The Best Minneapolis and St. Paul Steakhouses | Eater Twin Cities

"A supper club in the truest sense, folks come from far and wide to enjoy the steaks and convivial atmosphere of J.D. Hoyt’s. If you’re looking for a steakhouse that leans casual, this is a great option. Classic cocktails like Aperol spritzes, Moscow mules, and daiquiris and Cajun-influenced meat and seafood can be enjoyed in the photo-clad dining room or the patio. The steaks here are hickory-charred." - Natalia Mendez

The steak thick, well-seared, and juicy—definitely cooked with care. The side of mixed vegetables adds a healthy touch, though they appear a bit oversteamed. The jus or au jus sauce on the side is a nice touch for added flavor. • Crab Cake Dish: This crab cake has a rich, crispy crust and is served with a fresh-looking side salad and lemon wedge. The sauce (likely a remoulade or creamy mustard blend) is attractively served and looks rich and flavorful. : Everything is plated simply but cleanly. The food looks hearty and satisfying

This restaurant has been around forever and I’ve never been there until now. It is all the trappings of a traditional supper club and the grill is actually in the dining room, which is quite cool. Of course we had to have the pork chop because it’s their signature and it was decent but not exceptional. In my mind overall we enjoyed our time there, and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal.

Google
Absolutely top notch. This is the type of place you would go to impress clients just as much as propose to your fiance. The atmosphere is premium, the staff is extremely professional and friendly. We had a wonderful experience. The menu has so many amazing options: 1. Definitely get the pig wings...2. the house pork chops are to die for. Cooked to a nice medium, still juicy and the Cajun seasoning was spot on. Drinks were great as well, even finished with a Brandy Alexander to end the evening. Definitely a place to come back to.

Friday night's Supper Club Chronicles kept me in Minneapolis, Minnesota and went to JD hoyts. I started with the jambalaya appetizer and my friend got some steak bites. For the entrees he got a steak oscar where I got two humongous Cajun pork chops. It was my first time here and it was pretty good.

Google
I’m shocked there’s anything but 5 star reviews for this place. The service was top notch which paired with some of the best pork chops I’ve ever had. The ribs fell off the bone and had a delicious smoky flavor. Great drinks as well but the pork chops really stole the show. Had better flavor than most steaks at other places and was hands down one of the best pieces of pork you can get.

Opposite Attraction

Google
There was nothing to complain about and if someone does they are lying the customer service was excellent the atmosphere was beautiful and relaxing the food is unmatched. Our waitress was Annie and she was exceptional 👏🏾 the owner stopped by our table to make sure everything was going well. If I could give this place 100 stars I would happily. Thanks for the amazing service and first time experience. Will be back.

Revisited an old favorite recently! Happy to say they are still offering great service and delicious food The cocktails were tasty and pretty colors Buddy bowl is prob my fav thing to order here The lobster risotto was a nice change from my usual steak order The Cajun tenderloin tips were really good but not a fan of the dipping sauces The Cajun pork chop got the least fave bite at the table was a little dry and lacked flavor-unusual as this used to be their signature dish! Could have been an off day Old school supper club vibes here - think old school New York dining scene

JD Hoyt is the epitome fine dining! The food is amazing! Whether you choose Fresh and juicy salmon, or a thick mouth watering steak, you will be impressed with the detail in which they put into your meal! They have a great selection of white/red wine to enjoy with your lunch or dinner. The appetizers are even delicious! I recommend the cornbread with butter and syrup and the garlic cheese bread with the corn chowder…yes, that’s just an appetizer!!! The environment is classy, romantic, and cozy. This is a place where you can make reservations with your significant other and come dressed up or you can bring the family as it’s also kid friendly. The owner is really nice, he walks the restaurant speaking to patrons and genuinely making sure that you have everything that you need, he will also bring food to your table personally. You’ll be glad you ate here, you’re welcome in advance lol!!!

Yelp
From start to finish, our night at JD Hoyt's was flawless. We used valet parking, which was a total breeze and made arrival stress free! To start the evening, I had an Aperol Spritz that was perfectly balanced and refreshing. We shared the Cajun onion rings, which were crispy, golden, and had a really pleasant little kick, sooo yummy! For my meal, I kind of put two apps and a single side together and it was the best! I went with the wedge salad and then the Cajun tenderloin bites, which came with three dipping sauces. All were good, but the béarnaise was easily my favorite. It's rich, creamy, and a perfect match for the spice on the tenderloin. I paired that with the garlic mashed potatoes, which were smooth, flavorful, and freaking perfect. My husband had the evening special: two bacon wrapped pork chops served with brussel sprouts and cornbread mashed potatoes, Yes, you read that right. I never would've thought to put those two together, but the texture and flavor were unreal, like cornbread with the comfort and consistency of mashed potatoes. I kept sneaking bites off his plate. The brussel sprouts were cooked just like we liked them. The garlic cheese bread they serve is also not to be missed. He easily had enough left over for another full meal. Since it was my birthday, we were treated to a complimentary dessert, a strawberry shortcake made with cornbread. LORD. That dessert alone could have made my night. Sweet, slightly savory, and totally unique, every bite was better than the last. I am so sad that i didn't get a picture, it was beautiful the way they layered the strawberries and the whipped cream, blueberries and sprig of mint, chef's kiss! Our server Kate was impeccable. Friendly, attentive, and made everything feel special. She really tied the whole experience together and made it one of my favorite birthday dinners ever. Thank You Kate!!!! We're already planning to come back for our anniversary, I can't wait to return!

Yelp
We came here on Valentine's Day, the VDay snowstorm of 2025 wasn't going to keep us from celebrating our loooove! But we sure did appreciate the valet service! This was our first visit and we love a good ol supperclub. JD's was pretty modern though. The salad is extra, the relish tray is extra (and expensive at $20), sauce is extra. Everything is extra. I liked their creole flare, especially when it came to my crab cake, which was delicious and I'm an east coast girl, so I'm fussier about my crab cakes. The steak was good, but honestly not swoon worthy. We got one of their "famous" buddy bowls, which is red beans and rice with sausage and maybe beef? Baked with cheese on top. It was okay but again, not clear why it's famous. I brought it home to eat with eggs the next day, thinking it would be better, but it wasn't. However, the garlic cheese bread was real good. Real, real good. And the paper plane drunk was refreshing and delicious. Overall JD's was good, nothing bad about it and really no complaints. I suspect their seafood items might be where they shine more than the steaks. I almost went for the scallops or fish and regretted not doing that. Ambiance is nice, not too loud and not too dark but still romantical and adult. Plus tv's for the couples who don't want to talk the whole time. Enjoy JD's!

Yelp
Neat place & atmosphere. Ate at bar and the bartender was great! Prime rib Normally comes with just a side of veggies, but I paid up charge for asparagus! I also added onions, mushrooms, and peppers!

Yelp
AMAZING!! Honestly, I am from the west coast, and I have not been to many supper clubs, but I loved JD Hoyt's - the staff was incredible and the owner was so friendly (going around greeting the customers). I thought the service was attentive, and gave great advice on dishes to get. The place has a lot of seating, and felt very nice. We got the relish dish to start, lobster risotto and grilled scallops. All the dishes were fantastic - highly recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely the best restaurant in the Twin Cities and our favorite by far. Fresh, amazing food, great ambiance, unbelievable service and an owner that truly cares for his customers and has for many years. Pat stops by every table to check on people and to make sure they are having a great experience. We LOVE JD Hoyt's!

Yelp
What a fabulous steakhouse located in the North Loop My friends and I enjoyed everything the wedge salad was fab as well as the STEAK SPAULDING, an 8 oz Filet topped with crab cake and béarnaise sauce served with asparagus and hash browns Pretty incredible Cocktails were great and since we were celebrating our friends birthday, the restaurant included a free dessert!

Yelp
Such a nice place to go eat after a twins game! The servers were so wonderful and kind! Food was amazing and had great portions, the restaurant was a little dark but had some fantastic artwork! Also caramel cheesecake is the way to go for dessert!!

Yelp
Sadly, no photos to share, but we had a wonderful experience at J.D. Hoyts this past weekend. Everything was wonderful, from the friendly staff, to the ambiance, to of course - the food. We ordered the famous Buddy Bowl and a salad to start. Both came with the famous garlic cheese toast. Everything was delicious! For our entrees, we got the famous grilled pork chops, which I highly recommend. We also ordered the barbecue chicken and the Cajun pasta. You honestly cannot go wrong with any of the food here. There's going to be something for everyone!! Our server was amazing and so was the other restaurant staff. They really have an amazing way of making guests feel just at home. Already looking forward to our next trip to Minneapolis to visit again!!

Yelp
I'm a fan: let's be clear. But in my book customer service isn't about how things are when things are great--they're about when things go sideways. I had an overburdened server this night who missed several opportunities to take my drink order. I had to butt in to order :( My dish was uncharacteristically disappointing: for a place that features seafood the lobster risotto was cheap. Dotted with lobster like an after-thought. It should not be listed as an entree because if I want lobster, I would have ordered something more substantial. Server saw I was disappointed, said she'd take it off. Didn't. Sigh, whatev. WORST PART OF IT: I reached out to their staff to let them know and after I told them, there was no response. I totally don't want a credit, but a non-response is so lazy that I assume that they didn't want to deal with a negative experience. I even mentioned 'I wanted to tell you in person instead of a bad review on Yelp'. Welp.

Yelp
By far the best restaurant in the Twin Cities! Amazing, high quality food, large portions, great ambiance and most of all INCREDIBLE service led by the owner Pat who personally visits most tables. That aren't enough stars for this amazing restaurant!

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants anywhere I've been. Food is always great! Service is excellent and Pat the owner is so good at making you feel welcome and special! Oh did I mention how great the pork chops are!!!

Yelp
Alright, so J.D. Hoyt's is a Minneapolis staple/classic. I can't argue that. The atmosphere is all there for an old school dining experience. I'm the odd guy that hunts down cajun pasta dishes - so that's why this place was on my radar. I went with my family for Christmas dinner... Don't judge. The group ordered a variety of dishes - ranging from steaks to lobster tail, and I hit up my long awaited cajun pasta. Maybe I had built up the expectation too much, or maybe I have just had a few really good cajun pastas at other places... But this just wasn't my favorite. Honestly, it was one of the lesser that I've had. I like heavy cajun/spice. I'm also a little critical of the noodle to meat ratio. This pasta just didn't have the flavor/spice level I seek out. And to be honest, the sausage wasn't to my liking. I was told after eating that I made a mistake in not getting the cajun porkchop. Apparently it is worth the visit alone. Maybe next time. Also - as others have mentioned, be prepared for the fact that the restaurant is nestled cosily into the same building as a strip club. Moms, sisters, or dates may be caught off-guard that you are taking them to (Christmas) dinner that offers that kind of entertainment so nearby.

Yelp
Best ribeye steak I've ever had! A perfect juicy medium rare! Veggies were tasty also! Affordable beer and reasonably priced drinks too! Service was awesome! I sat at the bar since I was by myself and the service and attention was fast and courteous! Best steak in the Twin Cities! All the other food looked amazing also!

Yelp
Their food was SO good. There's a lengthy wait and heavy crowd on the weekends. I got the cornbread which was delicious! As well as the chicken and crab cakes. ALL delicious. I got the Alfredo pasta (half order) which came with a yummy garlicky buttery toast. Everything was flavored so well. If you are crowd sensitive I'd pick a mid week midday to come. I really was very uncomfortable with just how full it was. It's a very nice place for a family dinner or catching up with friends. I'd say it's somewhere between casual and mild dressing up.

Yelp
Best pork chop! Easy parking! Friendly service! When I say the pork chop fell off the knife #easy it was incredible and tasty. I wish I knew I could order pick up last year! Thanks to the Timberwolves organization for all the local recommendations

Yelp
I had a wonderful meal at J.D. Hoyt's sitting at the raised bar watching the NCAA Women's semi-final basketball games. Junior was our server/bar keep, and he was as entertaining as the game. J.D. Hoyt's is an urban supper club that's as authentic as any of the supper clubs in rural Wisconsin. All the food is good, some dishes better than others, but you will always have enough to eat. Portions are enormous. My Wedge salad was the size of Uranus but tasted much better. The hickory chicken was delicious. J.D. Hoyt's is not gourmet, innovative, or trendy, but that's not their objective. They do what they do with aplomb. I'm in Minneapolis once a month, and I will visit J.D. Hoyt's every time. BTW, if you're at the bar, ask Junior about Lenny Kravitz. You'll enjoy the stories.

Yelp
I should've known the moment we pulled into the strip club parking lot that this restaurant was not going to be what I thought it would be. It was my friends birthday and he wanted to go to Manny's Steak House. We ended up going with JD Hoyt's because we didn't want to spend that much but still wanted to have a nice dinner. I read great reviews and we decided to give it a shot. I'm not sure if it was because we're all in our mid-twenties, but I immediately felt like the server wasn't taking our table seriously. I kept this thought to myself because I thought I was crazy but later in the night someone else brought it up. That sucks. My friend, the birthday boy, ordered a medium rare steak for $60-80. When the steak came out I swear I saw it twitch. That thing was rare. SO rare. I care about very few things in this world and one of them is steak. Steakhouses should be able to deliver medium rare for $80 if Applebee's can do it for $20. The worst part was that he mentioned it to the server and she just walked away. She came back right after with a plate to put the steak back on the grill. No words were exchanged. As if it isn't awkward enough to send food back. We get the steak back. It's still red enough that even I wouldn't touch it. He sent it back again & decided he would be done with the whole ordeal. At this point we've all decided we will probably never come back. It was a weird experience and our food was ehh. For a steakhouse this expensive, I would hope everyone is getting good service, legitimate table cloths, and amazing steak. The drinks were good (bonus star!) and the steak was comped but I'd save your money and go to Crave. The food is leagues ahead for the same price.

Yelp
Always the best! Our grown kids only want to go to Hoyts or Manny's for any celebration. Pork chops and grilled prime rib are terrific. Our favorite dessert is the grilled banana

Yelp
Ye good ol' business dinner. Lots of people, drinking a lot of alcohol, talking very loudly, spending a lot of money... with someone else picking up the tab. Perfect... I was all set not to like this place - primarily because someone else chose it, without consulting with us first (when you eat out as much as we do, you start to really hate bad restaurant experiences). But luckily they did their research on this one. Because I ate a ton of those cajun tender tips (it was like a neverending supply), and then topped it off with what turned out to be an excellent bone-in ribeye. And then I even shared some baby back ribs with someone else in our group who was eating business dainty... F*ck that- we ain't paying... pass the tenders! Anyways, just to say we enjoyed the food, drinks and ambiance of this place. Very tasty- a good option in the area. Now, pass the tenders!

Yelp
Came here for a late birthday celebration. It is located right next to Deja Vu showgirls. There are metered street parking or valet. We came late at night on a Thursday so there were plenty of metered spot nearby. It was a little on the darker side inside the restaurant. Even though google says it opens until 1 am, it actually does not. We had reservation at 8pm and by 9pm they were starting close up for the night. We were not rushed by the waitress at all but I think they just closed the doors. There were still a couple tables left with us so we didn't feel too weird being the last one. Just wanted to point out they do charge extra for shared plate here! This means if you plan to share an entree (like steak) you will have to pay a fee for the extra plate. Something about decorating the plates but they do give you extra sides on the plate I think. I do have a photo of the shared plate. Started off with the mock tail Faux-Jito drink. It was supposed to come with A berry of choice but actually came out with no berries and I had to request for it. Overall not a bad drink. 3/5 Complimentary cheesy garlic bread. Actually pretty tasty. Prob would taste a lot better with marinara sauce for me. Started off with crab cake. Comes with 1 or 2 per order. We ordered 1 to share for 2 people. It's quite big. I would recommend to share and order another appetizer. I really enjoyed this and the sauce on top. 4.5/5 Cajun tenderloin tips - comes with 3 difference types of sauce. The tips are tender and the sauces were good. My fave is the more yellow sauce. 4/5. Lobster Risotto - comes in different size. We got the small at size because we ordered a lot of food for 2 people. It does come with pretty big lobster chunks. Would recommend to get. If you love risotto might want to upgrade to the bigger size. 4/5 Cajun hash browns- crispy and yummy. Your typical hash browns. Didn't taste much of the Cajun part though. Bone-in Ribeye: we got medium and it was perfect pink the way I like it. Entrees does come with seasonal veggies but you can upgrade to asparagus and other specific veggies for 2-3$ extra. We updated to the asparagus. It came with 2 onion rings and a couple of cantaloupe. Our shared plate did come with cantaloupe and a good portion of extra asparagus as well. So the shared plate charge is not bad honestly. I really enjoyed the steak. It was big and after so many appetizers and sides we had to take some home but well worth it. 4/5. They do not have any birthday promotion due to Covid but did give us a Candle with my chocolate cake lol. Overall, my first impression of this place was its a more causal restaurant than dress up. So dress casual when you come here. So I thought it wasn't good to be as good but turns out to be great. I would definitely come back. Portion is great. One disappointment was payment. You pay through a machine there but it doesn't tell you the tax charge or if they charge you extra for service there. If there was no additional service charge then tax was more than 13% which is crazy for restaurant. It was closing and late so we just said whatever but the receipt we got via text did not break down what the charges for in terms of tax and/or service. If I go back, will definitely have to bring it up.

Yelp
This was our first time eating here. It was truly exceptional. There were 4 of us, we split a Buddy Bowl and Pig Wings for appetizers. Both were incredible. The Buddy Bowl is an absolute must. Our mains (Steak, Cajun Pork Chops, and catfish were perfect. Elena did an amazing job serving us. We will definitely return on our next trip to Minneapolis.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was wonderful our server was attentive and checked on us often. Got the standard cheesy bread samples and the plates each had food particles on them and had to be taken away and replaced with fresh ones almost like they were stacked to removed and accidentally placed back on the table (bo biggie but damn). The pork chop was good but a little dry this time. The veggie medley was crunchy as hell and in the past it has been tender with a bit of texture. My partner ordered the fried Cajun catfish entree with mac and a sweet potato. One piece of catfish in an entree for a man is crazy as hell lol. The Macaroni was flavorless and a little watery. I like J.D Hoyt's but they need to tighten up. The ambiance and lighting is always nice for a nice romantic date. I just wonder when I make reservations why the only option is the main dining room...

Yelp
A classic for a reason, no better way to spend a night than JD Hoyt's. Steaks and pork chops cooked to perfection and bar tenders that are naturals in making your evening a joy (especially Junior)! One of the great restaurants.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
It's alright but it could also be that I didn't order their specialty which seems to be more focused on meat than seafood. It's a cozy spot with very attentive service. Ordered the grilled charcoal scallops with Jamaican seasoning. The size was pretty average relative to the portion of the vegetables they gave so it was a little sad to look at, but it was mainly the seasoning that hit me. Even though I asked and they said it wasn't spicy, you're dealing with someone like me who thinks hot cheetos is spicy and the scallops required washing down with water for me. Again I could've ordered the wrong thing but I wasn't all that impressed. The lobster risotto is a nice side though. Good texture with chunks of lobster. Recommend if you're looking for a small bowl to complement your main dish.

Yelp
I try to be stingy with my 5 Starts, because I think it means that the business is the crème de la crème of this particular type of establishment. This is especially true when I'm out for a good meal at a higher end restaurant.... I just expect more. In this case, I'd add a gold star to the 5 if I could. Everything about our experience tonight was great, from the moment we walked in the door to the goodnight and thank you as we left! JD Hoyt's is an old fashioned dinning experience. Even though the place is very contemporary, you just feel like you are in an establishment that the show Madmen could have filmed. Highballs, Martini's and Goblets of Wine fit right in here. After ordering our meal, the BEST part came when a basket was placed on our table containing a bunch of JD Hoyt's Famous Garlic Cheese Toast. I could have eaten the whole basket! Unfortunately, I did eat too many of these amazing cheesy morsels and was pretty full well before the rest of my meal arrived.... But it was so worth it! I would also like to rave about the service! Everyone was so polite and helpful from the doorman to the random waitress that pointed me in the right direction when I was looking for the bathroom. Our server tonight (Anne) was excellent! She was so friendly, attentive and fun. It is so nice to have a server that seems to enjoy her job..... JD should be thankful to have her. My son, his girlfriend and I certainly enjoyed her service! All of our meals were excellent. And I thought they were pretty readable priced. The serving sizes were very generous, and there was definitely food left to take home for tomorrow. Definitely at top choice for me in Minneapolis.

Yelp
Stopped by their for a couple of beers as I was meeting someone. Hopping place and busy. Didn't get a chance to eat there but would try it out. The staff was friendly and the service was good.

Yelp
My first time at JD Hoyt's could have been better. I felt bad for our server Kate. She was very accommodating but her support staff wasn't great. One of our steaks was served medium rare, but requested medium well. My prime rib was served medium but requested medium rare. A rubber band was served in a cole slaw dish and we were asked to move tables as our dessert was being ordered. I think they charge upscale prices for average food and service. It was the first time any of our party of four had been asked to change tables mid meal. There were no concessions made for the issues that we had to deal with. I guess for me this is a one and done visit to JD hoyt's. For $500 I know we could have had a much better experience elsewhere.

Yelp
Five stars for the excellent wine selection, nice ambiance and delicious pork chop. Great place for special occasion.

Yelp
Everything at this restaurant is so good! The service was good. The vibe is business casual. The menu is steakhouse cuisine with a cajun flair. They are famous for their buddy bowls and pork chops. Here is everything we got rated: Pork chops: 5/5 juicy, delicious, amazing Mashed Potatoes: 4/5 good mash Onion Rings: 4/5 not an onion ring girl but everyone was raving Mac and Cheese: 3/5 decent but nothing to shout about Buddy bowls: 4.5/5 really good Cheesy Garlic Toast: 6/5 mindblowing Raspberry Creme Brulee: 3.5/5 Grasshopper: 5/5 sooooooo gooooood

Yelp
We liked the experience here so much that I'm rating their 3 star food a 4 overall. I cannot say enough about the stellar service here. We were greeted with a friendly face at the door, our server was delightful, inquisitive, and overheard us talking about going to a show and made sure that we would be in and out before the show started. A man who I think was the manager popped by a couple of times and was a pleasure to chat with, even grabbing us our check as our server was super busy with a huge table. To the food... I was really excited to try the cheese toast - but it just tasted like cheese toast from every other pizza place that also makes cheese toast. My partner really enjoyed his steak and crab cake, and ate every bite of his food including the hashbrowns. I was pretty jealous. My grilled chicken was topped with some unseasoned veggies and pretty average barbecue sauce. I was also wishing I had gotten a potato side as the broccoli was just wet and sad. Overall I think I would come back for a drink and an appetizer because the ambience is fun and the service is so good.

The pork chop really was the best I've ever had and I'm 68 and from New York so have eaten in a few places. Onion rings and crab cake also excellent. Room is an authentic Rat Pack situation. Service was professional and helpful. If you're staying in North Loop, definitely dine here one night.

Yelp
Wonderful service here at J.D. Hoyt's Supper Club! There's a bar if you're feeling just a drink or you can enjoy a meal inside the restaurant. A great place for big parties because the restaurant is pretty big. They have a bunch of meat and creole options for food. The apps were the best part of the meal because it was delicious. Cheese bread comes with the meal and it's pretty yummy too.

Yelp
I came here tonight with my adult daughter before a MN gopher basket ball game to enjoy a cocktail and a light meal. Service was perfect, food great and ambiance so very classic. We just wanted to experience another supper club and it did not disappoint.

Yelp
After searching through fully booked restaurants that serves steak for Valentine's weekend, I finally found that JD Hoyt's had some openings. A couple weeks later and it's time to eat. My girlfriend had the Valentine's special: lobster tail, 6 oz filet mignon, mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts. It also came with corn bread. I had the 18 oz bone-in grilled ribeye with asparagus entree, which also came with cheesy garlic bread. For extra sides, I got the garlic mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. To top it off, I had my ribeye spicy style, which is their own spicy sauce. To start off the meal, we had the caesar salad, corn bread, and cheesy garlic bread. The Caesar salad was like every other Caesar salad, a good healthy start to a hearty meal. Their corn bread was delicious. Pour a little of their honey on the corn bread, and it takes it to another level with that additional sweetness. The cheesy garlic was also delicious; cheesy and garlicky goodness. It wasn't toasty, but soft in a good way. Not having much of a sweet tooth, the garlic bread was my favorite starter. Up next, our entrees and sides. My medium rare bone-in ribeye was delicious. Meaty and fatty goodness, and was exactly what you would expect from a good ribeye. Again, I had it with their spicy sauce. Their spicy sauce was drenched over the ribeye, and tasted exactly like A1 sauce, but on another level with little crunchy textures from the black pepper bits. It is packed with spice, but not spicy heat-wise. Steak and A1 sauce, in my opinion, goes along really well. However, being that the ribeye was covered in the sauce, made every bite sort of... a lot to handle as time went on. My advice would be to order the sauce on the side, not sure if their other sauces would feel the same. The asparagus that came along with it was decent. The sides, mac and cheese and garlic mashed potatoes, were also decent. Good additions, but nothing to praise about. My girlfriend enjoyed her meal. Again, her entree was the Valentine's special: 6 oz filet mignon & lobster tail, brussel sprouts, and mashed potaties. Overall, we had a good time at JD Hoyt's. The service was nice and we were treated well.

Yelp
Still a classic and one of my favorite spots to eat in Minneapolis. In fact, its one of the first places I ate at when I first moved here and have been a regular customer 1-2 times / year for more than two decades now. It just feels so warm and cozy when you come inside and its very welcoming. For those who are new to this place, back in the day, the entire place was just the 6 tables and the bar with the small charcoal grill back in the corner where it still sits today. Along the way, they expanded taking over the adjacent building and adding a lot more tables. The quality and menu has remained pretty much the same although the prices have crept up over the years as have all the steak places. Another sign of quality is that the same staff has been there for a long time too. In fact our waitress told us she's been there for 18 years so again, they must be doing something right to have that kind of staff retention and it shows in the service with full water glasses and a professionalism that is far from the norm in the typical revolving door world of restaurants. As for food - I must admit I'm in a bit of a groove as I always start with the old-timey "Wanda's relish tray"- enough for 3-4 people and then a juicy grilled steak. For a side, I like the cheesy "Mike's potatoes" while my wife favors the crispy hash browns. The pork chop is pretty famous too if you want something other than a steak. You really can't go wrong with this place. They've got a valet service out front ($10 added to your bill) to make it even easier.

Yelp
Great selection of menu items so is a good spot where there is something for everyone. Service was great and love that they offer valet parking.

Yelp
Came here for a nice dinner, after finding that this place was known for their pork chops and steaks. I came here with my BF and we decided to split the majority of what we got, to be able to try a few things. Every order it seems comes with cheese garlic bread-- man, was it good too! We started out with the house salad, with the recommended peppercorn parmesan dressing. Dressing was tasty and creamy. Lots of toppings and what appeared to be homemade croutons. We ordered the Porterhouse steak (32 oz). There were many options of things to add to the steaks, where we went with the garlic mushrooms. It came with a veggie medley that we upgraded to asparagus for a small charge. We also got the mash potatoes and had them loaded after being informed that was an option. The steak came out exactly as prepared and was very good. They use a charcoal grill for all of their meals, so the steak had that classic smoked taste. We had a very large portion of the asparagus and mushrooms, so much so, we had to have an additional plate because there wasn't enough room on the plate, with the larger steak. The mash potatoes were excellent, might be the best I've had in a long while. The meal had so much flavor! Needless to say, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and had a few things to take to-go. I wish we had room for dessert, because everything sounded so good (especially the bread pudding). Hopefully we will visit MN again and be able to try that! Our waitress was super kind. I can't remember her name but she had a cute tie on with pigs everywhere (since they are known for their pork chops). She had asked if we had been there before, which we hadn't, so she explained how everything worked, what they were known for, etc. really took the extra step to make us feel welcomed. Our hotel was right downtown, where this was a short 10 minute walk to this restaurant. Lastly I loved all the decor in the place. Interesting art hanging from the ceiling and walls. The outside and the black and white tiled floor made me think it was once a 50's diner, that was remodeled into a steak joint. (I'm a sucker for those black and white floors).

Yelp
I had a blast at this place out on their patio all by myself. Great old school music, great drinks, great crowd. A little bougie and upscale. I ordered a crab cake, the buddy bowl, and 3 jalapeño flavored margaritas that had me a bit tipsy stumbling back to my hotel. Everything was cooked to order, fresh, and well-seasoned. I was so full that I was unable to order the gumbo. Thank you Minnesota!

Yelp
Food was great, service was great. On had one concern and that was the max and cheese. Wasn't served hot/fresh so wasn't the best and sent it back. Otherwise everything else was great and owner was very kind

Yelp
The service here was awesome, you have plenty of helpful servers who are more than willing to give you a full rundown of their menu and tell you the most popular items. They are servers who truly know their product so. The building is nice and cozy but bustling for sure. Highly recommend for a meal to celebrate something since most dishes were so big you had to split! For sure check out the pig wings when you go as well! They were phenomenal

Yelp
Stopped by JD's to meet a friend, who wanted catfish and a salad, but got asparagus. When I got there, he was sipping on a beer at the bar, where i joined him and ordered a Side Car. Ambiance: Busy, high energy, mixed crowd, and well kept. Service: Valet was efficient, I think $10; bartender was cool... professional, quick, answered questions. Food: I tried my friends fish and it was fried well, nice & crisp, but not flavorful. Asparagus was good, cooked well, not over cooked, just right I forgot about JD's and this put it back on my radar.

Yelp
Ate here yesterday and already planning a trip back. Food was great, service was great. Started out with the cheese bread, corn bread, and crab cake. Cheese bread was good, but cold. Corn bread was fantastic! Crab cake was ok, it was big and served with hollandaise sauce so it was a bit soggy in the middle. Lobster was delicious! Also got a side of Mac and cheese (without bacon) and it great. Oh and bees knees drink was wonderful although I felt like it was served in a kiddy cup. For dessert I got a Pink Squirrel. I've been wanting to try one since I was a kid watching Roseanne. It was pretty good. Also got the grilled banana dessert. OMG..... Don't leave without ordering the grilled bananas with ice cream! After all that I was ready to give birth to my food baby. Oh, and service was super friendly and wonderful!

Yelp
Bang, bang Finally was able to get a table. This was good, quality, food. Yo, the portions were on-point. This place is comfort food w a seafood vibe, and a dust of southern roots. While it wasn't super cultural, they are trying with the goodness! If you agree drop

Yelp
What a great place! I enjoyed every aspect of our dinner...Food, Service, drinks and atmosphere. I thought the menu was well priced, it's not cheap By any means but it's definitely not too expensive for what you get. Our server was awesome, super friendly and patient with our large group and had great recommendations on food and drinks. We had the Spalding, pork chops, lobster risotto, calamari and rib eye. Everyone loved their food! The lobster risotto is amazing, super creamy, hood amount of lobster and not a bad price at $10. My 10oz spalding, (filet with crab cake and bernaise) was perfect medium rare and melt in your mouth. Pork chops were done right too, really juicy and even better the next day for leftovers. This is the kind of place I could come back to over and over. I like the split level bar and classic supper club feeling. It was nice to see it really busy on a Saturday night, a great classic place for dinner in the middle of trendy North Loop.

Yelp
We decided to stop here for dinner one evening before a show since it was close to our hotel. I really had high hopes for this place! It looked like a cute neighborhood spot from the outside and the reviews seemed pretty good. The place itself is actually really cute. It's got an old school feel to it with some kitschy decorations hanging from the ceiling. Our waitress was very friendly, although the service was terribly slow. My first red flag was when I opened the menu - so many options! Too many options - meaning they didn't exactly specialize in any one or few items. Just had a ton of random things on the menu that weren't very cohesive. To start the evening we ordered some cornbread as an appetizer. I have to stop here to give the cornbread a proper shout out. It was DELICIOUS! The order was very large and it was accompanied by whipped butter and syrup. Additionally it came out warm and smelled amazinggggg. Unfortunately the bus stopped here when it came to good things showing up at our table. Beep beep. We ordered the salmon with vegetables as well as one of the steaks and a few sides. Vegetables = undercooked. Salmon = overcooked. Garlic mashed potatoes and lobster risotto sides = decent. Meal as a whole = bland. Also it seemed as if the service was getting even slower as the evening went on - imagine molasses in January. By the end of the evening I had to venture out to find our waitress to take our check. I think it's safe to say we won't be back. I was rooting for you J.D. Hoyt's. Womp womp.

Yelp
I think we found our new favorite dinner spot in Minneapolis! My fiancé and I are in town often because we go to a few vikings games every year. I used to check a few days out for reservations and they've always been booked out so this time I made a reservation I think about a week in advance and I'm so happy we did! For starters, the garlic cheese toast they give you for starters is INCREDIBLE! So flavorful and rich. Salads were great and were the perfect size for one person. As for entrees, they're obviously a steakhouse (and their steaks were incredible) but that Cajun pasta was amazing! Putting the andouille sausage in it as well chicken was such a nice touch. I'm really particular about pasta being Italian and I loved this dish, so unique! Also, tried their steak Spaulding which is a filet with a crab cake and both were incredible! Perfectly cooked and the hash browns / asparagus and sauce on top was the perfect touch. My fiancé got their grilled Cajun pork chops that they're well know for as well. Those pork chops were so good and full of flavor. For being busy, the service was great and everyone was super friendly. We walked from our hotel but they do have valet parking if needed
