The Best Chicken-Fried Steak Is Served at Jerry’s in East Texas - Eater Houston

"Jerry’s has come a long way in the 50-plus years that it’s been open. The four-burner stove that my grandmother cooked on is now a multiple-griddle operation that employs four or five cooks at any given time, and what was solely a small family business has a full kitchen staff. The restaurant has returned to serving freshly made desserts, with Jeanne Ann still developing different takes on the lemon icebox pie her dad loved (chocolate and blueberry are proven hits). Folks often pull in expecting a burger and are blown away by an array of dishes that are well-loved in East Texas: boudin balls, fried green tomatoes, frog legs, stuffed crab, and the newest addition, a chicken-fried rib-eye. We don’t know who will inherit it and keep Jerry’s going after Jeanne Ann, the last of the Smiths to work there full time, retires — for now, at least. But someone’s going to have to keep Friday and Saturday night all-you-can-eat catfish suppers going. We’ll figure it out — we always have." - Courtney E. Smith

I stopped in today after my visit to first Monday, and we instantly greeted by very welcoming staff. Once we got up to the register the lady who was taking our order was seemingly in a rush. Being the only customers in the store I was a little shocked at her behavior. I ordered a small pizza with Alfredo, (which I had gotten the month prior)and the cashier told me I wasn’t able to get Alfredo on the small only on their medium and large. I am very sensitive to red sauce so having to settle with it was a little disappointing. After ordering we grabbed our drinks just to see that she had given us the wrong drink as well. We were able to get the drink issue rectified and sat down and waited for our order. The atmosphere and vibe in this restaurant is exactly what we need after a long day in the sun. We received our pizza and as usual it was delicious! While enjoying my pizza I looked behind my seat and saw MOUSE POOP!!! it was definitely not something I wanted to see when enjoying my lunch. I guess the standard for service and overall cleanliness is not a concern. If you’re looking for yummy pizza, piss poor customer service, and possibly a new pet mouse, this is definitely the place!

My husband and I recently moved to the area, and have so enjoyed their pizza! Consistent and fresh!! The crust is the perfect marriage of thin crust and hand tossed. I grew up in the north so mom and pop pizza places have always been a priority and this place has not disappointed! Last night I ordered a giant pizza and when I went to pick it up a large was handed to me, I asked the cashier if she could check my ticket. I'm very pregnant and could have ordered a large when I meant to order a giant 🤷🏻‍♀️ She said, no you absolutely ordered a giant this is our mistake. She then asked if I wanted to keep the large? Ummm, yes please!! I enjoyed a few slices while waiting on my giant to take home. My preggo self and hubby and kiddos were VERY thankful for the extra and for such a positive customer service experience. I can see why they sell shirts that say raised on Jerry's. So so good!

Google
The pizza is fantastic, and the meatballs perfectly made. This place will make u feel comfortable like being at home. Hands down the best pizza around. If you haven't tried it. It's definitely something you don't want to miss out on.

Google
Hidden gem! A welcome and delicious meal after Canton. It wasn’t busy around 3pm so we weren’t sure how it’d be but it was the best decision for food before heading back to DFW. Would highly recommend. Plus they offer gluten free crusts.

Upon entering we were unsure of what the procedure was. No one seemed willing to say, "Hey I can take your order over here when you're ready," and we were clearly trying to figure out if we were supposed to sit or order at the counter. Then we ordered and everything was much higher than expected after looking at the menu but ok. We were given a number but still no direction even though we told them this was our first visit. We went and found a table and waited, but I had seen a sign in the counter that said "pick up pizza here." So that caused confusion with pizza pickup. One of our party had to seek out someone to clarify what we were actually supposed to be doing. If you want a refill I guess you are supposed to go back to the counter. I'm not sure about that still. The food was really good, but EVERYTHING was SUPER overpriced. We won't be going back. We could have gotten much better pizza and amazing service for less at the Craft 64 place not far away. You live and learn I guess. I know for next time.

Google
1st time here, would certainly return. Had a meat lovers pizza that was very tasty. There were some interesting choices on the menu for those wanting a less traditional pizza, and of course you can design your own. Good looking salads also. Great place to meet friends and visit!

Google
Love the atmosphere here!!! The staff is so kind and attentive. The service is great! The pizza is great! Love home town, small business places. And they’ve redecorated!!!! Very enjoyable visit! We split one medium build your own with 3 toppings and one soda for $20. Pretty reasonable too!

Google
We ate here for the first time. You order at the counter and they bring your pizza. The pizza was very fresh. The vegetables on the pizza were fresh. The crust was fresh thin and crunchy. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely come back again. The staff was friendly. They have a pool table in another room. The place was comfy and clean. Yelp
Hands down some of best pizza going. Establishment couldn't have been any friendlier, and that goes along way these days. Salad very tasty and more than happy they offer thousand island dressing bc less and less restaurants have it lately. Back to the pizza, plenty of toppings and thin crust was (almost) perfect. We definitely like a "crispier" crust and even asked for well done but for us we like it more well cooked than they served. Next time we'll explain better that we prefer a crispier crust. Yes, this will now be a frequent stop on our travels from Louisiana to Texas. Great job "Jerry!"

Yelp
We go here about once a month when we are at canton first Mondays. Pizza is freshly made to our liking. And customer service is on spot on!!

Yelp
Good pizza lot of toppings good customer service and clean place to dine will love the thin crust

Yelp
Good Pizza, no complaints. Quick Drive Thru Service. Prices are competitive as ingredients are higher quality than chain places.

Planet J.

Yelp
Amazing service, and their food is delicious! We have gotten pizza and a salad and nother menu item. For the price it's fairly cheap for a good amount of food! The workers are delightful to be around. And it's cute and cozy in the building and it looks like a great meet spot to chill with friends!

Yelp
Called a day ahead of time to see if they would be open on NY Eve! They told me open until 8:30! Drove from Arlington to visit family & pick up pizza. Called at 6:30 to order & they said they closed at 6!! Unacceptable service! Shame on you!!! Edited! Donna called & apologized for miscommunication! Said half price off next order! Thx!

Lance T.

Yelp
Completely messed up my order... did not offer to make it right. Very overpriced. I would not eat here again.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way to Dallas and were pleasantly surprised. Excellent pizza and outstanding staff. Everyone was courteous and attentive. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Decided to give this pizza joint a try. While visiting my kids/grands we stopped by to grab some dinner for everyone. With 4 adults and 3 kids I got 2 giants and 1 Lg. They were hot and fresh when we arrived for pickup. They are only doing drive thru right now, due to staff shortage. Let me just say, the staff was friendly and doing it all with a smile. They had 3-4 cars in-line the whole time we were waiting. Thing is that they were fast and efficient. Back to the pizzas. We got a pepperoni,a cheese, and a supreme w/o anchovies. They were all great! Crust was perfect and tasty. The perfect amount of ingredients for a full giant and large. If y'all are ever in the Canton area, you need to try them out. Just call 30 mins ahead of time and it will be piled high with fresh ingredients, steaming hot. All 3 pizzas were less than $50, with a tip. So worth every dime to feed a family of 7. And still had leftovers the next day

Yelp
This pizza shop is fabulous! The entry, dining area and restrooms are super clean, inviting and with the perfect amount of decor that gives it warm, comfortable appeal. Ambient music was at the perfect level and a very good selection (Blues, I think). The walk-up counter is open, well-signed with selection and pricing, and the Associate taking customer orders was friendly with clean and appropriate attire. The open kitchen/food prep area was immaculate, well-maintained and organized. Associates were focused on serving customers. The pizza was the best I've had in the Canton, Kaufman, Kemp and Mabank area...by far! Two small areas that need focus: outside building is plain and not as well maintained as the interior, and, the AC vent to the left of the order counter needs attention...I'm sorry. Overall, incredible dining experience...I will most definitely make this my go-to pizza location. Congratulations on a very successful business from a customer perspective!!

Yelp
Jerry's remains amazing and extremely delicious. The staff is always kind and give great service. I love their sausage topping. I don't live nearby so whenever I visit I usually order 4 pizzas so I can enjoy some back in DFW. I've been going since I was a kid and cannot believe how much the folks that run Jerry's continue to care and invest in this restaurant. They redid the inside and it looks wonderful. Comfortable ambiance with several TVs available. Thank you Jerry's staff !

Weston M.

Yelp
All around great experience! A classic East Texas pizza joint located in Canton. Grew up going as a kid in the 90s, glad to see its back open after renovations and new management! Pizza was great and tasted just like it use to! Service was friendly and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Best pizza around the area. Indoor seating is still closed so it's drive thru only now. I'm a mushroom and black olive pizza lover and Jerry's does not disappoint.

Dwayne C.

Yelp
Outstanding friendly people with great food. Tasty pizza with an oversized "small" salad. Take a sample

Yelp
I hate to put this out there but we had a 32$ meat lovers pizza that was terrible ! Tasteless the Italian sausage rolled off every time you tried to pick up a piece. At one time Jerry's was the best but not now
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
this is the best pizza in Canton Texas! I grew up and it has all ways remained the say quality and consistency!

Katie B.

Yelp
I grew up in Chicago and lived near New York so I know pizza... And this is GOOD pizza! There is something so deliciously nostalgic about it. We eat here at least once a week and have never been disappointed

Yelp
I rolled into town from Austin, pulling a trailer behind my old Chevy and jackknifing it in the parking lot. This led to a reminder that while I was born here, I don't necessarily fit in, as a small girl in a jacked up F-250 offered to drive my truck for me. "No thanks", I said. It felt good to be home. I stepped into the doorway of 1990-something and had a flashback of feeding quarters into the arcade machines and pool table, playing Van Halen on the jukebox and thinking the old folks hated it. The game room is almost empty now, a whisper to a bygone era where Street Fighter was king. What hasn't changed is the pizza. Jerry's has its own flavor unlike any other pizza I've had anywhere else. I have tried many times to recreate its special flavor, all to no avail. Some say it's a special recipe that gives Jerry's its special flavor. I like to think it's a little bit of love...and magic.

Tiger D.

Yelp
I give Jerry's Pizza a 3 only because it was edible. The pictures on yelp and the website are misleading to say the least. The owner claims the dough is made fresh daily, I think it's more likely thawed daily. I read one review that likened these pizzas to Tony's or Totinos pizza or other frozen fare you get at your grocery store, that was spot on. Although our mushroom and sausage pizza did have a LOT of sausage, it barely had ANY mushroom... I would guess it might have had barely more than one mushroom sliced thinly on a medium size pizza. The sausage is the typical frozen sausage nuggets like you see on cheap frozen pizza. Overall I am pretty disappointed- and if this is the "best in Van Zandt county 5 years running" Then DiGiorno pizza will BLOW YOUR MIND!
google avatar

Yelp
Ketchup on a hub cap. Jerry's is a good ad for Red Baron from your grocer's freezer. Sad! But note that locals seem to like it, however if you know what good pizza actually tastes like and are from out of town, you will be unimpressed. Service not impressive as well. Seriously, try Alex's, or for pizza go with the excellent 3D or even your locally-owned Pizza Hut on Trade Days Blvd., which is good as far as chains go. Also when we asked if we could BYOB wine - I think Jerry's is dry tho Canton went wet - the staff fervently insisted that it was "illegal". I guess they need to tell that to the restaurants in town (e.g., Alex's) that kindly do let you bring your own. TABC says: "BYOB .. nothing in state law prohibits a guest from bringing their own alcoholic beverages into an establishment that is not licensed to sell alcoholic beverages." https://www.tabc.state.tx.us/faq/general.asp. My view: if Jerry's doesn't want to, fine, just don't be ignorant and insist you are right when you don't have a clue.

Yelp
This place was recommended by some close friends of ours and we were not disappointed. Our salad and pizza were great. The staff was courteous and the place was clean. We loved our experience here.

Hannah M.

Yelp
Hands down best pizza that's been around for years!! We go to Jerry's any chance we get! If you want some darn good pizza with a homemade touch go to Jerrys! We always have birthday dinners here and the staff doesn't mind one bit! If your party is on the larger side like ours is most of the time, they will open the back room for you.

Craig B.

Yelp
Best pizza in town make there own dough and lots of toppings always ready on time never had a bad experience eat there once a week
google avatar

Leah F.

Yelp
Best pizza in Canton! I've always been a fan, but you can really tell the difference in the quality since Martha has been back! Our go-to for pizza night.

Susan T.

Yelp
Right now they are still doing carry out only. Our pizza was only warm. Toppings were sparse. Don't think I will be going back again

Cindy R.

Yelp
We love Jerry's Pizza. It's always consistent we usually order when we are at Millcreek RV Resort. Always a treat!

Suzi H.

Yelp
Best ever pizza! Stopped there once on my way from East TX back to DFW Metroplex probably more than 30 years ago and it's been a family favorite ever since. We love Jerry's Pizza. It's so different than chain pizza - it has the best crispy crust and wonderful, marvelous cheese. We try to plan our trips through Canton to coincide with their hours - it's a big disappointment to us if we miss an opportunity to have a Jerry's pizza.

Julie B.

Yelp
They have a large TV on the wall, the pizzas very good, and my kids love to play the games here

Megan D.

Yelp
Have been coming to Jerry's Pizza for years and absolutely love the pizza. Unfortunately can't say the same about the staff. Seems like it continues to go downhill. The staff doesn't pay attention when anyone walks in the door, will literally turn their back on customers so they don't have to help them, and will turn customers away that come in to order food. We went in tonight and after 15 minutes of waiting at the front counter an employee came up with a sour attitude and told all the customers at the counter that the pizza would take too long and wouldn't take any orders. It was 6:20, not anywhere close to closing time. They literally turned four families down for ordering, and were completely rude about it.
google avatar

Geoffrey H.

Yelp
Damn good Pizza. Eat it every chance I get when I get hungry for pizza. 100 x better than Pizza Hut or any other chain pizza.

Alex L.

Yelp
Have been there a couple of times, and have a pleasant experience. Very good pizza, good friendly service and owner Jerry very neat person. Serving staff are very personable.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
We got two pies, one cheese and one 1/2 pepperoni and the other half Canadian bacon. Gotta say that all 7 of us who ate these pies LOVED IT. The meats were excellent and greasy, just as you would expect and the cheese pizza was excellent as well. I am still shocked that all three pizza places in Canton do not deliver though...

K K.

Yelp
This is my all-time favorite pizza joint! There isn't anywhere better!! Their sausage is my favorite! If you like special pizzas I also believe they have the best around! If I'm ever passing through to Dallas or from I always stop and get some Jerry's! It's been a family tradition for as long as I can remember! Oh and always buy extra to take with you....you'll want some the next day....trust me on this!!!

Julie H.

Yelp
Great pizza with a crispy crust and lots of toppings. The chef salad is excellent. Fun atmosphere! Great to go too.
google avatar

Wesley S.

Yelp
There's nothing special about having pizza from this place since could've gone eaten at a cici's buffet a lot cheaper than this place and gotten the same quality of food.
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
I no longer live in the East TX area, but stop by as often as I can. Still to today, it's my favorite pizza!! I'm not one to stop at pizza joints very often when I travel, but I'd HIGHLY recommend stopping here if you're driving through town.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Pizza was solid. Plenty of toppings, crust was fresh and crispy. I would prefer more sauce as I didn't get a taste of it in any bite except those at the crust. Service was a bit curt. Young ladies that didn't seem they wanted to be there. I didn't realize it was counter service, which is a definite minus. If they refreshed the interior decor, added table service and served beer and wine, this would be an excellent place!
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
I remember the original location where Jerry's began. My father and Jerry were friends so that meant eating Jerry's pizza when we wanted pizza back in the day. Prior to that you had to drive to Tyler or Terrell to get pizza. Thin Crust, with everything on it and Jerry's seems to get it right every time we have eaten there since the 70's! We visit Canton often and still love stopping in from time to time for the pies and the memories. It was the last place I was able to eat out with my mother before she passed away in September of 2010. Good Food, Great Times and above all wonderful memories. I am glad some things stay the same!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Awesome pizza! One of the best I have ever had. It looks old and run down on the outside but it is extremely clean on the inside.
google avatar

Marty M.

Yelp
I hope they never close. The only pizza I love sure the others are ok but not like Jerrys. Hope yall have someone to take over and continue the great pizza when yall decide to retire.

Steven J.

Yelp
Few things, when it comes to eating, is better than your favorite pizza joint. This is most definitely it. Plenty of toppings and cheese. Excellent crust-not too thick, not too thin. Always great quality and a clean dining area! Also a great place to host a birthday party.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Jerry's is our go to spot for family dinners! Everyone loves their pizza. It is just right. It's also nice to see the girls making them in the back and watching them roll out of the oven. They have a big room in the back that is avaiable for parties or just big familes like ours. The game room is a nice addition as well. If you want some good pizza this is the place to go.

Joseph B.

Yelp
Expensive and only have thin crust... not impressed at all. Would rather eat a frozen pizza. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad, it's just not good or how I like pizza.
