We wanted to love this place, really. The vibe is cool, somewhere between homey and commercial...not fancy, but nice enough, Let me start out with the best of it. That tortilla soup is fantastic! If that's all we had I'd give a 5 star. I would come back for that alone. My wife's chicken taco's were also really good! I think it's the same shredded chicken they use for the soup, which was tasty and soft. But I ordered the chicken fajita, and it wasn't as successful a meal, on a food and service front. #1, it looked amazing. I was so excited to try it. The grilled veggies were caramelized and tasty, but the chicken? So much rubber you could play basketball with it. They were bland and bouncy. Like, it completely fooled you because they looked like they were perfectly seasoned and grilled, but I have a suspicion that it was either overcooked on the spot, or it was cooked and just sat around heated, ready to be served like chipotle style. The reason I lean towards that (but I may be wrong, but that's part of the other issue with the meal) is that there was no regard to timing of the meals. The entrees were served at the exact same time as the soup. Like no regard to the dining "experience," more cafeteria style, take it all at once. So we had to rush through the soup so we could get to the dinner, and that was annoying because the soup was the best part! And the fajitas was shockingly disappointing.
The other annoying thing was the guy who took our order. He was nice enough, but he seemed burnt out and not really that attentive to questions. For instance, I asked him what kind of drinks they had, because I was anticipating that they would have Mexican/glass bottle coke. He pointed to the soda fountain machine. But on the way out I saw the glass fridge with all the great drink options, I was like, dude, he should have told me when I asked! Next, let's just say we had a miscommunication and I didn't realize there would be sour cream on top of the food...I wish it was separated but no. I hate sour cream. I apologized and put the blame on me, but I asked specifically, after the girl intimated that they would take it off, that I wanted whole new sides. I HATE it when places just "scrape off" the unwanted ingredient. It's lazy and stingy. And I asked specifically that it be replaced because I absolutely didn't want to find any trace of it in the food. Needless to say, they scraped it off and there was still sour cream on my beans, and I had to get rid of about half of my side of beans to get rid of it. I just don't appreciate having this specific request ignored like that, I even said I could wait.
Also, my wife gave me some leftover chicken meat from her tacos and it saved the fajita, I wish the fajita chicken was close to being that good, but it just wasn't.
Now let's talk about the tortilla chips. I'm sad to say others were right,. We couldn't believe how stale they tasted. And flavorless, not even a touch of salt. A self respecting Mexican place would have such lackluster chips? And then there's the salsa bar. Why is it that they don't have pico de Gallo there? It's cheap enough to buy sides of them, but I think it's stingy that they don't offer that there like many Mexican places. A few of the salsas were good (verde, the spicy ones, and mild tomato), but that mild regular salsa tasted bland and watery. So that's about it. I'm sorry to be negative about some of the negatives, but I wish the food was as good as it had the promise to be. But again, the saving grace is that tortilla soup. We loved it, and on a cold day would go there just for that.
