Portland Restaurants and Bars Where You Can See Live Music | Eater Portland

"This Nob Hill restaurant went on a pandemic-related hiatus for a few years, but Jo is back and so is its live jazz. On Wednesday and Sunday nights, acts like the Tom Wakeling Trio or jazz guitarist Dan Balmer set up in the corner while couples drip apples in fondue or nurse raspberry lemon drops. Make a reservation ahead of time to snag a spot." - Jenni Moore

Went at Jo bar side on a not busy Wednesday with husband for drinks and casual food. Reservation for 5:30 but arrived at 5:55 (we called to let them now). No HH menu offered; kind of okay it was 5 min to the end it. Nice and attentional staff, N/A cocktails are correct, Rasberry lemon drop is good . Food depends on the dish. We got The soup of the day: salmon chowder: was okay, lot of potatoes, lack of salmon, tasted good but not really the salmon - beet salad: very tasted, big and well balance tastes - Duck: very good and perfectly cook but very disappointing by the quantity for a $36 ( that they seems to now charged $38; menu not updated yet as told) for a 2 small pieces that in addition was 2 sides ( not the tender middle!) and a barley and corn rissoto that was fine but not noticeable. - banana ice cream with Dulce de lèche and creamy meringue dessert: huge part and very good We tried but for same price range we prefer other spot. We may give a try for their HH .

Traveler in town for a long weekend. Just walking around the area and saw the little three person jazz band setting up and I love a casual bit to eat. We got there early, usually it seems a reservation is needed but my friend and I got a seated at the bar immediately. The music was great and according to signage, they have jazz bands regular. The food was great! Had the Fondue and the garlic bread appetizers and the scallops for the main course. Definitely highly recommend.

Fantastic food. The salmon nicoise salad was delicious. Loved the kalamata olives and capers in it. Service was impeccable! Leon was on his game and just warm and friendly. Just a genuinely good guy. He should teach a masterclass on his profession. Tosh was very sweet. Jazz band was great.

Jo Bar is basically just an extension of this particular Papa Haydn, serving the same food and drinks, although for years, I only knew it as the place next door that Papa Haydn's customers walked through to use the shared restroom. Now I know better. My wife and I are sentimentally attached to Papa Haydn, since our first date was at their Sellwood location, but this one on NW 23rd Ave was my first favorite. Stellar service, fantastic food, brilliant beverages (their green tea concoctions are a must-try!), delectable desserts (their biggest claim to fame), and a reputation as a romantic rendezvous makes Papa Haydn perfectly permitted to such praise. The fare here is composed of simple, familiar dishes elevated to elegance: sandwiches with sophistication, paninis with pizzazz and pastas with panache, soups and salads with substance and style. A perennial favorite of mine is the cubano which, to be fair, is a bit like bunting in baseball: a safe choice that is hard to screw up. Nights and weekends tend to fill up fast, so lock in a reservation, or be prepared to loiter around outside. Thankfully, any visit to Papa Haydn is worth the wait.

I love Jo Bar! I’ve been going every week for several months to listen to live jazz and have seldom been disappointed. Great bartenders, Helen, Gemma and Cory as well as server Leon. Terrific ravioli and I’ve tried and loved several desserts, my current favorite is the Passion. Also good wine choices and they stock Hennessy, my favorite cognac. I hear the happy hour is wonderful but I get there too late for it. Do yourself a favor and check them out!

Google
The strawberry salad was just what I needed after a long day of travel. Sweet, crisp, and delicious. Corey & Gemma were an absolute delight to chat with, and the strawberry/cucumber/gin cocktail was so incredibly refreshing. Thank you for a wonderful first meal in Portland!!

Google
Fantastic happy hour! Food is unique and delicious and the service was OUTSTANDING. The hostess and the two servers we had we all friendly, relaxed, attentive and super fun. Highly recommend Jo Bar!

Google
Went for happy hour. They have a great selection for happy hour. Wish they were not out of burrata. Did have their cheese fondue and the Cubano slider with a side salad. The food was great. Also had The Bartender, which was fantastic. Will definitely come back again.

Yelp
A seriously enjoyable experience. JoBar offered a menu full of delicious choices. I/enjoyed our meal. It was both delicious and an excellent value I highly recommend JoBar for a delightful dining experience.

Yelp
A PDX staple, but Haydn is not what it used to be. The live jazz is still the draw, but despite the uptown beat & low lit romantic 23rd vibe, the response from diners is slow and retired. Personable service is what it was known for but the staff culture has changed.

Yelp
February 2025: I was fortunate enough to get a table on a Wednesday night, and listen to the singer while enjoying my meal! I had a lovely large piece of sturgeon, and the kitchen was kind enough to sub a veg (broccolini) for me instead of wild rice. (Ofc the wild rice would have gone better with sturgeon, but I really needed a vegetable bc I was planning on dessert, and didn't have room for salad!) The entree was very pleasant, but ofc I came for dessert! I was torn between red velvet and the signature boconne dolce, but I'm happy with my choice. Alas, I was too tired to order a cocktail, but the valrhona mocha was surprisingly tasty and not too sweet -- good enough to be served by a coffee shop, which is not often the case with restaurant coffee! Would totally love to come to happy hour next time I'm in Portland, for a cocktail, cake, and coffee!

Yelp
Have been to Jo Bar many times, typically for Happy Hour. They have discounted cocktails with fun names and inventive twists. The HH red or white wine for $8 is always a safe bet. HH snacks are varied. Burrata & crostini, wedge salad, hamburger sliders, pork tacos, Cubano sliders, to name a few. Prices $8-9. Get a few to share. The tacos have a delicious avocado cream sauce, but the teeny, tiny chunks or pork were few; all you can taste is the avocado and onions. Add more pork! The wedge salad was tasty but needed more dressing. Servers are friendly and check in frequently. Lots of seats at the bar and a mix of high tops and regular tables. Seating outside on sidewalk for those who prefer people watching. Many nights they have music starting at 7ish.

Yelp
Great stalwart neighborhood restaurant, unfortunately held back by this painting. Remove this painting, which makes me sad every time I see it, and I guarantee your business will increase by 25%. Tips will increase. Lines will form out the door. If you don't want that, then I guess keep the painting. I am so sick of this painting. 20 years is long enough. Great food, service, people, however. It's just a really bad painting. Put up a picture of some bridges. An Ansel Adam photograph. Dogs playing poker, a brick wall. It probably has lead paint too.

Yelp
Stoped by here on a whim today and was instantly reminded of why I love this place so much. I really appreciate the dedication they put into their cocktails. The ... Hattan and Bartenders Choice were top-notch. The food is just as good. I greatly enjoyed the Smoked Salmon dip and El Pastor tacos. So much so that I had to order a second helping of the tacos so I could get a picture! The space is also very comfortable and I enjoy the music they play here. They seem to cater to an older crowd (my people). I'd like to come back to enjoy some live jazz.

Yelp
They still have happy hour and it's excellent with things I like- wedge salad, Cubano Pork sandwich with a side salad and Burrata cheese plate. The bartender was a great server and mixed my wife a custom drink and the Boneyard ZiPA for me was just $5...

Yelp
In stead of eating at Jo Bar proper, a friend and I were offered seats in the adjoining Papa Haydn, where we were underwhelmed by several things: First, the ambiance is sadly lacking. I mean, you could find nicer seating and surrounds at your local Denny's for goodness sake. No real theme or rhyme or reason, just kind of sad, tired old decor. Second, the food: Meh. I mean, C'mon! This is the famous Papa Haydn for goodness sakes. The prices are high and the food is just ok. Not the food we'd come to expect from this place on the previously trendy 23rd. In addition, I was certain Papa Haydn was a place to go for a well-made mixed drink. My Lemon Drop was served in a tiny cordial glass, and not a martini glass -- big no no in my experience. No sugar rim, tiny glass. My companion's drink was just as bad. Poorly mixed, poorly presented, and a real disappointment. Third, the wait staff: What is the deal with these kids in their street clothes, with the horrible table presence, lack of eye contact, and customer engagement? I just don't appreciate this whole situation, and feel it was a waste of our time. C'mon Papa Haydn and Jo Bar, get it together!

Yelp
We just left from an evening at Jo Bar. We ordered a few drinks each, an appetizer, salad, and desserts. When we ordered our drinks we were told they would be the same price as a similar drink on the menu or maybe less. To our surprise, they were $4 more each. When we received our bill and inquired about what we had been told verse what our charges were the manager was very firm on the fact that this was our problem and she would not adjust anything despite what we were told (mind you this was an almost 200 dollar bill and we were asking for a 20ish dollar adjustment). She did not care about what we were told or our shock at being charged $19 a drink, and in fact walked away once she said her stance and clearly was not concerned with our experience. We will not return here simply because of how we were treated and misinformed.

Yelp
We went in for my wife's birthday. We had reservations. We did not get our preferred seating, we were told it was specifically reserved by someone else. For the two hours were there no one sat in the booth. Our guest had to order three times before they had the whiskey in stock that he prefered. Needless to say the service level didn't meet our expectation. I request the birthday candle for the wife's desert and was the waiter said of course and I will sing Happy Birthday to her. We got the cake and he opted out of singing at the table when delivering the cake, stating he had a terrible singing voice, we handled it ourselves making sure not to interrupt the flow of the night. The food was okay. I would say the fries were to the top. I would rate the food as average compared to other restaurants in the area. The ambiance was nice with the jazz band playing. We had the honor of having Jimmie Herrod stop by for a drink. They talked him to singing a few sets with made the night even better. We saw him perform with Pink Martini. Great singer!

Yelp
Wonderful music by Marilyn Keller in a cozy setting where Papa Hayden's food is served by skilled friendly wait staff. What more could one ask! Make a reservation - it fills up!

Yelp
We came here because we heard about the $12 throwback menu they had in cooperation with Papa Haydn. Who can say no to $12 entrees -- in fact we even splurged and got a third $12 item as an app just for shits because it was so cheap. The food was good, I would give it 4* but it was 40 minutes between when the appetizer came and when the entrees came. Which would be fine if we were slow eaters but we weren't. The worst part, though, was that my torta rustica was cold. It's pie shaped and the tip was warmer than the wide end so I suspect it just wasn't heated through enough? (Otherwise the tip would be cooler if it was sitting out, right?) Hubby suspects it might have been frozen?

Yelp
Wow, what a find! I've been looking for places that have live jazz and Jo Bar is in my neighborhood. I just heard wonderful music, the Tom Wakeling Trio! And the food was great, I had the ravioli and Dolce for dessert. The bartender recommended both and she was right on, plus there's no cover charge. Live music on Wednesday and Sunday nights.

Yelp
The salmon salad was best salad that I've had in a really long time. I'm very critical of salmon and this was perfect. All the staff was friendly as well. Vibes on point. I didn't get desert but I will be going back just for this salad again and a slice of cake!

Yelp
Jo Bar is probably the longest running mediocre restaurant in NW Portland. The food varies from pretty good (crab cakes, cubano sandwich) to 'why did you do that?' (nicoise with waaaay too much vinegar and misplaced salmon). And of course you can get the overly sugary desserts from Papa Haydn's next door. That said, the service is always friendly and efficient with the ever-changing young staff, and the bar tenders will change the TV channel for you. Go on a jazz night to maximize the experience.

Yelp
I feel living so close to 23rd ,I had visited most bars and restaurants in the area but then I realized that we had never been to Jo bar. It seems to be a popular spot as I see people flocking here at all hours. We came on a Sunday evening which generally are quieter but this place had almost all the tables occupied. Our server was friendly and fast and checked up on us frequently. we had - Cubano Sandwich - The sandwich is filled with slow-roasted pork shoulder, swiss cheese & prosciutto . Very filling and came with a side of soup (choice of soup or salad) . Tuna Poke - Ahi with ginger, shallots, seaweed , avocado and spicy mayo and comes with wonton chips. Loved this dish ,even though it was a starter ,I had this as my main meal and was totally full by the end of it. As the leaves fall - slightly spicy cocktail but very apt for the weather Mulled Cider - I loved this so much that I ordered another glass ,it was just the drink for a chilly evening . Cacao de oro - This was my least favorite thing that we ordered and I love desserts ,so that's a big statement coming from me. It was a dark chocolate cake with a texture of mousse & buckwheat crunch base. I am sure it was a great dessert but just not something either of us enjoyed. Lots of indoor seating , good service and great food - Totally recommended.

Yelp
We have a truly enjoyable experience at this restaurant. The staff is always so considerate, the menu really has something for everyone from kids to picky to more adventurous eaters, and there's a reason they've been baking cakes for 45 years; the product is excellent. Not to mention that this is one of the only restaurants in town that regularly supports high-quality live music. Parking can be a bit difficult, but there is a paid lot around the corner and a bus stop out front. Get the Georgian peanut butter mousse torte.

Kari M.

Yelp
In my humble opinion if you want the best cocktails ever, the best lunch or dinner , the best waiters, waitresses & bartenders and the coolest ambiance of the NW area! I just love it there!!

Yelp
Roasted beet salad, candied walnuts, creamery goat cheese, and cara cara oranges along with a light vinaigrette was eye rolling yummy. Bread and garlic butter did not disappoint. Topped off with a glass of Chardonnay made for an excellent lunch. I'll be back definitely! (25 years and counting Jo Bar / Papa Haydn's!)

Yelp
I've been here multiple times over the years. I've always really enjoyed the ambience and the food. Today, however, I was disappointed in both the seating and the food. The waitress was lovely, however. I went with a gal friend. We had reservations but the table we wanted to sit at, which was unoccupied, was unavailable. Apparently someone had reserved this particular table and 2 other tables we requested to sit at were also unoccupied and unavailable. We ended up sitting outside which was nice. The last time I was here I had a lovely beet salad with prawns and enjoyed it thoroughly. Today I had prawns risotto which was ok. Not as flavorful as I've had and the quantity was minimal for the risotto. The prawns were tasty. Anyway, the jest of it is I'm a little turned off by the experience today and the desire to return has been greatly diminished. Sad. Generally I would have given this restaurant 4 or 5 stars, but after today I have to give it 3.

Yelp
We arrived without a reservation at 12:20 on a Sunday and were immediately seated, but that didn't seem to be the norm (make a res). I've eaten here before and always liked it. Our server was professional. We ordered the salmon Niçoise salad, the Singapore bay shrimp salad, and the Cuban sandwich with fries. We didn't get our food for 45 minutes and had somewhere to be. Thinking 1.5 hours was enough time for lunch. The fries were too crispy and dry on the inside, indicating they'd been sitting under the heat lamp for some time. I could tell that if they'd been delivered fresh they would have been delish. The Cubans was really good. The salmon nicoise was good (lots of lettuce), and the Singapore bay shrimp was spicy and good. Hopefully, our next experience will be better.

Yelp
The highlight by far on our Friday night visit was the live jazz music! Jo Bar is great - they have live jazz on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday every week from 7-10pm and on Friday 10pm-midnight. No cover! I much prefer Jo Bar over next door sister restaurant Papa Hadyn. I love the darker, cozier feel. We had reservations for 830pm but it didn't look like we needed it (Coronavirus worries and the rain might have kept people away). The server said it was unusually quiet for a Friday night. We went with the Portland Dining Month menu and since they were also doing half price bottles with Teutonic, we split a bottle of white pinot noir. It was so good, as was the food. I can never resist a handmade fresh pasta and this dining month pasta delivered fresh al dente noodles with a light tomato sauce mixed with prosciutto like thin slices of cured meat. The appetizer was a salad of herbs and greens, including radishes with tops still attached, accompanied by two large, succulent prawns in a garlic sauce. I felt like I was eating straight from the garden. It was fun. For dessert, we got to select from the regular Jo Bar dessert menu. It's different from the Papa Hadyn cake menu - fewer options but I thought they all looked pretty good. I went with the chamomile creme brûlée accompanied by a lemon shortbread cookie, decorated like the fruit itself. It was rich and creamy - definitely needed the balance of acidity in the cookie. I'd get it again. My dining partner got the horchata panna cotta with the fancy rice crispy and tamarind gelee. I like the components separately, but not as much combined. In either case dessert was good and with the Portland Dining Month menu, it was definitely worth the visit here.

Yelp
Service is great, and the ambiance is perfect for a romantic night out. The server is knowledgeable about their menu. Love the place!

Yelp
A last minute choice for late lunch, but extremely happy with everything. Good cocktail & wine list, great service, and excellent food. We both went with the wild king salmon which was served with corn, tomatoes, aioli, and other accompaniments wrapped in a thin cucumber strip sliced lengthwise. Salmon was seasoned well and cooked perfectly, not the cheapest but an amazing - and unexpected - dish at a place that seems to do mainly sandwiches. My dining companion Gary C. had an issue with the consistency of the corn chowder and while I agree that it was almost the consistency of a sauce rather than a soup the flavor was great and that's sometimes what you get when you have lunch at 2:30 PM. Not a big issue for me. Ambience is great including some nice covered outdoor tables (which were all reserved on my recent visit) and the service was really good. And the desert menu is an entire page from the bakery next door and I'm guessing most are as good as the chocolate & peanut butter desert we had with great flavors and texture contrast. We didn't start out with Jo Bar & Rotisserie as the target lunch spot, but I absolutely plan to return on future visits to PDX.

Yelp
My second visit in 16 years. This is upscale-ish NW 23rd, so don't look for value. For example, $16 for a Cobb Salad and $15 for a Cubano sandwich. Oh well, you pay a premium for the people watching factor. The Jojito was refreshing on a humid day. Likewise, the gazpacho hit the spot, small portion though. The fondue was better than expected, the cheese was tangy and sharp. I prefer fondue in the portion they serve here, i.e., as a small plate or appetizer. I'm not a fan of the big vat of cheese found at fondue restaurants. The service was attentive and friendly.

Addie C.

Yelp
Unfortunately I had an issue with Jo's from the moment I stepped in. The waitress with the bandaid nose was unpleasant. No smile , no greeting. Second issue was the silverware cleanliness. Fork was dirty and glasses had marks as well. Waitress was also unfriendly ! Common trend. When my date ordered wine we had to order it a second time because they didn't even bring the first one! The waitress also spilled water on our table. Then i ordered pasta which had hair in it. No apology and no refund from either the waitress or manager. Waste of my afternoon.

Robyn W.

Yelp
We go to Jo Bar often. The food is great and the atmosphere is calm and generally quiet. On any previous visit I would have given four stars. On our last visit we reserved a table at 4 for a party of three . We planned to have drinks and appetizers and leave before the dinner hour. As usual for this restaurant the drinks and food were slow but we were not in a hurry. Drinks maybe 15 minutes and food 20 or a little longer. We were told at 4:50 that our table was needed at five. The bar was mostly empty. The waitress was not rude but did not apologize or offer us another place to sit. I hope management of this place reads reviews. We will definitely think twice before our next visit.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and looking for a nice sit down lunch. Found this on Yelp with good reviews. My wife had the Ahi salad, daughter had the bay shrimp salad and I had the fried chicken sandwich. All were done very well. Bartender was cranking out some good cocktails and desert was one of the best we've had in some time. Waitress and staff were all friendly and attentive. We'll come back when I'm back in this part of town.
google avatar

Yuli L.

Yelp
We came for a girls night out, and we had a good time. The food was great! We got some fresh oysters, the fish & the chicken dishes and all were delicious! I got an old fashion and my friend got a recommended pinot noir and both were good too! We shared a horchata pudding and that was good as well. The price tag was a bit high, but we stomached it with a few laughs.
google avatar

Gary C.

Yelp
Been here a few times now and it is my new favorite spot. Love the atmosphere, the people and the FOOD! They don't have a huge menu and yet I find it hard to decide because everything is good, including the wine list. Well thought out.
google avatar

Jo V.

Yelp
Excellent service, decent food on the pricey side for quality and taste. Hot buttered rum was amazing. Came specifically to see Dan Balmer and was not disappointed. Unfortunately, Dan and his troop were shoved on a dinky stage with no mike, so he had to talk over patrons who were not paying attention. If you are hosting professional musicians, do it properly. Jo's is a smallish space and patrons should be more aware instead of talking loudly when a musician is trying to be heard. Will be back to hear Dan Balmer.
google avatar

Shelly C.

Yelp
Had lunch here with a date and got the shrimp salad - ended up finding a wadded up brown paper napkin about 1/3 of the way into it. Totally disgusting. They took it off our tab, but in truth, they should have comp'd the whole meal. I had some stomach trouble the next day, not what you would call a pleasant experience. Will not return.
google avatar

DragonFly Chick ..

Yelp
Not for any other reason than the cracked torn and worn out sad barstools that are beyond bad, it feels like rocks under your ass! Had to sit on my roller up coat to get thru dinner. Seriously, they won't invest into 9 new stools yet have no problem charging the prices the do, e.g., $22-31 for entree. Then add there are hardly vegan options worth coming other than beet salad w/o the cheese. NOT one options on happy hour. Mgmt needs to get with it. I won't be back until this is fixed as I am single at sit at bars. This was almost miserable.
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
Always been a cool and chill place to grab a drink and snacks with friends. I like that this place is not crowded and loud. The drinks here are decent and the service is good.
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
Took my son and his roommates here. They ate pate! It was delicious. The short ribs were huge hit - fall off the bone with deep flavor. My salmon was fresh catch; you could tell. The craft cocktails were inventive and tasty, especially the Bee's knees. Noisy and small, reservations are a good idea. Service was exceptional.
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Charming bistro in the heart of Nob Hill. My friend and I got a delicious silky bowl of soup, great balanced cocktails, and a scrape-the-plate dessert. Sunday nights even feature a live jazz music band with no cover. I would suggest this place as a first-date spot or even a special occasion spot. Service was also extremely attentive and knowledgeable of the whole menu, even featuring a vegan burger.

Shelley E.

Yelp
Hands down our favorite Portland restaurant and bar. It's in our neighborhood and it's friendly and cozy with fabulous food, deserts and service. I don't eat meat and they have a wonderful salmon salad, fresh seafood dish and a beyond meat burger that is accompanied by really really good petite fries. Outdoor seating is so fun on nice days/evenings. They can understandably be quite crowded so going early or making rezzies is a good bet.
google avatar

Dee E.

Yelp
Excellent food and cocktails. The wine list is always one of the best in town - and that's saying something! The specials rotate at a good clip to keep things fresh. Can't beat a happy hour pour and people watching on 23rd.
google avatar

Jodi L.

Yelp
Nice covered outdoor dining although cars driving by can be noisy at times. Indoor seating options too. Food and service were great. Loved the classic French onion soup.
google avatar

Yelp
I LOVE JO BAR! It is certainly one of my go-to establishments for Happy Hour whenever wandering around NW 23rd. It starts at 3PM whereas many of the other choices don't open until 4PM. Staff here is great and the atmosphere is fabulous. As it is attached to Papa Hayden you can sneak in some delicious deserts! Aside from HH they do have a nice menu with varying price points and some delicious seasonal rotating cocktails. Their Quince 75 was a perfect spin on the classic as was their mulled wine. Their burger slider for HH is great - perfect portion that comes with a small wedge salad and tots! They have plenty of choices all under $10. I highly recommend stopping in while you're in the area!
google avatar

Mindy K.

Yelp
Visited this bar for happy hour on Friday. We tried the fondue on the HH menu. I didn't care for the cheese but the spread was delightful. Wine pours were generous and a good deal for $6 a glass. No complaints on the service either. Definite recommendation for happy hour.

Yelp
Been here a few times but twice in the last week and it was my first time trying out their food! I have always loved this spot but the past week of my double header made me love it even more! The bloody mary here... guys, SO good and the perfect size- not tooooo much, but just right! Also had the summer sangria which was dang good! Gotta recommend the burratta with peaches and tomatoes.. so good! Can't go wrong with their warm olives and bread, I mean flakey salt IN butter??? Amazing! Really cute spot, I love when it's chilled and rainy but they open the sliding windows.. Cool vibe, nice art, good staff. I love this spot. Great place to grab a drink while ya wait for Bamboo sushi!!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
I can only comment on drinks.. blood orange martini, yum. The cocktail nuts were spicy and good too. Food looked good but didnt eat there

Brittney D.

Yelp
I spontaneously came to this place for lunch, not realizing there was a 40 minute wait for those without reservations. Yikes. Luckily there was one opened seat at the bar for me (there's only about 6 spots so plan wisely). The bartender was attentive and mixed me a pear sidecar and spicy peach margarita respectively. Both were classic and delicious. He gave excellent reviews on the rotisserie chicken and porchetta. I decided to go with the Porchetta because it was a unique take on a pork dish including sautéed peaches and bourbon peach bbq sauce. Pricey place but nothing is expected less of Portland dining. I recommend trying this place and hope all dishes were as delicious!

Yelp
Went to lunch at Jo Bar yesterday with the BF, and had a great lunch. I hadn't been to Jo Bar in a really long time, but we were in the area, and I'm so glad we chose this place over the many other choices we had on NW 23rd. I felt like a cocktail, so I ordered "My Bohemian", which was made with st. germain, zirbenz, dry vermouth, sauvignon blanc, and prosecco. It was lightly sweet and exactly what I was in the mood for. I would definitely order that again. The BF loves the pate, so we started with that - chicken liver paté laced with clear creek brandy and served with bruschetta and eggplant marmalade. Again, delicious. The pate was whipped to perfection and so good on the toasted bruschetta. We ended up sharing a Porchetta Pizza made with thinly sliced porchetta, fontina cheese, roasted broccoli rabe, roasted pears, olive oil, chili flakes, and lemon zest. The crust was fantastic because of their wood oven, and it had perfectly charred edges with the right amount of crispiness. The toppings went perfectly together, and quite honestly, I probably could have eaten more if we hadn't have ordered the pate for an appetizer. The service was fantastic and I love the decor of Jo Bar - dark green walls, heavy velvet drapes and a great cozy feeling (especially with the wood oven). The only reason I didn't give Jo Bar 5 stars is because the BF ordered a cheeseburger and had to send it back because it was so overcooked. Luckily the rest of our food was excellent, so I thought it was a great experience, and worthy of 4 stars.

Yelp
Stopped in to this bar while shopping to grab a drink and watch the masters golf championship. Everyone was so kind and friendly. I ordered a blood orange old fashioned and a mimosa for my wife. Didn't order any food but we enjoy the company of many people in the restaurant/bar! The food smelt delicious! Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Lil pricey for the food but the cocktails were worth it. Mixed very well and the ambiance is nice and mellow but romantic.

Yelp
Wow; I made reservations for 2 several days in advance for lunch. When we arrived on time, we were promptly escorted to a small dark corner and asked for a window seat, and there were 3 available. Each time we asked the waiter checked and said oh no, those tables were reserved. How I asked, are we not being seated where we like when these tables are open and online there was nothing about special seating, a seating chart, etc. He brought the manager out who had an ATTITUDE with us and told us we could have asked for a special seat. We decided to go outside. We ordered $34 risotto with prawns. 3 prawns to be exact and a very small serving of quite bland risotto. What a joke. Our waitress was charming and we loved her attentiveness to us and we tipped her well; although in truth, manager; you should have comped us both this less than appealing lunch served up with rudeness and your dismissive attitude. Probably not coming back here any time soon. And the table we wanted did not serve anyone for a good deal of the time we were seated. Another one came open and no one bothered to ask us if we'd like that. Get a clue Jo Bar, you're not Beverly Hills, you're not NYC, you're in NW Portland on a fume filled street where you seat people outside and your portion, seasoning and price all together? Add up to zero. Take a lesson from Justa Pasta on NW 19th if you want great risotto with excellent flavor and portion!
