Jerk Fry City - Review - South Street - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Waiting to get a Jamaican platter at Kingston 11 should be an Olympic test for endurance. And now the same team has brought the hype and crispy fried jerk wings to South Street. The menu is lengthy—we’re talking over 40 choices, spanning from jerk chicken cheesesteak and calamari to rasta pasta and a gooey mac and cheese that you’ll wish was on your Thanksgiving table. But it’s the jerk chicken—in wing, sandwich, and garlic-parmesan tender form—that has everyone lining up. They’re deep fried and satisfyingly crunchy. Beware: it’s one of those shops where mild is actually spicy and spicy means you need a cookies and cream milkshake to bring the burn down. Head here on a weekday for a better chance of being in and out. Or dare to go on the weekend when the wait time doesn't matter as much as getting your hands on some tasty, peppery chicken." - Candis R. McLean

I visited from Florida and was really looking forward to trying their oxtail Philly cheesesteak, but unfortunately they were out of oxtails that day. It turns out this is a common issue based on other reviews, and you’ll notice when you walk in that they update the menu daily with what’s available. The food is on the pricier side, but to be fair, it’s absolutely delicious and the portions are huge. I had the jerk cheese sticks and the jerk chicken cheesesteak rolls, along with a drink, and my total came to about $30. Honestly, for the quality and amount of food, I thought it was worth it. The flavor was incredible and the side sauces were some of the most unique I’ve ever tasted. That said, if you’re not into spicy food, be warned. The jerk chicken is seriously spicy. I love African and Jamaican food, and I’ve had plenty of jerk, but this was hands down the hottest I’ve ever had. The flavor was fantastic, but the heat was so intense I could only finish two of the four rolls. I didn’t want to risk an upset stomach later, and yes, it really was that hot. Customer service was excellent. The woman who took my order was super friendly, as were the kitchen staff and a man I assumed to be the owner or manager. The wait was a bit long. I ordered at 1:40 PM and got my food at 2:17 PM, but everything was made fresh and that tradeoff is totally worth it. The spot itself is really small with no real space to sit and eat, so be prepared to take your order to go. Otherwise, I highly recommend trying them out. Hopefully you get to try the oxtails, and if you do, just know I’ll be over here jealous.

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience. The restaurant listed their opening time as 1 PM, but they didn’t open until 2:15 PM. Because of the delay, I ended up getting a ticket while waiting. I traveled over an hour specifically to try their oxtail, only to be told once I arrived that they didn’t have any. I ordered a few other items instead, but the food was honestly terrible—I didn’t end up eating any of it. If the food had been good, I might’ve let the inconvenience slide, but this was a complete waste of time and money.

My first time here was a mediocre experience...service was almost nonexistent and like with many I tried it because of all the social media hype and I was underwhelmed. The food was good but nothing I'd personally return for. Esthetically the food looks amazing, picture perfect however it's not all what it seems. In conclusion I will say I did have quality ingredients and coming from the food industry I can understand their pricing.

Don't go in expecting everything on the menu. They don’t answer the phone, so when you get there in person, a menu will show black dots next to items they actually have. Traveled from Baltimore for the oxtail cheesesteak, they didn't have any oxtail at all. Blew me and my lady bad. The wait time is too long. Their cooking area is small. The line space is cramped so there is no such thing as personal space. We Ordered the following: Jerk general tso cheesesteak: 10/10 - huge quantity, well seasoned and the sweet sauce cuts the jerk spice. Recommend if they have no oxtail. Jerk chicken egg rolls: 7/10 flavorful but super spicy. Salmon egg rolls: 9/10 very good. Dipping sauce is just a sweet/spicy bbq Brussels sprouts: 10/10 spectacular but super messy. Ask for container to be wrapped OR put in the bag the right way. Lady put ours in opening up and all of the honey spilled on everything.

I heard so much about this place and was able to try them out while there yesterday. Strictly a takeout spot. You go in to order and they'll call cell when ready , it took about 30mins. The items with large portion were pricey, but they have options on the menu that were reasonable. My food choices were Jerk chicken Rasta Pasta(spicey), Salmon egg rolls, jerk Mozzarella sticks and mac& cheese. Everything was good!! I received Chicken jerk egg rolls which were good but not what I ordered. Over all enjoyed what I had ,so....if in the area try them out !!!

Do not believe the hype!!! TikTok did not get this one right🤦🏾‍♀️ I spent $75 for what:/ The food was basic; nothing special:( The service was horrible:( And parking on South St is not my cup of tea( Philadelphia Parking Authority):/ And to top it off; they didn’t have nothing on the menu:/ Most of everything was sold out😒To which I thought was a good thing at first; until I got what I could get/order🤦🏾‍♀️Definitely won’t be coming back!!!

Food was just okay. The oxtail cheese steak is $35. 4 whole 4 wings will cost you $17. Wings are a nice color but not a whole lot of flavor. And usually a half hour or more wait for your order. This place seems really overhyped without the flavor to back it up. There are many items on the menu but they never seem to have them all. You find out what they have when you get there and see a black ⚫️ dotted menu marking what is available that day.

Foodie Beware! Walked in ready to order, but there was no menu board in sight — just a single crusty menu paper taped to the countertop with several menu items crossed out. Tried checking their website beforehand, but apparently “menu” was just a decorative button. That section was blank. I say to the cashier, can I have the chicken fingers. She looks at me highly confused and says huh? I was confused at her confusion. So I switched it up and I instead say chicken strips? But she was still looking at me crazy. She then says the chicken tendazzz. All I’m saying is, if understanding “chicken strips” whilst working at a chicken spot throws you into a spiral, get off the register. Why act like you don’t know what I’m talking about? To turn around and correct me when you were purposefully trying to misunderstand what I was requesting in the first place. Sadly, she did this same thing to the customer behind me too. And once you order, settle in and kick your feet up because the wait is no joke. If you’re on a schedule or low on patience, this ain’t the spot. The heat in that place? Disrespectful. You could fry the chicken on the countertop. The AC was clearly on break — along with the customer service. All of the customers opted to wait for their food outside because it was way cooler outside than it was inside. For your reference, it was approximately 87 degrees outside that day. Once my food was finally ready (40 mins later) the chicken was decent, but their prices? I should’ve brought a co-signer with me. The chicken came seasoned and flavorful but so did the bill, with a strong hint of economic delusion. The food’s doing all the heavy lifting, because nothing else is. Do better JFC, or don’t— South Street’s swallowed up better restaurants and she is STILL hungry.
