Joe Allen, Icon Behind Popular Theater District Restaurants, Dies at 87 | Eater NY

"As one of the surviving international outposts of Joe Allen, the Paris location is noted in the piece as a successful satellite that remains open even after many of his other satellite restaurants closed." - Luke Fortney

Thanksgiving. The special set menu ticked all the boxes for an authentic Thanksgiving dinner. The staff made it special for my family and friends. I look forward to returning.

We came here for Thanksgiving dinner and it was delicious. I would give my right arm for the cranberry relish and stuffing recipes. We had the apple cranberry pie with ice cream and it was fabulous. The maitre d worked in NYC and was very welcoming. We will return

We went to the Joe Allen restaurant for Thanksgiving, and our experience was truly excellent. The dishes were absolutely delicious — perfectly prepared and really flavorful. A big thank-you to Mr. Singh for his warm, attentive, and professional service. We will definitely be back!”

As a tourist, in a group of 4, with allergy restrictions, this restaurant was a great choice. The service was great, the atmosphere was very nice, the food was also great, and the director of establishment was soo kind. Highly recommend!

We had a terrible experience last night at your restaurant here in Paris. The manager, Ian, was rude and un accommodating. Everyone at our table of 7 got their drinks and food but not me. No glass of champagne, no French fries no say their for half hour waiting while the waiter went back and forth serving other tables. When I went to the bar to ask what the problem was, Ian said the place was packed (it was not at all packed) and it was the waiter’s first day. He offered me a glass of champagne, which was a nice gesture, but had such an attitude! When my “Pomme frites” arrived, they were sweet potato fries that were SOGGY. The waiter said that in France, when you say “frites”, it means sweet potato fries. What??? Such BS! We were all together to celebrate a friend from Hollywood Savoy who passed away. Everyone at the table was a server there 40 years ago, so they know what good service is. Ian didn’t even know the restaurant when I asked him. I was a singer there in between singing with Michel Sardou. The last time I was at your restaurant in Paris I was with Jessye Norman during a production I was in with her at Théâtre de Champs-Elysees. It has gone DOWNHILL! I go to Joe Allen’s in NYC often, as it’s where I live, but service is the top.

Great food! Great service! Great atmosphere! Music in the background was a mix of Nirvana, Queen, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, and other bands relative to the genre. Server was great and ensured our order was out in a very timely manner. One issue I didn't inquire about was the extra €25 charge on my receipt. Threw away the receipt after I left and didn't really inquire about it. My loss if anything but double check your tickets. Other issue is the outside/outdoor seating (enclosed) and the amount of smoke. Of course, it's Paris, and people smoke and u have nothing against it (smoked for 20+ years). If you don't mind it, sit outside and enjoy your meal. Highly recommend the pulled pork! Would definitely return!

The place didn’t seem really interesting at the first glance but after trying it, I really changed my mind: 🍔Food (4,5/5): I tried the Joe Allen signature burger which was really really great. Maybe one of the best I ve tried. On the other side it was a bit pricey, yet I will definitely eat it again. 🛎️ Service (4,5/5): the head waiter was, at least in my occasion very very kind and attentive. I don’t speak French but he gladly answered my questions in English, joked a bit, made sure that everything is ok and made me feel welcome to bother him in case I have any problem with the food. However the other waiter and waitress that served our table was not so pleasant. I could describe them as a bit moody. 🌃Atmosphere (4/5): the internal space is decorated quite nicely, giving nice cozy vibes. However the external one has nothing special. 👍Overall (4,5/5): A pleasant experience. If being just a bit more pricey than the usual is ok for you, you should definitely try it.

Yelp
Such a delicious burger when missing home and needed some comfort food. The burger was juicy and had bacon on it. Outdoor seating was plenty and very clean. Enjoyed the house special wine which was tasty and affordable.

Yelp
This is a nice restaurant with nice folks, hearty portions, and good food. I really enjoyed dining at this restaurant. For reference, we had brunch there. I had a beef tartar with some fresh French fries. As for my mom, she had a pastrami sandwich. Pictures:

Yelp
Because I keep an apartment in Montmartre within walking distance of our Press office. And, due to the fact the reputation of this area has a slightly decadent and arty flavour to it - housing the infamous Moulin Rouge and it's distinctive red windmill - along, with it's high kicking can can girls. When some of my American friends are in town they expect to see an Irma La Douce on every corner, instead of the smart and delicate Coffee Houses and Restaurants that now make the 'Hill' such a delightful place to live. Although when I tell them the reputation was gained because local Nuns once made wine here in the 19th Century and almost gave it away to get Parisians hooked on Their own Habit, they feel a little more 'spiritually' drawn to the area. Like a lot of American 'chain' restaurants which have gradually crossed the pond into Paris, Joe Allen (who is) 'no ordinary G.I Joe' and who originally began 'Operation Go Joe' in 1965 out of New York and as a tribute to the US of A adorns his interior redbrick walls with ornate jubilant Red White and Blue memorabilia. These 'Themed Styled' joints either take off and spread like the plague around the globe...or, fade away into the John Wayne sunset and die natural deaths. Joe Allen belongs amongst the former. It's American flavoured menu not only attracts those who are away from the States and suffer from 'gastronomic nostalgia' but the fact - as do all American owned chains - they provide easy, quick and friendly service and end up becoming a haunt for locals who also like 'semi-fast foods' - chicken, ribs, salads, hamburgers, steak and of course, the unstoppable mountain of FRIES - with their unrelenting, humongous portions that could feed the entire population of Ethiopia - so, we are talking the best of wholesome 'American Faire.' This year, as with every year Joe Allen had a special fourth of July themed celebration menu and as us French were their allies during the war of Independence, then I was invited along with a few other local Citizens of the Revolution. Granted, the celebrations were very Razzmatazz American - as one would expect - and any humorous cries of 'Vive la Revolution' from us locals or our 'Vive la Guillotine' and 'Long live Robespierre' chants were drowned out by boisterous Uncle Sam catcalls. Americans really have much louder voices than most races and don't like competition from 'Froggie upstarts' who were merely convenient allies at the time (as we often appear to be.) Having said that, the Americans who were seated at Joes...and there was quite a horde, I can attest to that, promised to help us celebrate 'Bastille Day' next week with the same vigour. I will wait and see if our Citizen Friends put in an appearance. Meal-wise, back at the 'Ranch Faire' on the tables, I enjoyed my Baby shrimp and avocado salad, Chicken breast stuffed with goat's cheese, sweet potato French fries and spinach salad, just because it sounded so devilishly de-lish...and it was - although I felt like the stuffed breast afterwards - yet, I was able to top it all off with apple cranberry crumble and vanilla ice cream just to feel super duper American for the day. Not bad in 'An American Restaurant in Paris!'

Yelp
Joe Allen does exactly what they claim to do -- this is an oasis of America in the middle of Paris. Or almost an oasis, it's still America as seen through the sensibilities of the French. But for all that it's still pretty close. The atmosphere is what you imagine the French version of Tony Soprano dining at. The walls have old Hollywood photos (but unlike the Italian joints in the US the stars tend to be non-Italian too which is a little odd somehow). The bar is a nice spot for a quick beer while waiting for others to show up. Cozy. We were seated promptly and the service was fine throughout the meal. The menu looked good. If there are other expats out there pining for some American food then brunch here is a solid idea. The eggs benedict looked good and definitely all the dishes looked a cut above Breakfast in America. So if you are looking for the food without some of the diner-ese of BoA then this might work better. The bacon cheeseburger was nice. Properly cooked and with hand-cut fries it was a treat. One of the best burgers in Paris? Not really. But it was good. One of the amazing things about Paris is that with all the cheeses in France they insist on putting this yellow gloopy crap on top of burgers. If you aren't going to get it authentic (cheddar) then don't bother and go for something you do well. All in all a good experience and next time I am in the area and pining for some "home" food I will stop by.

Yelp

Yelp
"That's not buffalo sauce," I said. "That's for sure." "It's not barbecue sauce either," she said. "Well, kinda. It's sort of sweet-savory, and there isn't only one formula for barbecue sauce," I said. "You know what? It tastes like hoi-sin!" she exclaimed. "You're right," I said. "At any rate, it's NOT barbecue sauce." "Not buffalo. not barbecue. At least that's real blue cheese, right?" she asked. "Right. And fennel instead of celery? Not bad at all. Very original. But these 'hot wings' - not right at all." We finished our plate of not-buffalo, not-barbecue wings and sipped our ice cold Grolsch as the waitress cleared the table. "Rob-e anar!" I said. "Huh?" "It's Frasi for pomegranate molasses. The sauce tastes like it. Nothin' but pomegranate molasses," I concluded. "Not buffalo. Not barbecue. Not even freakin' hoi-sin. These damn hot wings taste of Persian food!" My rack of ribs arrived. Covered in the same "barbecue" sauce. "This is going to be a long dinner," I said. "At least your burger looks good." She took a bite. "You want a bit?" "Already? Wow, that burger must be fantabulous." I tasted it. "This is the worst hamburger bun I've ever tried. And I say this after having tried many burgers in France. The meat's pretty good, though." "How's your meat?" she asked. "I'll let you know after I get through all this sauce," I said. "At least the baked potato with sour cream and chives is hard to mess up." "Yeah, it looks like a proper baked potato!" "I think the orange thing next to it is a yam or sweet potato. Hell yes!" I put it in my mouth. "How is it?" "Hell NO!" I spit out the offensively stringy sweet potato. "I should've ordered the burger." "The bun ruins it completely." "Oh. At least the rib hidden under all this sauce isn't bad. It's dry, but it's got plenty of meat. Want some?" "I've lost my appetite for American food," she said. "At least the beer's good," I said. "At EUR7 a pint, it better be!" The waitress cleared the table again. "Would you like a dessert?" "Oh, no, we couldn't eat another bite." Honest, but polite, right? So you might be thinking "Why would an American go to have American food in Paris? Couldn't you eat at home?" Sure, but sometimes you want to go out and be served a bit of your motherland, you know? And Joe Allen is known as one of the elder statesmen of American restaurants in Paris. Well, someone should remind Mr. Allen that people now expect much more of American food than they did back when he opened up shop in 1972. I won't be going back. Except maybe for a cold Grolsch. (Which is Dutch, not American.)

Yelp
This restaurant does exactly what you want it to do.... Gives you a nice menu that any American will appreciate!! For the record I also love Breakfast in America. Went with my wife and 2 teenage daughters and everyone left satisfied. I had the club sandwich with Caesar salad and fries.....yummy!!! The rest of our party had the burgers which they enjoyed as well. When you get tired of French food, go here and enjoy. Judging by the crowd, many of whom were speaking fluent French, you won't be alone.

Yelp
Best Burgers I've Found in Paris Living in Paris, I occasionally had a craving for a quintessential American atmosphere. Joe Allen does it without being cheeseball about it. The hardwood decor is comforting, and everything that I've tried on the menu -- mostly the burgers and chicken -- have been authentic and excellent. And I wouldn't say that about just anyplace; there are a number of mediocre "American" restaurants in Paris. Great place for watching the Super Bowl, celebrating July 4, that sort of thing. Great place to bring visiting American guests who need a hamburger. Prices aren't too steep.

Yelp
This place is GOD SENT. We are from the USA traveling with 3 year old and a teething 1 year old. We walked in with screaming baby.. Matt totally accomodated us. They had a back room that we were able to be comfortable in, take care of the boys needs, feed them and then my husband and I were able take shots of tequila Lol Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Went to Joe Allen with my wife and two French friends. The host and wait staff all spoke English well, in addition to French and Italian, so it was easy for us to communicate with them. The food was so-so - nothing terrible, but nothing great. I had BBQ ribs, and my colleague had BBQ chicken. The sauce was somewhat bland and not spicy. My wife had a sirloin, which was cooked correctly to her preference of rare, but not particularly flavorful, and was not provided a steak knife. The one highlight was the wine suggested by the waiter, a California Cabernet, which was pleasant. Overall if you are in the Chatelet neighborhood and need a place to get some basic American food, it would be okay, but is nothing special.

Yelp
The best cheeseburger and the most amazing carrot cake I've found in Paris - I really should try something different on the menu!
