Where to Celebrate the 4th of July in D.C.

"Considering how hot it is, nothing sounds better than ice cream on the Fourth of July. This summer, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams debuted a new seasonal flavor dubbed Sparkling Cherry Pie. An innovative take on an American classic, it combines sour Michigan cherry ice cream, sweet-tart cherry jam, crumbly shortbread, and a hint of Sichuan peppercorn to mimic the fizz of a sparkler." - Vinciane Ngomsi

I think this location is okay. There have been better experiences at other locations in the area. It seems like the employees barely want to be there. I do however love the icecream :) my favorite is the gooey butter cake flavor. It’s hard to beat!

John L. Davis

Google
Just OK for me today. Maybe I picked the wrong flavors. The speed-talking guy behind the counter put the press on me to decide - mistake. No doubt the choices are exotic and so is $7 plus for (what Jeni calls) two scoops. I just wasn't feeling it today. Last thing. The waffle cone piece that came with… it was “musty” and had no redemption quality - it didn't add to the experience at all. I'll pass next time. I'll save on parking that way too.

Google
Gooey butter cake is the best!! But the wait is always so long here 😭😭😭 I came once and waited for 20 minutes with only 2 people in front of me in line and decided to leave. Came again and waited 20 minutes to get my ice cream. Came a third time and waited 15. Unbelievable.

Bill French

Google
I got three scoops of gooey butter cake (butterscotch), cosmic bloom (mandarin and kiwi), and chocolate. The flavors are extremely rich and flavorful! Unfortunately, they were completely out of waffle cones, and the scoops aren’t that big. Still good though.

Google
What can I say about Jeni’s. Love this place. As soon as you walk in you get hit with a magical scent. I got the opportunity to try a couple flavors before I chose one. The ice cream is a bit pricey but worth it. The birthday cake was fantastic. Service was good as well. Everyone was kind and helpful. There is plenty seating inside. Look forward to going back.

Google
Jeni’s Ice Creams. Is all the rave everyone has been talking about. What an amazing interior layout. The moment we walked in one of the team members was preparing waffle cones. The aroma felt as if we had just walked into the Willy Wonks factory. The two young ladies were so warm friendly and had great customer service skills. When ever we are in town. Checking on our rental properties this is now our new ice cream go to place. The catchy names of the ice creams and the flavor is enough to return again and again. I highly recommend this place for the entire family.

Google
The brown butter almond brittle was excellent! Even the regular chocolate was very good. The waffle bowl tasted waaaaaay too salty though. Not too sure what happened there.

I do not know if it's because they are not trained the same way or if they pick and choose who they feel like being civil with. My last two visits had the same issue. Today I went in for ice cream with the family. I scanned my barcode for reward points and provided proof of service to get my military discount. When I checked my receipt the discount was not applied AGAIN. Trust me I know I am NOT entitled to any discount because I am military. If you offer it at least do it right and not get an attitude when I try to address the situation. Ms. Jada was so determined to go on her break even though I was halfway through the transaction. We are all human and we have our days. I just couldn't accept that kind of poor customer service and attitude. I tried to return the ice cream and was told to wait until Ms. Jada came back from her break. She was literally just standing in front of me. I just waited patiently while the ice cream melted in my hands. When she finally did come out I tried to give her the items back. She asked me where the other cone was as if I had eaten it. The cone was a waffle bowl. I asked her if she thought I would return a cone after I've eaten it. I then tried to give her the icecream AGAIN so she could discard it since she processed my refund. She told me “YOU can discard it on your way out by the door.” All I could do was laugh because at this point because Ms. Jada was just being disrespectful. I handed her the ice cream anyway. I'll happily drive somewhere else before I come here again. Spend your money where you are welcomed and treated with respect.

Yelp
Today was a special event. It was have ice cream for breakfast day. This event occurs on a yearly basis and they open nice and early so you can come in and get ice cream for breakfast. The menu has four custom breakfast ice cream pairings. The ice cream in general is very niche and high-quality. The pairings were breakfast type ice cream flavors such as coffee ice cream. The staff is very friendly place very clean with an open layout. If you've never been to Jenny, this is a place you must try for different ice creams

Yelp
I happended up this place after eating in a resturant next door. My daughter was familar with Jeni's and raved about it, so I had to go in an try. Tamia was the ice cream expert in the store that day and I call her an expert because she knew everything about the 10 flavors I tried. She knew every single flavor profile, which was impressive. Her absoulte enthusiam for these flavors was infectious. I finally settled on the sno cone flavor which really tasted like an atomic popsicle and was more of a sorbet. Totally delish! Jeni's will definetly see me again if I'm in the area. Thanks Tamia for providing such a wonderful experience for this first timer :)

Yelp
Jeni's ice creams are splendid indeed! We walked by around 5:30P and all the customers lined up for ice cream during the dinner hour really spoke volumes. In addition to their classic flavors, they featured four specialty ones, a couple marked "limited-time" and also one dairy-free. I love how they automatically include two half-scoops in a single serving so that you can always try more than one flavor. They are speaking my language! The price of $7.15 for the two half-scoops is on the pricier side for ice cream, but I found it well worth it... so much so that we visited twice in one week. + COFFEE w/ CREAM & SUGAR: I loved this one which had little bean specks and a robust natural coffee flavor. If a shop has coffee ice cream, I normally get it and this is one of the best I've had. + GOOEY BUTTER CAKE: So so good! Cream cheese ice cream was swirled with sweet caramel-butterscotch sauce and cubes of vanilla cake. The cream cheese base was one-of-a-kind and I enjoyed the chew of the slightly frozen cake pieces. This one sounds like it would be super sweet, but it was just right. + DARKEST CHOCOLATE: With a deep cocoa flavor, any fan of dark chocolate would be impressed with its decadence and clean finish. Plus, it would pair nicely with many of the other flavors. + BROWN BUTTER ALMOND BRITTLE: Buttercream ice cream with crushed brown butter almond candy. The brittle added a crunch and I was pleased to find it wasn't the type that gets all stuck in your teeth. This is apparently their rendition of Butter Pecan and let me just say, I'll take almonds over pecans any day! Jeni's prides themselves on the ice cream's texture and melt factor. Each flavor I had was so creamy, rich and smooth. Ahhh, I am still dreaming about them!

Yelp
I was super excited to try this place as I LOVE ice cream, especially the burnt orange creamsicle flavor! The service was fantastic, and they allowed my group to test out various ice cream flavors. All our questions were answered promptly, and we never felt rushed. My cone was amazing! The only downside is the limited table seating. There is one huge table, and I think 2-3 small tables inside, along with a SUPER long bench. Unfortunately, another party occupied the big table, so my group had to sit at the bench, which made it a bit difficult for us all to have a group conversation since we were side by side. Nevertheless, I'd definitely be back for another cone--plus perfect photo op for social media!

Yelp
The place has a sign that they can only take online orders today. Hmm... I was able to convince them to let me in. Staff were friendly and apologized for the inconvenience. It seems the register is down. But told use the app to order and they can let me in and take my order. Ice cream is the bomb!! I had berry crisp, 50/50, and double dough. Wow!! While I was there they changed to closed.

Yelp
HUGE HUGE Jeni's fan. I've been a fan ever since I first tried it many years ago but after discovering their new Persian flavor (saffron, pistachio, rosewater), I love them even more. Although not cheap, you are paying for quality ice cream and flavors. I will never not stop by if I pass a Jeni's location.

Yelp
Even though I've been a DMV native my whole life, I haven't tried Jeni's until now - the question I'm asking myself is, "why didn't I try it sooner?" The Navy Yard location I was closer to had weirder hours, but I was determined to try Jeni's while my not-local friend was in town so we could both experience it together. It was completely empty when we arrived, and we stumbled upon a myriad of flavors. I'm super indecisive, especially when it comes to ice cream - so I had to sample a few flavors. I landed on the fluffernutter, which was so creamy and had the perfect peanut butter-marshmallow ratio. There were so many unique flavors, I definitely want to go back and try them all. Definitely worth the splurge and waiting for a Jeni's location to open up in Boston!

Yelp
We made a quick stop at Jeni's because we were craving ice cream. Jeni's did not disappoint! The atmosphere was warm and cheerful. We were greeted my a friendly cashier who was more than patient as we sampled different flavors before making our choice. I chose a scoop of the honey vanilla bean and the famous brambleberry crisp ice cream. My wife had a scoop of brown butter almond ice cream. Both were creamy and decadent.

Yelp
Nice location, seating inside and out, online order pickup right at the front. Love jeni's
google avatar

Yelp
Although a limited selection of flavors, this is a new spot to cheer about in SE DC. The waffle cone and half scoops will not disappoint. I encourage you to come on in and look at the creatively named flavors and taste the fresh smooth cream finish. The peanut butter chip was my go to, staff were friendly and there is plenty of seating indoors with colorful lighting and photos that tell the story of Jenni. The emergency exit and line control doesn't make functional sense, and i am curious how they will handle the lines in the summertime.

Yelp
I absolutely love this ice cream place! Every time I come here, I get a different flavor and they all hit the spot. My sweet tooth is always satisfied when i visit . I always get a extra bit of cone peices with my scoop and make a ice cream nacho. You will not be disappointed with anything except parking, which can be kinda scarce. I highly recommend you stop by even if it's to sample and find your flavor of choice!
google avatar

Yelp
A delightful ice cream place with creative flavors and good texture. I don't remember exactly what we got, but the staff allowed for everyone to have a few samples which we appreciated. I do remember enjoying the vanilla as well as the almond brittle flavors.

Yelp
A nice pit stop after dinner. We enjoyed the dark chocolate and the peanut butter chip ice cream! The lady was nice and let us have a few samples, all flavors were so good and creamy!

Yelp
So many flavors . Love the ice cream and service . Parking seems mostly street. Can get flavors packed for a few bucks .

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous give me 14 of em! I got the non-dairy vegan Texas sheet cake ice cream flavor and it was amazing. It was so rich and creamy. Every bite was decadent. I look forward to going back.

Yelp
If you've never had Jeni's ice cream, stop reading this review immediately and get yourself to the closest location!! Yes, retailers such as Whole Foods sells Jeni's by the pint, but I always prefer to stop in and walk out with a freshly scooped cup or cone. Employees are always friendly and helpful and this Jeni's is no exception. There are plenty of places to sit and the lines move fast. It's clean and if you can deal with 8th Street parking and pedestrians this location is convenient for locals and tourists. Of course Jeni's has the BEST ice cream (my classic favorites are darkest chocolate + brambleberry crisp, though the seasonal creativity is often worth trying too!) but is also incredibly design-happy -- the font of the signs, the goods they sell inside such as shirts and cookbooks, the overall aesthetic makes a difference for an in-person visit. Don't forget to add moonglow (blue rainbow) sprinkles for the kids, and grab your free ice cream on your birthday!
google avatar

Yelp
The ice cream here is just amazing and the service was also pretty spectacular. I stopped by for a sweet treat right before this establishment was getting ready to close. The customer service was impeccable and the ice cream to die for. Can't go wrong with Jeni's
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful assortment of both tried & true and novel flavors! The service was great as they let me try a few flavors before I decided on Blackout Chocolate Cake and Maple Soaked Pancakes flavors. The ice cream was very rich, creamy, and not too sweet. I really like the chunky texture of the Blackout Chocolate cake (definitely a winner for a chocolate lover!). The maple soaked pancakes ice cream was a flavor I haven't had before- I enjoyed the maple ! Overall, 5/5 for great service and rich ice cream!

Yelp
During our epic 700-mile trek across the wilds of D.C., we stumbled upon this charming, pint-sized ice cream haven tucked away in Georgetown. Now, they're not kidding around with that "please wait here" sign; they take it more seriously than we take our morning coffee! Our ice cream maestro, let's call him the "Scoopmaster Supreme," was a ray of sunshine on this grand ice cream adventure. He didn't just scoop ice cream; he orchestrated a symphony of flavors. He even dropped some wisdom on us and suggested we give his favorite, the Lavender Wildberry, a whirl. We were intrigued, slightly skeptical, but ready for an adventure. Now, let's talk about that Lavender Wildberry. It's like a wild, floral party in your mouth - the lavender makes a grand entrance, not quietly, mind you, but it's no grandma's lavender soap! It takes center stage without overpowering, hugging the whole scoop like a friendly aroma blanket. It's the kind of refreshing surprise that tickles your taste buds and says, "Hey, I'm here to party!" So, if you're up for an ice cream adventure that's not just tasty but also a whole lot of fun (with an ice cream maestro who's more serious about that "please wait here" sign than you are about your weekend plans), this place in Georgetown is the scoop-tastic destination you didn't know you needed on your 700-mile quest through the capital!

Yelp
. That's it. That's the review. Kidding...BUT yes, it's that good. I will admit, I'm not a fan of sweets so I very rarely stop into Icecream shops BUT there's always a line so Figured I'd try it out and this location did NOT disappoint. Reasons for the 5s. - so many flavors that are all really good. I normally stick with vanilla (which I've tried their version, it's really good) but I also tried one of their seasonal flavors which was a wild berry passion fruit situation. IT. WAS. BOMB. so good! - I was able to try a few different flavors based on what I normally like. Much appreciated! - you can buy a pint right in the store if it's something you enjoy. - they have really great dairy free options. - the service was great! We went on my friend's birthday and didn't realize you get a free ice cream if it's your actual birthday until after we were all sitting down. When I asked the cashier about it she was so kind and gave my friend a card gifting her a free triple scoop at a future time which I thought was really sweet. - inside is super cute and even though the line will more than likely be long...it's moves quickly. Honestly, nothing bad to say about this location. Flavors are solid, staff is great, service is great. The line may be long depending on the day, but def worth the wait.

Yelp
The employee working was not having it when we went after dinner but that's OK, we were there for good ice cream! SINGLE SCOOP (2 FLAVORS) - 6.25 It's either $6.25 or $6.75 but that's pretty expensive so my friend and I shared. The flavors here didn't intrigue me and wasn't very unique (besides the naming) so we went for something pretty basic. Overall, there was a good amount of ice cream and the waffle cone piece was a nice touch. However, it's pretty thin and weak so you can't really dip it in the ice cream without it breaking. The DARKEST CHOCOLATE tasted more like a really strong milk chocolate, which is pretty disappointing. Still good, just not what I was hoping for. The SALTED PEANUT BUTTER WITH CHOCOLATE FLECKS was pretty tasty with a strong peanut butter flavor and good amount of chocolate. Would recommend this one, but it's a bit too sweet for me. Jeni's is good but nothing phenomenal. You most definitely can get more creative and affordable ice cream at local DC shops. Sorry Jeni's stans!
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
This is one of the best ice cream places I've been to! I got the lavender and coffee flavors. But they have plenty of other very unique flavors. I got the small which includes one scoop of two flavors of your choice plus a piece of waffle cone. I'm glad the portion size is generous since this isn't cheap ice cream. When I went the employees were super nice and assisted with answering questions about the flavors and samples. They also sell pints of some of their flavors in certain grocery stores..which is dangerous haha. But seriously they need to open up more shops in suburban areas where parking isn't such an issue.
google avatar

Tra S.

Yelp
I wish that I could say that I had an excellent time at Jeni's as always. This however is not the case. I also wish that I could tell you how amazing the ice cream was, however this isn't the case. This is because even though my family member and I arrived at 2:05pm today (12.11.23), to my surprise when I grabbed the door handle to get in, it was locked. Shortly after I see a young woman with short hair walking back in forth in the front of the shop, however she doesn't come over to announce anything so we wait. It's now 2:13pm and then I call their sister location to see if anything is happening in the store today. They tell me that maybe it has something to do with them making ice cream/stocking for the day and they wish me "good luck". Shortly after my phone call, the associate comes to the door to let us know that her coworker is running late and that they can't official open until they get here. We then ask if we can sit inside in the meantime as it's very cold outside. The young woman says this isn't possible, so we leave ice cream less and disappointed.

Yelp
Okay for last minute night dessert... I tried the gooey butter cake. It was good, but I hated the recycled bowl that it was placed in. Pricey...
google avatar

Noelle H.

Yelp
One of the few places in Capitol Hill to grab an ice cream after work. The staff is nice, the place is clean and has some fun music playing. There is a large variety of different ice creams to choose! The coffee ice creams are a personal favorite, I only wish that some of the pint flavors were available for a scoop to eat. The ice cream flavors are unique and creative, and there are fun dairy free flavors as well. The price could be more affordable, but you get to choose two flavors for the standard serving. Overall, their gourmet ice cream is worth a purchase every now and then when you're looking to treat yourself!
google avatar

Cham K.

Yelp
As many new ice cream shops that I try, I keep coming back to Jeni's. Although it's a chain, the consistency has always been solid. Ice cream flavors are unique and always impress my girlfriend and I. What's more impressive than the ice cream (imo) are their ice cream waffle cones. Boy, when I walk in and smell that fresh waffle cone batter, I go crazy. I can not NOT order my ice cream without the waffle cone. I could honestly eat the cone by itself. Am I wrong for that? Anyways, Jeni's ice cream is truly splendid!
google avatar

Lester P.

Yelp
Very good ice cream. The cones are made in house and very good. I will definitely go back.
google avatar

Olivia B.

Yelp
Creamy amazing ice cream , a bit pricey but a treat nonetheless. And very creative interesting combinations for flavors :)
google avatar

Yelp
Visited with my family this evening after dinner to see what the hype was. Okay it was definitely worth the hype! The atmosphere is amazing. Its so bright & captivating. The flavors are all clearly labeled on the ice cream and on the wall. It was so easy to order. We ordered 3 ooey gooey cake cones with two scoops, and a coffee with sweet cream flavored ice cream on a cone. Wow The flavor is really distinct so creamy, smooth, and delicious. My kid does not eat ice cream but he enjoyed my gooey cake ice cream. Lastly lets talk about the service. Its a Sunday evening and everyone was so welcoming and helpful. This was our first time and they were so patient not just with us but every customer in the line. Please visit when you get a chance.

Yelp
I love Jeni's I've been so many times and always love their icecream. They have very unique flavors and solid vegan options as well. One of my favorite icecream flavors is Gooey Butter Cake. In this picture I tried two of the limited time flavors including the Ted Lasso flavor of Biscuits with the Boss and a Birthday Cake icecream flavor. Both were delicious and so creamy.
google avatar

Carrie C.

Yelp
The ice cream is amazing! The service was lackluster but the ice cream was so good it doesn't matter.
google avatar

Gerdine B.

Yelp
I love this place. The employees were so nice! Not to mention the fun variety of flavors you can get. I got goat cheese and cherries. It was so good! The presentation was also very nice. I would definitely get it again. The place is in a really good location too. I stopped by after eating at Belga cafe. There are places to eat all around so it's a great post dinner spot.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
A-1 ice cream experience! From the moment I walked in it gave heavy heavenly smells and vibes! Customer service was great and the ice cream was amazing! I believe the young man that helped me was named Chris. He was very knowledgeable and friendly.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
This is a top-notch ice cream shop. There are a good variety of flavors to choose from here. You can get standard flavors like vanilla and chocolate, but the hits are flavors you won't usually find at other ice cream spots like brambleberry crisp, for example. The ice cream is perfectly creamy. The sweetness level is higher than most ice cream, but if you got a major sweet tooth, this place won't disappoint. The shop is casual and clean. The staff members are helpful and quick to serve.
google avatar

Swapna Y.

Yelp
The service was great. The burnt butter almond brittle was amazing. however, the waffle cone was salty which threw me off. I also got the peanut butter ice cream which also tasted a bit too salty for my liking.
google avatar

Grace B.

Yelp
Suuch good ice cream! A bit pricy and very sweet, but endless samples, very nice staff and delicious flavors! I always try something new and I love that it comes with a little waffle piece to add some crunch! Highly recommend:)
google avatar

Yelp
The moment you walk in this place, you will smell the amazing fragrance of heavenly ice cream! My 8-year-old could not stop saying "it smells so good" b/c it does! We got the classic vanilla bean & Texas chocolate sheet cake on waffle cones. So good.

Yelp
I visited Jeni's in December, not your usual ice cream eating time of year for most people. However being from New England, we live for our ice cream. Any time is ice cream time. Very glad I took the time to come here. I'd visited a Jeni's location before in Charleston, SC so I knew I'd be experiencing a multitude of different flavors to choose from. This location did not disappoint. First, it was spotless. They provided hand sanitizer and had things set up for one way entry and exit via a separate door. Good to see during Covid times. The location is fairly large for a space in an older building. There is seating in the back, however this was closed due to Covid. Also free samples were also not being offered, again due to Covid restrictions. There are a few tables outside for people to enjoy their ice cream and watch the going ons of the Barracks Row neighborhood. The two staff members working this evening were super friendly and helpful. Always a plus. I ended up going with an old favorite, salted caramel in a cone. Mmm. I ate outside and people watched, something that has been hard to do the last 7 months! I topped it off by going back in to buy a pint to bring home. Be forewarned that Jeni's is is not cheap, making buying a pint a treat for me once in a while. A pint sets you back about $12. Their quality makes it worth it, but be aware if you're planning on buying multiple pints! I'm glad this location opened up in Barracks Row. I'll be returning more often now that Jeni's is here.

Yelp
If you want to find the best ice cream in D.C. Jeni's is the place to go. The service is amazing and the staff is super friendly. The staff is open to letting you try plenty of flavors before making your final ice cream decision. There are many options, and they have a variety of flavors, some seasonal and some permanent. The establishment I a nice sized icream parlor that is designed in a very cute colorful way. Definitely Jeni's for the win!
google avatar

Kaitlin T.

Yelp
Jeni's ice cream is one of my favorite things about D.C. Their interior is really inviting and the staff is nice. They have a multitude of unique flavors that it's so hard to choose from. I really enjoy the creaminess of their ice cream and love that if you choose to get a cup, it comes with a piece of the waffle cone, so you can try it without actually getting the cone! I would take everyone I know here.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop! They had a decent amount of options. I always go for anything peanut buttery which they had. I love creamy soft ice cream and this one was not as creamy as my #1 so that's why I gave it one less score. But still good!

Roland S.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! What an incredible spot. My son and I were in town for a baseball trip and after leaving Nats ball park, we stumbled upon this spot. Best ice cream I have ever had, hands down. And I am a self proclaimed fat foodie. The double dough ice cream, which was a season flavor, was the best tasting ice cream I've ever had. Hands down. So good that I came back into town a few days later with the rest of my family, driving hundreds of miles out of the way, to have another cup of it. Go here. You'll love it. Staff is friendly. Food is amazing. Cool area. Plenty of seating inside. It won't disappoint. Everyone in my family thought the ice cream was amazing.
google avatar

Mischa J.

Yelp
The ice cream here tasted very nice! This ended up being a nice little stop for me, because I also needed a place where I could charge my phone and sit down after doing a lot of walking. The ice cream flavors I had were the Cognac and Gingerbread, the Mexican Hot Chocolate, and the Sugar Plum. All three flavors I had were very good.

Yelp

Yelp
Service is great and I got a discount for being a healthcare worker, which was really nice. When I lived in Nashville the Jeni's by me was closed for a long time due to Salmonella so I never got to try it and I never wanted to try it due to the correlation with Salmonella. Tried it here in Old Town and the atmosphere is nice and the idea is nice, but unfortunately I just don't like their ice cream. Maybe it's not as creamy as what I like? I'm not sure! I was able to try several flavors. Wouldn't go back for myself but I appreciate their friendly service and innovation.

Yelp
The review is simple. Favorite flavor? "Yes please". Heh....but I digress. I asked what went with the peanut butter and they recommended the berry crumble and boy were they right. My copilot had the peanut as well, and we faced empty bowls in seconds.

Yelp
My business associate and I had dinner at Cafe Belga up the street. A guest at the table next to us said we should go down the street to Jeni's for ice cream. There a a line out the front door when we arrived, but the line moved smoothly. We both ordered Trio dishes; I had the Wildberry Lavender, Sunshine and the Crispy Pecan Roll. We both thought the ice cream was outstanding with rich flavors and richness. The one suggestion I would add to the store is some kind of coffee or espresso service to add to the experience.

Yelp
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is expensive, but worth the splurge for delicious, creamy ice cream in unique flavors. This particular shop is the second in D.C. and the first on Capitol Hill. They usually have a back room for sitting, but it's closed during the pandemic. During COVID, you can't sample flavors. Once the pandemic ends, you can sample as many flavors as you like including their seasonal flavors. If you go, never get a cup. Always get the waffle cone. It's the best I've had and pairs well with the almond brittle ice cream.
