I got here at 11:30 on a Wednesday and there were only two other patrons in the restaurant...not a great sign for a lunch crowd.
I hadn't been to Jimboy's anywhere for about three years. I hadn't been to this location since I was in grad school about seven years ago. I ordered a classic beef, refried bean, and chicken taco, planning to share takeout with my sibkid who had never had Jimboy's. I also ordered an enchilada plate with refried beans, rice, and salad for $20 total on the app.
A great Jimboy's taco is special. It's a Sacramento classic. Ground beef, shredded lettuce, Parmesan crusted griddled corn tortilla, and American cheese. Sounds weird but as I said it can be sublime. A bad Jimboy's taco is greasy and the grease seems like it might be a few years old. Unfortunately today's
Selections to a one was a collection of sad and greasy tacos. The salsa is still fire, though, but good salsa can't save a bad taco.
I took a bite of the chicken and noted it's not shredded anymore, it's that pre-grilled slice like Taco Bell has. That's really sad because Jimboy's had great shredded chicken in the past, but times change and costs increase, I get it.
Everything being said, I wasn't up for more grease so I opted to not try the enchilada or sides, as I had chosen chicken which was also "grilled."
As I tried to get one more bite of taco down, a guy came close to my car and made eye contact and started taking off his clothes. When he started to fiddle with the waistband of his shorts, I put the car in reverse asap. Franklin Blvd isn't the best neighborhood, but ok yeah that was a bit much.
The ladies who worked here were kind and the restaurant itself was spotless. Definitely with a couple stars. The restrooms are likewise spotless for customers and you can ask for a token from the front to access. A good plan based on what was happening outside.
Overall I won't be coming back as it looks like the chain has declined over the years, but I'll remember with fondness those great early days of classic tacos. You would be much better going to El
Novillero down the street and ordering takeout beans, rice, and enchilada for $15.
