tl;dr stellar ice cream bases are the name of the game at this artisanal scoop shop chain, while affordability and mix-ins fall by the wayside
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is a nationwide artisanal ice cream brand focused on locally sourced ingredients and premium construction. Pints are available for purchase at upscale grocery stores, and Philly has recently welcomed 2 dedicated scoops shops to the Rittenhouse and Fishtown neighborhoods.
At the Rittenhouse outpost, a bright bulb-lit sign illuminates the street at all hours. Glass double doors lead directly into a double-decker queue that fills the otherwise pint-sized shop. Flourishes of Nickelodeon orange accents and warm globe lights are immediately inviting. A narrow counter for upright eating and shelves of Jeni's-branded apparel and accessories run along the ceiling-to-floor bay windows on the right. A grab-and-go pint freezer is pressed against the far wall, while the dual ice cream display sits to the left.
The black-and-white letterboard menu lists a diverse selection of flavors, from standard to eye-catching. Over the course of my visits, I've sampled Gooey Butter Cake, Darkest Chocolate, Coffee with Cream and Sugar, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Brambleberry Crisp, Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks, Brown Butter Almond Brittle. My favorites were the brambleberry, the coffee, and the peanut butter, each channeling the essence of their respective base flavor into a chic frozen dessert. For the most part, all flavors showcase Jeni's delightfully creamy texture and depth of flavor -- features that clearly differentiate their product from the run-of-the-mill ice creamery. Further, the fragrantly fresh, honey-drizzled waffle cones are miles ahead of the competition.
However, Jeni's self-proclaimed creativity is massively overstated. Standard flavors (with spruced-up titles) comprise most of the product lineup, and the more adventurous offerings are only offered as $12 pints rather than scoops. Further, Jeni's topping game is sorely lacking, with even the most generous flavors only sporting a scarce sprinkling of their eponymous mix-ins.
Despite its limitations, Jeni's is still worth the occasional splurge. You can always expect a handful of constants at this location: friendly and knowledgeable service, a line going out the door, eyebrow-raising prices ($6 for the base option), and tasty ice cream.
