Where to Eat or Drink After Hiking in Oregon - Eater Portland

"Hikers returning from Table Mountain or other points on the Washington side of the Gorge should pop by the small-but-mighty stretch of restaurants along Southeast Chkalov. Jerusalem Cafe has been serving east Vancouver family recipes of Southwest Asian and Northern African food for more than 20 years, from simple hummus-filled pita and stuffed grape leaves to richly seasoned lamb and chicken platters. The dining room is simple but warm. Takeout is available, but the strip mall housing Jerusalem Cafe does not allow outdoor dining." - Nathan Williams

Had a Lamb and Chicken special take out with Baklava. Really disappointed about meat quantity and quality, portions were tiny and chewy (over cooked). $30 for these two items felt rip off.

Solid spot. The food was on point and service was fast and communicated well. Don't let the place fool you, they take a lot of care with their food and customers. There is a lot of heart and pride that goes into this place and itt's all old school.. I ordered the Lamb Shish Kebab and the little lady ordered the Greek salad with Gyro. Meats were super delish and salads tasted fresh. If you don't like something tell them, they believe in connecting with customers and making that place great.

Google
We enjoyed the hummus, samosas and garlic chicken. The portions were generous and the server pleasant and attentive. The rice was a little dry and I would have liked it with more salt. My husband and I split the dinner and we both had food leftover.

Wow! Today my husband and I ate here for the first time 😋 😋😋😋😋 We were so impressed with the quality and flavors of the entrees! The pita bread, hummus, baba ghanoush, salad plate... chicken, rice and the mint tea, coupled with the very friendly service, pleasant atmosphere, and reasonable prices provided us with a great dining experience! We even bought extra hummus and pita to go!💯💯🙌🙌 Definitely on my repeat list!

Google
(UberEats) Food & Drinks - 3.0 (food) Presentation- 3.0 Atmosphere- N/A Customer service - N/A Value - 2.0 They forgot our pita bread, and one full salad—a friend was kind enough to share his full salad with me b/c you definitely need the salad. I ordered their 'lamb & chicken special' and it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Rice was dry—most likely old, and the mixed pieces of lamb and chicken didn’t have that lemon-garlic flavor my palate was looking for. Without the salad…I probably would’ve rated the food a bit lower. My friend swears the food is good here—he just doesn’t know what went wrong that night. I’d give this place another chance, and dine-in. Change my mind on my delivery experience.

Google
Super disappointed as well. Not at all impressed and I am sad about it. Tried twice and both times disappointed and they have so much potential. The dishes/entree are just not impressive for the cost, and basically very low key and nothing to write home about. Kabobs are just... meh. Small-ish, and rice lacking any flavors except mildly yellow, and comes with a few bites of greens and 1 spoonful of cheese served in a small plastic cup. After two earnest tries despite they are friendly and have great intentions... it's just not worth the time and money. It's really sad. I really want this restaurant to thrive... but it will be quite unlikely.

I haven't had too much Mediterranean food in my life, but I've heard great things about Jerusalem Café and really wanted to give it a try with my mother. The restaurant setting was very casual, but with a calm and underwhelming atmosphere. The woman who served us was super sweet and got us our food surprisingly quickly. I found the pita bread to be addictive, cooked perfectly. The lentil soup wasn't my favorite, but I'm generally not a big fan of lentils and that is the reason why. I would still recommend trying it. I had the garlic chicken and really liked it. Full of flavor, and I loved the large amount of parsley garnishing it. I also found the side of rice to be delicious. I got a couple of baklavas for dessert and they were very satisfying.

Google
The Nan bread and humus was incredible. The garlic fries are better than anything I've ever had before. The gyro was also very tasty. I'm normally a guy who eats lots of fast food. So this was incredible to me. No wonder why my uber eats customers love it so much. Also the service is incredible. Very pleased atmosphere as well. I will definitely be back soon and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Yelp
Great customer service, authentic restaurant, and a great atmosphere. We chose to sit behind the curtains for the more traditional experience. We ordered samosas, lamb, gyro and I had the chicken soup . Everything was so good, even the soup. And we ended with knafeh. I have always ordered for them via door dash but it was our first time dining in. Definitely a gem in Vancouver. Would come back! Get the lamb - it's so tender.

Yelp
Was in the mood for a falafel sandwich and picked up one to go for $9.50. It was good. Not the best ever but really solid. Would definitely get again. Service was good.

Yelp
I drive by this place often and I wasn't actually sure what to expect so I went in with a relatively open mind. I will say that I did not go in during a meal time. It was around 4:00 p.m. and I was the only person in the restaurant. Given the fact that I was the only person there, I assumed the service would be relatively quick and friendly and it was definitely quick. The food came out fast, though the service left a lot to be desired. I had to flag the server down to even get a refill on water, and honestly the food....well. Given that I had never been here before and I was not in a dinner time, I figured I would order something cafe like. Something light, and to go with that, the server recommended a lamb shawarma wrap. The wrap came out in about 6 minutes and was ice box cold. Pita, everything inside, ECT. The bread was brittle and kinda tough, the rap lacked enough sauce so the wrap was incredibly dry, and it was all just....bland. That's how I would rate it. I really like lamb a lot. But there was no seasoning to this shawarma. I actually considered asking for a side of a sauce just to make it less dry. The server never came back to check on me and I had to flag them down just to get my bill. Maybe it's different during a meal rush, but I don't think I would come back. I wouldn't say that it was a bad experience, but I don't know that I would spend my money here given the choice.

Yelp
**Absolutely Horrific Experience at Jerusalem Café - Avoid at All Costs!** I don't even know where to begin with how utterly appalled I am by our dining experience at Jerusalem Café. This place, supposedly "iconic" since 1996, should be ashamed of what they're serving to customers today. We started with the *the worst* " samosas" I've ever had. They were soggy, limp, and practically hollow. It was like biting into wet cardboard with a faint memory of chickpeas. Disgusting. My wife ordered the chicken shawarma, which resembled a baby's diaper that had been left in a refrigerator for days. Not only was there barely any chicken (if you can call it that), but what was there was minced into an unidentifiable mush. We're pretty sure it was still half-frozen! She couldn't even stomach a bite before she had to spit it out in horror. I had to give her my *chicken and lamb dinner*--if you can even call it a meal. The "lamb" portion was maybe half an ounce of overcooked jerky. It could have passed for shoe leather at this point. The chicken (or what I'm praying was chicken) was soft and slimy, resembling tofu that had been tossed around on the floor. It had no flavor, no texture, just pure nastiness. I have never in my life experienced a meal so repulsive that it made me physically nauseous right after. The sheer thought of what I ate makes me want to throw up. To think that this restaurant has been serving people since 1996 is beyond comprehension. Whoever is running this place now has no business in the kitchen. The owner should be mortified by the utter disgrace that Jerusalem Café has become. If this is the legacy they're leaving behind, God help us all. STAY AWAY unless you want to ruin your day and possibly your stomach.

Yelp
At first we were impressed by the visual of the mezza platter, but then becamincreasingly disappointed with each bite. The falafel and pita were very weak. And some of the items tasted very salty. I guess when you've experienced fresh/homemade bread then it's tough to go back to prepackaged and reheated. We regularly shop at Barbur foods in Portland and every grocery version of is better. I did enjoy my Turkish coffee. What they have going is value as portions were more than fair. Lastly, our server was very kind.

Yelp
I have no idea why this place has anything less than a 5. Service was great and the food..........WOW! Very quaint and laid back atmosphere. I will definitely be back again and again.

Yelp
Delicious food! Fresh and warm pitas. Yum! Falafel is so good too! Fantastic hummus! Fast, friendly service! Definitely going back for more!!!

Yelp
I was coming down the road tonight to try to pull into the parking lot and whoever picked up your female employee up almost ran me off the road. I will not be back to give my business.

Yelp
The service here is extremely slow! We walked in, sat down and waited about 15 min until someone walked up and acknowledged us. This was after 2pm- not during a rush Ordered water and our food. Waited a total of 30 min and still no water- got our food in literally about an hour after sitting down. The place wasn't packed so it's not like they were very busy when we came in. Food: shush kabob are the smallest kabobs I've ever seen. Because of the size, they're very dry- not juicy. Kafta kabob is also crispy dry. Everything else was fine.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with an amazing staff. This place is small-ish, but always busy with to-go orders and sometimes the seating can fill up. It's no wonder why - the food is incredible and the staff is super friendly. If you have ever wanted to try authentic Turkish coffee, you can find it here. The fries are soft, thick steak fries and I love ordering them with garlic. This family has been running restaurants for a long time and they make delicious food.

Yelp

Yelp
I haven't been here in over 10 years, i used to like this place back in the day. We were in the area so thought we'd check it out... Our waitress was SOO sweet and I talky wanted to like this place, a lot, but as beautiful as the food was (and it looked YUMMY) it lacked seasoning, texture and flavor. It was empty the entire time we were there, maybe this is why.
google avatar

Amelia W.

Yelp
I love this place and get takeout every time I am in the area. I look at some of the other reviews, and they feel like they're describing a different place than my experience. I think the food here is amazing. I am so excited to start my Mazza platter! Yum!

Yelp
The food is not very good..... this is not a mediator Ian restaurant that we go back again...... that was the first and last time we went.... We ordered from the kids menu for our daughters, the chicken was so spicy and my daughter complained about it and we thought she is making excuse to not eat.... But when I tasted it, it was as spicy as our food and it was really a lot for her. When I asked why the kids food is very spicy, they just said, sorry we will tell the chef. Then we asked to give us some rice that she can eat, and she said we will charge if you want extra.... But we had no options since my daughter could not eat anything else..... even our food was not very good and way too spicy..... anyway, I will not recommend this place to anyone and I heart Gyro is definitely much better place to go and eat in Vancouver, WA, area.

Yelp
Really nice place. Took the family out to enjoy some Mediterranean and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Pleasant experience and the host was gracious. Their vegetarian options are aplenty and sufficient for the hungriest patron.

Markus Y.

Yelp
This use to have very tasty food to eat, the brothers who own it are no longer there, the place has changed management the food is ok nothing special. They have the same menu items but they need the old recipes. The chicken on fire is bland. The shawarma needs more and different spices. Where is the tabouli it was great. The service is good but the food is lacking. I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
This is the most disgusting Middle Eastern food I've ever had and I've been a fan of this cuisine for over 40yrs. If I save just one person from wasting money on garbage masquerading as "food" then I've done my job. Go ANYWHERE else.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for middle eastern dining I recommend the Jerusalem Cafe. Wonderful vegetarian cuisine. Many options for sandwiches, entrée and salad. Friendly staff with good service.

Yelp
All I can say is 'Thank you'! I've been wanting to visit here for quite a while and, now, I'm so glad that I did. They were open despite all the current COVID issues. The place looks very clean. There is hand sanitizer available upon entering and also at the counter. I had the gyro sandwich with garlic fries and I'm not exaggerating when I say that both were absolutely delicious. I'm saving the stuffed grape leaves for later ;) The interior decor is very pleasant and inviting. I wished dining in were available, as it would be nice to relax and enjoy the atmosphere for awhile. As for the staff, I can honestly say that I received a genuine heartfelt welcome. I sensed real grace and gratitude. So happy I was able to visit!

Yelp
Ordered for delivery thru Grubhub so can't speak to customer service. We order the mezze platter, an order of falafel balls, side of rice and extra pita. Delivery was on time. Food was pretty underwhelming and expensive for quantity and quality provided. The platter included red cabbage and chili sauce which turned everything pink. Very visually unappealing. The tahini has been replaced with a sour cream ranch tasting ? something. Tabbouleh very dry, no dressing. Really good baba ganoush, ok hummus, chopped tomato and cucumber salad, stale tasting potato salad, 2 stuffed grape leaves, red and green cabbage salads, and a few falafel. All served in a plastic tray together so most things were blended. And that strange out of place chili sauce? Don't know about that. Five of the tiniest falafel balls about the size of a quarter each, served on a few pieces of lettuce with a side of the ranch? for 8.40 definitely not a decision to repeat. The side of rice for almost 6.00 arrived completely cold and was flavorless. We used to enjoy the food here, but today was a big disappointment. Definitely won't do delivery again, uncertain whether we'd go in person.

Tammy N.

Yelp
Went here due to one of the people in our group said it was good. I hadn't been here for a long time and now I remember why. Only 2 other tables with clients. They had their food already. Service was very poor. Food was a total miss and slow. We had a variety of easy dishes. 2 sandwiches, 1 salad, one cup of soup and a massa plate. Sandwiches were the only thing that was acceptable. 99% of massa plate was left. Worst I've ever experienced. Cold pita. Cold plate which was fine but the hummus, tzatziki and baba were the worst I've ever had. There are much better places and more authentic Mediterranean food to eat in Clark county. Don't bother to eat here. Can't believe they are still in business.

Yelp
So good! We have driven by this place for years and have always been hesitant to each at strip mall restaurants. After looking at reviews online for delivery and yelp, we placed an online order to pick up. The order was ready when we got there, and the restaurant was pretty full given that it was fairly late on a Sunday night. It seems like it's a very popular and authentic place. We loved the food so much that we placed another order a week later and shared a meal with our parents. We all agreed that it was very fresh and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
The environment here is relaxing. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and the music is quiet and fits in well with the style of the restaurant. One of the things I dislike about some restaurants nowadays is how the music played is rock or hip hop or pop. Most of the time it doesn't even fit the style of the restaurant and makes conversation challenging when it's too loud. The menu is simple and the food is good. I had the Jerusalem fish, which is a seasoned and pan-fried tilapia served on a bed of yellow rice with a cucumber tomato salad on the side. Very tasty, though a touch too salty the second time I ate here. My husband had the chicken shwarma once, and the hummus lamb another time. He enjoyed them both. We had the pita bread and hummus appetizer. The pita was a bit dry the second time but still warm and good. The hummus here is excellent. Our waitress was sweet and attentive without being suffocating. Definitely a restaurant we will keep in rotation when we go out to eat.

Yelp
I ordered the lamb and chicken special, samosas with tzatziki dipping sauce, the full salad as a side with pita bread and for dessert it was walnut baklava. I enjoyed the samosa the most probably. I should've asked for no rice as I did not eat it but ate the pita bread and veggies. The main entree of the lamb and chicken special did not have enough flavor or spices as I expected more and there was more rice than meat. If there was lamb I could barely taste it or there was none at all as I did not get that wonderful gaminess that lamb has. The samosas were a vegan filling that was okay and almost not seasoned enough but the crispy phyllo dough was its saving grace. The samosas came with a tzatziki sauce that was definitely tart and added flavor to the samosas. The veggies of cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, etc. in the side salad appeared to be pickled and provided some acidity to everything. Dessert was the baklava which was the size of a ring jewelry box. It was buttery, not too sweet, drizzled with some honey and the layers of crispy phyllo dough was good. I did expect it to be a bigger size especially based on the photo but it was only $3.85 so I guess that tiny bite corresponds to the low price. Overall I would like to go in and eat here and see the difference. I am a firm believer that eating at the restaurant versus delivery is well hands down dining at the establishment is going to better. The flavors almost fell flat in my opinion. I have had better versions of everything which is what is influencing my review. The food wasn't bad, but I have had better. The meat I was most disappointed in and I don't think I got any lamb at all. I know what lamb tastes like and there was no hint of it. I would give it a 3.5/5 but they don't have that option so it's rounded up to a 4. And I think eating in would make a big difference possibly. The flavors almost fell flat in my opinion. I have had better versions of everything which is what is influencing my review. The food wasn't bad, it just did not meet my expectations as I was told it was good and it is, but I have had better. Yelp
It has been a few years since we were here and I don't know why we waited so long to come back. The food is wonderful! The service was also top notch. The flavors are like a bouquet in your mouth!! I love the seasonings. The Saniha and Shawarma were both great dishes. The flavor of the chicken in the Shawarma is sooo good! Large portions too! I'd post pictures but we started eating before I could!

Yelp
In a single word: NO. Items ordered Samosa appetizer, Garlic Chicken & Lamb Shawarma Sandwich. Samosa: Appears to be purchased frozen and simply deep fried in house. They were flavorless, oily and very doughy inside. The tzatziki sauce didn't taste very good either. Garlic Chicken: The chicken was fatty, the rice tasted as if it was made yesterday since it was exceptionally dry and had zero flavor for being billed as seasoned rice. The salad that came with it tasted like wet lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes with a hint of lemon. Lamb Shawarma: Very little lamb, flavorless. My husband and I left 1/2 the meals on the plate and left. The service is okay, but there was just one server there. The meals seemed to have little to no flavor, salt or spices as described in the menu. As I understand, the restaurant has new owners and the meals are simply HORRID. So after "eating" at this restaurant, my husband and I were forced to immediately patronize Burger King which seemed like 5 star dining compared to Jerusalem Cafe. Do yourselves a favor people and choose fast food instead of this over priced nothingness.

Yelp
I just ordered the food off of door dash, I got the falafel sandwich, garlic fries and some sort of hummus it is absolutely amazing I would definitely come here again and recommend it to anybody if you like Greek food this is amazing

Yelp
Friendly service, but light on portions. $15 for 2oz of meat, 1/4 cup of rice and some onion. Crazy heavy seasoned, so much I had to wash each bite down.

Yelp
We needed delivery at 9:00 on a Sunday night in Vancouver. Imagine how happy I was to find out that the Jerusalem Cafe was open. I ordered a ton of food. My favorite thing they have there is the falafel. Their's is so light and fluffy. I ordered the hummus with lamb meat for my BF and it came with a full salad. That is actually a plate with 5 or 6 different house made salads. The food is fantastic and really a great value for what you get even with delivery fees and tips. Oh and the garlic fries went into the air fryer when they got here. The smell was so amazing that it drew the roommate out to see what we had that smelled so good. They were very tasty
google avatar

Amani R.

Yelp
It shouldn't be called Jerusalem shawarma. From a person from Jerusalem it has no comparison to Jerusalem shawarma. Everything tasted good but I felt I was eating a chicken burrito with taboola. A no no. Taboola is not put into a shawarma sandwich. Arabic Jerusalem salad with pickles, onions and tahini sauce. Bring ppl who know how to cook the food. The food tasted good but the title of the food has no comparison. The chicken was cooked Latino style. Not middle eastern. Smh. Definitely not coming back here.

Luke S.

Yelp
This restaurant must be on life support and trying to cut costs to stay in business. Just paid $40 for two entrees and it looks nothing like the picture. The chicken shwarma is dry, cut into small pieces and lacking any spice or flavor. Two boxes of dry old meat on the top of $.25 worth of rice.

Yelp
Ordered the gyro for dinner for my mom and I last night absolutely delicious best one I have ever had I will most definitely be going back

Yelp
Fresh, plentiful, delicious food with several vegan and vegetarian options. Service staff is great. Prices are totally reasonable too.

Yelp
My food is raw last time I ordered food from this place they only sent me the rice smh. I don't recommend this restaurant at all. It's over priced raw and under cooked food 0 stars
google avatar

Savannah R.

Yelp
What happened here? I feel like this place used to be so good, literally bursting with flavor, but my order tonight was NOT it. I ordered their fish special, which in their picture shows a fairly large piece of crispy fish. The fish was not crispy in the slightest, overcooked, and tasted old. The house salads lacked any flavor and were bordering inedible. Pita looked like it was straight out of the package, and stale. Dolma also looked like it was from a can, something I'm not against, but not what I expected when ordering from a restaurant. Rice was also stale and flavorless. I really hope I just ordered on an off night , but if you're looking for something flavorful and satisfying, might want to go somewhere else.

Yelp
Dont not eat here seriously I regret it so much. They used to be amazing but something changed and now it's awful! The vegan falafel sandwich tasted like it had cleaner inside like a soap. And then the fries or the grape leaves gave me food poisoning and made me throw up! I never do this with food ever do not eat here!!!
google avatar

Hank C.

Yelp
Never again. Took an hour and a half for fries, gyro and pita/hummus. Used to be good ages ago but it's now a total sh*t show.

Yelp
Jerusalem cafe is one if not my favorite to go Mediterranean! Their chicken schwarma and house spice fries are absolutely the best and super authentic! They are really fast and great portions! I 100 recommend

Kat G.

Yelp
The service is rude! The person who took our order had no idea about food allergies. I asked which foods contain dairy and he eats 'uhh I'm pretty sure it all does'(seriously go and ask the cooks if you don't know!) I had to ask for the packaging to see for myself. We asked him to turn up the heat as it was really cold and said he wasn't allowed to touch the thermostat (seriously?) Then when we were leaving we heard someone from the back say in Spanish 'if you're cold wear a sweater' we were wearing sweaters, and you should care about the comfort of your customers. The food wasn't very good which seems to be a theme around Vancouver as far as Middle Eastern food goes. I'm pretty sure everyone who works here is Hispanic so go figure the food didn't taste authentic. The hummus was drowned in lemon. If you're looking for authentic middle eastern food, cross the bridge into Portland and try Habibi. It is delicious! I will not be returning to Jerusalem Cafe.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
Easily my favorite Mediterranean place, outside of a restaurant I visited in Tel Aviv, whose name I can't remember. The owner, Anton, treats you more like a friend than a customer. Try the Saniha, it's the best dish on the menu!

Angie C.

Yelp
We received one triangle of pita with the dishes we ordered that require pita. We ordered 2 extra portions which ended up being literally 2 more triangles. No sauce with the falafel which were obviously brought in frozen because they are tiny little balls about 1.5 inches. LAUGHABLE! The falafels are overdone. They MICROWAVED the pita to warm it up and it's getting tougher by the second. How do you fail this bad at middle eastern foods? We had to pour the excess water off the hummus before using our 2 pieces of pita to try to eat it all.

Yelp
Me and my family are so grateful for Jerusalem Cafe. We can't even begin to express how much we enjoy every aspect and interaction we have with the restaurant. All good memories. It's just the best! The food is beyond amazing, super healthy, and tastes fantastic. My favorite meal of all time is the 'Chicken on Fire'. They also have authentic baklava, that's a must. We absolutely applaud the staff who makes Jerusalem Cafe happen! The service is selfless, and puts you first. We always have great meaningful conversations with the staff. The music is one of best parts as well, we love it. This is a great location if your looking to impress a date, as well. Jerusalem Cafe is hands down my family's favorite restaurant! We thank you, so much for what you do! You bring us lots of joy, and happiness.

Barbecue C.

Yelp
Rough. The beef skewers appear to have been used as heat shields on the bottom of the space shuttle. Hummus was runny, and the rice bland, but the babaganoush and pita were both palatable.

Liliya A.

Yelp
The meal was awful. I order beef and lamb kebabs with seasoned rice. The kebabs ARE MICROWAVED! And the rice is raw! It was horrible. No wonder the place was completely empty on Friday night.

Yelp
My girlfriend was really craving some Middle Eastern food last night and it was getting late so many of the ones in Portland that we go to were closing so I decided to come here where I had lunch at many times when I worked in Vancouver. The food was always great then, but not tonight. The meat was dried out (jerky is moister)! The rice was dry and stale. The samosas were very oily. The service was also lackluster at best, it's almost as if it were a problem that we were even there, we were the only people in the place. We witnessed the server also snap at a delivery driver that was there to pick up an order. While we were still eating, the sever brought over the payment machine and stood there rudely waiting for me to pay. At this point we paid and left promptly. We won't be back.

A favorite of mine. I came into town and made sure to enjoy an excellent Mediterranean meal here. This restaurant was started a while back by Arab Christians who migrated from Israel and made SW Washington their home. A wonderful family who brought a unique perspective of the Middle East with them. And their savory blends of the old-world are delightful.
