Mariano’s Agrees to Buy Jewel-Osco and Create Grocery Super Chain - Eater Chicago

"Meanwhile, Jewel — or more properly known by Chicago natives as “the Jewels” — has been around since 1899. It would acquire Osco Drugs in the 1960s, adding a pharmacy to many stores. CVS bought Osco’s standalone locations in 2007 and converted them into its brand. The Osco name lived on as in-store pharmacies at select Jewel locations. Jewel’s parent, Albertsons, which took over the company in 1999, has 2,200 stores across the U.S. with names including Safeway and Tom Thumb. In recent years, both have expanded their prepared food selections with Jewel creating some buzz with its fried chicken, marketing a special called “Cheep Chicken Monday.”" - Ashok Selvam

First time visiting a jewel grocery store this weekend… Definitely won’t be the last. We bought the most amazing brownie with a chocolate chip cookie layer on top at the bakery… Warmed it up in a microwave and OMG. So delicious! Also, Amazing deals, across-the-board!

I love their cookie cakes! This store has a lot of options. They have beer, hard liquor, bakery, sushi, fried chicken, produce, and meat. They sell gift cards, I- pass, and bus passes. They also sell lottery tickets, Red Box movies, and a key copy machine. They also sell bags of ice and Chicago souvenirs.

Fantastic grocery store in a perfect location! Very helpful to be able to shop for healthy groceries while staying in Chicago. I needed fresh berries for my morning protein shake. Plus, they have an impressive beer and wine selection.

Let me start by saying… Jewel-Osco at 550 N State St is THAT store. 💎🛒✨ The location is perfect, nestled right in the heart of River North like a beautiful gem waiting to be discovered. From the second you walk in, it’s clean, bright, and organized like a dream supermarket should be. This is not your average grocery store. This is the luxury suite of produce, snacks, and vibes. 🏙️💼 The produce section? IMMACULATE. 🍎🍌🥬 Everything is fresh, crisp, and lined up like a food commercial. I’m talking deep green kale, perfectly round oranges, and avocados that don’t play. Not one rotten banana in sight. Jewel-Osco must have a fruit whisperer in the back because these melons are always perfectly ripe. 💚🍉 The bakery section alone deserves its own shrine. 🥐🎂🍞 Fresh bread with that soft interior and crunchy crust, muffins that are thicc with flavor, and the cookies? Literal heaven. You smell warm sugar and love the second you hit the aisle. 10/10 every single time. My cheat day starts and ends right here. 🍪🔥 Now the deli counter? PURE excellence. 🍖🧀 Sliced meats cut to your exact liking, cheeses galore, and staff who actually know what they’re talking about. You can tell they put care into every order. The potato wedges? UNREAL. That’s not deli food, that’s comfort food magic. 💯 Customer service? Don’t even get me started. 🛎️😁 Every single person who works here is kind, attentive, and fast. You ask for help, they walk you over. They don’t just point. They smile. They’re chill. They know where everything is. Real MVPs. 💪🙌 Shoutout to the crew that keeps this place running like a tight ship! The checkout experience is elite. 💳🚀 Whether it’s a cashier lane or self-checkout, it’s smooth and fast. There’s always someone nearby to help. And they don’t look at you like you’re bothering them—they’re genuinely helpful. That’s rare these days. 😇📦 The hot food area is criminally underrated. 🍗🔥 From rotisserie chicken to mac & cheese that melts your soul, it’s like they hired someone’s grandma and gave her a commercial kitchen. The food is warm, fresh, and way better than you’d expect from a grocery store. This ain’t no gas station meal. 😤 The selection of international items? 🔥🌍💯 Absolutely insane. You’ll find Asian sauces, Latin American snacks, Mediterranean spices—all in one place. They cater to EVERY taste and culture. It’s giving global food tour without leaving the block. 🌐🥢🫒 And the parking situation? GOLDEN. 🚗💎 In Chicago, finding decent parking is like catching a unicorn. But this location? Underground garage. Clean. Secure. Safe. First hour FREE with validation. What more could you ask for? 😮‍💨🎟️💯 Jewel-Osco at 550 N State St isn’t just a grocery store—it’s a cornerstone of the neighborhood. A one-stop, premium-quality experience with friendly faces, endless options, and pure positive vibes. 💫🛒❤️ Every trip here feels like a win. I’d give 10 stars if I could.

Google
First time going to this mini Jewel. They have a good selection of everything you'd need. Especially the frozen pizza section! The prices aren't bad either. The lines for both self-checkout and regular checkout were a little wild, but all in all, good experience!

Google
Manager here doesn't even know how their own coupon system works. I've used enough of their coupons i know how the system works and she tried arguing me. I just left without buying anything. Not worth my time or my money. Also their sale cart will have items in it that won't ring up as on sale so when you tell someone they just shrug. I tell them that someone should take the many other same items out then and came back a couple days later still full of them. They are trying to scam people and hope they don't double check their receipt.

Google
A great grocery store where you can find all kinds of meat, dairy products, vegetables, fresh canned fruits, a huge selection of sweet desserts, cookies and candies, there is also a corner where fresh food of many types is prepared, which one can choose from and take home in perfect packaging, a large part of the store is dedicated to spirits, a huge selection of wines from all over the world, as well as various other concentrates from all over the world, there are both standard and self-service checkouts, which makes it very easy and makes the store really extremely innovative, a huge number of stands with a variety of spices from all over the world, as well as all kinds of foods that are packaged things for cooking, a large meat corner where you can make a big choice, really something unique that would satisfy even the most sophisticated taste.

Google
Worst Jewel in the city. Constantly miss-priced items at check-out. Deli always closes early. Workers seem to hate their lives or just don't care. Month old shredded cheese sitting in the fridge section. Terribly managed store. Final straw is that they sold us spoiled, barely cleaned fish. Never going back.

Yelp
This is my go-to Jewel-Osco for standard groceries and a store with plenty of options. Living in the downtown River North area, it's incredibly convenient to have a Jewel in such a central location, especially since grocery options can be limited around here. The store itself is spacious for a downtown location, offering a wide variety of products, and it's generally clean and well-maintained. I also appreciate that they stay open until midnight, which makes late-night grocery runs super convenient. The large self-checkout area is a big plus, too--it's great that you can check out even with a full cart quickly and efficiently. Overall, this is a good Jewel-Osco location for anyone living downtown!

Yelp
Didn't really care for this Jewel-Osco. Found the selection limited compared to a full-size location that I visited north of the city later in the day. I was looking for some Chicago food items, but was unable to find any of them here so had to go to another location. I do think that this location in the heart of Chicago seems convenient as a lunchtime spot for those working nearby, as well as for residents living in the area. It seems to have the essentials, but I would look elsewhere if you are looking for specialty food items.

Yelp
Nice grocery! Looks like part of Albertsons/Safeway family; took my Safeway #. Large selection to choose from. Most importantly, they have S Rosen Mary Ann Poppy Seed hot dog buns, a must for Chicago dogs! Also Donkey tortilla chips! Can't find them in Seattle!

Yelp
A grocery chain in Chicago. This was one of the cleaner ones that we've stopped in. I was looking for a specific type of cookie to take to a friend in CT who was originally from Chicago. They had them in two sizes!! The Salerno Butter Cookies. We found the product easily. They had a parking lot did the store and parking was easy which is not always the case in Chicago.

Yelp
We saw a handful of Jewel-Osco stores on the drive between ORD & our hotel. I was unfamiliar with the Chicagoland grocery chain, but curiosity plus needing a few non-food related odds & ends led me to meander the busy aisles of this location. Thank you to the helpful employee who scoured the tech-related sections to locate the items I needed. Long lines, a little chaotic. Side note: when i returned home after my trip, I watched one of my favorite Chicago-based YouTubers sing the praises of Snickers cookies from -- you guessed it -- Jewels! I wish I would've seen the video earlier!

Yelp
Do NOT buy Seafood here!! Shopped here 7/1/24 and the shrimp was not only spoiled, but when I called to complain about it, there was no feedback. Nothing nobody cared. This is the worst Jewel in the world. Don't try calling their joke Customer Service and Do Not try to return to the store again nobody cares!!! I wonder if you end up in the ER with food poisoning then maybe somebody would listen?? Avoid all Cost if I could've give zero stars I would!! Disgusting store disgusting seafood disgusting service

Yelp
Store closes over 2 hours early every day. Why's it listed as 12:00 close if every door is locked by 10:30pm

Ryan V.

Yelp
I came at 11:35 and they said they were closed. Absolute drop of the bar as far as service went. I promise I won't visit a jewel ever again

Yelp
Worst customer service ever!!! This is for the store on 550 N. State Street in Chicago I live in the area and visit the store often. A few months ago they hired a new, young manager with serious anger management issues. I happened to speak with her a couple of times to ask for a rain check. She would look at me with eyes full of rage, saying nothing, disappearing, then coming back and saying: "We have the [item]!(in this case "organic romain lettice hearts")" I would say: "Great! Would you please show me where is it?" Without saying anything, she would start walking quickly towards the area of the item. I would follow her and she would show me a different brand of the product. Pretty much wasting my time. I usually walk away, because she appears so angry that I am afraid she could harm me physically. Last time I told her I will have to call customer service and complain. She said: "Go ahead! You are not the first one that would call customer service to complain of me!"

Yelp
Big thanks to Nykaleh for helping me out last night. I had a price discrepancy that I needed adjusted, and she helped me out right away. She also got me signed up for the rewards program, and I even got discounts on some of my other items. Amazing customer service! Thanks Nykaleh!

Yelp
Really fantastic customer service lately by team members! I came in to get some fresh dill for a homemade dill dip that I was in the process of making,,,,, Jesse in the Produce Department told me that for some reason they had not received their "usual" shipments of fresh dill herbs...I looked at the small organic Meyer's Farm Packages but there was no dill available. He immediately located and restocked it! Super professional and helpful. Also Caleb W. at checkout was professional, fast, efficient, and kind as well. Lately I have noticed the staff in the self-check out area are super attentive to all customers.... Thank you!

Yelp
I had a disappointing visit to customer service at jewel at 550 N. State St. today. I shop at jewel 3 times a week and in the past have had decent service. Today I went to return a Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetner with erythritol after I started getting chest pains. I looked it up online and it said the erythritol has been linked with increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The receipt in my bag was not actually the receipt that showed I purchased that particular item. The woman behind the counter told me that I needed the actual receipt even for a store credit. She called the manager on the phone. She then hung up and started playing with the cash register back there so I thought everything was fine. She came back again and said I needed the receipt to get a store credit and just walked away. Wow...

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. I am an insta cart shopper and unfortunately was not aware of the 1hr valid time for the parking garage. To make things clear the garage is not attached to jewel so I had to walk and go up the elevator and go to my car to place groceries all with 2 hands for 2 orders. While instacart did not make this aware, I know I am responsible for the parking. As I am exiting I scan the ticket which was only 7 min off from the 1hr charging me $45! How is it possible that I am working yet having to pay for parking for so little time. I understand the valid time was only an hour so the garage lady asked me to go speak to manager at Jewel because they had already allowed another shopper to leave with the same issue. As I go speak to the supposed "manager" I asked her if there is anything they can do and she started talking to me with a condescending tone!! IN FRONT OF EVERYONE! I understand that she was not able to do anything at that point but speaking to me like that in front of everyone was just unacceptable. There is an appropriate tone and manner to handle things. How do they let this young lady be a manager? I talked to the assistant manager which was more understanding and had a calm tone. I have never experienced anything like that and is unthinkable how upper management speaks to a customer like that. Shouting across all lanes as other customers look at her and not me because I wasn't the one yelling! She should be fired because of her horrible anger issues.

Yelp
Man I never thought I would go into a Jewel store and have a great experience. As always whenever I have to go into a Jewels (as we like to call it in my family), I am in fight mode because there is just something about the stores that make me mad, whether it is the service, the physical space, lack of product or service. Because this was a downtown store, fight mode was not only activated but turned up to 11 as I had no idea what to expect. Well I was able to dial back the knob to a 7 when I walked in the door and saw the liquor section staring at me. I needed bubbles for our staycation and there they were, waiting for me. The prices were what I would expect for downtown, so I was good with that. The physical store is tight, but since it was downtown, I expected that as well based on the store being located in a building and with real estate being pricey. I did not see anyone walking around without a mask on, so that was good. But what I have never experienced in the history of all Jewels visit was a store employee who not only ushered me to a self check out station, but checked me out and bagged my stuff! Whaaaaaaat??? I will tell you Yelp readers, I was very confused on the inside, but cool on the outside. I have never had anyone at any store with self check out actually scan my stuff and bag it. I think if I had given the woman my credit card, she would have scanned that in for me as well. I still don't believe it happened and I was there. I have a theory that I stepped through a rift in the time space continuum and went into a parallel universe where the Jewels still have small spaces but the customer service is epic. If this is how this Jewels rolls, I may have to start shopping here all the time. It is in a building next to parking and Spot Hero has great deals for parking, so this could work.

Yelp
I couldn't believe there was this huge grocery store across the street from my hotel. I went in and it's huge had everything we needed.

Yelp
Someone stole my OS. It wasn't Windows, or Linux even. It was called "Jewel". So if nobody stole it, then where the f*** did my Jewel OS Go? This is a pretty expensive little neighbourhood Grocery Store that is way way way smaller than most Jewel-Osco stores and it's located right on the corner in a busy part of Chicago that does not have any good parking options whatsoever unless you get really lucky, like I did when I found my gf. However I needed a freezer bag and they did have those as you can see by the picture - so if you need a specific something there's a good chance they'll have it - it just might be hard to find - so when you come in here just ask them if they have it and you'll find out.

Yelp
I come to this Jewel all the time whenever I'm in the area to go get my nails done or if I'm at my job's office which is across the street from here. They're smaller than the traditional Jewel Osco. They don't have a pharmacy here. But they do have the basic necessities. I always come here for a bottle of water or a quick snack. The checkout lanes are always busy though, whether it's self checkout or with an associate. The self checkout lanes would have all the registers open, but all are occupied and it'd be customers with a full cart. I'd like to see a register or two for 10 items or less at the self checkout section for people like me who have like 2 items. I also try to be quick and have my payment method ready to go. Other than that, it gets the job done when you need something from the neighborhood grocery store. They also have a hot bar and deli for meals, and they make it fresh daily. They also have a pastry section with muffins, donuts etc. It's conveniently near the Grand Red line station, several bus routes pass by at the intersection of Grand and State St. People don't usually drive here since it's walkable and accessible by public transportation, and there's also no parking outside. Sometimes a taxi or Uber/Lyft will have their hazards on briefly. I do recommend this store if you're here for the basic necessities, and be mindful of the long checkout times if you're pressed for time.

Yelp
Everyone is very friendly there and when we go there everyone knows us by our name since we are a frequent shopper there. the sale person was very helpful in produce and very friendly and helpful! Organized and clean and have some good deals and nice little reward system with the jewel perks. Their produce is always fresh and lasts a long time and they carry a good selection of organic foods. The prices are way less expensive than other stores for the same exact items, so comparison shopping is always a good idea. When needing help to find a product the young man stocking the bake goods went out of his way to make sure I found what I needed. Good produce and selection of products!

Yelp
Are these not perfect fall flowers! My go to when I need to pick up flowers fast for the home... how cute are the cinnamon pumpkins!

Yelp
A surprisingly good selection of items given the size of the store, really nice staff.

Yelp
River North shopping! This Jewel Osco isn't necessarily the crown jewel of Chicago. It's conveniently located right next to a bunch of hotels, and the red line of CTA. It's not exactly a full, full grocery store. But it does have a beer selection with a limited selection of drinks cold, including a few local beers. This store also sell souvenirs for the Chicago trip to take home with you. Magnets, postcards, and stickers! I was a bit annoyed to see their selection of hot Giardinera sauce. It's a Chicago favorite. I searched and searched for it- looked in the area with the sauces and tapenades and spreads- I found two off brands, but not the most famous brand in Chicago! Then, went over to the hot dog selection, and found the Vienna Hot Giardinera sauce on its own! Why split up the selection!? Put them all in one spot! Derp. The clerks here were nice and efficient. They were having what I'd consider to be inappropriate conversations between the employees talking trash about the managers and the customers and everyone hanging around outside the doors. There's a lot of homeless that hang out in front of this place asking for twenty cents or a nickle or something. If you're in a pinch, this is a decent option to get some supplies if you're down here. There's better options for nearly everything in this store across the city, but it's all about the convenience at this location. It's a bit dirty. The prices are high.

Yelp
Kudos to the man with the braids stocking the shelves on 10/7/22 around 7pm! A friendly and proactive grocery store employee? Who would have thought! He greeted everyone walking down his aisle and offered everyone help if the needed it. So unheard of, so appreciated! Employee of the month, nay, the year goes to him! He should be a manager--maybe he is!

Crystal C.

Yelp
Unprofessional! The lady with the red and black locs behind the hot food section should NOT work a customer service job. She did not greet us , ask what we wanted or acknowledge our presence. She literally just stared at us with an attitude as if asking for 6 chicken wings was a damper in her day. Lady it's your job! If you can't say a simple "how may I help you" or "Thank you" than customer service is not the job for you stink.
google avatar

Yelp
Every visit to this particular Jewel-Osco has welcoming. Everyone is busy stocking shelves, attending to customers, and keeping the place organized and clean. This location is fantastic very clean the staff are very friendly very helpful, the deli that's fantastic the meat quality of the food is top-notch if you want the best of the best come here. This Jewel-Osco has a bar! So before you go grocery shopping you can also get a drink beforehand. Sometimes they have promotional parties to let customers try new food samples. It's a fancier Jewel-Osco with a nice parking lot. We like it but it isn't our local Jewels Osco so we don't come here too often. The store exceeded my expectations I do all my shopping here I insist on going to Jewel their prices are very good if not the best their food it's the best there dairy their fruit everything is great five stars for everything I love this.
google avatar

Elliott F.

Yelp
Very convenient: it's in my building. But also very frustrating. The fried chicken is justifiably rated as some of the best in the city. The grilled chicken is also superb. But, think olive oil cooking spray is in the same aisle as olive oil? Think again. Even the gefilte fish (yeah, I know - who eats that stuff) is an off-brand with lesser species of ingredients compared to the whitefish and pike version they used to have. Favorite red wine? Moved to another section. Raisins? Moved to an other section. Ben and Jerry's? I have to go to CVS to get the popular Americone Dream flavor. Chobani, the most popular yogurt in America? Maybe it's too popular and they have trouble keeping all the flavors in stock. It does seem that other brands have more favorable shelf space at times. On the bright side, the staff is knowledgeable and very helpful and accommodating.

Yelp
(3.5) ~ good conventional grocery store downtown chicago. Should have most items you need...
google avatar

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
This was a quick dropin after a movie. We ran to do a bit of 'light' shopping. It was quiet, low crowds, nicely stocked. We also were after some Monopoly pieces per the promotion through May. The game is digitalized now, you can get the app on your phone to keep track; no more sticking tiny pieces of paper onto a board. But you DO need paper pieces to claim prizes.
google avatar

Shannah H.

Yelp
Super convenient grocery store in the midst of shops and busyness in downtown Chicago. Like any in city grocery store, selection is limited but there are plenty of fresh food to eat healthy and ready to go meals if you're equally tired of eating out and cooking. For those who are travelers, this shop is part of the Safeway Corp, so you'll find familiar store brands and you can use your existing shoppers reward card.
google avatar

Belle L.

Yelp
With my weekly $5 neighborhood coupon + Cashier Anthony's impeccable Customer Service (informative and helpful), I can surely shop here for basics (affordable compared to Mariano's). -Stay away from that nasty looking bakery. -Stay away from that $0.99 Signature Select Fake Corn Tortilla. -Mediocre limited variety, yet a lot of same cheeses. QUESO FRESCO galore! -Lovin' the $1.99 Spinach Bunch. -Lovin' the fresh looking Bok Choy. No worries, when all else fails, you will survive on BOOZE! Booze make everything taste great. Hahaha

Yelp
Very confusing... we were looking for a typical grocery store to stock up on water and other essentials for the weekend. This place is a maze. You literally have to go through every aisle to get to the checkout. We finally did and it was okay. I don't have a better recommendation in this neighborhood... I hope someone does!
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Thank you for being essential workers and staying open and well stocked (except for noodles and TP) during this pandemic, the store was impressively maintained and calm. It's a little tight space but we were able to social distance.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Having a Jewell-Osco across the street from our hotel was very helpful. We ended up going here 3 times in 6 days. This store is actually pretty big but note that it's more Jewell and less Osco. By that I mean it's super limited in the items a typical Osco might have and there's no pharmacy her. Great place.

Yelp
I"m so turned off by the store at Ashland and Wellington. If you see an employee by the name of Gennifer, run the other way. She is as rude as they get. Today was the last straw. I had a question regarding a return. As soon as I approached her at the register she looked the other way. When I said, 'excuse me, she looked at me like I was something stuck to the bottom of her shoe. When I asked her the question, she said (with a deadpan face and don't bother me voice) that she didn't know anything about what I was asking and turned away. Wow, that's customer service for ya.

Yelp
Illinois Lottery Players BEWARE! Went into this location at 550 N State to retrieve my winnings from my scratch offs. The lady behind the counter tried to keep one of my winning tickets ($12 winner). When I questioned her she indicated that I was wrong and that is when I demanded my tickets back and receipts. The manager then became involved and my $12 winner miraculously reappeared. I indicated that this was not the first time this happened but the manager continued to be mute. I will NOT be returning there to redeem my winnings. I have a feeling that this happens often. PLAYERS BEWARE!!!

Yelp
I have mixed feelings at this jewel. It has a lot of of everything. The vegetables are mostly fresh. I had a nasty habit of getting just fried chicken here which they have a ton of. If I come by after 6PM to get baked or grilled chicken it has that not so fresh look. I can tell because I am good at making chicken. Why is this? maybe because its on the way to being dried out as the container its in seems to be heated all the time. I noticed the glass container its in ( when i was there the other day) is kind of broken and a certain part of the chicken glass container is burst out and kind of is broken. They should probably fix it. They have a good salad bar. They employees actually give a s---- about your needs. The tuna in the salad area does not look fresh after 5PM. I am not a food health expert but the tuna looks like it has seen better days like my ex mother in law after a 45 day whiskey binge. I guess you could say the tuna does not look fresh. Sushi is good too. They have a juice bar should you desire to have some other type of food. $5.99 for 8 pieces of chicken is a good price on Monday's if I do say so myself. On the bright side I find this place to be super clean.

Yelp
It's nice to have a full grocery store that is not Whole Foods or Trader Joe's located In the River North/Gold Coast area. However here are many things I do not like about this location. First, it's laid out in a bizarre fashion. For example, some of isles are not straight and end in a dead end. Second, prices tend to higher than a normal Jewel store. Overall, despite it's drawbacks, it's nice to have A Jewel located on the way home from work and within walking distance.

A A.

Yelp
Was there again earlier today. Same Ole same. Most of the workers don't even wear their masks proper. The place is a comedy show of very very slow people.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Ordered delivery once from here while I was home sick and it was never delivered. I called the store and the person I talked to was beyond rude and told me there was nothing they could do - don't bother even ordering delivery.

Yelp
I have to give Jewel props for their effort at this location, my local grocer. They know they're in competition with a certain high end grocery store that's just around the corner, and they've stepped up with a fairly impressive array of organic produce, dairy, meat and pantry items, even offering their own line of organics. I'm a picky shopper, and I can find many items on my list here, including an Italian organic/unfiltered olive oil that I've purchased elsewhere and was truly surprised to see on the shelf. The store layout is a bit discombobulated (dairy can be found in 3 different locations around the store) and the aisles are narrow, but most downtown groceries are like that, where space is at a premium. Staff has been helpful and attentive, even friendly, when I've asked them questions or for assistance. Yes, you may have to run the gauntlet of homeless people asking for a handout outside the store; that'll happen to you at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's too, and is simply a reality of city life. I wouldn't dream of dinging them a star for this, as loitering laws are somewhat lax in the city. I've seen workers outside cleaning the sidewalks and awnings, so they do make an effort. I'll always shop at that other place too, but I start on my list here and save some money.

Yelp
I've had it with this Jewel. They do not enforce masks even though they state on their doors that they do. The one way aisles are a joke with even the employees constantly going the wrong way with their noses sticking out of their masks. I've nicely requested at the customer service desk that they increase monitoring twice and have seen no changes. Unfortunately this is the only grocery store I can walk to so now I guess I'm stuck paying for delivery or an Uber to a store with better safety practices to minimize the risks to my health.

Yelp
This is definitely one of the smallest locations of Jewel that I visited. Being that it is small does not mean it is not as good as the other location, because in fact, I realized that this one is better. Everything is more accessible and easier to find and easy to get. It is not wide and spacious, but it is not full, so I was free to move around, and it is also convenient for me since I do not want to move around and walk around the store just to get everything. It is easy to get everything from each department. When it comes to their selection, it is limited, but they provide a nice selection to choose from. I like their bakery, produce, and meat departments. Everything is fresh, and I did not have any problems buying those particular goods. I was also surprised to see how wide their selection of liquor was. I mean, the store is small and I did not really expect that they would have that kind of wide and amazing selection of liquors. The customer service is friendly and helpful. Lastly, their prices. I must say that their prices are higher compared to the other grocery stores I visited nearby. I like the store because it is clean and organized. I also like their overall selection. However, I honestly do not like their prices.

Yelp
Grocery store seems ok but some items are overpriced, even with inflation in today's economy. But the service could have been much better - especially since the female cashier with very long dreadlocks lied when she said she was going on a break and effectively refusing to help me with my check out items. 1 star for this awful service, 3 stars for the star equals a final rating of two stars

Yelp
Every can was dented and some packaged goods were past the use by date.. don't go unless it's your only option! It happens that we walk past it daily so it's convenient but we always look items over carefully and check dates!

Yelp
So, is it really "Buy One, Get One Free" when all you're doing is doubling the price of your baby back ribs? C'mon!

Yelp
Store Update: With the grand reopening after decorations, I came by to make some purchases with the coupon including trying their new fresh squeeze OJ station. The person manning the station appeared to be lost waiting to get new containers for the OJ which were being brought up. The store is very busy, but overall the check out lines are quite fast. The only downside is Jewel no longer has a savings card and the prices are easily beat elsewhere.

Yelp
This is a decently stocked store -- which would be great, as I work across the street -- but I have *never* gone into this place and come out without having a really crappy encounter with an employee. Sometimes they're just standing in the aisle and won't respond if you ask them politely to move so you can get by. Sometimes I wait at the checkout counter for a full 30 seconds before they'll acknowledge that a person is at their register. Sometimes -- like today -- all of the above will happen, and I will also get charged for items not in my shopping cart. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a busy shopping time or not; it's always an inefficient and frustrating experience. This particular Jewel is (and has been for years) a crappy, crappy store.

Yelp
The store itself is the best you're gonna get in the middle of downtown Chicago. Yes the aisles are cramped and a little more expensive but it is what it is. The employees are always great and go out of their way to help when needed. The biggest and arguably only drawback is the homeless population that has overrun this location. You will immediately be accosted before entering the store and it doesn't stop once inside. I've witnessed individuals using toiletries and then putting back on the shelf, liquor and food being stolen is a regular occurrence, and don't even think about using the restroom. I've noticed a security guard there sometimes at night but it doesn't seem to deter crime in or around the store. I feel for the employees that have to work at this location day in and day out.

Yelp
I really do not like writing terrible reviews, but this is long overdue! This Jewel is in one of the busiest locations and is absolutely the worst. Everything is dirty, the lines are beyond ridiculous (mostly in part because of the way they have it set up) and there are CONSTANTLY boxes in the isles with people putting stuff away. There has got to be a way to stock items at a different time of the day, not 5 p.m. when its a rush hour and tons of people are in there! This is EVERY single day! The produce isle is the worst set up, with people trying to squeeze by one another with no room at all. Please Jewel-Osco re-do the configuration in this store AND the check out lines! I have seen people literally walk in, look at the line and walk back out. With that being said, the new Jewel on Division street is AMAZING! I really wish they would try to replicate that one.

Yelp
I signed up for the delivery service but when I attempted to place my order, it wouldn't allow me to schedule the delivery. I called and placed it over the phone only to find out that the store didn't have all of the items in my shopping cart, I had to provide my items 3 times because the young lady "didn't have paper to write it down" and more importantly, they wouldn't honor the delivery fee online. The delivery fee went from less than $4.00 to over $12.00. It was triple! The items were needed for Ronald McDonald House to honor a commitment I made for food. (I had the flu and couldn't go). If I had not been sick and limited with options, I would have NEVER used Jewel. I have already removed my app and will never shop in this store again. What a shame....
