8 Best Hot Dog Spots in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"With two locations, in North and South Durham, chances are anytime you’re craving a hot dog, you’re not too far from a Jimmy’s. Have your hot dog with ketchup and mustard for $2.09 or go “all the way,” piling on chili, slaw, onions, and mustard for $2.59. Plus, you have your pick of beef, turkey, or pork. Jimmy’s nails the classic hot dog. The dog is expertly grilled, and the bun is toasted. As a bonus, classic toppings like coleslaw and pickled jalapenos are free. And, if you’re not in the mood for a sausage, don’t sleep on Jimmy’s fried catfish with an extra crispy coating or the homemade banana pudding loaded with fresh bananas and vanilla wafers. The space itself feels like a time capsule. Black-and-white photos of Durham streets and sports stars adorn the walls, lending the place a nostalgic energy that feels older than it is, like a local institution that has been open for years, perhaps even decades." - Gabi Mendick

Today, our family enjoyed a delicious meal at Jimmy's. We feasted on a variety of options, including juicy burgers cooked to order, classic hot dogs, and flavorful catfish fillets. The catfish was particularly light and flavorful, and we enjoyed it alongside a side of crispy fries. To top it off, we couldn't resist the irresistible banana pudding – a true highlight of the meal. Jimmy's is a Durham institution, and it consistently delivers on quality food. We highly recommend it!

Google
Although the food is somewhat cheaper than competitors, the taste is quite underwhelming. The burger has an odd sweet/ashy flavor, not sure if it’s coming from the bun or the meat, but I couldn’t finish it. The hot dog was an odd orange color that put me off after the first bite. The only thing I kind of enjoyed was the onion rings and the corn dog. The overall atmosphere of the establishment was exactly what you’d expect, older, kind of dirty and dingy. The workers were very nice, but I shouldn’t see a worker rubbing her mouth/nose with her hand and then proceeding to use that same hand to touch the bread that is toasting on the cooktop.

Google
A delightful "locals only" burger and hot dog joint. The food is always fresh and the staff is always friendly. Locally made pie and banana pudding you can't get anywhere else. Great for kids and elders, all people welcome! Bottle of ketchup on every table, iykyk. The Texas Toast Patty Melt is to die for.

Google
The food and prices here are unbeatable! I’ve been here several times now and have never been disappointed with the food (which is diner/ grease joint style, so if that’s not your thing, then this review isn’t for you). Highlights: the fried catfish is, no lie, the BEST fried catfish I’ve ever had. The banana pudding is so good (this coming from a super picky banana pudding addict). The banana pudding milkshake is truly next level, they use the banana pudding to make the milkshake. Lemonade - their lemonade is homemade and it’s amazing. I have to give this place 5 stars for all of that. The only (somewhat) negative about this place is the young guy with dreads who is often working the counter. He’s usually just really indifferent, which is fine. But occasionally I think he be sucking on those lemons instead of lemonade, and is in a bad mood even when you’re trying to be super friendly back, which dampens the vibe. Overall, though, Jimmys is a heavy hitter; the type of joint you go to when you need the prices to be affordable, the food to be artery-clogging goodness, and the atmosphere to be “get me in and out” casual.

Google
Absolutely disgusted by my visit to Jimmy’s Famous Hot Dogs today. The lady cook behind the counter wasn’t wearing gloves while handling food, touching buns, working the grill, handling cooking utensils and equipment, then going right back to touching food again without ever washing her hands. I watched her make two other meals before mine and not once did she wash up. It was a blatant case of cross-contamination, and it’s unacceptable. As for the food itself? Tasteless. The hot dog had zero flavor aside from purely tasting mustard, and the fries were just as bad, no seasoning, no salt, and definitely no care put into them. The fryer was visibly coated in old grease stains that clearly weren’t from just today. If that’s what’s on the surface, I can only imagine what’s lurking underneath. I won’t be back. And if you care about cleanliness or flavor, I’d strongly recommend staying away too

Google
I go here once a year when I have to attend Duke for medical reasons. I always stop here. The hot dogs and fries are on point every time. The full Jimmy all the way is the best. The lemonade is amazing. Stop in and enjoy.

Google
If you love a good hotdog such as myself... this is the place for you to try. The line was long but that's expected at a restaurant with tasty food. The workers did get everyone through the line in a timely manner. The hotdog was good and juicy with a soft bun nothing to fancy. The chilli on it made it standout from any other hotdog I ever had! The chicken wings was perfect size, fresh, crispy, and seasoning was not over powering. The dining area is on the small size and have a old fashion look to it but it was clean. Food was great, nice staff, and clean dining area. I would recommend this place you will not be disappointed.

Google
Jimmy's catered our BIG 400 person race this past week, and it was wonderful! They got all the fixin's, and thought of everything. Pricing and quality was great! They made it so easy for me to order, pick up and EAT!! WOO! Thank you!
google avatar

Carlos J.

Yelp
This is the best fried fish place that also serve amazing chicken wings and legs and will serve you a cannot beat it. North Cadillacy at Durham NC cheeseburger. Oh, and yes, they have some crazy milkshakes. In

Yelp
First time eating here and sadly may be my last. Store in Durham and I live about 1 hrs away . The food oh so good with everyone being oh so nice. Just wished they offer other kind of fish besides just cat fish, my dad ranted and raved how great it was. My burger and pudding was great so I didn't expect anything less. Bathroom nice and clean. If I am ever in the area again I am stopping by!!
google avatar

Shirley K.

Yelp
Like I enjoyed the hot dogs - in the past I bought the banana pudding, it is good as well
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
First, best hotdog in Durham! This is not a complaint but a suggestion.... I understand the hotdog comes out quicker than a sandwich would but don't put the sandwich on top of the hotdog. This will not stop me from coming back or recommending your place of business. Mistakes happen ‍ I was told the wings were good.. but did not get a chance to try because they were devoured! Catfish sandwich is also amazing! Don't sleep on this place y'all!
google avatar

Sierra H.

Yelp
A great local spot I come to every time I am back home. The burger and banana pudding are always great

Laquisha H.

Yelp
Food looks horrible. Ordered hot wings and 2 hotdogs hotdogs were dry and cold. Chicken wings look old. Will never go here again

Scott B.

Yelp
Pretty good chili dog and burger. Not mind blowing, but good none the less. Good price for a combo. Next time I want to try the banana pudding.
google avatar

Shimer G.

Yelp
This place has incredible food. Probably one of the best hotdogs in the triangle area. Durham, why didn't you tell me about your little secret?
google avatar

Paula L.

Yelp
Good hot dog joint. Plain ole hot dog and fries. Nothing fancy, but sometimes that's exactly what you want.
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
This place has some AMAZING catfish!! We usually stop there before we visit our family and pick up a few pans. It's hot, fresh, and delicious. The lady actually remembered us, so it's becoming a habit. Great with breakfast the next day!
google avatar

Yelp
As usual I'm on the road again so I have my granddaughter with me and we are starving!! We jump off the exit and KFC ,Popeyes ,Wendy's are surrounding me...NO NO NO so I spot this little place and Hit up Yelp and pull up I get a Turkey dog and a Beef with chili Cole slaw mustard... I mean it was ok the bun was a little stale the chili was kinda bland but I would go back !! I also got a cheese burger for my dog and I tasted it and it was good not great but anything is better than McDonalds Wendy's and KFC
google avatar

Tricia G.

Yelp
I love this spot. The first time I had their jumbo Nathan's hot dog it was perfectly cooked- a slightly crispy skin for a great bite. Great flavor! The burger is solid. I've had it with tomato and lettuce and also Carolina style. I prefer it with the slaw and chili. Chili itself is nicely seasoned and beefy and pairs well with the burger without overpowering the beef burger. The fountain drinks are great. I only get a Cola when I order from Jimmy's. I highly recommend this great mainstay for burgers, Nathan's dogs and crispy crinkle fries. Fountain drinks are perfectly balanced too.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
I love this place. Great food and the workers are always very friendly. Yesterday I got turkey dogs 'all the way' and a side of Mac n cheese. I also love the hotdog statue inside, always have to get a photo with him!

Lakeshia L.

Yelp
Food was absolutely nasty. We got 4 hotdogs all the way and 2 with mustard, Chilli and onions. Instead we got 4 with mustard, chilli, and onion. Cold and fries tasted like rubber omg thirty dollars gone. I do not recommend Jimmy's

Ashly G.

Yelp
I like the food, but was just put off by an employee (whose name I won't say on a public forum) who answered the phone to take my order. I have been to other Jimmy's location and this would have been my first time ordering here. I started with asking to place an order and then asked 2 questions about pricing and portion of food. The employee then cut me off and said "are you going to order food or ask questions?" The person tried to clean it up by saying feel free to give them a call back when I knew what I wanted as though they were being accommodating and friendly. I quickly decided not to patronize the restaurant at that point.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
I've had Jimmy's before and it was delicious but this time, it was awful! The hot dogs were not hot and it didn't taste like a Nathan's beef hotdog. It did not seem fresh at all. It even had a greasy taste. The buns were hard. I am so disappointed it was a waste of money today. I think it definitively depends on the day and time of day to get a good hot dog. I'll give it a try once more.
google avatar

Ava G.

Yelp
After reading the reviews of my fellow Yelpers I went on a bad day. Fries were mixed with fresh and very old. The buns were falling apart which usually means old. I was super excited because it's hard to find beef dogs in a "red hot dog" state also I didn't make it home before I had to pull off (yes for that). We also tried banana pudding. This maybe decent if it's late night and you've had drinks and just need food.

Yelp
I had to update my review after seeing all of the relatively recent reviews knocking the place. It sounds like a lot of picky people that are expecting bougie, gourmet burgers or just the kind of people that like to complain. Jimmy's is a basic hotdogs and hamburgers place. Take it for what it is. It has a cult following of people who don't use sites like yelp and they LOVE it, and that's what keeps this place in business. I get a hankerin' for some salty, greasy, good ol' American food every once in a while and I come here. I personally love the hotdogs and get them with chili, ketchup, mustard, and heavy onions, and the occasional pickle or two - yeah, I know, it's kind of weird but don't knock it until you try it! I also enjoy the chili cheese fries with lots of ketchup. On occasion, we'll get the fried fish, which is tasty. I also saw a review commenting on the fountain sodas being bad, but they must be talking about a different Jimmy's because the fountain sodas here hit hard and are delicious. The restaurant has always been clean every time I've been in and I've always enjoyed eating with the mom and pop diner atmosphere. The staff are super courteous and I've always felt like they go out of their way to try and take care of any specific things I ask for. The only bad things I would have to say about Jimmy's is that it can be slow because they make everything to order and they still don't have a great order-ahead experience. You have to call in and can be put on wait forever. Other than that, though, there's nothing to complain about if you know what you're going there for. You'll never be happy drinking water when you were expecting a sprite.

Yelp
My first time there I've got the hotdogs and fries nice amount to they were just right the food looked wonderful the place was really busy everybody was so nice and friendly the dining room needed a little attention but reminding you the place was really busy
google avatar

Yelp
I love the cheese burger with Carolina style and onion rings and my sweet tea! You have to Catfish dinner plate and Jimmy hotdogs with everything is the best!

Yelp
"Greasy spoon/ fast food just north of I-85 on Guess Rd in Durham" Tried this place for lunch on a Saturday. I got the catfish sandwich combo, spouse got the chicken tenders, daughter had the burger, and son had the hot dog combo. Positives: + Service. Very friendly. Definitely remembered many of the patrons as they entered and what they liked. + Price. Definitely an inexpensive lunch place. The catfish sandwich combo was just shy of $6 (before tax and tip). Kids meals were under $5. + Catfish. It was pretty good-- cut thin and flavorful. + Bread pudding. They have lots of little tupperwares of it at the counter, and they're delicious. Son described it as "everything you want in pudding", and it had big chunks of banana and nice flavor. Neutral: +/- Burger. About like a CookOut burger-- better than a cafeteria patty, but nothing to write home about. +/- Hot dog. Pretty good but not unusually good (as one might expect given the name). +/- Chicken tenders. Tasted OK, but had an unusually thick and unseasoned breading. +/- Lemonade. Good lemon but WAY sweet. Negatives: - Fries. Wow, those were terrible. Tried putting ketchup to mask the taste, but the ketchup on the tables also tasted weird too. None of us finished our fries-- we threw them out despite still being a bit hungry. - Cash only (no credit cards accepted). Not sure if this was a one-time thing or regular. There is an ATM in the store, so one can work around it, but that's definitely an inconvenience. Synopsis: OK for the low price. Probably not a place I'd rush back to, but I'd be good with getting catfish again as well as the bread pudding. 2-3 star border, but I'll be generous and round up.

Yelp
I can't front on this place the hot dogs are good. The chili is good the slaw is good. I've never ordered the fish or chicken wings but I might if I go back. The only f*cked up part is the weird "don't tread on me" sign and the American flags everywhere... if you can see past the American apologia though, I'd recommend the place.
google avatar

Yelp
Jimmys is a great place to bring the kids. Dont go in expecting some fancy new trend. This is your upgraded school lunch basic burger and fries joint, And they do it well. Fast and freindly and the burgers and dogs are good.

Dorothy T.

Yelp
The hot dog I ordered 2 weeks ago was disappointing. Ut was the scrawniest wiener I have ever seen and totally tasteless in and of itself. Supermarket dogs are juicier and thicker. I hope it was just a fluke because the dogs have been good in the past.
google avatar

Karl K.

Yelp
A star rating of 3.5 stars is not all that great. And it's about right for this place. There's just not much to get excited about here. At least not as far as the hot dogs are concerned. The name is Jimmy's Famous Hot Dogs, so I ordered a couple of them all the way. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about the dog was decidedly average. The wiener, the slaw, the chili: average, average, average. I guess I could've upgraded to the Nathan's all beef wiener for a dollar more, but I shouldn't have to. Your regular wiener should be able to impress if you are famous. The woman who took my order was very nice. The one calling out order numbers not so much--she had the personality and enthusiasm of a TSA agent. The floor was shockingly dirty. I guess they could have had a run of construction workers through earlier, but this looked like more of a buildup to me. Fred B reviewed this place and correctly stated that they do "make a decent chili dog here, though it might not be so good as to be famous". Well said. I don't think I can improve upon that.
google avatar

Fred B.

Yelp
They do make a decent chili dog here, though it might not be so good as to be famous, at least not yet. The chili is a dry and meaty with some nice flavor. The wiener is solid, but not an all beef one. These are smallish dogs, much the same as Zack's in Burlington - it seems both the bun and the wiener have been downsized. Growing trend I guess - first time I noticed it was in NYC, Gray's Papaya & Papaya King both went this route to hold the price. They offer a 2 dog/FF/Drink combo for $5.74. FF are only ok, the ridged kind, though they at least get them crispy here. The hamburger is also on the smallish side, but with some nice flavor. Unfortunately, the bun was somewhat stale which took away. The slaw here has carrott in it which makes it rather sweet, at least for my taste. All in all,I'd come back for the Chili Dog, minus the slaw - and I'll take another shot on the burger. Prices are very, very good. Service is fast food style - order at the counter, fill your drink, pickup your order when called. These folks are quick.

Yelp
Great hotdogs! Finally found a dog reminiscent of the ones I grew up with from downtown Sharon, PA, the kind U remember having with my dad. Don't waste any money on the macaroni and cheese though. Nothing but orange, unflavored sauce. Was really gross but the dogs are TOP DOG and the service is excellent. Definitely an old place, but there's a lot of history there so it's fine.

Ty H.

Yelp
First time eating here...the food was good. My only issue is I stressed no onions repeatedly to the cashier and still received onions, not the cooks fault they followed the order. All in all I'll eat here again and next time I will probably be more anal about the onions since it was ignored the first time.

Lacy K.

Yelp
Nothing Famous about the hotdogs at all ( maybe how greasy they are) Fountain Drink machine has horrible taste for all drinks. Sit down to eat and ants were running around on the table. Looked around noticed none of the tables were cleaned or disinfected. Checked my bill because it seemed very high for the prices that were advertised. Be aware that they charge an additional UNADVERTISED 5% to every order paid for with a Credit Card!
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
Found this great place by accident! Close to Durham Historic Athletic Park and Durham Bulls Park! Here you can get Hotdogs Hamburgers Fried Chicken & Catfish! Like an old time diner but better!!! Friendly staff and good food!
google avatar

Danny B.

Yelp
A terrible experience. I could not eat my hotdog. It was greasy and the chili tasted like it's out of a can. I also had wings and they were horrible. Even the beverages in this restaurant are bad the diet Coke was terrible. So I tried Fanta and it was terrible. Then I tried unsweetened tea and it was awful. I cannot say anything good about this restaurant and I would never eat there again.
google avatar

April H.

Yelp
Accidentally stumbled on this place as we were headed to my hometown Belmont NC. Both the food and service was amazing. True southern hospitality. P.S .Word of advice:The bathroom needs alot of attention( small and smelly).
google avatar

Barry B.

Yelp
Been coming here for a while and just now posting pics of my fish plate ‍ I know I can do better but better late than never right? Lol outside of their hotdogs which are pretty good! the fried fish is slamming definitely worth checking out to try some southern little meals.
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
This is a very busy place at high noon. Parking is tough at the rush hour. Today, this place was packed with Baby-boomers, which sort of tells the story of this classic 'joint'. Hamburgers and hot dogs are good. Crinkle-cut fries are standard fare. I love the quirky 1960's [mostly] photos and decor. This is a fun place, and a bargain, but not a foodie destination. Banana pudding is a treat and something I never expected. The goofy hot dog on the corner is brilliant and nearly worth an extra star in the rating. Go if you want a good cheap hot dog or hamburger. Avoid is you're an OCD clean freak.
google avatar

Catrissa G.

Yelp
My husband & I went there for wings and after placing my order I was very disturbed after witnessing the gentleman go over to the cooler & take cooked wings out & placed them in the fryer with his bare hands I got up & left I will never go back I think the health dept need to pay them a visit
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
Not sure what is up with all teh haters. I quite like a "Carolina Dog" (chili, slaw, mustard), and these guys did it perfectly, best I've had in NC. Everything was made to order. It was cheap. The people were nice.
google avatar

Shaun B.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Being from Johnston county, I specifically asked if they served Carolina Packers Bright Leaf hotdogs. They said they did. They don't. They serve Curtis hot dogs, which are now manufactured by Carolina Packers at one of their facilities. There is a HUGE difference. What is so disappointing is that I know that the owners know the difference. They are passing off a cheaper option as something that it is not. I have no tolerance for this type of deception. If they had been honest with me I still would have had lunch there, with out the expectation. This place does not deserve my business and will never get it again.
google avatar

Carl C.

Yelp
Decent burgers and hotdogs, fries are not that great. Banana Pudding is pretty Gucci. Go with the Nathan's option for the hotdogs for a little more. Great spot for a quick bite.
google avatar

Leigh H.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place. It is very close to my house. If it had been good we would have become regulars. Sadly, this was not the case. As others have said, Jimmy's has hot dogs, chili, burgers, and wings. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and cheese fries. My husband ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings. The size of the meals was fine. I liked that the burger was not overwhelmingly huge. I ate it all and did not feel like I had overeaten. However, the burger itself was not good. It was pretty tasteless. The bacon was paltry. You almost had to squint to see it. On the plus side, my husband noted that the lettuce and tomato on his burger were very fresh. The french fries were nothing extraordinary or even medicore. They were just frozen fries that you could buy at Harris Teeter and make yourself. Their idea of cheese fries is to add yellow "cheese" sauce on top. The onion rings, also frozen, were much better. They were the best thing we had there. They were nice and crispy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Everyone that worked there was smiling and in a good mood. The friendless of the staff is why I rated this a two and not a one. The food itself should be given one star.
google avatar

Yelp
Didn't expect it but, Jimmy's Famous Hot Dogs was simply cool. It was a remarkable experience. OMG, their Turkey Dog was absolutely delightful, such a superb dish with amazing flavors. First of all, the service was awesome. Jimmy's Famous Hot Dogs - So good!
google avatar

Sheenah K.

Yelp
ORDER THE CATFISH MEAL! Sooooo goooood!!!! And I'm extra picky about my fish and chips!! :-) What a delight to find this by our hotel.

Dennis W.

Yelp
I live 2 miles from this restaurant in Roxboro, NC and got good service with the drive through window with a few hamburger and a hot dog visits on a few occasions, but....... My third experience is what's getting them this DESERVED REVIEW. I got the chicken wings order, just wings and they came with hot sauce already on them and I thought wow, that is different then they advertise? Well, they tasted like BLEACH.... So they had some old, expired chicken wings that they tried to clean with BLEACH, and then they put hot sauce on them to disguise the taste of green chicken wings. I thought it was peculiar that it took them 20+ minutes to make the order? ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!
google avatar

Cameron G.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall hotdog/hamburger place. To update some people's reviews; they now take cards! They also have free WiFi.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
My wife and I got their #4 combo with their Burger, hotdog, and fries. My son got a burger and small mac n cheese. The patties are small, but are decent. Fries didn't taste like the center was done all the way. Also my son's mac n cheese was not warm, or even room temperature. Disappointed because this place just opened up in Hillsborough and there was a lot of hype around it. I'll try again in a couple of months and see if they improve.
google avatar

Jeri T.

Yelp
I still have yet to decide on a star rating and will come back to that. I ordered"world famous" Mac and Cheese which was adequate. Barely. It was shells macaroni. These cheese - meh. I also got a hot dog without slaw. Maybe I should have gotten slaw. The shriveled dog had seen better days for sure and was snugly hidden beneath chili? and that slice of cheese. Tea was good. Maybe I could just say, don't go there close to closing time. And TAKE CASH!!!
google avatar

Peggy B.

Yelp
I frequent Jimmy's Famous Hotdogs. Drive-thru only located on hwy55. Today I got a fish sandwich for the first time! When I tell you it was good; It was off the charts!! I asked for lettuce tomato xtra mayo. The sandwich was hot and delicious. It is one of the best fish sandwiches I've had from a restaurant. Thank you and keep up the great taste!!!

Ken S.

Yelp
As l have written before Jimmy's has the real honest-to-God North Carolina hot dogs - very hard to find anymore. Meat chili, cole slaw, mustard and raw chopped onions: there is no better way to eat a dog than that! The same combo works on their great hamburgers as well. Oh ye visiting yankees, you're about to forget sauerkraut forever when you taste the way a proper weenie should taste! And finish it off with real banana pudding with REAL BANANAS in it. It doesn't get betterthan this! And it is no longer cash only. They now take charge cards. A Must Taste for visitors. A treasured Mecca of Tar Heel traditional cuisine for Durm-ites.
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
Best banana pudding I've ever had. Truly just amazing. Absolutely stellar. I could continue with adjectives about the banana pudding, but I suspect you get the idea. 100/5 stars. The rest of the food was, honestly, crap. I had a burger and fries, my dad got a fish sandwich, my mom got chicken tenders, and my brother got a hot dog. All of us agreed, the food sucked. The fries were clearly frozen and reheated, the ketchup tasted weird?? It had been sitting by a sunny window, so it might have spoiled a little? The burger bun was not warm, and the patty was tasteless. We all agreed, all of the main food was just honestly terrible. The service was perfectly friendly, but we knew the woman from when she worked at Spartacus before they closed, so it's possible everyone else is rude or terrible. All in all, do not eat here if you want a meal. Eat here for banana pudding. Nothing else.

Christian T.

Yelp
Man, where do I start? This place has the absolute BEST hotdogs! I eat here a few times a week and I get a footlong hotdog combo with a sweet tea ( which is to die for) I highly recommend checking them out if you're in the area!
