I've been coming here sporadically for years. Princess cake loaded with coconut 🥥 is a favorite and definitely a draw for me. The Fremont Street Fest was a reason , yesterday , to return to this longtime coffee location. Service is always reliable, friendly , and fast. Atmosphere hasn't changed over the years. Locally, well frequented. Restrooms 🚻 available. Recommended

Love this coffee spot. Traveled from Chicago, tried a few coffee shops on our trip but this was by far our favorite. The breakfast sandwich and coffee were so fresh and delicious.

My delivery partner and I were early on our route and decided to get some breakfast. To our good fortune, we were close to the coffee shop. Fantastic service when it came to helping a couple first timers decide. The coffee was delicious and well priced. We both got sausage and bacon breakfast sandwiches, their number 3 and agreed that they were hands down the best. Certainly worth every penny!

Google
Coffee and pastries this place nails it. Breakfast menu has good flavor but miss the mark for price and quality. Happily would stop in again for coffee cakes and java.

Google
Delicious coffee and lovely location to get work and some reading done. I like the blackboard on the restroom that had suggestions on books to read. Nice spot!

Google
I really tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt and I was very patient but In the end you can't take forever, be incredibly rude, get the order wrong, AND have the coffee taste gross. Idk what was up, I had high hopes when I walked in and I was patient and friendly the whole time, but I just can't give it more than 3 stars, and I feel like that's being generous. I would probably give them another shot, because we all have bad days, but today was unfortunate.

Google
We order for take out the Black Tiger milkshake after we watch the News that this place same owner of Coffee People. Our memories coffee shop 10 years ago. OMG taste the same yummy and unique can't find anywhere else. Please continue on your business 🙏 we love your black tiger milkshake so much ❤️❤️❤️

Google
The service was quick and barista was excellent. Ordered a banana and an iced latte. They added a little chocolate covered espresso bean on top of my cup as an accoutrement, which I thought was cute.

Yelp
I came looking for that coffee ice cream drink! Cute little shop, people just kept coming in! We came in mid morning and it was busy! Typical coffee shop, you have people dropping in to grab their coffee fix and people staying around working or catching up. So many menu options it was hard to ask what certain items were since it was non stop customers and I didn't want to keep them from getting their coffee! We finally gave up and stopped the line. I wanted something coffee, ice cream, blended and decided on the Kahlua Screamer and it was perfect! Already a warm 80 degree morning, it was just what I needed! The Kahlua screamer consisted of coffee, vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips into a blended milk shake! Not super thick, it was easy to drink and exactly what I wanted! Friendly staff, clean shop with seating inside and out. Street parking was easy. Thanks for my morning coffee ice cream deliciousness! 2024: 25

Yelp
Upon walking in, I saw that it was pretty busy, but had plenty of space. This is probably not a fast coffee or breakfast spot, if in a hurry. However, if you have time, it's worth a stop. They have lots of baked goods and breakfast sandwich options. The pig newton seems iconic, but I didn't try one yet. My iced latte was delicious. I didn't even add sugar or flavor, no need. Great coffee! I chose the dancing goat egg sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit. Overall, I was a little disappointed. The egg was very thin and the biscuit was fairly dry. I would say bacon was decent and it had plenty of goat cheese. Personally, I'd want more caramelized onions and more egg. I would opt for sourdough next time, too. My partner got the hipster bowl and was pretty good happy. It was lots of gravy with the biscuit bowl. A lot of people I know enjoy this spot regularly and recommend it. The coffee cake looked incredible, along with other items in the case. I'll definitely come back to try more.

Yelp
Great early morning stop when the sun has yet to rise. Have yet to try to the food, but looked delicious in the case and on the menu, definitely will stop in for a full breakfast next time!

Andrew A.

Yelp
Was a regular for decades, but haven't been since 2019. Had to stop by when I heard about Jim's passing, he was a kind human. Asked for the "Jesus Latte", but counter guy had no idea what I was talking about. Coffee Cooler was good. The place doesn't feel as comfy as from what I remember. Nice to see those Pig Newtons are thriving.

Marissa F.

Yelp
This place was wonderful. The staff was super friendly and informative. The chai was sooo good. definitely returning soon when I visit Oregon again.

Yelp
If you lived in Portland back in the day like I did I, then you were probably a fan of Coffee People like I was. My dad and I would swing by and grab a black tiger shake with whipped cream once a week. I have very fond memories and was elated when my husband drove up to Jim & Patty's on our most recent visit to Portland because we last had a shake at their PDX location before they closed. My husband knows how to surprise me and win me over. Did people look at us like we were crazy for ordering an espresso milkshake while it was cold and rainy out? You betcha but it didn't stop me from sucking it down. It brought tears to my eyes and took me back 27 years ago in line with my dad. The shake is still as good, had a nice and strong espresso flavor, creamy ice cream with bits of espresso grounds mixed throughout. If you've never been to Jim & Patty's, I urge you to at least try it once. It's an old school Portland coffee institution that was around before the big green conglomerate took over and bought out Coffee People. Same colors, same drinks and same local shop feel.

Yelp
Best food options: pig newtons obviously. But less obviously? Biscuits and gravy. That hipster bowl is stunning!! Warning, they run out of food pretty quick some days.

Jonathan W.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. It also opens early enough that early risers aren't waiting until 9 am for a good breakfast and coffee.

Ailette B.

Yelp
Wow!! Super fresh homemade biscuit, egg, cheese, and sausage sandwiches-best we've ever had! Latte was delicious also!

Suzanne B.

Yelp
Great breakfast foods!! And the coffee is excellent!! It's pet friendly and kid friendly. Yummy baked goods! The service is great too!!

Jon D.

Yelp
Outstanding coffee. Breakfast biscuit sandwich was really dry and not very flavorful. I was going to get a pastry but they have shrunk the portions size down by 2/3 so you now get a 1/3 of what you used to get for the same price. Used to be a big fan now just disappointed!

Dani G.

Yelp
Yummy coffee and savory bites. Great selection cute place to eat and drink and friendly staff

Sarah C.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Jim & Patty's! Good coffee, polite staff, a range of pastries and prepared items, some scattered outlets for plugging in for a few hours of laptop work, a mad assortment of chairs and tables. People seem to do okay at staying masked when they're not actively eating but I might like a bit more distance between tables. They're a "local chain" as I like to call it - four locations across the Portland metro. I haven't visited their other locations. Nor have I tried their infamous coffee cake (which they sell out of). But I hope to do both in the future!

Ploy N.

Yelp
Disappointed by the massive line outside of Pip's, we walked into Jim & Patty's that mended our broken hearts with delicious Fancy Moka Drinks and a scrumptious Dancing Goat Breakfast Sandwich (with buttery biscuit!). The drinks (Peanut Butter and Black Forest) sounded waaay to hefty to be nice but they're both very well-balanced and chuckable, even with whipped cream. The use of dark chocolate helped developed a more complicate flavor. The unique notes were subtle, especially for the black forest (not a lot of cherry), but I enjoyed the occasional hints of salty peanut butter. Like I said, the Breakfast Sandwich was delightful. Super buttery biscuit sandwiched flavorful sausage, egg, goat cheese, and caramelized onions. What more could you ask for. Definitely a hefty portion for one too so could do with splitting. Nice service and great, cozy indoor setting. This was an unexpected visit but never the less a memorable one.

Greg E.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and breakfasts! Great staff!! Relaxing place to get your day started.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Jim and Patty's won't show up on many lists covering must-tries in PDX and that is SAD, because they really should be included. Fantastic service, rich & fresh coffee, yummy pastries and absolutely scrumptious breakfasts! I've been here multiple times whilst living in Portland however, I was as big as a foodie back then so my review is based on my most recent experience. For breakfast I chowed down on the Benedict Arnold (biscuits and sausage gravy with eggs atop, $5.00 for half order, $7.00 for full). I appreciated the giant chunks of sausages mixed in with the very flavorful and creamy gravy. The egg was cooked perfectly and delivered and very satisfying yolk break. One part of my biscuit was way overdone, I felt like I was eating hardtack for a second. It was a small part, nothing too bad at all. 10/10 would eat again, if they didn't have such a crazy large menu I'm determined to cover!

Andrea J.

Yelp
I ordered a latte it was delicious. Better than Starbucks. And the coffee shop was cozy.

Krista M.

Yelp
Great location, good food, and a big table for families. Also has books and a few games to help pass the time.

Tim K.

Yelp
The woman at the cash register (the owner? manager?) was unbelievably rude. She rolled her eyes when my husband asked a question about the mochas. And the breakfast sandwiches were pitiful.

Katherine S.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwiches. Wonderful drink menu. The atmosphere is comfortable and good for working and chatting. Service is excellent.

George B.

Yelp
This used to be a great place for breakfast and coffee. The menu of breakfast cakes has been cut in half, and much of that is now gluten free. The princess coffee cake was the best cake they had, it now tastes like glue. The last three times I have ordered a biscuit with egg and bacon, the bacon was burned. Inedible last time. Threw it out. I emailed the management who didn't offer a credit or refund. Sad. This has been a favorite place for fifteen years.

Darren Y.

Yelp
Great place for shakes. Usually get the coffee shake - they have like 10 different variations but tried the fresh fruit shakes. Strawberry was soooo good. Also tried the sour cherry which didn't taste like much and the server appeared to be surprised it was on the menu

Diana H.

Yelp
Frigging Fremont Latte (done breve, of course) was a wonderful way to start my Saturday! What delicious flavors of cinnamon, honey and vanilla dancing in my coffee! Hipster bowl was bacon and eggs with biscuits and gravy! Yum! Hubby got the Southwestern Sammy with jalapeños, eggs, pepperjack cheese and salsa on a biscuit. Love this local place! Will make it a regular stop.

Tom A.

Yelp
What a great spot this place is! The Bacon Constrictor is so good I can't try anything else. It's the best a neighborhood can expect in a coffee shop. An hour whisks by in happiness and I'd love to live nearby. The parking is easy past the sop and down the dead end street.

Ryley D.

Yelp
Stopped in here by chance on a trip and could not recommend them more! I got the Sausage, egg and cheese on a biscuit. Possibly the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The biscuit was flaky and had a nice crisp outside. I took the sandwich to go and ate outside as the inside was full. I'd be sure to plan ahead if you wanted to sit inside. The service was good, everyone was polite and professional albeit brief for a counter pickup. Would definitely recommend.

Tobias F.

Yelp
I completely understand that a latte has frothed milk in it and should have a layer of foam. What I can't get on board with is being charged $7 (I even got a quad shot) for a coffee that's literally half empty. It certainly was not a real 16oz and probably wasn't even a true 12oz either. The picture doesn't even really show where the foam ends which is the worst part. Pig newton was great. Usually love this place.

Christine N.

Yelp
Had the PBJ latte and the hazelnut praline coffee. We also had the pig newton and the bacon constrictor. For a quick stop it was perfect.

Bradford B.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Good prices for generous portions! This has been a favorite since the former century!!

Geoffrey A.

Yelp
Used to be my favorite cafe in Portland. The coffee was really good but the baked goods were amazing! Lately, whenever I go in, the bakery case is virtually empty. I've also had a couple lousy mochas. My recommendation is find someplace else until they step up their game. Disappointed! Again!

Valerie W.

Yelp
The americano was excellent but the breakfast sandwich was laughable. Like, just don't offer a vegetarian option if this is what you serve? (Vegan garlic aioli added by me) Honestly disappointed. This would have been one star if based solely on the food, americano brought it up.

Johnny D.

Yelp
Went to Jim and Patty's today Internet said they were open Facebook says they're open yelp says they're open I drive 20 miles to get there and they're closed then the smart ass young lady inside cleaning give me the old hand to the eye like she's wiping a tear away say no coffee for you today.

Taisiya S.

Yelp
Another place that is in my hood that I love. I walk here all the time and get the Adult Mocha that has honey and dark chocolate and one of their many amazing treats. Like the Brioche Roll (must try) or some of their scrumptious Coffee Cake. I will have to try more things and let you know. I have also tried the Soviet Mocha and it's also really good. As well as just the regular coffee is good. But since I like to come here to treat myself...I get the Mochas. I checked out the other Yelp reviews and the photos look so good I think I'm going to have to come more often just t try and sample of of their great coffee concoctions. Everything here looks REALLY good and the staff are always really nice.

Denice R.

Yelp
They've been doing coffee a long time. Since 1973. That's pre-SBX (blech) just sayin'. I like the vibe of their place: just draw tasty espresso, serve some tasty food made in-house, make it affordable, and don't be pretentious about it. They have a cool van, too. Great location right on Fremont. Plenty of street parking. 5 stars for longevity and staying normal.

Sarah O.

Yelp
Great brunch spot! So many options on the menu, it was hard to choose but I'm so satisfied with my decision. I got the Dancing Goat sando and a Hazelnut Praline Latte with oat milk. The bacon was perfectly crisped and paired with goat cheese, major fan! Thank you to the kind employee who recommended it! I couldn't finish the whole sandwich, I was stuffed. The coffee was a 5/5, immediately wished I ordered a size up upon my first sip. I dined in and read while listening to their nostalgic 90s alternative music and took a glance at their growing community board. Bathrooms were clean. Dishes were placed in bins by customers as they finished up. The ambiance was illustrated by laidback locals ordering usuals, meeting up for a meal, or sitting in for a few to get some work done on their laptops or reading time in. WiFi available! I can definitely see myself returning for a breakfast date or study sess soon with my next order already in mind.

Sam G.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, the food is great, but that's about as far as the positives go. I have had food from here 30+ times, and the past 10 times I have been in, they have gotten literally every piece of the order wrong. Not to mention the coffee tasting burnt on a regular basis. The service is honestly not great either, as when I called in an order, they said that they would put aside two pastries, but when I went in to grab my food and pay, the person at the counter said that they had accidentally sold out already. I get if that happens once or twice, miscommunications are inevitable. However, this specific thing has happened on multiple occasions. Lastly and most common for me, is the sandwiches. The quality is pretty good, and its the sole reason I've come back after having my order wrong so many times. The one downside about the sandwiches is that this is the part they mess up every single time. I order a #3 straight off the menu with sausage on a biscuit, and I get bacon on a bagel. Ordering in groups is no easier, as I went in this morning and they messed up 4/4 sandwiches. I have personally worked in food service, and from experience I can say that it's really not hard to get at least one item correct, especially if it's straight off the menu and unaltered. From an outside perspective, I'm not sure where the fault is in the Jim and Patty's system, whether it be managerial or general employee based, but there certainly is a critical error that needs to be addressed. Overall, if you're looking for a great and reliable breakfast place, this might not be the best option for you. Might as well just ask the front counter to surprise you with a random order. That's what you'll get anyways. Pretty good food though, as long as you're okay with getting something that you didn't order.

Sarah E.

Yelp
I ordered this for the first time today, first let me say, refreshingly affordable! Breakfast me for my crew and coffee for me. The Pig Newton's were DELICIOUS and the Veggie Newton was a welcome surprise for my non-pork eater. We may have just changed the breakfast game for the rest of her life! The coffee... oh.my.goodness. This is by far the best coffee I have EVER had, and I'm old enough to have consumed a lot of coffee. I just took my last sip and I am craving more of it. They have ruined all other coffee places for me.

Rilla I.

Yelp
Delicious! Great coffee and great, solid breakfast food. One of the better coffee shops in town.

Jack W.

Yelp
Unbelievable bad service today. I was ignored by 4 employees behind the register, from 11:45am until 12:05pm, when I was informed the kitchen closed at noon despite the sign that says Open until 1 pm. This was my lunch break, and it's gone. I can't treat MY customers this way. I've had to plan 1-2 hours on Special Occasions recently, to get served here. Despite waiting patiently and with understanding of difficult circumstances, Jim and Patty's is no longer a viable option. If you continue this way, you'll be selling your locations back to Starbucks again, and nobody wants that. Jim and Patty's: Please improve this experience. I invite you to hire better employees, and provide the experience we all used to love so much.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Always enjoy stopping here for breakfast when we visit our kids. Everything I've tried has been delicious. Today I had the Florentine Sandwich (egg, caramelized onions, spinach, and cheese on Dave's bread). So yummy. My husband had The Natural (egg, caramelized onion, zucchini & veggies, cheese, on a basil tomato cheese bagel). Henry had a Pig Newton.

Sam B.

Yelp
These poor baristas are so underpaid and overworked, I've been to this location a few times and have seen awful customers be very rude to the baristas relentlessly. They also cook all breakfast sandwiches on a small breakfast skillet that you can buy at Walmart, even though customers are ordering sandwiches all day. It took forever to get a sandwich because of this, but these poor baristas are trying their best to make customers happy. Jim and patty really need to re-evaluate their priorities, maybe start with keeping their employees happy or having a station to actually cook breakfast if you serve breakfast?

Steve V.

Yelp
They have been a Portland staple for decades. Great breakfast, incredible coffee, and baked goods that will make you return again and again. Favorites / must try: ANY of their brioche pastries! Be prepared for a little wait on the weekends, but nothing like Screen Door.

Andrea P.

Yelp
Everything is soooo yummy and pretty reasonably priced. Particularly their hipster bowl, princess coffee cake, and ultimate pumpkin pie latte And I don't even like pumpkin spiced anything usually! I order from there often and recommend it to anyone who needs feedback, lol.

Ron E.

Yelp
Comfortable atmosphere, good coffee, enough tables you aren't uncomfortable spending time chatting with friends

Caleb C.

Yelp
If you are working for a delivery service such as Doordash, uber eats, etc. good luck. I went to pick up two DoorDash orders from here. When I arrived there was No line. Went to the counter that had the door dash pick up sign and waited there for 15 minutes and could not get help. They would help other customers that trickled in but not me. I ended up canceling the orders. Big bummer.

Andrew H.

Yelp
On a slightly drizzling kind of day. Basically a typical day during the fall and winter months, I was wandering my neighborhood and checking out places I hadn't stepped into. I was about to turn around and head home and being that it was still before 12pm, I figured I'd warm up with a little hot chocolate. Being that I don't drink coffee (the horror to some of you) I went into Jim & Patty's to see what they would offer. Friendly place in shades of blue, brown and tan. I took a look at the chalk board and I saw Mexican hot chocolate. Nice. I haven't had one of those since living in Texas and I'm not sure that many of the small coffee joints offer it. It's not really a hard thing, hot chocolate with cinnamon. Although some I've had do also contain a bit of a kick from some dried peppers. This version just had cinnamon. The counter guy was right on it and relayed the info off to the guy at the register and I sat down to wait on my hot beverage of rich chocolate. I got a 16oz one and well look at the photo, it was huge. It was also very creamy and not burn the roof off your mouth hot. The cinnamon was subtle but you knew it was there. I nursed it and read a book. Not a bad way to kill an hour relaxing. I like the personalities of the small shops that have only one or two shops to their name. They have charm, character and not a forced ambiance with cornball music. Stop by Jim & Patty's it's one of the good ones. Enjoy.

John S.

Yelp
The crew at Jim & Patty's, including the namesakes and plenty of family members, keep cranking out the coffee with No Backtalk, same as in their Coffee People days in the 1990s. From a single store on Freemont, last year they reopened a shop in Beaverton that had been an original Coffee People location back in the day. They're planning a third location to open later this year across the street from Good Sam hospital. They offer some of the best coffee and some of the most innovative mixtures, including my favorite, the chocolate and orange mocha Borgia. The Pig Newtons, Naughty Supermodel coffee cake and Brazil cheesy bread are wonderful, as are their freshly made breakfast sandwiches. They even have "jail food," day-old offerings at bargain prices. They say it's just like you'd get in jail, but I doubt prisoners have ever eaten so well.

L S.

Yelp
Was recently in Portland visiting and saw that this coffee spot was highly rated. I went there and got the coconut oatmeal coffee cake and an almond milk latte. My hubs got a breakfast sandwich. It was all so delicious. I mean like best coffee cake I've ever had, delicious. The coffee was on point too. We really loves this place and wished they had one in LA. Or maybe sell coffee beans online.

Christopher Y.

Yelp
My coworker and I came here here on Thursday afternoon looking for coffee and something to eat. We ordered iced coffees while the cashier was making our drinks we looked through the display case but didn't see anything that but sweets. I saw a small case next to the cash register with a few newtons in it. I ordered a veggie newton, immediately after ordering I noticed a small sign attached to a post directly above my head that contained sandwich and breakfast items served until 2pm. When the cashier brought our drinks over I asked if I could cancel the newton and get sandwich instead? I was told that they stop serving breakfast at 2pm, I informed her that it was 2:02. She told me they start breaking the grill down at 2pm with no exceptions. While the cashier was very nice, I was frustrated by the lack of eagerness. Perhaps she could have checked to see if maybe the kitchen was still able to make a sandwich 2 mins after they started breaking down the grill. The breakfast scene from Falling Down flashed through mind.

Yelp
Everything is great! The free wifi is a decent speed. There about 20 tables inside and 3 tables outside. When I walked in, there were two people on their laptops using the Wifi already. Coffee People at PDX told me that Jim & Patty's were the original owners, and that I could come here for my Mexican Hot Chocolate fix instead of going to PDX. Willie makes outstanding Hemp milk Mexican Hot Chocolate! It's far better than at Coffee People. Their famous Hippie cookie also far outweighs the ones at Coffee People. Don't get me wrong; when at PDX go for Coffee People! Great to have Jim & Patty's in town with the essence and soul of the original recipes that make them the best in their class:)
