Sometimes, you gotta get away from the city to experience some good food. I can not review the market side, but the diner was excellent. I ordered a shrimp po-boy and sweet potato fries. Way bigger portions than I was expecting and was honestly one best po-boys I've had. If you're traveling in the area for work, definitely stop by.

Google

My boyfriend Joshua lives in Chalmette. Everytime I'm visiting from California, I asked for some hot sausage from Jeanfreau's. The best hot sausage I've ever had. The spice and flavor is an explosion in you mouth. Also, my brother loves their hot hogs head cheese so much, I have to bring at least 4 to 6 packages home. He was mad I gave one to a friend lol.

Google
Came in asked for a brisket. Trimmed!! I asked the guy if he knew how to trim it correctly. You know. Trim the Mohawk, the deckle down. You know make it a nice easy ready to season brisket. They guy snapped at me and said . I’m a butcher. I know how to do it!!!! Rookie the brisket home. The deckle wasn’t trimmed. The Mohawk definitely wasn’t trimmed. It wasn’t rounded off. He sliced into the meat leaving flaps everywhere. So now when you cook it the flaps will curl up. My fault I should have inspected this “Butchers” work before taking it home. So service was rude and butchering was half az. That’s why a one star.

The best roast beef po'boy I ever had was at JeanFreau’s a delicious masterpiece, overflowing with tender, juicy beef smothered in rich gravy and nestled in a perfectly crusty French bread. Each bite was a delightful balance of flavors and textures, making it an unforgettable culinary experience that left me craving for more. This was a 17 napkin rating on a half dressed 😉🫴🏾

Google
One of the best places, if not the best, to get meat in "da parish" and their California chicken salad is bomb

Cynthia Rogers

Google
Joey's food fresh n delicious, But his Grill really needs to be open longer and on Saturdays!

Google
Horrible food!! Soft rubbery bread practically no meat!! The two halves of bread were all I could see. I asked for a dressed sandwich, and it was butt naked!! $44 dollars for $4 worth of food!! And I tipped generously. First and LAST time I'll ever patronize this place. Buyer BEWARE!!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. I've been here twice. I had the Monday special in red beans and fried pork chop with a piece of cornbread. The red beans were fantastic. It was a simple recipe where you could taste the red beans themselves without over powering it with Cajun seasoning. The texture and silliness of the beans were spot on. The fried pork chop was still moist and coated just right to give it a nice crunch. Simple homecooking done perfect. My wife had the roast beef po boy which she said was just right on the gravy flavor. Again not overpowering on Cajun seasoning so the taste of the beef would stand out. This was truly a great lunch before our long drive back to Texas . Get there early cause the locals flock to this place

Yelp
Everything the service, the staff, the food atmosphere hospitality I would recommend for you to go there and have a beautiful time

Yelp
Definitely a locals favorite, this place always seemed packed! I got a roast beef Po-boy with gravy. About one of the best sandwiches I've ever had

Clark M.

Yelp
Called for beef tallow and they had no clue what I was talking about I would stay away based on the fact they have no knowledge of food

Yelp
Great little 1/4 sandwiches on a platter for only $7. But, didn't have any pastrami for sale, nor did they have Italian dry salami. Not sure about the restaurant part, it was already closed when I went in.

Yelp
That was a really good Roast Beef sandwich. The meat was piled high fresh Veggies and the bread was good. Anyone in New Orleans can and will tell you it's that you have to have a great French Bread as the foundation. Not sure what bread it was but it was good. The place is very noisy and pretty crowded so I took mine to go. The eating area had just a few tables and everyone there seemed to be a regular. That's a good thing. I also picked up various home made Sausages and other Louisiana staples. Great little Meat Market. I'll be back.

Yelp
If you're looking for great poboys look no further. Roast beef was amazing. Just the right amount of gravy and mayo to make it just right. My son had shrimp poboy and loved it. My husband had the cheeseburger and gave high reviews.

The flavors exceed expectations, a Gem in the rough! Well worth the visit! Everything made fresh, taste of home cooking, depending who was in your home! Post dessert later, I did not leave any room this trip! The service is order at counter, sit.It comes to you with a smile, self service drink fountain. Located inside J's meat market/ grocery/ and cafe. Definitely reminds me of the mom and pop got it all grocery in all neighborhood's, very friendly atmosphere.Great lunch's, sandwich's,and you can grab something to fix at home later.Worth a visit while in Chalmette.Next door to Our Lady of Prompt Soccer.

Best smoked andouille I have ever had! Use it on many dishes in my home - red beans, gumbo, jambalaya, etc.

Yelp
First ever visit driven by hundred times for work. Had time to kill so hit up yelp and the positive reviews drew me to stop. The people are so friendly . Old New Orleans style grocery store with the most delicious California chicken salad. Grapes and pecans with flavorful chicken . Will be back for the service and quality.

Yelp
This place alone makes a small ferry ride form NOLA worth the ride.. Excellent meat, excellent customer service and prices so low, you'll slap ya momma.. My Ribeyes were gorgeous, cut to order and so damn good for a fraction of the cost of any meat market in NOLA .. Trust me, this will be your go-to butcher for meat hands down!!

Yelp
I was staying in the area while working and couldn't get enough of this place. Great selection and great service. No surprise this place is always busy. The roast beef poboy is the best around.

Shelita W.

Yelp
I'm very upset about my visit today. I was in line paying for my items being purchased. A female came to me and said you using foodstamps. So my response was I'm being stereotyped because I'm an African American female you come and ask me that. I have never felt so humiliated then the audacity for her to get a attitude when you were wrong. Don't assume all african american people have food stamps. Then the whole store heard you asking me this question.

Yelp
This is for the many times I have worked in the parish and had excellent lunches at Jeanfreau's.

Yelp
The grill had good poor boys, but the roast beef was a little on the tough side. I tasted my Dad's barbeque beef, same situation. They were out of shrimp. We purchased some sausage from the butcher shop, as well as Mardi Gras Dip and crawfish pie. I think the key is to get food to go from the grocery. They have a regular stuffed artichoke and one with crab that I will try next time I go.

Yelp
Fast friendly service. The cheeseburger on french and shrimp Po-Boys are delicious. Haven't tried much else as I'm always satisfied with either of those. The red beans looked yummy, may have to get that next time. The lunch rush starts early, we arrived around 11:30.

Melissa M.

Yelp
I just had the BEST cheeseburger po-boy I've ever had at Jeanfreau's. Meat is ground fresh there every day and believe me, the differencee can be tasted. Will be going again.

Yelp
Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to try the deli here, but I can vouch for the quality of the meat and the excellent service I have gotten every time I have gone to the butcher shop here. They make their own sausage and hog-head cheese on the premises, and have a good selection of other standard items (steaks, pork chops, ribs, chicken). Where they have gone above and beyond for me has been when I have come in with a special request. Every time they have gone out of their way to find what I'm looking for and get it to me for a very good price. This place is a terrific alternative to your standard supermarket chain store for your meat-type groceries.

Yelp
Great Poboys. So far i have had there Roast Beef Poboy, and the Veal cutlet Poboy and damn they are good. I will admit i use to pass the place up all the time because for some reason i thought it was Meraux Food Store. A friend of mine pick up a couple Poboys one day and told me there food was awesome. My wife and i decided to try them out while we were out n about. When you walk in the left side is the Restaurant and the right side is a Meat market / mini grocery. They had a bunch of local workers already sitting eating all kinds of good smelling foods. At first i couldn't decide but then i seen a Fried Veal Cutlet Poboy, so i got that and my wife got Meatballs & Spaghetti with a side of Fries and Onion rings. We didn't wait long and the lady that brought out our order was extremely friendly. On the way home i eat the onion rings, they were ok. The Fries were the generic plain ones that many restaurants serve. When i rolled my Poboy open the smell was amazing, and you could see how well they filled my Sandwich. I like mine with just mayo and yellow cheese, and damn was it amazing. You could have taken the Veal off and made a meal by itself. My wife had the Meatballs & Spaghetti, she wasn't that impressed, the meatballs were small and dense, the sauce was chunky and runny. Now it didn't taste bad at all, but wasn't that good either, i ended up eating the leftovers the next day. I know my Sandwiches have been great, my wife kept sneaking bites here and there when i wasn't paying attention. I can't blame her it was that good, damn as i write this i am starting to crave another Veal Cutlet Poboy. The Deli / Meat Market had some good sales that we are going to try this week, i will update after we try em out. So if your in Chalmette and craving a good Roast Beef Poboy or a Veal Cutlet Poboy you should definitively try this place out.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best places to eat around! The restaurant side closes at 3PM Monday-Friday but stays open till 4PM on Saturdays I highly recommend their Muffulettas, Roast Beef sandwiches and veal Po boys pretty much anything you get is guaranteed to taste good. Everything is freshly prepared with a full time butcher and deli staff constantly supplying the restaurant with fresh product. This restaurant/grocery is a destination on its own with a little bit of something for everyone! PS: don't forget to try their homemade hogshead cheese or sausage ~yum

Yelp
Definitely a Fan of Jeanfreaus. I was strictly committed to the deli, butcher, and market area for the past four years unitl this year. I finally gave the Cafe side a try and we are now frequent customers to the cafe as well. Take notes because the getting is about to be good! Cafe side- Mostly, I am not impressed with the catfish I must say, since I am a catfish loving galI have to put that out there. But oboy! They have a great selection of other poboys on loaf or bun thats to die for. Highly recommended poboys/bun items 1. Swiss melt Burger/or poboy. Huge, fresh beef, onions, house made roast beef gravy. Feeds 2-3 2. Hot Sausage poboy/burger- house made hot sausage recipe(drools) 3. Any Burger item because this is a butcher shop too, so you are getting the freshest meat. Must try items on Deli, market side- chicken salad, the best house made hog head cheese(my fav is the jalapeño), house made roast beef(my fav is the garlic), fresh hot sausage patties, mardi gras dip. All most try items. They also carry a selection of Flour Power Bakery items, which I feel in love with because of Jeanfreaus. The chocolate mouse cake is perfection. They accept EBT in the butcher/deli/market side. Enjoy!

Yelp
The best chicken salad on earth. This is not hyperbole. Get some! THe meat market is good for your basic needs and has all of the new orleans staples like pickle meat and sausage. THey make thier own itallian and hot sausage patties on site. Every time i go home i pick up some and a loaf of frnch bread to bring back to dallas. They also have a small counter that makes poboy and lunches to go for the lunchtime crowd.

Yelp
Best deli meat in town. Lunch tongue made in house! Hog head, don't get the jalapeño, takes away the real flavor. Chicken salad, stuffed chops with artichoke dressing, gotta have it.

Paul B.

Yelp
Fantastic food. It's a working person's place so don't expect fancy, but the food is outstanding. I grew up in New Orleans and moved out of state when I graduated from college. I recently spent several months on an assignment there and I ate lunch here as often as I could. It's great home cooking New Orleans style without the tourist prices.

Yelp
Holy cow.... can you say BEST ROAST BEEF EVER!!! I just got introduced to this place recently and now I can't stop going there. It looks like a run-down kind of sketchy spot but once you go in you realize it's a quaint little neighborhood store. Very small eating area for people who get po-boys or lunch plates, and the larger area is a little grocery area with their fresh meet, sausage, some prepared foods (stuffed peppers, muffaletta's, pasta salad, etc). Their deli counter is where it's at though! They make this amazing roast beef with pieces of garlic stuffed inside of it. They cut it just like regular cold cuts and you can buy gravy in the back part of the store to put on it is well. It makes the absolute best roast beef sandwich EVER! The have an "off-the-bone" turkey that is superb as well. Some of the best cold cuts I've ever had in my life. Check it out, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Jeanfreau's food is very delicious. I love how there are 2 different sides. (The diner and The Super Market). The service is very fast and good. They are always accommodating you in any way possible. The food is so good! Just enough juice with the meat in the bread but not to much. This is a great place to go if you are around in Chalmette.
