Old Montreal Gets Dim Sum Bar Jiao And Its $100 Dumpling Next Week | Eater Montreal

"A new dim sum bar on the cusp of opening in Old Montreal will pair a 50-seat space for drinks and small plates with a weekend late-night takeout window; I read that owner Tongue Bui (École Privée; also hosts nights at other venues) and Olivier Berkhani (Phoenix 1, Queen B, Le King Bao) want to fill a gap in the neighborhood for a spot to pre-drink, have a quick meal, and socialize. Jiao’s menu centers on jiaozi-style dumplings — including a showy Rémy Martin Louis XIII–infused dumpling priced at $100 — alongside more accessible items like har gow with shrimp and Alaskan king crab, shumai, an open-faced dumpling with pork, scallop, and shrimp, a flowery wonton soup, and a General Jiao chicken (a take on General Tao) pictured laden with red chiles. As a resto-bar expect a cocktail focus (menu TBD) and mostly Chinese-import beers; the shiny metallic space is built around a lengthy U-bar softened by paper lanterns and a cartoon mural. STATUS — Jiao opens Wednesday, August 1 at 399 Notre-Dame W, from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., seven days a week, with lunch to come at a later date." - Tim Forster

Have been wanting to go here forever and I am quite disappointed. To start off we got there at 8:15 and it was completely empty, I later came to the conclusion that it only got busy the later it got. We got sat at the only secluded spot in the restaurant. We all got plates to share. We ordered the fried calamari, chinatown crispy shrimp, edamame, beef gyoza, beef & broccoli, chicken wings and the filet mignon chow mein. Everything was very hit or miss. The fried calamari tasted like fish with a super thick coat of batter. It just did not taste like squid at all. The shrimp also had the exact same taste, I find. The beef and broccoli was good, alongside the chicken wings and edamame which were amazing. The beef gyoza was meh. The filet mignon chow mein could’ve been good, but the meat tasted extremely strange. It got busier and busier as the night progressed. In terms of service, it was just ok. Would not come back

Food was amazing but unfortunately the service was poor. We had reservations and though it was early and very dead they tried to seat us at the bar. After explaining it was just two of us and we have reservations eventually we were allowed to sit at a table. Took the server about 20 min just to come take our order. Laughable that there was only 3 tables including ours and one had already been eating prior to us being seated. We ordered quite a bit of food so to our surprise the table that was beside ours was moved. When the server brought the food there was very little space and the plate was literally hanging off the side of the table. When we asked why the table was moved we were told just in case anyone comes it lmao. (Unbelievable considering how dead it was!!! So dead the bartenders were standing around chatting in their phones.) So I said well there’s not much space and then we were told by the server that she had to speak with the manager 🙄. After nearly eating half our meal the table was moved back. I’ve attached a photo of how dead it was. I’m from Toronto but I visit Montreal often to see my sister and we like to go out and eat. First time here at this restaurant and fair to say I wouldn’t come back because of the service alone.

Went there with my friends for a birthday dinner. Everyone was happy with the food they got and personaly I think the food was amazing! It wasn't super busy because I think we went too early, but for us it was perfect since we could hear each other talk and didn't have to scream! Will go back for sure

Absolutely amazing experience! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The service was quick, friendly, and super attentive. The food was delicious from start to finish, and every dish came out fresh and full of flavor. The cocktails were on point—well-balanced and so good I could’ve had another round. The whole vibe of the place is just perfect: fun, welcoming, and a great spot to enjoy a night out. Highly recommend!

Come for the live DJ and the drinks and stay for the food. Make sure you make this a stop the next time you’re in Montreal!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE I absolutely love this place Perfect night out Nice vibe, loud music, DJ, and nice songs And most importantly AMAZING FOOD! The food was just perfect Every dish we ordered tasted amazing We tried a couple of the dumplings (matcha and the lobster) both were great, but the lobster was heavenly! Also had the general jiao fried chicken which was REALLY good and the beef fried rice which was also great! I loved it! Great experience! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 😍

Yelp
6/2/25 went for what we thought would be to a Chinese dim sum joint. It's a hipster bar and dim sum joint. A millennial crowd was there today; busy for a Monday evening. Rather dark inside. Booths by the windows and bar seating. There's loud salsa and bachata in the background. Huh?! Most of the dim sum are garnished with micro greens, edible flowers and an unusual sauce. Not to hide poor workmanship, but to enhance the food. The sui mai and har gow are bursting at seams with well seasoned meat. Bigger than the ones I've had in Manhattan's Chinatown. Their chicken wings are larger than expected and delicious. The drinks are well balanced, but watch out; you may lose yours after a few. Service is attentive without being invasive.

Yelp
This is a Chinese restaurant, we went in and found our table. We ordered our drinks, I ordered a dirty martini. It was one of the best I ever had. It started getting crowded. And since was our first night in Montreal and being in a joyful mood, that had some items on the menu that we liked, shumai and har-gow. The size were quite big. And they were quite good. I had a nice time

Yelp
What phenomenal food. We are planning our trip back around this place. The filet mignon fried rice, the dumplings, the soup and ambiance were top notch. Can't wait to come back and try more of their great food.

Yelp
Lovely service, interesting food. We had the duck tacos and soft shell crab bao. Both very delicious and good soup. It was martini Monday so the cocktails were $10. It was a little pricey for the small portions but very good
