Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Jamaican culinary specialties abound at Jerk Stop, which is tucked into a quiet West LA strip mall in the former All India Cafe space. The tight menu features the island’s greatest hits, including four kinds of soups (cow foot, fish tea, chicken, red peas), a plethora of patties, ackee and saltfish, braised oxtails, curry goat, and of course, jerk shrimp and chicken." - Cathy Chaplin

Jerk Stop in West LA is my go-to spot for amazing Jamaican food! Their Goat Curry is always packed with flavor and cooked to perfection, and I can’t get enough of their refreshing tropical beverages. You can really taste the homemade love in every bite. The staff is super friendly and attentive, they make sure you’re satisfied every time. That said, parking can be a bit of a challenge, especially during peak hours. Also, while the vibe is great, the music sometimes feels a bit off-theme. I’d love to hear more authentic Jamaican tunes to really match the incredible food and enhance the overall experience. Still, this place is a gem and I’ll definitely keep coming back. Highly recommend supporting this family-run business!

Google
It's fantastic to have a Jamaican restaurant in the neighborhood. I ate the curry chicken and it was delicious. I can't wait to go back and try the jerk chicken. The rice and peas were great soaked in the curry. It is a nice environment there and the people are all very nice.

Google
Food was delicious. Not too salty and packed with flavor. Juicy jerk chicken and tender oxtail. Bro gave me like 2 lbs of rice and peas with my order, so it’s totally worth the money.

Ellerie Autumn

Google
This was the best fried chicken I’ve had in my life. It’s made fresh to order and was so crispy, seasoned, and juicy. The oxtail was very tender but the fried chicken was the highlight of the meal. The strawberry cake was also delicious and flavorful. 10/10 meal and will definitely be back to try their lunch specials.

Google
We got takeout-- two orders of small jerk 🐔 with rice and peas, cabbage, festival, and plantains-- all were excellent. Flavors were on point, jerk sauce nice and spicy, and a generous portion of the rice and peas. We will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends. Even better, the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to see them again!

Google
Best Jerk Chicken I've had outside of Jamaica. I prefer my boyfriends stewed cabbage, he's Jamaican, but their's is top notch when he doesn't want to cook for me. Had the lunch special. Jerk Chicken with a nice smokey flavor and spicy, peas and rice, festival bread, plantain and stewed cabbage and a drink for $15. So yummy!

Google
I got a large brown stew chicken plate that came with rice and peas, cabbage plantains, and festival bread. Everything was flavored. Well it was amazing. I’ll be back.. Also got Jerk Chicken Plate as well as Oxtail Plate. All the food was wonderful to say the least.

Google
Beyond happy to have a local spot to get Jerk Chicken. I wanted to wait and review more items on the menu but I just couldn’t wait. I love this place! The food here at Jerk Stop is so comforting. It makes you feel like you’ve been invited into a Jamaican household and served a delicious home-cooked meal. If it’s your first time I recommend trying the Jerk Chicken plate. I got a large and it comes with a ton of rice, cabbage and veggies, plantains and festivals (A deep-fried bread that’s crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside). The star of the show was the herbaceous and smoky Jerk Sauce that comes on the side. Not only did it enhance the flavor of the chicken, but it had a strong kick! Definitely ask for 2 sauces. The Curry Chicken came with the same sides. It had a good depth of flavor and paired well with the side of hot sauce. It did taste a little salty, and didn‘t come with as much chicken as the Jerk plate, but I don’t think the chef is equally distributing the portions of chicken which is something to keep in mind. I also got the Beef Patty which is something I’ve always wanted to try. Let me tell you it was worth the hype! The minced beef had the perfect level of spiciness, and the dough that encompassed it was flaky and delectable. I highly recommend that you give Jerk Stop a try. I can’t wait to go back!

Yelp
This place is the best Jamican food i ever had. Their oxtails is very tender. And jerk chicken is very smoky and delicious. Their service was great, she was friendly the women who help me, and they play good music.

Yelp
I'm Jamaican. The food is very authentic & delicious. They actually have a real Jamaican BBQ outside (metal barrel cut in half which is what we use on the island) & tastes like they are getting the real pimento wood to cook the jerk. Jerk chicken seasoning is very good. Hope it sticks around. Like most things Jamaican, downside the young girl at the front who is absurdly rude & disinterested which is fine in Jamaica but not here . This will put off a lot of Americans & lead to negative reviews even though the food is exceptional.

Yelp
This is my second time here. First time was PERFECT. This time, I ordered takeout. I thought the chicken was a bit dry. Super flavorful food. I love the jerk sauce. I was surprised by how yummy the cabbage side was. Super friendly service. Casual ambiance. Easy parking. They have a lot. I love the festival bread. It's a slightly sweet fried dough.

Yelp
Possibly worth the trip --- please read for details: There's room for improvement here, and I think they can improve. It felt like they just weren't ready, but opened anyway. Most of the demerits are for the ambiance. They are not quite ready for prime time. The ambiance is "bright lighting, former Indian restaurant, now a Jamaican restaurant, but all we did was paint and hang pictures of Bob Marley." So, not very inviting, but seats were comfortable, so, you know, that's nice. Service -- the hostess/cashier/waitperson gave the impression they were pressed into service and in a pinch -- so, I salute her! But they need a more professional staff. Food... I know jack about Jamaican food, and not sure if this was authentic. So, take this with a grain of salt. Portions were healthy, so the regular size should be enough for most. Goat stew! I love goat and they delivered -- a solid stew with slight spiciness akin to a moderate Indian curry. The plantain and coco bread sides were good, as was the rice and beans and cabbage. The jerk chicken was a bit on the sweet side. I have no idea how it was supposed to taste, so please use your knowledge to fill in the gaps. So, I will give them another chance. The flatware was surprisingly substantial! The restaurant is located in a zombie shopping center: more empty spaces than businesses. Back to ambiance: the pictures on the order up menu should probably be re-considered; to wit, the photo of the beans look like they have a bug in them and the picture of the soup prominently featured a chicken foot (which I like a lot, but may be off-putting to some -- though it does serve as a warning, perhaps).

Yelp
My family and I loved the Jerk chicken. It was delicious! We ordered Jerk chicken, rice and peas, plantains, cabbage, and festival bread. Everything was so good! We are definitely ordering from here again.

Yelp
The Jerk stop is an awesome Jamaican restaurant right on Santa Monica blvd. They have tons of seating and play classics for you to listen to while you eat. There's not a huge line to order food but depending on what you get there can be a decent wait. The jerk salmon was awesome so juicy and soft and the jerk sauce was great with it. The Plantains were nice & soft as well. The red beans and rice was good too it complimented the salmon very well. The Mac and Cheese was nice creamy cheese but it was a tad bit saltier than I was expecting. The curry chicken patty was really good. A nice outer crust and the curry chicken on the inside was nice warm and soft. This was a great experience and I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Second time eating from Jerk Stop. This time I got my order to-go and then raced home to eat it while it was still hot. And the food was just as good, if not even better, than the first time. So I stand by my previous 5-star review. Jerk Stop has the sauce. I mean that literally, and metaphorically. But really, the magic is in the sauces. The jerk chicken and curry goat are loaded with juicy, bold, spiced, and melty flavors. I savagely devoured my meal yet again. No doubt that I'll be back soon!

Justin D.

Yelp
Great authentic Jamaican food that is pretty hard to find in LA. Glad I found this place. Also note that it is on the second floor. Please go check them out!
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but it simply wasn't up to par with many of the Jamaican restaurants I've patronized all throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The chicken was simply underseasoned and dry. Definitely not fresh. Tasted like it was made hours ago and reheated. The small jerk chicken came with two chicken legs and a smattering of the more desirable chicken breast. Definitely not a good bargain for $18 And while I recognize that some variants of jerk sauce are more sweet than spicy, I tend to gravitate toward the spicy end of the spectrum. Simply put, their sauce was not my style. The good news: the rice and plantains were decent. Not enough to save this experience though.

Yelp
I wanted to be mad, I really did. They said our take out order was ready, but we waited 40 minutes when we got there, and they apologized and were nice and added in some extra stuff, but I was still planning on knocking a star off. But then I got home and opened the jerk chicken and was blown away by how good it smelled. And then I took a bite and O.M.G. THAT SMOKE!! How in the world did they do that?! Seriously, that jerk chicken was insane. I mean, I've been to Jamaica, I've had my share of jerk chicken, and the smoke on this was unreal. I think you get the point, so I'll move on. The rice is rice, and the cabbage was better the next day, but the dumplings were everything you could want out of fried dough, and the plantains were perfect - perfectly sweet, perfect firmness, perfect flavor. My man's oxtail was a bit salty, but he enjoyed it. But holy moly the smoke on that chicken. Once word gets out, I'll probably be waiting for at least 40 minutes, and I'd do it all again. Gimme all the smoke!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
Jerk chicken plate - great smoke in the chicken, lovely sweet salty spicy vinegrette-y sauce. Definitely get the gravy for the rice. Plantains were delicious. I gave an audible wow when I had their fried finger cornbread. The crunch and flavor! Delicious. Food came out piping hot. Spiciness creeps up on you and it's delicious. Rice was a bit dry. Not sure if that's common to Jamaican food though! Beef patty - delicious flaky pastry with savory beef/bean filling that has a subtle spicy kick. Space was clean and open, service was good! I'll be back to try the other patties. Also saw lots of folks ordering take out from here.

Yelp
First time here. Done in, great presentation. I like the good came out on a tray with thick dinner napkins. Makes a difference. It was clean, enough seating, they played reggae music which added to the ambience of the spot. I had the curry goat and a beef patty. My hubby had the jerk chicken. We also had the jerk wings and they were delicious! A little pricey but the flavor and authenticity was there. Good beef patties too. It's in a shopping complex, so parking is in on the top level and lower level. There are other food spots there so it can be get crowded with in and out traffic and it's off a busy corner of Santa Monica Blvd. You can also call it in for pick up as an option. Oh yes, good ginger beer

Andrea M.

Yelp
Order pick up. Chicken was burnt. Woman at the cash register not polite. Order was late despite receiving the sms.
google avatar

TomeiaMonae R.

Yelp
Food is absolutely the best Jamaican food in the city also very great customer service and you get what you pay for last need I tried jerk salmon the best I love this spot it's my 2nd time and a lifetime to go
google avatar

Suzette c.

Yelp
They have quick service and they are very polite. The food was good and I loved the pineapple ginger juice. Everything tasted fresh and the restaurant was very clean and had plenty space. I've eaten here a few times and its always good. It's even safe to have delivered the food was the same quantity as eating at the restaurant.
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Good spot for jamaican food. As soon as you walk in the smell is amazing. Which tells you a lot. We tried curry goat and jerk chicken. The jerk sauce is delicious. I love ting soda
google avatar

JdKnight Q.

Yelp
I hate to add this issue, but the last time we were there we ordered the fried chicken and it took 20 minutes more than the rest of the food. Also, the restaurant had a lot of small flies which were a bit of a nuisance.
google avatar

Jazmin E.

Yelp
Ordered the curry chicken and jerk chicken combos with a side of mac and cheese. Overall everything was good, but it was just good. Wasn't great or noteworthy.
google avatar

Karolina B.

Yelp
I ordered the jerk chicken entree and it was delicious! Sometimes the chicken can be a bit dry at some places, but their chicken was not dry at all. Everything on the entree was yummy. I will definitely be coming back and trying other entrees.

Yelp
Excited to see a Caribbean food restaurant on this side of town , so of course I wanted to try it . I ordered through a food app hoping my food would be ready by my arrival unfortunately that wasn't the case. I arrived several minutes after my expected pickup time . Upon entry the restaurant had two other patrons waiting for their food . There was only one staff member and I saw she was busy in the kitchen . After waiting a few minutes the staff member came to the front with one of the other patrons food. After she gave a customer her food , I informed her of my pickup order. She told me she had to get it from the back , so I assumed it was packed up and ready to go . NOPE. I had to wait maybe another 10minutes before I was finally given my food and I was last to get served. I ordered the jerk chicken, cabbage, rice&peas , mac &cheese, festival bread. After getting home I tried the Mac & cheese first. It was a nice heavy portion size but the flavor did not meet the mark , it could have used more seasoning. The chicken was cooked perfectly, the sauce made it even better. The cabbage was great , rice was dry , festival bread was hard (waste of money) and 1of 2 plantains were delicious the other one was old and hard. I wanna give grace to the woman working there since she was by herself hence the 4th star otherwise it would be a 3 star review but I have to be honest about my experience. If anything be prepared to wait a little longer than expected.

Larry B.

Yelp
Amazing flavors and generous portions. I have tried three different meals so far and they are all delicious. It's rare to find such authentic food in LA and I intend to frequent this establishment often. The service is great and everyone seems to feel the great food vibes.
google avatar

Desmond T.

Yelp
Mellow place. Food is incredible, I need to go back to try the beef patties. We all enjoyed the food.
google avatar

Malia F.

Yelp
I've been back a few times now and the food is consistently delicious! Highly recommend. It is so flavorful. I'm so impressed by how Smokey the meat is and the sauce is wow! The staff is very friendly. You can tell they cook the food with love. It's a must try!
google avatar

Manny K.

Yelp
The food was really good. Max and cheese was amazing and i had plantain for the first time here and it was so good. The jerk chicken was awesome. A really calm and cool place to be. And I must mention the juice they have is super good. Service is good too

A R.

Yelp
Support small business. The food is really good. The service is warm and friendly. Ox Tails for the win. Rice is fluffy and flavourful. Veggie Patties tons of flavour. The smile that welcomed me made me know I was gonna have a good meal. Thank you guys. Will be back 100%

Yelp
A nice night called for good food, was driving round Santa Monica was hungry as hell and it was a toss up between Hawaiian and Jamaican food!! So I decided to get Jamaican food, I don't usually try new food at a new restaurant! But going into a new place can be nerve racking, but my risk paid off as I was Impressed with my Food I had ordered. I went to Jerk stop off Santa Monica blvd. I ordered the jerk chicken, rice with peas and plantains. It was a short wait, service AAA service.. My food came out perfect wasn't too hot that I couldn't eat it fast lol Temperature, presentation and food was on point! The taste was amazing, had a nice kick to its spiciness just right! The texture was great, nice and soft, rice was fluffy with a good amount of peas not too overwhelming but on point! Canbbage it came with the entree was soft but with a nice crunch to it and plantains were amazing as well! The Mood set in the Restaurant was chill as if you're at home at Moms house eating with the fams. Great Ambiance in the environment, nothing needs to change on what they have going on as everything was to my liking!! Great job and maintain at The Jerk stop. Thank you again for my enjoyable dinner!

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time tonight and the food is amazing! I ordered takeout for a future time and the food was ready right on time. So, it was still nice and warm after a bus ride home. The online ordering system was a bit confusing. It gives you the option to select multiple options for sides and the sort. However some of the options should only allow you to select one or the other. For example, it allows you to select white rice and rice and beans, however, you can only choose one. The website could definitely use a few tweaks, otherwise it was very easy and all confusion was fixed with a quick call. I ordered the Jerk Chicken and oxtail combo with festival, plantain, and rice and peas. The oxtail is delicious; it was juicy and tender. Soooo good! The chicken was equally as good, not too dry and a nice kick to the seasoning. The oxtail is a must try for sure though! All the sides were just as tasty with the festival having a nice sweetness to it. I was originally perturbed by the price, but it is so worth it with the amount of food they load onto the plate. Will definitely be coming back and recommending this place!
google avatar

Tyonna Y.

Yelp
Food is delicious! First time I seen this place I tried the curry patty and it was better than expected. Now I have the large curry chicken plate and its chef kiss . Lot of flavor . Happy to see a new authentic Jamaican restaurant in the city of Santa Monica . They take Apple Pay as well and service is fast . 10/10 high recommend . Parking is first come first serve but you may find some in the parking lot or may have to street park .

Emilano A.

Yelp
Looked like shit but didnt taste like it !!!!! Just a reminder to not judge a book by its cover would eat again!!!!!
google avatar

Tristen L.

Yelp
Amazing food and customer service is friendly as well. Highly recommend! I grew up around a lot of Caribbean food and this is as good as it gets in LA.
google avatar

Holly T.

Yelp
Hungry me happen to be in the area. What was I in the mood for..... Jamaican food? This place popped up in my search, so I decided why not! I ordered on their app online, so my food is waiting for me when I arrived. I was greeted warmly by the attendant, behind the counter. Located in the upper portion of a strip mall; be prepared to climb some treacherous stairs or use an elevator. The shop is open and inviting, but I did not stay to eat. Love the reggae playing in the background! I got Jamaica's national dish: Ackee and Salt fish over rice and peas. It came with streamed vegetables, one festival and plantain (which is plural in Jamaica, lol). Beautifully displayed with a large amount of everything!! I did order a side of dumplings, but I didn't get it. Perhaps they were out and could be why my portions were huge to make up for it. This should go without saying: what a delicious meal!! Real Jamaican food is rich in flavor and tastes like home, if it's made right; trust this Jamaican here, they make it right!! They are off the beaten track a little bit ( meaning, I'm driving too fast to notice ). I've driven by them so many times and did not know they were there! I know now!! West LA has hidden gems!! Y'all need to come check it!
google avatar

Patrice V.

Yelp
The food is delish, flavorful & just the right amount of spice. This was the most comfortable and appeasing Jamaican spot I've gotten food from! Most times i order to go but inside was nice, open and clean. The staff were chill and helpful at the same time. Felt like i was at home in a relaxed chill vibe. Found my new fave Jamaican food spot!
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
I like it because it's spicy. Like that sneak up on you, oh this is going to clear my sinuses, spicy. I ordered the jerk shrimp with 2 sides for take out and the portion was massive. The staff is super friendly and cares that they get your order right. I was excited to see they joined the neighborhood and they did not disappoint. See you again soon!
google avatar

Noah M.

Yelp
Awesome food and nice staff. I ordered the jerk chicken which was insanely good! Worth walking up the stairs for ;)

Tania L.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and the food was delicious both times. I have had the beef patty, chicken patty, oxtails, and Calaloo. Perfection. Support this small, family and Black owned business!

Naiya H.

Yelp
Give this combination a tryso good. They have lots of food & drinks to choose from too. Patties are good & try the jerk wings!

Daisha B.

Yelp
Wayne was very helpful food is delicious and you get an amazing amount that is worth the price. Dishes: Curry Goat Jerk Shrimp Jerk Chicken Ackee and Salt Fish Beef and Jerk Chicken Patties All recommended!
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
Customer Service was great n all! The Cooks came out from the kitchen to see who they were serving. Did I get bless? No I did not! The Rice n peas was dry and burnt. Chicken was dry. I'm thinking how do you dry out dark meat? You left it on the grill all day bro. I can't set up the squad for failure! This Jamaican Jerk Stop Restaurant is all CAPP!!! Everyone please stick with the Jerk Spot on Venice. They Bless everyone.

Dahlia B.

Yelp
Jerk Stop is a go to for Jamaican food. Jerk chicken, fish, Rice and Beans, plantains and etc. You'll be hooked once you try them in this little family restaurant. Everything is delicious, and the service is friendly.
google avatar

Johnny D.

Yelp
Curry chicken was good. Jerk chicken was dry. Large portions but too much rice. It's not going to be one of my favorites

Jessica T.

Yelp
Excited to have a delicious Jamaican spot in the neighborhood! Generous portions and the chicken was excellent. Very juicy and the perfect spice
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Was excited to see this place opening, and the food was fantastic! We got the jerk chicken and jerk shrimp, and both were outstanding. Particularly loved the depth of flavor and heat in the chicken. The sides were also excellent as well. So happy to have Jerk Stop in the neighborhood, and definitely will be going back.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Nice people working there. Will definitely be going back regularly :)

Kiara R.

Yelp
I went to the Jerk Stop on Monday August 19, 2024 at about 8:30pm, the "girl" at the front taking orders is not who they should have in that position. She was very soft spoken and not helpful at all, I asked a question about a prices on the menus and all she had to say was she didn't know why the price was the way it was. She never went to inquire about it. I had to tell her several time that I couldn't hear or understand her behind the mask. That is not the type of person that should be in the front of an establishment. I honestly believe she should've removed from the front and maybe be sticking in the back so she doesn't have to talk to

Leigh S.

Yelp
The Meats are great, but not side dishes , they should change the recipes for them . Perhaps sample from other restaurants locally & out of state/country , to create something more .

Monique W.

Yelp
The food doesn't taste the same.. It's like overnight it was good then the next day it was a disaster What happened I will not be going back

Rebecca P.

Yelp
The best Jamaican food in Los Angeles! The curry goat is so delicious, and the spice level is just right. If you are a fan for some good plantains, you will love their plantains.

Susan P.

Yelp
Jerk chicken was good. Mac and cheese was also yummy. I liked the chicken patties a lot as well! I recommend checking out this spot. Support small businesses !

Nat N.

Yelp
So excited for this new store. After years of driving to Culver City and beyond, discovering this spot was a pleasant surprise (kudos for installing a flag!). To test out the food, I got a side of stewed chicken and a beef patty. The chicken was well-seasoned, and the patty was edible (a huge plus in LA). Customer service was excellent, as the gentleman was very friendly and conversational. The setting and ambiance look great. I am excited to try more items on my next visit.
