Kroger-Albertsons May Sell Mariano’s Name to Piggly Wiggly’s Owners | Eater Chicago

"A long-established grocery chain dating back to 1899, this grocer is among the locations implicated in the proposed Kroger–Albertsons merger and the resulting divestiture plan. Four of its stores were included in the 579-store sale to C&S Wholesale Grocers as regulators pressed for remedies to antitrust concerns; one of those is a South Side location at 87 W. 87th Street. C&S has pledged to keep the stores open and honor union agreements for the listed locations so frontline workers would retain their jobs, but it remains unclear how the listed Chicago store will be renamed if the deal is approved amid ongoing regulatory and labor opposition." - Ashok Selvam

Google
I had such horrible customer service today from the location and it’s unfortunate because I shop here nearly everyday sometimes twice a day because I work right across the street. Today I came in to purchase a sandwich and some other items but the sandwich was supposed to be free because I was using some of my rewards. I get to the register and the sandwich didn’t come off. I clipped and it was the correct item but for some reason it didn’t come off my total. The cashier got a manager involved. I don’t remember her name but she is a black woman with long hair and long nails. She attempted to help but made a comments as if I didn’t clip the item correctly but like I previously stated I shop there daily. I know how to correctly clip my coupons and rewards. She then had another manager attempt to try and help me but she couldn’t figure out why it didn’t come off either but proceeded to tell me I should call the number on the bottom of my receipt to find out why. 1 cashier and 2 managers later and no resolution, over a $6 sandwich that they clearly saw in my phone I earned through my rewards. That is not how you take care of your customers. And I did call the number and the representative told me it was just a glitch in the system. Very disappointed in the management team at this location. I will end on a positive note and that there are some great cashiers and the young lady that does the price changes is always sweet and smiling with great customer service and Tim in the deli has great customer service as well.

Stoped in today Sunday 10-19-2025 11:45am to get some quick groceries. had to be at least 30 Customers waiting in line. Self check on machines down Only three registers Open and two self check out what’s going on in this jewel he used to be good. Customer service desk needs to help their employees. Finally left the store 20 minutes for one item

Google
Baddies on patrol, and I mean total baddies! Huge pro. Now for the cons - literally negative urgency from the clerks, be prepared to camp in line. They sell 7 up cakes too!

Jewel 87th was nice. Peggie is a rockstar. The store was clean, shelves were fully stocked and the staff was filling the shelves with more items. Produce department was beautiful with lots of fresh vegetables. I love, love the black History month decoration, also the Valentine’s Day flowers and balloons. Thanks Jewel

Google
See most recent review ******* Avoid this Jewel at all cost. The (older) women that are horrible. I have seen them verbally and physically assault people and curse people. I have seen and been victim of bad customer service. The women that work here seem to be upset at the world. Avoid this Jewel, I have seen this before. There will be problems here. If there has not already been, I would be surprised. ******* See most recent review

Google
I was impressed with this chain store. Publix is top tier and I put jewel osco up there. I'm sure not all locations are the same. Thankfully the couple locations I visited were on point.

Google
I went to buy this item however they were out so I decided on sliced smoked turkey from deli and what did I do that for! EVERYONE behind the deli counter had an attitude! However the cashier (Key) was really nice thanks.

Yelp
This store in "underrated" in my view. The store is clean, the food well-stocked and on par with all area competitors and I have found the assistants in the self-checkout lanes to consistently be friendly and helpful.

Yelp
BATHROOMS ARE DIGUSTING!!!!!! no toilet paper, no soap, no paper towels, all the toilets are clogged, theres shit stains and piss on the ground. fucking nasty.

Yelp
If you can help it, DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS STORE. Customer service is terrible! And apparently their dress code isn't enforced - dirty polos, guys walking around with their pants hanging off their asses. Their self serve checkout registers are ALWAYS down. And that's only because their more worried about folks stealing than they are about providing good customer service. This has to be the most low-vibration, ghetto supermarket in Chicago.

Yelp
Let me start by I haven't shopped here in awhile because of the new Pete's in Evergreen but this required a review. ZERO STARS Deli section had old uncooked chicken and the supposedly fresh grilled chicken was a 2 hour wait. Don't understand the time frame but anyway that's not the real issue it's the lack of customer service. The young lady who was expected to assist me started talking to me then mid sentence went to talk to a coworker not give me one minute let me help them but just walked off like we weren't even talking. Then turned around and called several numbers really fast. I said wait you never finished my number. She could only look at me as if she was confused and I gave her the same look. Then she said we can't talk anymore orders. Really as myself and 5 other people walked out of the store to go to Pete's on Kedzie I thought this is my last time coming here for sure. Never again.

Yelp
Did curbside pickup today this morningAnd it was the second worst experienceFrom a jewels that I ever had to endure!!! The young lady who should be fired immediately comes out with my groceries and leaves the cart there refusing to put my items in my trunk and begins intentionally walking away!!! I politely said excuse aren't you supposed to put my groceries in my trunk she says no I don't have to im not required to So when I then say let me call the store manager ans she smart mouthly says They ain't going to do nothing what are they going to do but she then changes her mind and placed my groceries in the car .....Like WHAT THE HELL!!! Wont be spending my hard earned money here again #Highly Pissed

Yelp
Don't shop before 8am. No lines open. Grandma has 50 items and several price checks. 20 minute check out.l- two days in a row. It's a pattern. They have no self check open early. It's not the employees fault. Poor mgmt. most jewel stores have poor mgmt. north. South. Poor. I bought a muffin. It took 31 minutes. No one asked or checked them in. Good store. Bad mgmt. after 8am it's quick. Before work---- it's not the place to go and be at work on time.

Yelp
This Jewels is ok but I think it could be better and I don't know if it is due to the community that it is but it nothing like the ones on the North Side of Chicago and that saddens me. It has always been clean when I shop here and like any place you run into a knucklehead or two but for the most part this location has some great employees. My only real issue is there selection is not as large as some of the other Jewels on the North Side. This is not the employees fault but whoever sees over the layout and the buying needs for the location. Hey don't get me wrong I haven't seen any Chitterlings at the Jewels I go to on the other side of town but there are some great cooks within this community as well and if they want to compete with these other grocery stores like Whole Foods and Marianos they may want to research it...but hey that's just me. Other than that when Im in area I would come here and shop because they have great employees and it is always clean. As always folks... Enjoy!!!

Yelp
This is only a brief review, it is a grocery store, not a five star restaurant. It was well stocked and clean, the lines were rather long even though they have so many lines that could be open. This is the best option for a full size/service grocery store on the south side.
google avatar

Yelp
The worst grocery store and very expensive. I feel that because it's on the south side of Chicago they do not maintain it like other Jewel grocery store brands. Items in the meat/seafood department are always missing. Their shelves are dirty and disorganized. I only use it now as a convenience store. Mariano's does a far better job with the same price point. See pictures.

Yelp
The prices on most items have gone down due to the new Walmart Super Center 4 blocks away. Meats are always overpriced, good selection of liquor if you need a fast grab for a party. Self check-out lanes makes getting in and out quickly a breeze..

Yelp
This Jewel Osco is pretty good . They have a pretty good selection most times . The prices are some good some meh . The staff is pretty nice as well .

Yelp
Been shopping here for more twenty years. Jewel has raised their prices to a ridiculous level. Meats are second- hand. Fruits and vegetables are a little better in quality. Service is terrible. Too many inexperienced teenagers working there. Jewel's is I. Competition with the two other food chains in the area and it's pathetic that they do not have a decent sale on food items. Ans that game that they have to earn points toward purchasing appliances is a joke.

Yelp
I have visited the store and called the Store Director five times within two weeks trying to speak with her in regards to support for a school fundraiser taking place at the end of the month. Each time I call, either no one answers, she isn't available, she's on another call or just stepped out and I have yet to receive a call back. In regards to the fundraiser, the school is looking for a donation of a food item but we are also looking to purchase in hopes that the store donation would at least match our purchase. Unfortunately, I cannot even get that far in explanation because I can never get in contact with someone willing to help or hear me out. I've had several less than pleasant encounters at this store personally but I've never made a big deal, however, in this case, I am looking for support for a school so I couldn't keep quiet with this one!!! I am beyond disappointed and will NOT support this store any longer. I'll be contacting the corporate office next providing all details related to this issue. I wish this store the best and hope things improve in the future.

Yelp
I was there were a way I could give less than one star this location consistently does not have enough product . today is Mother's Day about 4:30 PM and they have no chicken wings!! every time I come to the store they are missing a major component of grocery shopping it looks as though the shelves of been pillaged. I blame the management of this store. as black people we spend a lot of money in the store , but we never have what we need until we start reporting it to corporate is going to continue. NO STARS!!!!
google avatar

Worlee G.

Yelp
I was rudely told that the store did not Internet coupons by both a manager and cashier. The so called manager stated "Jewel stores in the African American community do not take Internet coupons". After I wrote corporate and told them that I was taking my business to Walmart and about the comment the general manager of the store called me apologizing. Then she insulted my intelligence by calling me back 3 minutes later and stating "corporate" stated that one coupon in question was invalid. She didn't know the policy and that is why the employees state they do not take Internet coupons. Jewel is losing a long time customer over this.

Yelp
Looks like a resurgence of good business and crowds... Other grocery stores in the area are falling off... Glad to see

Bernadine G.

Yelp
I like this Jewel is far better than the one on Stoney Island and five times better than Walmart. Walmart meat is overpriced most sale items are rarely restocked on shelves, you have to go down aisles that are blocked with boxes and workers talking instead of doing there jobs. They never have enough lines open the self checkout counter has not been cleaned in months. Compared to other stores in black areas of town this one is far better. One draw back is early in the morning the only lines open are 20 items or less which can get busy after 8:00 a.m.

Yelp
Not the best grocery store, nor is it ever my first choice. I only go because it is down the street for those time I need to grab something quickly that I am missing.

Shirley A.

Yelp
I would like to thank Darius Long for being such a loyal Jewel supporter, I only wish felt the same way about the customers. The customers by the way look just like him. We are getting tired of being treated like second class citizens while you take our money. I rarely go to that Jewel even though it is about five minutes away because of customer service. He is new, but certainly not an asset.

Shelia J.

Yelp
I hate, hate, hate this store. Lines are long, the self-service counters are never open, the staff has attitudes, the parking lot is filthy and the produce is rotten. I live very near by but drive downtown for much better selections and excellent customer service. Too bad but I will never, ever shop here.

Eli W.

Yelp
Under the new management the store has made a complete turn around. The pedaling in the parking lot is gone and customer service is up. The prices are in line with Walmart and Food for Less
