sweet, sugary icing on top. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor: stop by, grab a donut (or three), and enjoy a place where good food and good people go hand in hand.

Yelp
What an incredible experience from start to finish. The service was warm and friendly, even though there was a line of people waiting to place orders. We even got a sample of the sea salt and brown butter donut. We had the chocolate rise, blueberry lemon and maple donuts. These are not you average donuts, every bite was flavorful and i can tell they used quality ingredients. These donuts blueberry lemon was the perfect blend of sweet and tangy. These donuts are the best i have ever had and will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Came in here for their amazing donuts. The store was clean and feels very cool inside. Service here is excellent and staff are very friendly. Definitely would be back as it's a great place if you are craving a donut or family time with kids. Thank you so much Adrian, Bri, Purity and manager Natalie for making this visit exceptional!

Yelp
These were some of the best donuts I've had the pleasure of trying. The staff being friendly was just icing on the top. Their chocolate donut was simple but pure bliss. My favorite had to be the smores chocolate cake donut. That was divine. Definitely a must try!

Yelp
JD Flannel was a great experience. The donuts had good flavor and were fresh. The ambiance of the store was homey and the story of the owners was heartwarming.

Yelp
What can I say? JD Flannel listens and delivers. I've always been a fan of their Blueberry Lemon ($4.75) donut, and while there were a few times when they didn't have enough blueberries, the owner personally reached out to let me know they'd make sure the donuts are always filled with fresh blueberries. Now, every time I get one, it's packed with blueberries, and I'm one happy customer. I love coming here for a donut that's a step up from your typical pink-boxed donut shop. Their donuts are always fresh and well-made. There are seasonal flavors each month, and they even offer a few gluten-free options. The staff is always friendly, and the owner is often around to make sure everyone is having a great experience. I absolutely love everything about JD Flannel and still wish it were closer to me so I could come every day!

Yelp
Very fresh, cakey but light inside while crispy on the outside donuts. We were obsessed with these donuts! If you go near closing time on a weekend there won't be a line but it won't taste AS fresh. Boysenberry: good flavor and slightly tart Brown butter sea salt: classic with the brown butter and salt shining through I didn't get to try the cinnamon one but I heard it's great! Service and ambience: friendly and there is outdoor seating. Parking: plenty

Yelp
This spot has been on my radar for a while. I usually do reviews in Orange County and LA but I don't get down to San Diego that often. I was heading that way today and made JD Flannel a definite stop. It's a small shop, very friendly, you can tell it's family owned. The girl working the register was super sweet and gave me a great rundown of all the donuts. I ended up grabbing three... the s'mores donut, the bacon donut, and the banana fritter. All three were slightly warm, probably just made, and the texture on all of them was incredible. The s'mores donut was insane. It had a graham cracker crust, vanilla breading, and this big perfectly toasted marshmallow on top. It gave off serious campfire vibes, sweet and smoky with a little crunch. The whole thing just melted in your mouth. The bacon donut was packed with flavor. Loaded with crispy bacon on top, and the maple glaze pulled it all together. There was even a filling inside that gave it an extra hit of sweet and savory. If you're into that maple bacon combo, this one hits hard. The banana fritter was like an apple fritter's cousin. Same fried exterior, sticky and crunchy, but filled with soft banana that almost caramelized inside. If you like banana anything, you'll love this one. It's gooey, rich, and honestly pretty addictive. All three were standouts. JD Flannel knows what they're doing. Everything felt fresh, handmade, and dialed in with care. Definitely worth the drive.

Yelp
We spent the day in SJC and had to stop by this donut shop that was voted Best in CA by Yelp. I wouldn't say they are the best according to my taste buds and preference but they were good. It's gourmet donuts with special flavors in line with shops like Voodoo, Donut bar, Sidecar and Nomad. I prefer a simple sugar or glazed donut so I picked something as close to simple as possible. We got the blueberry lemon and the buttermilk old fashioned. The buttermilk old fashioned had that glazed exterior and crispy edges. Flavor and texture reminded me of eating donut holes. The sour cream made it extra moist. The blueberry lemon was the opposite, it was soft, dense like cake batter with a very distinct sweet and tart flavor from the blueberry lemon zest glazed. They got gluten free options and coffee choices. There were no lines when we arrived. The owner was there greeting people. Plenty of parking in this plaza.

Yelp
Freshest and most delicious donuts in town! Great service and seating outside for enjoyment. Boysenberry is my absolute fave!

Yelp
I don't crave donuts very often. Cake donuts, never. So why did it drive to JD twice in a week from Long Beach for cake donuts? Bc they are THAT good. Particularly the brown butter sea salt. Not only are their cake donuts amazing, the customer service by everyone is phenomenal. Special shout out to Bridget (I hope I remembered her name correctly). She was there both times I visited and was very patient and friendly (I took forever to pay-I'm the worst). The store itself is clean and very pleasing with a nice outdoor seating set up. I am contemplating moving to SJC just to be closer!

Yelp
Delicious, freshly made and great flavor. The limited (compared to a "traditional" donut shop) selection is nice, with a mix of "cake" and "raised" donuts...I could have chosen any of them. The Brown Butter Sea Salt is very good...moist and buttery inside...only a very faint taste of salt. The Banana Chocolate Chip had an amazing texture and flavor. Iced Cafe Americano was excellent. Service was efficient and friendly. We got 3 donuts to go initially, and then got a 4th. I was surprised we were not given one of their nice boxes, because each donut was put into a separate cardboard container and then put in a rather unstable fashion into a plain paper bag with no handles. Somewhat inconvenient at a missed marketing opportunity. I am looking forward to returning to try some of their additional offerings!

Yelp
What a wonderful donut shop - but to call it a donut shop seems like an understatement. Fresh, perfectly made donuts that truly melt in your mouth. They have classics like Old fashioned and glazed - but also unique flavors like their blackberry fritters (so good!!!). Located in a shopping plaza - this hidden gem is definitely a place to seek out. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all the flavors and ingredients. The interior is cozy and airy with an outdoor patio as well to enjoy such a treat. I look forward to becoming a regular visitor!!

Yelp
Clean, welcoming, and care. You can see the passion that the owners poured into this business to make it one of the best donut stops in OC. Tried the cinnamon glazed donut and it was delicious! Some uncovered seating outside.

Yelp
I love this place very much because the donuts here are super fresh, sweet, and delicious, amazing service, nice music, and I will definitely come back.

Yelp
I came across this donut shop on instagram and was intrigued when their website said they don't use artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. You don't find a lot of donut shops like that nowadays so my family and I decided to go take the trip to SJC and check it out! We really enjoyed it! It's a bit pricey compared to other shops, but I think the quality of the donuts makes it worth the price. I'd say it's very similar to Sidecar Donuts...including their donut box! But if I had to choose, I'd go with JD Flannel over Sidecar! Donuts weren't too sweet and the flavors were really great. I enjoyed their old fashioned buttermilk donut and my kids really liked the sprinkles. I'm looking forward to going back and checking out their other monthly flavors!

Yelp
A friend was really craving a JD Flannel gluten-free donut on an icky rainy day so I drove to San Juan Capistrano to get whatever she wanted. Upon arrival I sent her photos of the available gluten-free donuts. The gal at the counter let me know that even though there were only the raspberry, coconut caramel, and chocolate out the others are coming out of the fryer so she could have any of them. So she ordered maple, raspberry, and chocolate. JD Flannel claims theirs are the best donuts in California so while I was looking at the rest of the donuts, I ended up buying myself an old fashioned vanilla, Boston cream, and raised chocolate. The donuts are pretty pricy compared the average donut shop but it was an icky rainy day and I deserved a treat too. Before the freeway on ramp, after the first bite of my raised chocolate donutC I realized this place is no average donut shop! Within 2 miles I could not stop myself and ate the entire raised chocolate AND the old fashioned donut. I've literally never in my 55+ years of loving donuts have I had one better than these. Let's see how long the Boston crème lasts. I can't forget to mention the customer service and vibe. The employees were all ages from (maybe)19 to (maybe) late 60s--everyone was so genuinely friendly, kind, and eager to help. It's way out of my way but I'll definitely be back for a treat!

Yelp
Spiritual. Exactly what I told Dave and his wife when I met them today. I must say these were some of the most delicious donuts I've ever had. Don't get me wrong everyone has their fav donut spot; mine is Oliboli in Tustin. But after today I might have to reconsider. Anywho I was greeted with one of the warmest Hellos and from that point was it made trying this place more exciting. I mention my affinity for Oliboli and the owners wife mention "I hope you enjoy ours as much." Knowing I was a first timer she went above and beyond to grab me one of their signature donuts a Brown Sugar Glaze right off the cooling rack as they just pulled it out the oven. Grabbed my donuts and black coffee. Ready for the the first bite. And my God, I was speechless. It was absolutely Devine. Honestly the best donuts in Souther California ever; maybe best donuts I've ever had and trust I've had my fair share of donuts down here and around California. I Highly highly recommend make the drive.. it'll be worth it!! @jdflanneldonuts KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO and KEEP BEING THE GEM OF SJC.. I love what you do from the hospitality to the simple but warm aesthetic/ ambiance to those melt in your mouth creations of joy! Amazing job!

Yelp
Came at the end of the day so there wasn't much option. Very friendly service-the person helping us was willing to explain the flavors and everything-given that it's our first time. If I were to live nearby, I'd definitely come back-the doughnut were fluffy and light but yet so delicious with every bite.

Yelp
The donuts here were a big disappointment. Not just that they were over hyped, but actually not really good. Such a bummer as I was so excited to finally try them. The first donut I had was the creme brulee. The sugar crust was interesting and fun to try, but not actually delicious. And the filling was icy cold and unpleasant. I waited an hour to eat the rest of it because I thought it might be better if it wasn't so cold, but it was actually worse at room temperature. The donut got soggy and the custard flavor just tasted of one-note nutmeg. This may be the first fresh donut I've ever encountered that I didn't like. My second donut was the old fashioned, and it was definitely better! It actually had a really nice nutmeg flavor. If they had called it something like a nutmeg ring cake, I probably would have said it was great. But they called it an old fashioned donut, so I was expecting the dense deliciousness of one with fabulous craggy edges. Compared to that, the spongy thing I got was a big letdown. I couldn't help but wish I'd gone to a mom and pop donut shop and gotten one of their old fashioned donuts for a fraction the price. A part of me wonders if maybe their other donuts are better? But I don't think I'll be bothered to come back and find out.

Yelp
Greeted with a friendly warm welcome every time! These donuts are like warm little pillows of happiness.
