Award-Winning Ice Cream Shop Jeni’s Picks Durham, North Carolina, for Next Location | Eater Carolinas

"James Beard Award-winning ice cream maker Jeni Britton Bauer is bringing her eponymous shop to Brightleaf Square in Durham, North Carolina; she says she loves the Durham area for its character and entrepreneurial spirit. Since opening her first store in Columbus, Ohio in 2002, her unconventional flavors—like Sweet Curry, Basil Honey Pine Nut, El Rey Single-Origin Chocolate and the breakout Salty Caramel—have built a cult-like following and led to pints appearing in stores nationwide. New-city openings typically draw lines around the block, so Durham residents should keep an eye out for the opening date." - Erin Perkins

Google
Enjoyed the ice cream flavors with bits of cake in them. Flavors you wouldn’t normally see at the grocery store. Would visit again. You are able to taste test flavors before buying. You can be served in a variety of forms such as a bowl, waffle cone, etc… This location has a steady flow of customers of all ages. Gloves weren’t worn during handling at this visit.

Google
The ice cream was affordable, the lines were short, and the service was quick. It was my first time visiting, and I decided to be adventurous and try the new watermelon taffy ice cream and oh boy did it pack a punch. Maybe it's because I'm used to other companies under-delivering on flavor, but I was genuinely shocked at its intensity. Don’t get me wrong—it's impressive that it lived up to the flavor it claims to be. However, as someone who loves literally anything and everything artificially watermelon-flavored, even I found it to be, dare I say, too pungent/overly sweet. As for the restaurant itself, it was clean, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, I’m happy with my experience, but would skip the watermelon taffy next time.

Stopped by Jeni’s for some late-night ice cream treats! Tried a couple of free samples — the Gooey Butter Cake and Brambleberry Crisp — both were delicious. The seating options are great, with both indoor and outdoor spaces. The AC inside is definitely refreshing. There’s some on-site parking, though it can get packed during busy hours. A solid spot for a sweet fix!

Google
Good ice cream. Quick service. Overall positive experience. Gooey cake batter is awesome. 4 1/2 scoops is ~$8.50.

Google
Love this place! First, let's talk about the dairy free options. There are some fabulous flavors to pick from! Texas Sheet Cake, caramel pecan sticky buns, and so many more! I have a friend who is dairy free and she was so excited by the choices she had to pick from. Then there are their regular flavors and they keep a rotating menu of delicious flavors! Cinnamon bun, caramel popcorn, buttermilk strawberry and many more! This ice cream shop is an amazing little shop with absolutely delicious flavors to chose from! I highly suggest giving them a visit!

Google
Came by Jeni's for some frozen treats! Ended up getting some of their dairy free options. I believe it was the Texas sheet cake and rose sorbet. There is seating both inside and outside. AC is super cold inside. There is some parking on site, but can definitely get packed during busy hours.

Google
I’ve tired just about every flavor they have and they are all so good. My favorite flavors are the Sweet Cream Biscuits and Peach Jam, Salty Caramel, and Savannah Buttermint! They are always adding new flavors and their homemade waffle cones are so good!

Dave M.

Google
What a great selection of unique flavors! There is also non dairy options which I had. The Texas Sheet Cake was non dairy and creamy. You wouldn't know it was non dairy! The rest of the crew picked out some fun flavors and we all enjoyed our ice cream on site.

Yelp
I've been coming to Jeni's for several years, dating back to when I lived in Columbus, Ohio (where the original brick & mortar was). The ice cream is unlike anything else I've ever had. Jeni always has unique flavors (along with the staples of vanilla and chocolate)- there is something for everyone! Definitely consider mixing and matching flavors (they allow you to do 1, 2, or 3 half scoops for that purpose). No matter what store front you walk into, the smell of freshly baked waffle cones will hit your nose instantly. Signature trademark of Jeni's (to me). I love that you can get a cone, waffle bowl, or just a triangle sample of a waffle in your bowl! The flavors are always changing, from season to season, with a few main ones always in the store. The ice cream is smooth and velvety- while several have an added texture, depending on what's mixed in (cake, brownie, caramel, etc). The store always has a line, but it moves fast!! Some of my absolute favorite flavors include the gooey butter cake, salted caramel, and double dough. They offer both dairy-free and gluten-free ice cream. Customer service is friendly, and they don't mind at all if you sample a bunch of different flavors! Love that you can buy pints here to go (and that I'm seeing them in retail stores like Publix now)!

Yelp
The flavors were amazingly delicious. I don't remember the name of the flavor but it was a mixture of sweet and savory. The staff was patient as our group tried all of the flavors. The location next to the nightlife spot gave a great vibe for fun and conversation.
google avatar

Natika G.

Yelp
Free parking, quick service, vegan options, and delicious ice cream! What more can you ask for? I love their ice cream but I normally skip the cones because sometimes they can be stale. It's spacious and clean in the inside and there is something here for everyone!
google avatar

Kenisha R.

Yelp
Food ice cream delicious Service Ambiance inviting and colorful The unique flavors will keep you coming back to indulge in creations with each season. It's a refreshing place to get a cold treat with unique Lovely

Yelp
The ice cream was unique and delicious. I had the Vanilla Honey and the Double Dough in a waffle cone. It was great. We went with a group and enjoyed sitting outside at the tables. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and informative. Least favorite part was trying to understand the parking and the parking validation. I guess if you go to school there or live there it is easy, but we needed some help to figure out how to pay and get verified. But overall I highly recommend it

Yelp
Came here with my brother to get our birthday scoops! It was very smooth and hospitable to get our free scoops for our birthday. I loved the variety of flavors. The ambiance was very welcoming and friendly. If you haven't tried Jeni's ice cream, this is your sign to!
google avatar

Cole M.

Yelp
Unique flavors and yummy smelling store with the waffle cones. If there's any line you have to stand outside which isn't always ideal. We liked our ice cream but didn't love it. I think if there was a unique flavor here you found that you loved this would be a great place. Of the five we tried, none blew us away.

Yelp
"Great ice cream right off Brightleaf" Hiding behind Goorsha's restaurant on Main Street is this little gem. I came on a hot Sunday evening (nice they were open!), and there was a long line waiting. As you can see in the photos, there are many outdoor benches with fans, as well as indoor space for dining. I liked that they had a long counter that repeated the ice cream choices, so you're not asked from a place where the choices are not visible to pick immediately or hold up the line. Other thing I liked was lactose-free options! They had both chocolate sheet cake and something that tasted just like key lime pie. I sampled both of those and immediately got a split of them in a bowl. One aside-- the sample spoons are metal and reused, so they are environmentally conscious in that regard, though the actual walk-away service spoons are plastic. The ice creams were EXCELLENT. I like that they put a waffle cone "wedge" separating the two flavors, and the flavors themselves were rich and vibrant. The ice cream had a great texture, too-- I don't think it was at all obvious they were lactose free. Service was great, and the price was reasonable. No objections at all, and I would VERY happily come back.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream and wonderful staff (especially Tae)!!!! Highly recommend if you're in Durham.

Yelp
The ice cream and waffle bowl is always incredible. Their flavors are unique and always delicious. I got the gooey butter cake, brambleberry crisp, and lastly the biscuits and peach jam. All were phenomenal but wish I had three scoops of gooey butter cake. Staff is incredibly welcoming and happy to offer as many samples as you like. Great experience but better ice cream!

Yelp
So many great flavors to try, friendly staff, love this place. Might be the best ice cream I've had ‍‍

Yelp
I had no idea of this place until yesterday. My brother and I went out on a late drive and found this place by chance. It wasn't that busy for a Saturday night. The ice cream was great, creamy and flavorful. I would definitely recommend. The place has lots of seating, they also have outside seating with a nice vibe.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
Jeni's is genuinely my favorite ice cream shop and I was so excited to see it next to the restaurant I was dining in at. The shop is bright, clean and crisp. There are a few seats inside and picnic benches outside. Staff are friendly and will happily offer samples. The bramble berry crisp is one of my favorites. They just started a new flavor- biscuits with the boss- to celebrate the release of Ted Lasso season 3. It's a buttery tasting vanilla ice cream with short bread pieces. Worth trying :)
google avatar

Justice B.

Yelp
Service was good & ice cream was good! Walked in on a quiet Saturday night, then ate right outside on the benches. I tried to go back in to use the restroom a little after 8pm, but the doors were locked and closing wasn't until 11pm. I loved that I could try all the flavors, but wouldn't be in a rush to come back I'm more of a vanilla type of gal (KISS).

Yelp
It was a typical Hot day here in North Carolina and I needed some relief from the heat so I ordered some Ice Cream from Jeni's and I was definitely satisfied......The taste was delicious and the Ice Cream definitely kept me cool for a couple of days...Next time I might try the physical location but I can guarantee you that Ice Cream I had was much needed.......
google avatar

Melody B.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place because I always see the Jeni's ice cream pints at the grocery store. I got the standard with two flavors - Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks and Milkiest Chocolate. The ice cream was nothing special. Service was not great either. They had only two people working on a Saturday with a growing line. The employees had a good attitude, but it was not worth waiting for. I definitely think this place is over hyped.
google avatar

Melanie L.

Yelp
So fun and inviting looking on the inside and outside of Jeni's. Staff was super knowledgeable about flavors and offered samples. Store was very clean inside. I love Jeni's over other ice cream shops because of the unique flavor choices. Sure there are plenty low key flavors that would please someone who just likes vanilla or chocolate. But there's flavors like lavender that are just so well thought out and appealing.
google avatar

Yelp
Even with my lactose intolerance, I still find a way to down great ice cream like Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and their first location in the Triangle is now open! Located on W. Main Street next to Devine's and across from Brightleaf Square in a stand-alone building. Light, bright and cheery, choose from about 20 hand-scooped flavors, bowls are about $7 for three smallish scoops. I did the brambleberry crisp, gooey butter cake and jelly donut flavors, dee-lish! Overall I was pretty happy with the quality of ice cream here, it's comparable to my other favorite, Two Roosters. So enjoy, Durham! You've got a new option for frozen treats and sweets, perfect with the hot weather rolling in this week....
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
It's Hot! We are on the road again for softball and Junior and I decided to get out of the heat and go to Jeni's. We can get this awesome ice cream back home at the grocery store but this was our first trip to an actual location. It didn't disappoint! Great service and great flavors! Some of them we knew but a lot of them were new to us. 8 samples later (the person helping us was very kind to my son who couldn't make up his mind) we decided on the gooey butter cake, birthday cake, almond brittle and the salted peanut butter. All of them were top shelf and amazing! If you are in Durham, go visit! It's near downtown but they have their own parking lot and we had no trouble finding it! It does sit back a little but Waze will get you there. Enjoy!

Yelp
I can't recommend Jeni's enough!! Most importantly, I have a peanut allergy, and they are really nice about it!! If you are like me and have a nut allergy and get nervous about ice cream stores, this place is for you. It seems like they really take it seriously when I tell them and I am really grateful!!! So the service is definitely good. I also like the outdoor space they have. And finally the ice cream is good!! To be honest, I am used to bigger portions. These are about average portions. But the flavors are so creative! I love that the flavors change seasonally. I seems like they put a lot of effort into creating new flavors and using fresh fruits and jams in their flavors.
google avatar

Jeff F.

Yelp
Is the ice cream here delicious? Absolutely! Is it ridiculously overpriced? Oh heck yes!

Private ..

Yelp
Yum! We got brambleberry crisp, salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks, and goat cheese with red cherries and they were all delicious. Deducting one star because it was poorly managed. There were only 2 employees on a busy Friday night with a long line out the door. The staff was clearly miserable and mentally checked out.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Jenni's offers an artsy array of fine ice creams. Their flavors are unique. The serving size is tiny. Their two scoops is smaller than most single scoops at other ice cream shops. The ice cream at Jenni's is over priced.
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
Durban's ice cream game is officially legit. Jeni's proves it. I remember first having Jeni's in Charleston then Savannah then Nashville and thinking it was only found in "cool Southern cities". Now we're officially one! Jeni's is high quality and yummy. The Brown Butter Almond Brittle and Gooey cake are actually delightful. I regularly get pints. I also had a seasonal flavor that was a Sticky Bun something that was delicious. But I've tried many other flavors (including most on the flight) and have thought most just okay. It's also super pricey - small scoops for mucho $$$. But won't stop me from coming back regularly :)
google avatar

Cathy D.

Yelp
The Brown Butter Almond Brittle ice cream is so heavenly! Rich, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Woow! I went Saturday afternoon and service was quick! Nice and quiet environment. Indoor and outdoor seating available.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
I know it's not local, but as a very committed ice cream fan, I do have to say this is the best in the area. Durham is blessed with many great ice cream options, to be fair. Jeni's just takes the cake for me in terms of flavor, consistency and texture. If you are familiar with Salt and Straw on the west coast, this is about as close as you can get to that experience in my opinion. They have enough classics and seasonal options that everyone should be able to find something they like. It is a tad overpriced, but that is to be expected at places like this. They do have a rewards program so it does pay off!
google avatar

Raelynn V.

Yelp
Delicious and unique ice cream flavors, but rating 4 stars for the long wait and less than enthused staff, though maybe I just caught them on a bad day. The interior is cute and there are picnic tables outside for seating. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

JJ C.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Jeni's opened their new scoop shop location in Durham, and it has been a local hotspot. The inside is clean, has a decent amount of seating, and smells like sugary ice cream. There is also some outdoor seating available. Service: The servers have been friendly and patient with us wanting to try samples. One thing we've noticed however is that this location has sometimes been inconsistent with how many flavors and the variety of flavors available. Food: We've tried the Gooey Butter Cake, Cold Brew with Coconut Cream, Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Pumpkin Cake Roll, Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks, and Brambleberry Crisp at this location. The flavors are unique, and the ice cream is always reliable in terms of quality! Our favorites are probably the Gooey Butter Cake and Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks. The Gooey Butter Cake is sweet, creamy, and has a great amount of caramel while not being too sticky. The Salted Peanut Butter has a perfect balance between sweet and salty, and the little chunks of chocolate add a satisfying, rich crunch to each bite. Overall: We've always been fans of Jeni's since first trying their ice cream at another location. Their ice cream is overpriced, but we're always drawn back to their fun flavors and atmosphere.
google avatar

Marie O.

Yelp
What a treat this place was. Friends say that in the summer there's a long line to get in and I believe it. They have amazing flavors and some really interesting concoctions. Flavors like "pumpkin cake roll", "watermelon taffy", and my favorite...,"brambleberry crisp" which was basically a sweet tart crisp jammed in a oven toasted streusel flavored ice cream! I paired it with a blueberry lavender ice cream..oh..my...gosh... SOOOO good. I made sure to have the two scoops on a waffle cone cuz come on...you have to. Come here guys if you're in Durham otherwise you're missing out.
google avatar

Shanelle Y.

Yelp
I do not eat dairy so I was excited to see they had two non-dairy options. I chose the Texas sheet cake flavor, and while it was good, the serving size was pretty small. I am not sure if I can justify spending over $6 for two small scoops of ice cream again.
google avatar

Amy U.

Yelp
5 bright shiny stars for Jeni's! So many interesting and fun flavors; you can sample your heart out and they are so happy to serve you. Super nice employees, very friendly. While the Salted Caramel and Coffee would've been my typical choice, I was in a fruity mood and chose the Brambleberry Crisp and the Wildberry Lavender. I ordered a scoop of each and both flavors were so creamy, delicious and satisfying. Flavors and textures were on point. They do make their own waffle cones and bowls fresh on site, so definitely take advantage of that. The ice cream shop has plenty of seating inside and outside but it was so hot and humid out, we opted to sit inside in the air conditioning. It was so fun watching everybody sampling different flavors and seeing what everybody else was ordering. Next time I am out and about in Durham, I will definitely be stopping in and would absolutely recommend Jeni's to others! Thank you!
google avatar

Qiongqiong M.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night. Crowded outside, waited in a long line. Short staffed, but the workers were friendly. The ice cream was okay, pretty avg. didn't surprise me that much.
google avatar

Thuy H.

Yelp
Jeni's really surprised me! When I first went into their store, I thought the smell was overwhelmingly sweet and was afraid the ice cream was going to be overwhelmingly sweet. I was very wrong. The flavors were so full of flavor and had such a unique profile. My favorite were definitely the darkest chocolate and bramble berry crisp. The darkest chocolate was so yummy and decadent, definitely the strongest cacao flavor I've ever had for a chocolate. They even mentioned that it was 30% more cacao than most chocolate flavored ice cream. The bramble berry had a delicious jam that goes through it. The only con from the two times I've been at Jeni's is that their scoop sizes were inconsistent, and even the wafer sizes was inconsistent. I think this is about managing expectation and making sure scoops stay consistent throughout different services. I will definitely be back for pints next time! Taste: 4/5 Presentation: 4/5 Recommend to a friend?: Yes Consistent: can be improved Cost: $ Parking: has a decent sized parking lot. Go slower before you enter or you might miss it, next to a giant tree. Exit is one way through the back side.
google avatar

Keenan T.

Yelp
The quality of Jeni's ice creams lives up to the name of the establishment. These rich, hearty ice creams melt differently in your mouth than your average store-bought ice creams. One who's eaten his fair share knows that this ice cream is different. I found that out on my first visit. This ice cream has a different consistency. The Brambleberry Crisp is my favorite so far. Jeni's debuted their Wedding Cake flavor and it's another fan favorite. I'm sure that the four scoops I had so far will not be my last.
google avatar

Lucy D.

Yelp
I came over the weekend and just don't get the hype? I got a small, which comes with 2 scoops. I got one scoop of brown butter almond brittle and one of salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks. The almond had no taste. It's not just that it didn't taste like almond, it tasted like nothing. The peanut butter was better since it actually tasted like peanut butter. But overall I wasn't impressed with either. My friend got one scoop of vanilla and one of chocolate, and threw it out halfway through cuz it wasn't worth it. There also weren't enough people working (2 on a hot saturday) so it took awhile. I know they're new, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt there. But given the price and lack of flavor, I don't think Jeni's is worth it.
google avatar

Chaim M.

Yelp
This will be one of the best ice creams you will eat. A national brand not because they throw a ton of sugar into it, but because the ice cream is to die for. Lots of seating outdoor here for a fun environment and even at 10pm the service was great!
google avatar

Rosa L.

Yelp
Jeni's ice creams are incredibly smooth and luxurious tasting. For the lactose-intolerant, their dairy-free options top notch - I find them indistinguishable from the "regular" ice cream in depth of flavor and texture. They have ~20 flavors to choose from, so it can feel overwhelming. We visited during a midday lull, and the friendly staff was happy to give us samples. On our visit, they didn't have any of the more adventurous flavors that I've seen at other Jeni's locations (e.g. goat cheese, everything bagel). I'm not sure if that's a Durham location thing or if Jeni's HQ just didn't have wild flavors in their rotation while we were visiting. They won't unseat the Parlour as my favorite local ice cream spot, but I also wouldn't turn down a visit next time I'm in the Brightleaf area. Bonus tip: They have a rewards app, where you get $5 for every $100 that you spend. Jeni's is on the pricey side, so it won't take too many visits to get there!
google avatar

Logan L.

Yelp
I prefer to support local ice cream shops in Durham, but I will make an exception for Jeni's. The quality of their ice cream is great, and they have such a wide variety of flavors. The smell of the freshly made waffle cones & bowls was enough to convince me to add that to my order and I think everyone should too. I got the Gooey Butter cake and coffee with sugar and cream and both were incredible. I went back 2 days later and tried the vegan cold brew with coconut cream flavor- it was great for a vegan ice cream but lacked that creaminess that Jeni's has. I'm glad Jeni's moved to Durham, especially in the Brightleaf area. I also love that Jeni's is open later than many other Durham ice cream shop/ dessert places. However, be prepared to wait in line, as everyone seems to try many flavors and like to take their sweet time while doing it.
google avatar

Aimee H.

Yelp
The wildberry lavendar has been my favorite ever since i horded pints of it in my dorm mini-fridge at OSU using my leftover swipes . The golden nectar is a new flavor i havent seen before but sheesh the description of tasting like fading sunlight was spot on (aka it tastes like honey but apparently it's just spiced vanilla)
google avatar

Surika A.

Yelp
I have been waiting to try Jeni's ice cream for a while since I wanted to try it in a store location as opposed to out of a pint from the grocery store. It did not disappoint! I got the wildberry lavender and dark chocolate and they were both smooth, creamy, flavorful, and delicious. I also appreciated the addition of the wafer. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because it's a tad bit expensive for what you're getting in my opinion.
google avatar

Ellen A.

Yelp
I'm torn. But, first, the money situation: this is very expensive ice cream. A small waffle bowl with only two (skimpy, 1/4 to 1/3 c.) scoops and zero add-ons will run you $11. Then you'll be prompted for a **$5 tip**. After you've waited in a long line (bc they don't hire enough employees) that's usually about 20min+. The ice cream is good, and lots of novel variety (unless your vegan - then I hope you like two of the same flavors all year with a third seasonal by pint only, for no apparent reason?). But there are two other really good ice cream spots in Durham that don't gouge like it feels Jenis does, so I just don't come here anymore.
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
I'm so excited that Jeni's ice cream has come to Durham. I am very familiar with them as I used to go to a shop in Atlanta. Their ice cream is always fresh and super tasty. They make their waffle cones and bowls on site and never prepackaged. I love that they have such a huge and rotating selection.
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
Amazing flavors!!! Finally made it to Jeni's, as soon as you open the front door you are greeted by the sweet smell of waffle cones. Lots of flavors including vegan flavors. Ordered 2 scoops, Frose and rainbow sorbet. The flavors were great and the waffle cone was delicious. Staff is great, place is nice, bright and clean. Great addition to the Bright Leaf district. Don't forget to sign up for the rewards.

Yelp
Really cute shop, friendly staff, fun aesthetics, and just overall great environment. Indoor and outdoor seating is nice, and the ice cream is spectacular. The flavors are quite fun and all of them taste great. I've tried brambleberry, peach jam, coffee, and butter cake and a couple others and not a single one has disappointed. Not only is the flavor great, but so is the texture, just overall amazing ice cream. Only criticism is that the waffle cones are a bit salty for my taste, I understand it's done to counter the sweetness but I think it's a bit overdone but that just may be my taste. Would definitely recommend, a great addition to the area.

Yelp
Great local spot, will be back. The Merry Berry is FANTASTIC, truly one of the best ice creams I've experienced. 1 issue... The "Flight" (10 ice cream flavors), is predetermined and not chose your own, which seems very odd. It's not premade so why can't the 10 flavors be chosen on the spot?
