How to Care for Wooden Cooking Tools: Spoons, Cutting Boards, and More | Eater

"A family-owned Vermont workshop that specializes in handcrafted wooden kitchenware explains that multi-piece cutting boards (made of glued staves) require more maintenance than one-piece spoons and spatulas because wood expands and contracts with humidity. For conditioning they recommend food-safe mineral oil (an odorless petroleum distillate) as a cost-effective option and, for their line, a blend of coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax; apply oil with a microfiber rag and follow with a wax to seal in moisture. Cleaning should be done by hand with warm soapy water and the tool dried immediately — never use the dishwasher, which can splinter and warp wood. Oil cutting boards at least once a month; for spoons and spatulas, judge conditioning by feel and appearance (if the fibers look or feel dry, it’s time to oil). Avoid oiling rolling pins — wax alone keeps them nonstick. With proper, regular care these pieces can become long-lasting heirlooms." - Kat Thompson

Google
This was our first visit and we were impressed with their Memorial Day Tent Sale which goes through this weekend. Lots of outlet sale items at 50 percent off and other regular items at 30 percent. Very nice display of items and helpful store personnel. Worth the visit

Google
I got GREAT customer service from JK Adams. A maple carving board developed a big crack after just a few months of ownership. Surprising because I’m good about keeping my boards oiled. Anyway, after a few email exchanges the board was warranty replaced. Top notch!

Google
Wonderful place to find a gift, a spice, a kitchen tool, beautiful plates, & they ship too!

Google
Always love browsing beautiful items for kitchen & dining here. Over the years I've purchased highest quality JKAdams maple cutting boards for myself & as gifts, also beautiful table linens, bowls, Simon Pierce hand blown glass vase, knives, s&p shakers, kitchen tools & gadgets. kitchen themed Christmas ornaments, etc ...always new items to see. Pricingvs fair, & they hold good sales periodically & regularly discount items as well. The staff has been very customer oriented, consistently friendly & very helpful.

Pretty cutting boards, for sure. But - beware of purchasing sale food items. My order arrived with 4 fully expired items and 2 that are due to expire in 7 days.

I had a really bad experience in this store. I was interested in buying a salad bowl, a cutting board and some other gifts for family. In addition to not having much inventory of what I wanted, the staff people were incredibly rude. So much so that I ended up putting the items I had picked out back on the shelves. I wouldn’t recommend a visit to their retail store. It seems like they have nice boards that are sold wholesale but visiting them in person will leave a bad taste in your mouth. Not worth the drive.

Google
There was a lot to see here. Some great gifts if you're looking for gift giving. Some nice cheeseboards and a lot of knives. I also had food items for sale. We bought the pickled garlic cloves. well worth the stop.

Yelp
I love this store even though it is expensive. They have so many items I want making it just fun to browse the store and look at everything. We recently stopped by their 60% off sale. Sounds like a great deal and is, but things are so expensive that you are still paying a good chunk of change for their seconds boards. I bought a $380 large board and absolutely love it. The veteran employee who answered all my questions was amazing. She was so kind and thoughtful when I was trying to figure out what I wanted and educated us on the different type of woods. I loved how trusting she was when asking me the original price on the board and also when I paid inside and came outside to pick up the board. Great experience and I love my new heirloom board!

Yelp
I'm not one to write reviews - but I had such a bad experience I feel the need to. I am from Vermont, and grew up with my parents owning an incredible JK Adams cutting board - it lasted them over a decade. So when it came time to register for my wedding, I wanted to make sure to support this local business. We received a beautiful oval cutting board from JK Adams for our wedding...which broke within a month of use. We washed and dried it properly, oiled it and took very good care of it. We assumed this must have been a fluke - so I called and asked for a replacement. I was promised this would be shipped to me. It never came. Six months later I was back home in VT (We were living in CA) and I decided to stop by the store in person and explain what happened and pick up a new board. When I went into the store I was told that they couldn't give me a new one and I needed to call. So I called again and this time the cutting board came. We've used it for three months and it is warped, cracked and about to break. Additionally, my parents purchased a new large cutting board that cracked and broke within two weeks. Its not worth the effort of getting a replacement when it'll just break again. Really disappointing.

Yelp
If you're in the area, and you're looking for a unique, or harder-to-find, or truly-Vermont kitchen item, this is the place to shop. You will find an assortment of gadgets, accessories, smaller appliances, and of course Vermont foods and cookbooks. The prices are "specialty store typical." They make many of their own wood products. On the top level, they do carry an assortment of smaller appliances, by manufacturers such as Cuisinart. But I found the prices of those items to not be competitive compared to other chains who not only start with a lower price but often offer discount coupons. I guess that might be why there was a small layer of dust on the top of those boxes. But never mind those. Enjoy shopping for gifts, specialty items, and Vermont items here!

Yelp
Unique if not overpriced but also quality kitchen gadgets. If you need something they have it. Very large selection of all things kitchen. I bought some fun and interesting things. Go but bring your wallet. You will need it.

Yelp
I feel bad giving Adams 1 star, but I have no choice. My family lives in Manchester. I love supporting local businesses. I love that they host the farmers market in winter. I bought a cutting board from the store--a really big one. I love it. So why the bad review? Because I then bought a second cutting board, again at full price not a second--smaller, lighter. That was last August. I have taken good care of it. I wash it after use, then dry it, then let it dry standing up. It has never been dropped or the like. It should last years. In fact, my dad has an Adams cutting board from when I was a kid, still uses it. Instead, it has split in half, and it has other cracks at the sides. Sometimes you get a bad one right? So, I sent the store an email, including a photo of the board. I've gotten no reply. If the lousy board wasn't bad enough, when they didn't bother to respond, I decided I had no choice but to post here. Too bad.

Yelp
Higher end brands. Located in a very rural area which I assume attracts weekenders and tourists as the prices are definitely in the higher end. But they certainly offer every gadget, tool, & utensil in order to ease entertaining or attempting to perfect an exotic dish. Cutting birds, spice rubs, candles, wine openers, table cloths, pottery, appliances, stem ware, serving platters & everything in between. Curt service. Private parking.

Yelp
Love JK Adams! Great products, great people, fantastic store and they host the winter farmers market. A must visit in the Manchester/Dorset area.

Yelp
Extensive collection of the highest quality kitchenware. If you can't find what you want elsewhere this is the place.

Yelp
Yes, 5-stars woohoo as good as it gets. Great selection and fair pricing. Great combination of all the technical stuff you could ask for, plus some beautiful pottery/etc for home an kitchen. If you are a home cook and find yourself lucky enough to be heading west on Rt 30 then it's worth a stop.

Yelp
Great quality cutting boards with a lifetime guarantee. Helpful employees explained the differences between the boards and guided us to the perfect board for our needs. Prices are fair--cheaper than what we found searching the internet prior to our visit. Fyi there's a sale section outside by the side entrance.

Yelp
We ordered some personalized cutting boards for our cheese company, and they're absolutely fantastic. The wood is of great quality, and they came quickly in the mail. If I ever need any more wood or any type of kitchen supply, I'm absolutely thinking of JK Adams first.

Yelp
Fine store for kitchen supplies, a few unique VT items, make this a worthwhile stop. Every Sunday--a fantastic local farmers market.

Yelp
Looking for that hard to find kitchen item? This is the place. The staff will locate just about anything you need.

Yelp
I went here for the first time a few days ago, and I completely fell in love. Prices range from reasonable to higher end. Lots to choose from, well-organized, and easy to navigate. There are cute, quirky things all the way to professional things. They also offer wedding registry which is a plus. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It's a little off the main roadways from town, but worth the extra five miles.
