We decided to try Jim's after hearing raves from a number of McKinney natives. We arrived right at 5:25 (actually a couple minutes before start time for the buffet), and most of the pizza offerings on the buffet were already gone. The buffet offers salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, toast (possibly garlic), lasagne (I believe that's only on Fridays and Saturdays) and about 4-5 choices of pizza. They had pepperoni, cheese, sausage, and a "deluxe" version that had pepperoni, sausage, peppers, olives and onions, and a "dessert pizza". To their credit, they did restock pizza on the buffet fairly regularly, so we were able to sample each. There was only one server on duty, so I ended up just getting my drink refills myself. As for the food:
- The pizza wasn't too bad, but to be honest I've had better. Being an extremely thin (like cracker-thin) crust, I think it's easy to overcook, and sitting on the buffet dries it out even more. Maybe extra thin crust just isn't my thing.
- The spaghetti was also kinda dry, sitting in a pan. They might want to consider leaving it in water, or at least sprinkling a little water on it from time to time. The marinara meat sauce was actually pretty good, but the dry spaghetti diminished the taste.
- I thought the lasagna was actually better than what I've had at places like Olive Garden. It had a real homemade taste to it, and endures well sitting in a pan on the buffet.
- My wife tried the dessert pizza and was a little disappointed. It's basically crust with butter and sugar. Some cinnamon would've helped the taste.
Summary: we enjoyed the fact that it was a buffet, and got to enjoy several varieties of pizza and pasta in one sitting. Not the greatest as some people have commented, but not terrible. Definitely try the lasagna! We'll probably be back when we get a hankerin' for a variety of pizzas.
