A group of five recently gathered for a birthday luncheon. We actually sat indoors on a beautiful afternoon, because the birthday girl doesn't like to sit in the sunlight. Bummer! Because of that, we were the only party inside the restaurant.
This was not a heavy drinking crowd. I had a beer called Maplewood Brownie Points, and it was delicious.
The group ordered chips and salsa and a hummus appetizer. Both were fine, nothing special. I was a little disappointed in the hummus appetizer. When I ate at Jerry's last October, it included carrots, celery, pita bread, and cucumber. Now it just has bread and cucumber.
The entrees included the Mac & Cheese with poblano peppers and a side salad, and the Rachel sandwich. Sorry, I don't recall what the others were. Probably because I have just about zero tolerance for alcohol, and one beer was plenty for me. These two entrees were greatly enjoyed, and each was enough for two servings. i suppose that's a bargain, figuring that you get two meals for the price of one.
The birthday girl was surprised with a large piece of chocolate cake a single candle on it. We sang happy birthday to her and sliced up the cake, dividing it among four people. There was still cake left over, so that was a very generous slice, and everybody remarked on how delicious it was.
Only one thing bothered me, and, in this time of Covid and Delta variant, that is the mask issue. The menu asked that patrons wear a mask while speaking to the server. That's absolutely good and fine, and the proper thing to do. However, the waiter wore his mask around his neck and never placed it on his face. Never. Nobody said anything to him about it or complained to anyone. I admit to being somewhat fascinated by it -- was he going to realize he wasn't wearing it? Would the bartender say, put your mask on, it won't protect you around your neck, unless you're breathing through a trachea tube. Nothing. The whole two hours we were there, it was around his neck.
I talked to the birthday girl the next day and said, should I call the manager and tell him? She said, don't do it, you don't want to get the server fired. I doubt he'd get fired, but to play it safe, I never called. I do think we were wrong by not saying anything to him. If this happened in the future, I would definitely say something like, did you forget your mask?
Bottom line: Jerry's is a fine restaurant with a large selection of food and beverages. It's a good place to celebrate anything, or just hang out over a good meal.
