The Best Father’s Day Gifts for Dads Who Love to Cook | Eater

"Pitmaster Nick Pihakis endorses the beer-can (upright) chicken roaster as one of the best ways to cook a chicken, noting that upright roasting lets fat drip away, allows heat to surround the bird 360 degrees for crisper skin, and lets steam and vapors flavor the meat from the inside so it stays moist; the recommended model holds up to two five-pound birds and includes a pan for roasting vegetables." - Maxine Builder

Our visit to Jim 'N Nick's was a perfect example of how exceptional customer service can elevate an entire dining experience. After what had been a long day with a few unexpected hiccups, we arrived hoping for a good meal to turn things around. We found far more than that, thanks in large part to Christine. Christine was truly a standout. From the moment she began serving us, it was clear she was dedicated to ensuring our comfort and satisfaction. She didn't just meet our expectations; she exceeded them, anticipating our needs and going above and beyond to make sure we "had everything we had and more." Her attentive and proactive approach made us feel genuinely cared for, and she literally "waited on us hand and foot." This level of personalized care transformed our evening, making us forget the earlier mishaps and truly enjoy the moment. Beyond the stellar service, the food itself was equally exceptional. Every dish we tried was delicious and clearly prepared with care, reinforcing the positive impression left by Christine. The combination of incredible service and outstanding food created a truly memorable experience. We were so impressed that we would definitely come back to Jim 'N Nick's. It's rare to find a place where both the culinary offerings and the human element of service are so perfectly aligned, making for a genuinely delightful outing.

We dined in and made a to go order. Our food in the restaurant was great. Our to go order was disappointing. We waited an additional 30 minutes after our meal to get the order. The order was missing the sides we ordered. My chopped chicken sandwich was not at all like what I had in the restaurant. It was a chicken wing with a huge bone in it. I'm glad I didn't just bite into it. The incorrect sides wasn't such a big deal but that sandwich was a waste of money and the time we spent waiting on it!

In the area and in the mood for some barbecue, then you should give Jim and Nick’s a try. I went with pulled pork sandwich, the meat was juicy and tender, and had a good flavor. Adding the slaw, gave it a nice little crunch however the pickles were a little limp. Had the pickles been crunchy then it would’ve been a fantastic sandwich. The bond was marvelous. As for the side of potato salad, nothing unique but solid. I give this sandwich a 3 1/2 star and from me that’s pretty good.

Heyyy Internet Fam! Visited this spot for my bday and was not disappointed. Dana was our waitress. We nicknamed her Dangerous Dana because she gonna have you wanting to buy everything. She dangerous if you don’t want a big back!!!! The hospitality was top tier. The food was chef kiss. Baby definitely order the chicken nachos starter if there is a big table. Tried the rich meat brisket and homemade Mac — delicious. Turkey was also very moist and unexpectedly good. Haven’t had turkey that good in a long time. Collard greens were slamming!! I tried the potato salad, it looked great but was missing something. The Cole slaw was also not my personal fave. However, that banana pudding was the old fashioned way. It unlocked childhood memories like none other. Can you tell I had a blast?! Family there is nothing like great food and excellent hospitality. Go ahead and treat yourself!! You won’t leave the same in Jesus name.

There was Thanksgiving weekend and I hadn’t had a piece of seasonal pie. I told my husband I wanted to find a place that Served pecan pie and I remembered Jim and Nick had it. We went for the pie, but what we found was some of the best lean brisket I’ve ever eaten and a really great baked potato stuffed full of goodness. Our waitress is serving about 30 people at a table beside us that seemed very time-consuming. She was very kind and communicative with us that she would be right with us. Checked in with us for about 10 minutes a few times because she wasn’t able to get to us. She was very friendly and by the time she did get to us, she gave us great service. I would highly recommend This restaurant because it seems like a good value and nice people working in it even though the atmosphere is pretty basic. If you want value and great food, this is a great place to eat.

I visited Jim and Nick's in Concord for the first time, and I have to say, it exceeded my expectations! I was a bit skeptical at first since I hadn’t found many good BBQ places, but Jim and Nick's definitely delivered. The experience was fantastic, especially thanks to the wonderful service from Ms. Garcia (or Joanne). She was so friendly, attentive, and welcoming to me, my wife, and our daughter. She really made the visit special. The food was delicious, and the desserts were amazing! If I’m in the area again, I’ll be happy to return. I hope Ms. Garcia is still there—she was truly uplifting and made the experience even better.

Google
Good atmosphere but poor service and they were running out of food! The server didn't provide us any updates that the kitchen was running behind and asked if the the host shared with us as at seating time that there's a wait on food. The host didn't share that with us and is that the host or servers responsibility? We had to ask for our server because food was taking too long and she didn't check in on us after drinks and appetizers were received. We didn't get our food until an hour after we were seated. Also, we ordered 2 brisket plates. One came out normal and the other one didnt. The server didnt apologize for the weird, dry brisket end piece and tried to say it was marbled but it clearly wasn't. The server took no ownership and didnt apologize for the delay or the dry shreded like brisket. I don't not recommend this place and won't be going back.

Google
Hands-down one of the best BBQ spots around! Jim ‘N Nick’s in Concord never disappoints. The food is always hot, fresh, and full of flavor—especially the pulled pork and the brisket, which are tender and perfectly smoked. The sides are just as good (those cheese biscuits are dangerously addictive), and the service is consistently friendly and fast. A special shoutout to Gloria, our server—she was absolutely fantastic! Friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. You can tell she genuinely cares about her guests and takes pride in what she does. Clean restaurant, great atmosphere, and top-notch staff. Definitely my go-to BBQ joint in the area. Highly recommend!

Yelp
After that other place across town that's not worth mentioning - we sped away from that shop - JNN made me feel like we made the right choice. I felt bad pushing my friends but we needed food and the other place just didn't give a mac. Well, at JNN, the server actually greets you, brings you water, takes your order, and checks on you! Normal server things! Yay. JNN feels like Mission BBQ inside - rather bright, music playing, but not overly kid-oriented (no loud birthday celebrations for example, I heard a waitress wish someone a happy birthday and that was that). Good southern taste. Those cheesy corn biscuits that came right out to the table, oh. my. goodness. I'm so sad that we drove out past the drive-through and it said you could order them by the half-dozen or dozen! I so could have taken another bag of those home with me. Creamy, fluffy, sweet, perfection. The special mac n cheese balls - very good, maybe a little too greasy and over-fried on the outside. Kinda masked the taste inside. As for the entree? My first bite of chicken was a little tough, but it got better as I ate into it. If you can handle a little twinge of heat, ASK FOR THE HONEY HOT BBQ SAUCE. One of the best sauces I've ever come across. It went on everything, though the chicken honestly stood on its own merits. Of the sides, I think I overdid it with the mac and the app. The collards are tasty with their meat included, but not quite cooked down enough - still crunchy. My friend enjoyed the baked beans and their meat. Well, with good service, atmosphere, and food, I had to walk out of there with the dessert. Dark molasses, pecans all the way through? That's my vibe. And of the many north Charlotte BBQ places, I vote that this should be yours as well.

Yelp
We stopped in at Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q and were not disappointed! We started with the deviled eggs, which was such a fun surprise--I don't think I've ever seen deviled eggs on a restaurant menu before. They were creamy, flavorful, and the perfect start to the meal. Then came a basket of their cheese biscuits... oh my goodness, those are to die for! I ordered the pork with their house barbecue sauce and chose collard greens and mac and cheese for my "trimmings" (that's what they call sides). The collard greens had a nice spicy kick, and the mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. Two of my colleagues ordered the brisket and said it was the best they've ever had--I was almost wishing I'd ordered that too! We wrapped things up with banana pudding, and let's just say the plate was practically licked clean. If you're anywhere near Charlotte, Jim N Nick's is definitely worth a stop--great barbecue, friendly service, and those cheese biscuits alone make it memorable.

Yelp
No complaints! Delicious food- moist chicken, ribs were okay my husband said middle was delicious but end was a little hard and the Mac n cheese was delicious! I always enjoy a Mac with a crust! My favorite has to be their cheese biscuits! Our waitress was nice and attentive but not in the way lol which was perfect. The place is fairly large which is nice especially if you have a small group you won't have to wait long probably. The music was nice all in all a nice spot to eat.

Bri S.

Yelp
Jim n Nicks is usually on point with anything I order, inside & drive thru. When ordering drive thru I usually only grab a dozen biscuits and 95% of the time they're hot and fresh but the last 3 times I've ordered them they've been pretty burnt to the point they're quite tough & inedible. I don't know if they're giving me the rejects or what but they definitely haven't been up to the standard I know they can achieve...
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Jim N Nicks is the BEST! The best bbq ever. When traveling to Charlotte we always stop at Jim n nicks bbq. We've never had a wait, and the one time it was crowded we sat at a the bar, easy! I love their bbq, the bbq beans are amazing, and the cheese biscuits are out of this world! A cool thing is their seating and ambiance. There are booths up higher like bar table height not a booth. And the same ones lower. The are booths open on both sides. It's easy for people to come and go. But the food!!!

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere Biscuits not as warm as other visit. Wings were amazing as always I will never order anything else now! Waitress was nice and bubbling laugh I loved her.

Yelp
Today, there was a long wait to be seated at Jim's N Nick's. Once seated, our server wasn't very good at providing service, to the point where another server came by, tood drink and food order even though she was not our server. She checked on us frequently, even bringing our appetizer and food while our server was dealing with other tables. Finally, our assigned server came by and said she was behind and couldn't take our order or deliver the food but she was very quick to bring us the check. I tipped the crappy server 5% and gave the server who actually gave us great attention a cash tip, thanking her for thinking of us, and taking care ofcthe situation, even though she didn't have any obligation to do so.

Yelp
Great restaurant for BBQ and smoked meats. Quick courteous service and great for family/group meals. The Korean chicken wings are amazing and the brisket melts in your mouth...oh my the cheesy corn muffins are a must have
google avatar

Sonya T.

Yelp
Despite being understaffed during our visit they still managed to serve up some of the tastiest bbq I've ever had. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was outstanding. Stayed in a nearby hotel for a concert and I'm so glad we ended up here for dinner. The honey habanero sauce on the wings was to die for. I meant to buy a bottle on the way out but forgot. Will definitely be back next time I come to a show at PNC Pavilion.
google avatar

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town and it was our first time there.. & it was absolutely delicious! The cheese biscuits were out of this world & everyone in our family's meals were so good! The portions were big and our waitress was great. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere. Next time we're in town, we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
One of the best barbecue places in the country! I used to come here all the time when I lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I was thrilled to see that there was another location in Concord because it's literally the best! Everything from their cheesy biscuits, from their pulled pork sandwiches, deviled eggs, mac n cheese and brisket, you literally cannot go wrong here. The service is always amazing and the waitresses are always so sweet, they all treat their customers with genuine southern hospitality. If you're looking for good barbecue with good service, this is a spot you do not want to miss out on.
google avatar

Dionah T.

Yelp
This one will be short and sweet... Great burger, in regard to taste, which is why I drove to this location and ordered to-go. I had a combo with a side of fries. I had to remind the person at the window that I was due a drink because only my food was given to me. When I get home, I have enough fries to count in an oversized container that's clearly intended for more... and they were barely luke warm. If I were in the restaurant I would request a hot (full) side of fries. Essentially I paid $13 for a burger, cold fries and a drink (that's mostly ice).

Yelp
Rainy days, cloudy day any day is a good day to go to Jim N Nicks. Fast seating quick service and good food. It's always a pleasure to dine there.

Yelp
My family and I tried this jewel after leaving the mills. Our waitress, Hannah was phenomenal. She was very patient, and attentive. She gave us her favorites, and also told us abt other popular items. Her teamwork with the kitchen was great and fast! We got our food in no time. I ordered a quarter dark, with corn on the Cobb and coleslaw. The chicken was moist with a good bit of Smokey flavor but I smothered in their white sauce YUMMMMMM!! It was amazing! Peppery, creamy, spicy, with a tangy bite!! My coleslaw was good but my preference is vinegar based slaw. The service was the star, can't say enough abt her job well done! Service 10/10 Chicken & Sauce 8.9/10 Slaw 5/10 Corn 7.1/10
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite barbecue place when we lived in Alabama, same experience at the Concord location. Cheese biscuits are incredible, too.
google avatar

George D.

Yelp
A recent arrival from their roots in Alabama, they bring a different and tasty spin to NC BBQ. The restaurant is spacious and bright, and the staff friendly and well-informed. The menu offers a good variety of options, so you're sure to find something for whatever hankering you have. Try it, you'll like it!

Travis P.

Yelp
It's a very nice establishment, and the service was great. The food however left a lot to be desired. Even for Restaurant bbq this was sad. I've never had tough brisket until this plate. The Brisket was tough had little to no smoke ring, had zero bark on the ends and was cut the wrong direction. The pulled pork was mushy and bland The sausage was delicious on the inside but over cooked by a lot on the outside. Beans and coleslaw were nothing special. Just canned beans. The corn "biscuits " were the best part of the meal sadly.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for awhile now but it was always pretty busy when I was in the area. Decided to order takeout. This loaded bbq potato was definitely loaded. It lacked flavor and didn't seem to have any seasoning on the meat. I would give them another try tho and order something different
google avatar

Terry M.

Yelp
Completely trash no flavor bland no smoke flavor at all. Get better BBQ out of a bowl from the grocery store. Completed waste of $50. They need to close the doors of this is the trash they are selling WTF
google avatar

Marcee A.

Yelp
The service was ridiculously poor. They were not so busy and the greeter could make a decision where we could sit. After ordering my food arrived before my drink and I was told that the bartender got backed up. Again, I say there were not that many patrons in the restaurant. The biscuits are no longer good. Not sure what happened, but they're not cooking them long enough. I guess. Maybe it's a different mix. We had to wait 10 minutes to flag down our server to be able to pay the bill so we could go home.
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
This place was so good! It did not disappoint, from the cheese biscuits and the white sauce on the wings I just couldn't leave without it, so we bought a bottle of white sauce and a bag of the cheese biscuit mix! Everything was delicious! Service was great and great atmosphere! Quite a bit of people there so you know it's good, especially when they have a drive thru!!! Highly recommend!

Regina J.

Yelp
Food is always good with good prices and great servers. Jim and Nick's is always the spot to for a nice Bar B Q meal.
google avatar

Tyesha E.

Yelp
This place is just good. A particularly stressful situation compelled me to get takeout from Jim 'N Nick's because I knew the food would be amazing, great portions and I could eat it a couple days and the flavor would still be in tact. My absolute fav is the smoked turkey! And if I'm feeling adventurous I go for the smoked wings, yum! Boy was it ever! Since it's right off the highway, it was easy to grab quickly and the staff is friendly and fun to chat with!

Mackenzie R.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite places to eat bbq, however, that quickly changed. Every time we would go, the service was way below par. The last time we went, the server never came back to refill our drinks. When we finally got their attention and asked for a water refill, they took about 10 more minutes to come back. Once they did, they stopped to talk to someone in front of our table with the pitcher in hand and then walked away without addressing us or refilling the drinks. I think we maybe saw the server a total of 3 times throughout the meal (when took the order, refill incident, and to get the check). Very disappointing because their food is overall good. A little pricey for what it is but good nonetheless. Also, I order catering for my job and I ordered a dinner catering from them. I will never do that again. They called to confirm the order which I did appreciate. However, on the call, they repeatedly said "I don't think you know what you're doing" and were very insulting the whole call. They proceeded to confirm 3 more times from 3 different people. If you're looking for a good bbq meal, then go here. If you want good service or a little bit of respect, then I would stay far away from here.

J S.

Yelp
Went for lunch for the first time. Our server was awesome. Complimentary cheese biscuits were fantastic. We all got BBQ sandwiches. The portion of meat included I thought was kinda small considering the price with only one small side. Still a nice place with adequate BBQ. The Mac and cheese side was really tasty as well. Figure for lunch about $25 per person with tip. Not the best BBQ in Charlotte but still a nice place to try.
google avatar

Angelita R.

Yelp
The server at this location her name is Tasha she was so great she was very attending she was great love what we order we will be back to visit just because Tasha. The food we order was very good

Yelp
I enjoyed this BBQ restaurant. This Jim' Nick's is located near Concord's mall, which is a commercial area with lots of restaurants, stores and entertainment around. The restaurant is a stand-alone building with its own free parking lot. The menu offers quite a few options of barbeque meats and side orders. Their specialty is the little biscuits/buns, which are to die for. I have tried several items from the menu, and everything has been delicious. This time we went for the ribs, the brisque and barbeque chicken. Our experience was once again great! There is a full far, the common areas and general ambiance are pretty clean, comfortable, family friendly and the service is great. Overall, 100% recommended!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
People will often declare Jim N' Nick's the best or at least one of the best barbecue joints in the Charlotte area, and while I think there are some great options (despite what Charlotte pessimists would have you believe) I would be inclined to agree! It's been too long since I've been up here bust I still remember the last time I came in with my buddies after a round of golf. After bellying up to the bar we munched on some complimentary cornbread and sipped on some cold reasonably priced beer. I decided to go with the classic pulled pork, some onion rings, and I can't do barbecue without the Mac and cheese! All of it was delicious. If I lived closer to a location I would likely be there very often. When people tell you that the Charlotte area doesn't have good barbecue don't trust them, they are just being snobs. I've had barbecue all around the country and can confirm that Jim N Nicks is good stuff!
google avatar

Celeste D.

Yelp
This hidden gem hit the spot! I got the loaded baker with brisket and omg it was soooooo good!! The potato was HUGE!! I had leftovers and it was just as good as the first day. My service was excellent and they were so patient with me as I decided what I wanted lol. It's nice on the inside but I love the fact that they have a drive through

Samuel S.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to VA from NC. This was good BBQ with great service. Everything was good!

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic experience. Real authentic BBQ. Had the opportunity to try several menu items and was not disappointed.

Yelp
Delicious. The pulled chicken and pork were soft and seasoning was great. The collards were good too. Do not go if you're in a rush, they do not move fast.

Yelp
Went for a weekday lunch visit. The restaurant was not very busy so we were seated right away. Our server was fine (not rude, but especially friendly) but she was the only one serving during our visit. The dining room is very large and offers a mix of tables, booths, and high tops. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. First, the cheesy bread fell short. Nice presentation, poor taste. I tried the Carolina BBQ plate with Mac n cheese & baked beans. Not even the sauce could save the BBQ and the Mac n Cheese looked homemade but tasted boxed. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the baked beans. Everything is made fresh, but Nothing was hot. Mom enjoyed the baby back ribs. Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Wade A.

Yelp
This is our second time to eat here in the past month. The food was just as good as last time. Today I had marbled brisket sandwich and it was outstanding. Skip Texas Roadhouse next door. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I was visiting from out of state on a work trip and knew I had to have some local BBQ. I am so happy I chose this spot. They have a full service restaurant and bar and also a drive-thru. My meal was so tasty, I almost ate here twice during my short 3 days in the area. The BBQ was so tender and flavorful, and the salad was hearty. The stars of my order were the deviled eggs and the little cheesy cornbread muffins. These little cheesy muffins made me think of a combination of Red Lobster biscuits and Texas Roadhouse bread. They were so incredible.
google avatar

Melody W.

Yelp
My toddler was about to have a hunger induced meltdown when we arrived around lunchtime. The waitress had several parties she was waiting on who were ahead of us but clocked the angry kid so she brought us some rolls to tide us over. A godsend!! The food was delicious and we were in and out of the restaurant in less than 35 minutes with full bellies. Unheard of with a toddler.

Paula T.

Yelp
I got to looking at my "take out" receipt. I was charged $2.22 for a "packaging fee". I will never spend another cent at your establishment. You got me once!!!! I even left the lazy lady that took my order a $5 tip. I feel really taken.

Yelp
Loaded Potatoe #2 with Chicken Iced Tea Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage *6p drive through with 2 cars ahead took 45 minutes to get food *service was courteous & informative *however tea was weak & bland- server acknowledged same, replaced with carbonated drink that was more carbon than flavor-Sprite *#2 Potatoe was ok, not all that. 5 out of 10. * order was missing the sausage link in order bag *window server acknowledged that the entire order was in bag *called in & spoke with GM that advised refund $3 sausage & offer complimentary $3 sausage on next visit *advised my first visit on invitation of one of his managers and I don't live nearby. * advised comp is good for 30 days *Ambiance- parking lot traffic guy was courteous in directing traffic through the driveway around to drive thru. *appeared to be neat & clean Overall Rating so far 4 out of 10 Now I think I understand why my ten year old grand didn't favor going here but chose Texas Roadhouse instead. My opinion.

Yelp
Dining alone tonight so I sat down at the bar and was greeted with what would be friendly and attentive service for the reminder of my visit. Surprisingly the gratis corn muffins and my deviled egg app ended up being my faves of the night. My ribs were a little too chewy and my brisket a bit mushy. Greens were yummy because they have the required pepper vinegar. Beans could have been out of a can. Their excellent draft selection with the option of getting a tall, pushed my score to four stars. Will be back.
google avatar

Pj M.

Yelp
Excellent service and friendly staff. A group of 7 for lunch and they were not busy at all. Our server was helpful with suggestions as most of us had never been here before. I had the loaded potato with brisket burnt ends ...it was enough for two meals. Amazing, Tasty, hot and the meat was mouth watering. I will definitely go back. Sorry no pictures as it was a business luncheon and was not conducive for taking photos.

Yelp
Every thing about this place was amazing. The restaurant is clean, vibrant, not too loud, great atmosphere, music and food. The service was excellent, friendly staff and attentive manager. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
It's ok I was not thrilled by the place but for easy quick bbq it was ok. Again nothing to write home about.

Yelp
We tried it here based on recommendations. We popped in on a Tuesday night around 6:30 and was surprised there was a wait. It took a bit for them to seat us (2 ppl) but once out waitress came, she was super sweet. Ordered the pulled chicken chopped salad which was very good and the pulled chicken sandwich with mac and cheese and onion rings. The chicken on the sandwich was very pink which seemed odd, maybe just smoked dark meat? Nice portion sizes and good overall tasted great. They also give you a basket of free biscuits which was nice. Service was very slow but at least friendly! It was loud inside, lots of groups and it was really busy so to be expected. I wouldn't drive out of my way as I thought the menu was pricey, dinners were all $18+, but when in the area I would stop in again.
google avatar

Yelp
Before stepping foot in an actual restaurant, I've had Jim 'N Nick's several times at work. I've alleys enjoyed the bbq and was excited to have a location not too far from home. I've been here a couple of times and really enjoyed the bbq as much as in the past. They make ordering really easy too. I didn't see the side option I wanted online so I called and they took my order, no problem. When I arrived 15 minutes later it was ready, so I paid and was on my way. As you can imagine, it smells great inside. There's also plenty of seating and plenty of staff, which is hard to come by these days. Cannot wait to return.

John N.

Yelp
This has been one of my faves for 2 decades. Although I have to admit there's a diffeeence between the Tennessee version and the Carolina version, it still stands as a really good eatery. If you haven't been you need to go.

Yelp
Came here in February on a work trip and loved it all! Came back tonight with my family on our way to Orlando, and it did not disappoint again! Food was amazing, service was great, and we had just missed the dinner rush. Restaurant was clean and not overly busy, which made for quick service and a nice setting. Will always come back when I am in the Concord Mills area!!

Yelp
Friendly staff and a very clean restaurant, l but the main thing is the amazing food. This is really good barbecue and the honey habanero wings are to die for. It's also very very economically priced. I was surprised how much value for money you get from this place. Come here you won't be disappointed I have to say the vinegar dip is amazing

Yelp
Excellent bbq. Really enjoyed smoked turkey sandwich. White sauce was great with just enough kick. Will definitely come back.
