James Beard Foundation Adds 5 Restaurants to Its America’s Classics List - AFAR

"The spaghetti part of Jim’s Steak & Spaghetti House became the main focus of this establishment ever since a local Italian immigrant gave founder Jim Tweel his recipe and told him to open a spaghetti house in 1945. Now run by his three children, this establishment also draws crowds for its strawberry pie that is only sold for one week each year for Mother’s Day." - Lyndsey Matthews

Good eats, cheap. Great atmosphere, like going back in time to the 60's - they still have a lunch counter. Clean, comfortable, pleasant decor.

Google
Great historical place to mingle with the locals Ribeye Spaghetti Ravioli Salad Garlic Bread French fries Pie Excellent service!!!

The atmosphere takes you back in time to a 1970s American dinner. The portions are generous. The food was delicious. The dessert (I had banana cream pie) was not only visually appetizing, but prepared from scratch to perfection. Our server (Merideth) was not only knowledgeable about the menu, she also made the experience like having dinner at an old friend's house. She was warm, inviting, friendly, and continously checked in to make sure we were satisfied. 5/5 absolutely recommend.

If you are EVER in the area you have to check out Jim's. It's so authentic and feels as though you have been transported back a few decades (at least). The place provides ample food at reasonable prices. The service was spot on and the atmosphere harkens back to a much simpler time. Parking is available is a garage right next door and it's the cheapest parking you are ever going to find. I had the 50/50 spaghetti and ravioli. Was it the best I have ever had? Absolutely not. Was it good in it's own way and worth every penny? Absolutely was. Our total bill (dinner for two and NA beverages- $30.00 - adding parking made it.......31.00!!!! While in town take a ride down the same street to pay homage at the Memorial Fountain on campus. It is a moving experience Don't sleep on Huntington as an overnight stop during your vacation. You will be glad you stopped by

Google
Casual, historic Italian restaurant in a vibrant part of town. The food is fresh and well-made, we’re coming back just for the garlic bread 🤣. I’d recommend this spot for the history and vibe!

Google
Came here because of all the good reviews.. "tastes amazing!" "Perfect service!" And yet when we came to the restaurant itself, we were met with a sad place of bland spaghetti and a few crinkle cut French fries. You know the experience sucked when the best things you had we a coke and crackers. The service was very kind and welcoming though. But the experience wasn't as good as people say. This place is so glazed. (overhyped). Chocolate pie was crunchy and just as bland as the spaghetti, [it is] the worst spaghetti house I've ever been at. This was my opinion and everyone has their own taste but I was not thrilled with the food! It was cheap though so... do with that as you will

First and last time! 4 adults, 4 different meals and all tried each others. Mom got ravioli w/meat sause and salad. It did not look appealing. First bite, started gaging! I about died. Was so embarrassing. I really thought she was going to hurl! I took it away from her and traded plates with my daughter who almost got the ravioli, but wanted for us all to try something different and sample, so she traded her cheese burger. My daughter said they'd be better off serving Chef Boyardee! I told them they were being dramatic, until I took a bite! I could not have taken another bite and apologized for calling them dramatic. All I could think of was dogfood. The burger was a flat sandwich on bread but mom was able to get it down. Steak sand was a joke! Chocolate pie... worst ever! How can you mess that up?? They did! Bland!! Horrible and way too sweet coleslaw. Seriously sweeter than the pie! Bland ribeye! Green beans, like poured from can. The waitress was as nice as could be, but forgot my sons spaghetti and my moms roll which mom said don't remind her. I don't even want to try it. The place was clean, atmosphere was wonderful. Place was packed! Why?? We go out once a week and all agree..worst food that we have ever had! Gross!

Google
I've always loved this place since I was a little girl. The food was ok. Maybe I was having an off day. They were very busy on a Saturday afternoon. There were 5 of us in our party. I think it wasn't what I was feeling for lunch that day. My only complaint is they never put enough sauce for the noodles they give out.

Yelp
A classic iconic gem. I love to get the sauce for takeout it freezes well and since I live about 45 minutes away it makes it easy to have on hand.

Yelp
Service: amazing! Ambiance: very pleasant and clean. Food: I tried their spaghetti and in my opinion I didn't like it but then I tried their steak and their banana pie and it was good! The steak they have a nice outer crust and when you cut into it it's juicy and tender just the way I like it. When I tried their steak pie it was amazing because you eat it and the second you eat it all that flavor just BURSTS out into your mouth basically like a banana pudding pie. I would recommend this place for anybody it is amazing service is nice and just a great place to have a good time with friends. Bon appetite

S C.

Yelp
We love Jim's for their fish. Today we discovered their bread pudding! It's a new item. Our waitress Christy (who was amazing) suggested it. It was her grandmother's recipe. We've had bread pudding in a lot of restaurants but I have to say this was absolutely the BEST we've ever had! Do yourself a favor and order it the next time you are at Jim's!

Yelp
Having dinner at one of my all time favorite places!!! Best spaghetti in the Huntington WVA. area!! Great food, great service!! Never disappointed!!

Yelp
A very busy place at lunch time. This is our second time here and it hasn't changed in the two years. The food was good. I really like the place, everyone seems friendly. It is clean and decorated very nice. I would probably eat here more often, if not for parking. I will return .

Yelp
Ok a couple of things.... I'm just a traveling hillbilly from the bluegrass state. 1) The Staff was out standing! Great people, super nice. They even sat my teenager at the JFK booth. That was pretty dang cool! Not many places have something that cool! A true part of history! Ironically it's next to the Republican Headquarters and MAGA HQ 2) They name to me is a little misleading. I was expecting something like a "Demo's" in Nashville. They had 1 cut of steak. That's it 1 cut, and that cut was nothing special. In all honesty it was bad. I have made thousands of ones better with stuff at Food Lion or Winn Dixie. I know it's not fine dining but it's not even good diner. The Spaghetti was nothing crazy.... It was what it was. The breads we out of a loaf you get out of Hiners bag. The prices were fair. Oh and they have there own parking garage it cost $1.50 what can you get for $1.50 these days

John D.

Yelp
Just an average one time experience. Wanted to go there since the early 80's and wasn't really impressed.
google avatar

Tom W.

Yelp
We had heard about this diner for decades and all the raves. Our first and only visit was mediocre. The servers were nice. The facility was clean. The food was just average. The sauce is rather bland. They served slices of bread rather than rolls. We were just rather surprised that folks applaud this restaurant but found it to be ho hum. We have not returned.

Yelp
I don't get to Huntington often enough, but every time I do, I try to eat here. I always have a medium plate of spaghetti with hot rolls and coleslaw. The spaghetti was awesome; I don't know how they do it. This time, I started with a bowl of chili. OMG. For dessert, I chose their once every 6 weeks carrot cake. Give. Me. A. Break. Unreal delicious. This place isn't fancy. But the food is awesome and always served steaming hot, the staff is friendly, and the prices cannot be beat. Highly recommend.

Mike F.

Yelp
A Huntington classic. The food and service are always great. New owner has kept all the classic goodness intact. You need to try it!

Kathy B.

Yelp
Simpley good food at a good price. Love their coleslaw pasta and rye bread. I've enjoyed the place for over 46 years
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
It's a cool place, nostalgic. I really wanted to love it, given its history, but it was frankly terrible. The sauce it's self was okay, but the ravioli and spaghetti were so overcooked they were mushy. The meat ravioli literally had no taste, almost inedible. My husband's sandwich, which was a "steak" sandwich, was a skinny meat patty with lettuce tomato and mayo. I was so disappointed. Definitely won't go back. I gave it 2 stars for the nostalgia and atmosphere. Service was good.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
This is one of those wacky time capsule sort of places on the James Beard Classics list, that you walk into and think "no way the food here is amazing." And you'd be wrong. I can't speak for other dishes but I could eat that Spaghetti weekly for the rest of my life. Now it isn't NY Italian delicious, but probably the best spaghetti I've had outside New York or San Francisco. Also the food is super cheap. If you are within an hour of this place, go.

Laban Y.

Yelp
Traditional dining venue in Huntington. Been in business for many years with an ambiance of a diner from the 50's. Open for lunch and dinner with their delicious trademark of spaghetti. Fried fish is also a popular option. We visit weekly!
google avatar

Rodney H.

Yelp
The so called "World famous spaghetti " , absolutely was lousy, barely eatable. You know it's bad when your waitress no tells you not to get the marinara sauce because it's not home made like their meat sauce. When the Chef boy-r-Dee meat sauce is better than theirs!!! I would not recommend the spaghetti!! Matter of fact,...... Hardings restaurant in Mink Shoals spaghetti dominates Jim's spaghetti!! (Mic drop)!!!
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Fish sandwiches are amazing and so is the spaghetti. I always get a quart of meat sauce and keep in the freezer. Makes dinner wick , easy and good!
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Passing thru and looked at reviews for dinner. Jim's got decent reviews so my wife and I tried it. This place is awesome! I can't think of one negative thing to say. This is a professional restaurant. It runs like a Swiss watch, perfect! The service is spot on, the ambience is good. The salad was fresh and delicious. No frills, lettuce, tomato and dressing. We had the cream of chicken with wild rice soup, also delicious. Spaghetti with meat sauce, if you guessed delicious, you're wrong! It was EXTRA delicious! The rolls and bread.....yep! We live in Pittsburgh, about 4 hours away, but will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is timeless! It's almost like stepping in to your grandma's kitchen in 1963...and I mean that in the best way possible. We were sent here by a stranger we met on the plane. Mr. Bradley Tweel and his staff (especially our server Mandy) welcomed us with friendly service and simply great classics. Don't leave without checking the photos from history and getting a slice of pie! Definitely worth a visit if you're in town.

Yelp
Amazing spaghetti house and long time business in the area, great spaghetti and bread sticks

Yelp
This is a place where one goes for an old school dining experience but not especially for the food. The spaghetti is not Italian style but more in that mode of the local style, which is kind of an onion base rather than tomato. The steak is okay. It is their fish sandwich which is their true star, with a thick cut of white fish batter fried and covered in their delicious tartar sauce and coleslaw. The service is famously polite indeed but...extremely inflexible. This place expects new guests to know that they do not allow you to be seated until all members of your party have arrived. Any such mistake will turn those friendly smiles into rude frowns and brusque dismissiveness. The place looks very much like it did in the 1940s & 50s and that's it's charm. It feels like a trip back in an old black and white movie. It's a fun experience but not one you will need often.

The S.

Yelp
Walked in and was seated immediately. Server was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable. Great food as usual. Last day before retirement for Trish. Will definitely miss her smiling face and wish her the best.
google avatar

Shelly B.

Yelp
Jim's is iconic. I can't come to Huntington without ordering a medium spaghetti and a piece of their classic chocolate pie. I love the servers' uniforms that never change, nor do their smiles and warmth. I dined alone yesterday (in town for a wedding), and I enjoyed talking all things Marshall with the server. Being a 2001 grad means I haven't had many chances to eat here since then. I'm so glad I came "home."

Sharp T.

Yelp
My first time visiting. I live near by and never stopped. Highly recommend. The spaghetti was fantastic. Our waitress, Tricia was phenomenal. Thank you all for such a great experience! We sat in the same seat that John F. Kennedy sat in. It has an overall vintage look to the place that takes you back in time.

Linda G.

Yelp
Definitely not what it used to be to be. The food all tastes the same. The waiters are friendly, but the owner/manger isn't friendly at all unless you are someone important.
google avatar

Stef S.

Yelp
Best ever! Can't say enough great things. Spaghetti and salad are second to none. You can even get sauce in plastic to-go containers. A must in Huntington.

James I.

Yelp
Always a great meal and atmosphere. Love this place. My wife and I eat here often. Can't wait to go back.

Renea G.

Yelp
The spaghetti dinner is delicious . Their hamburgers are on a toasted sandwich . Very tasty . Very cheap.

Terry H.

Yelp
Ok, the cheese ravioli is far superior than the meat stuffed ravioli. The coconut cream pie was very good. We were seated immediately. Good ice tea. Service was good. The bread was served room temperature, disappointed. I will return.
google avatar

Jean Y.

Yelp
This business has been around for a long time. Food is awesome, service is very polite and attentive. Price is pretty good. The ambiance is awesome you can look around the restaurant and see pictures of famous people who have dined there before including John f Kennedy.
google avatar

Meredith R.

Yelp
Jim's is a staple in Huntington. A family run business that provides excellent food. The staff are courteous and ensure that the experience is perfect. The fish sandwich and signature spaghetti are a must! The nostalgic atmosphere and the "walk through history" of photos make this quaint eating establishment a perfect place to eat for any occasion.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
Excellent food in an establishment that has been in the area for longer than I have been alive. I love the "50's" diner atmosphere. The staff is friendly. Very clean restaurant.

Casey C.

Yelp
Great service, great food! We loved the atmosphere and the people. A blast from the past!
google avatar

Marcia H.

Yelp
Delightful, retro restaurant!!!! Hubs had a delicious rib eye steak and I enjoyed every bite of the famous spaghetti. Staff was super nice and attentive. The manager came over and said he heard it was our first time ( we were traveling through on I64). He was very thankful and kind and gave is a little welcome candy. It was totally worth getting off the highway and finding this gem in Downton Huntington!!!! And of course we found out this place on YELP!
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place where the food tastes like it came from your mom's kitchen, look no further. I found the staff friendly and warm, service was prompt and the food was very good. This restaurant has stood the test of time sticking to a simple but effective recipe: treat people well and serve good food. Everything is made in house or locally from the bread, to the pie, to the salad dressing. I love places like this because they are unique and have a rich history. Kudos to the staff especially for making this weary traveler feel right at home.

Grant T.

Yelp
I know there is a lot of popularity concerning Jim's, and it may be one of, if not the most popular restaurant in Huntington. With this being said I was disheartened when the spaghetti matched quality with a school lunch. The service was acceptable but impersonal. In my opinion the restaurant itself was too small and felt crowded with the few other customers that day.

David A.

Yelp
Always consistent, not much has changed from when my mom an dad would take us here as kids. The ambiance is pretty much the same as it was in 1960. The food is always the same I have enjoyed everything on the menu. Neat place to eat for a laid back meal.
google avatar

Karen E.

Yelp
Food is always good, no matter what you order!Service is always fast! Great desserts too!!
google avatar

Milly H.

Yelp
I love Jim's! I tried to eat here each time I'm in town. Their spaghetti sauce is unique and I crave it all the time. I do however, miss the brown bread and Roquefort dressing. The service is quick and the place is always clean and the atmosphere is vintage. There's no place like home.
google avatar

L S.

Yelp
WV spaghetti, plain simple with a meat sauce, side of fine grated coleslaw, basket of local Heiner's bread slices served with real butter and captain wafers, topped of with a tea. Fried fish is good too, pass on the steak if the have them, honestly never saw one served. Coming here for decades. Simple diner type restaurant with tasty pies. Miss the sugar syrup that used to be on the table. Miss the white waitress uniforms, miss Jim too. Nothing fancy, always quick service and big warning is they do not take credit cards, bring cash.

Brandi S.

Yelp
Always great food and service. Will continue coming back time and time again. My family will be back soon.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Cool old place I had an opportunity to experience. Lots of memories seemed to fill the walls in this 90 year old establishment thats still rising with business to this day. A thriving little spot with cool atmosphere and an old town diner feel. The food was delish and the service was awesome! Trish is great and made for an even better experience with her memories she shared of her years working with the establishment almost making us feel as if we were there at those moments too! Will be back!
google avatar

Walt S.

Yelp
I love Italian food, and especially pasta. I ordered the 1/2 and 1/2, half spaghetti and half cheese ravioli. The Cole slaw is good as well. They are famously known for their coconut cream pie too!
google avatar

StarTravler D.

Yelp
Great place, Great Service Wonderful Food, Has been in business for many decades. I really love the fish.

Hampton R.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. So much better than Umbertos down in Myrtle!

Yelp
i needed to update my review to say JIMS NOW TAKES CREDIT CARDS. That's honestly a huge pro for me because, i'm your typical millennial; i never carry cash. So now, i can go to jim's without using their ATM. It's great!

Yelp
This location is a local staple in Huntington, WV, and if you aren't from the area there is no better place to try. I have been going here since I was a child and still travel back home for their famous strawberry pie week in mid-May. The women that operate the restaurant have been here a long time and are very efficient even on busy days. Food is classic diner style, but most people get a salad, plate of spaghetti and pie when they visit. Be sure to bring cash or check if you decide to stop in, because they have never and will never accept credit cards of any kind. The only thing that keeps my review from being a 5-star rating is that the atmosphere is sometimes unfriendly. It's a combination of the hard work during busy shifts and that fact the the managers and servers have been there a long time, yet there are times when they are simply annoyed by a simple request. One manager was annoyed that my party of 4 wouldn't sit at the bar even though we were fine with waiting for a table. Our server was busy, but a bit annoyed that we wanted coffee with our pie. I get the stress they are under during strawberry pie week, but I have also felt this way during non-busy days as well. Not always, but enough to say in this review.

Samuel M.

Yelp
Jim's Steak & Spaghetti House. Such an amazing establishment and staple in the City of Huntington, WV. The consistent food they offer is something out of this world. It is a guaranteed place to not change the menu and keep it traditional. The saying, "If it works why fix it?" applies to this restaurant. The pies are something out of an old school 1960's era movie. The customer service alone is to fall over and over again for this place. If you travel through Huntington it is a must see. Something we as humans are seeing less and less of. Don't change your beautiful place stay true. Also! Don't forget to SMILE!!
google avatar

Diana F.

Yelp
One of my favorite hometown restaurants !!!! Living in Texas now, I have to visit Jim's at least once when we go home for a visit!!!

Woody S.

Yelp
Best place in Huntington WV to eat. Worth every minute you wait in line and every penny you spend. Believe me you will not regret eating here. Bring cash they don't take credit cards but do have a atm there. Every meal is like mama would make. Best service and people are super nice. Watching the staff and you can tell they are working hard but they love the job and appreciate all the customers that come in. This is a must when I'm in town.
