I should preface my review by saying that when it comes to pizza, I suppose I fit the "traditionalist" definition. I grew up in a Sicilian family and my grandmother made homemade pizza on the reg. Also, having spent my childhood and teen years in Western Pennsylvania just outside of Pittsburgh, there was no shortage of excellent pizza and Italian food to be found. While I'm not opposed to trying different takes on the pie, I find myself always returning to classic Neapolitan for my pizza fix.
So, I did react with a degree of (hopefully) good natured skepticism when a friend of mine who grew up in Detroit went into a state of near ecstasy upon learning that long standing Detroit pizza institution Jet's was opening a location close by. Detroit pizza is a bit of a amped up take on rectangular/square deep dish Sicilian style which can be hit or miss for me. At times, the crust can be too spongy and the grease factor can be high as well.
Well, I've had Jet's twice and I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed!
Both times, I ordered the 8 corner with bold/cupped pepperoni. I was advised that choosing the multi-topping options can negatively affect the crust as the toppings melt through and add too much moisture, taking away some of the crunch of the crust.
So, the crust is really fantastic...just the right amount of crunch and chewy quality, and a minimum of grease. The sauce is an excellent melding of tart and sweet...it does veer toward being just a slight touch sweeter than I normally go for, but the offsetting tartness provided a rich complexity. The pepperoni was spicy and not overly salty which is a big plus, and just the right amount of Mozzarella was used. This is a very substantial pizza, and reheats extremely well.
It's not going to replace my favorite Neapolitan places, but for a change of pace it's a winner. The place was super busy when I went to pick it up and staff seemed a touch harried, but they were handling the requests well.
