Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"This East Dallas spot popped onto the city’s radar again when some celebrity guests stopped by as part of a wedding in the spring 2025, reminding us how good the golden tacos stuffed with picadillo beef are. The jumbo shrimp brochette platter is also a solid order, which diners can enjoy during dinner; brunch service sees dishes like the Naughty Burrito with refried beans and eggs, breakfast tacos, and Hangover Enchiladas with crispy bacon join the lineup. The decor here is pretty high-brow for Tex-Mex, with turquoise tile on the bar and coastal vibes all over. It also has a partially covered outdoor patio that’s a good hang when the weather allows. Parking can be tricky in this neighborhood, but there is usually a nearby street spot." - Amy McCarthy

Best Tacos in Dallas and Fort Worth | Eater Dallas

"The golden taco at Joe Leo is one of the top crispy tacos one will find in Dallas. It is stuffed with ground beef and served with Mexican rice and refried beans, Tex-Mex platter style. This one is there for when the crunch is the point. Inside Joe Leo is a bit of a hipster Tex-Mex joint, but pretty, and outside is an oversized patio with lots of covered and uncovered seating." - Courtney E. Smith

Amazing Food and Even Better Service! Joe Leo’s is incredible, and Michael was hands-down the BEST server I’ve ever met. He was on top of everything—before we even had to ask, he’d be there with refills, more chips, or just checking in to make sure we were all set. He went way above and beyond, even giving us complimentary sopapillas since it was our first time there. Such a great experience! The food was amazing—piping hot, delicious, and we were seated and served super quickly. On top of all that, I accidentally left my purse behind, and the staff ran after me to return it before I even realized it was missing. I can’t recommend this place enough. We’ll definitely be back

Google
Our waiter Marcos and Edgar were absolutely amazing! They were attentive, friendly, and really made our experience memorable. The food was pretty good as well, but there was a small issue with the silverware. I had to ask them to replace it because it was dirty, and the shot glasses were the same. Other than that, everything else was great, and we truly enjoyed our time!

Matt Hendricks

Google
Knox Henderson vibe without the traffic and crowds and only a couple of blocks away! It’s a Thursday and we sat on the patio. Despite being rather hot outside, it was rather pleasant on the patio because of the fans. The atmosphere was great as well. Had a Mexican Martini to start and it was delicious, also had a Rosarita that was quite nice. Fajitas were delicious and the beans and tortillas were of particular note. Brooklyn really took care of us and all of the waitstaff were very nice and helpful. Did see a few dishes that passed by to other tables that I had to make note of to order next time. Overall this felt like a hidden gem despite being practically in the middle of a busy intersection.

Google
I had a really good time at Joe Leo! The service was really good. Our server made sure my family and I were taken care of, even though they were closing soon. The food was very fresh and flavorful, and the margarita wasn’t too bad neither! I recommend this place to anyone ! Also, if you have time, try out their happy hour! It’s amazing, also!

Google
The ambiance was exciting, the service was amazing and the food was delicious! Edgar provided a whole class experience, he was an awesome server!

Google
The food was amazing, and the restaurant was very aesthetically pleasing. Plenty of space and tables, and they have a bar. Very affordable as well, and I enjoyed their Happy Hour, which is everyday from 3-6p.

Sylvia Weaver

Google
They have a good selection of items for happy hour. Staff was friendly and great service.

Daniel Del Valle Coppel

Google
Had an awesome time at this place! The food was super tasty and the vibe was really chill. What really stood out, though, was the amazing service from Carlos Labrada. He was super friendly, always checking in on us, and just made the whole experience better. You can tell he really cares about making people feel welcome. Big shoutout to Carlos — he’s the kind of person that makes you want to come back. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
We had the best server ever named Michael T. When you walk in the workers greet you and welcome you! They have a beautiful patio to eat as well as inside. The place is beautifully decorated and the food was outstanding. I definitely recommend eating here!

Yelp
Our server Daniela was amazing! Always love coming here for Happy Hour especially since margaritas are like $5.50 and the have bites on their menu! My go to here are their nachos, they're like mini tostadas and are tasty and filling. I prefer the beef fajita or the bean and cheese. If you ever need a happy hour go here, they offer it from 3-6pm everyday that they're open. They also have a huge covered patio with fans and a bar, so there is plenty of seating. Also there's an actual club on the second floor called Club Cactus (I haven't been) but if it's decorated anything like the main floor it's definitely a vibe.

Yelp
The food was awesome, per the usual, and the waiter was very attentive! We were having a reunion of sorts with friends of our of town. The dinner was a last minute plan, but everything turned out perfect.

Yelp
Fun Tex Mex restaurant in central Dallas. Came here for brunch with a friend on a Saturday afternoon and there was lots of seating available. I was greeted and seated immediately. There's complimentary chips and salsa and I ordered the regular queso to start. The chips were made fresh, the salsa was bland. The queso was average, nice to munch on while we talked and looked at the menu. The second batch of chips we got was way to salty, but by that time our food was coming out. For my entree, I enjoyed the chicken verde enchiladas and a coconut ranch water. The enchiladas was very good, the chicken was well seasoned and the really liked the verde sauce. Also, the rice and beans had great flavor. I would definitely stop back in during happy hour. It's a vibrant place, with lots of space and beautiful. I would say it's perfect for a group brunch or date night.

Yelp
First off for being in Dallas, there was a lot of parking. That makes it live and accessible. They have patios with misters to help with the heat. We ended up sitting inside and it's a cute atmosphere. First off, they have happy hour every day! We got the skinny sparkling margarita with the margarita special for half off! So good! Then got the queso. It is delicious. Just different and not too thick. The chips are the thin ones I love. The salsa has a little kick but not too crazy. I ended up with the chicken tinga tacos and all I can say is wow! Absolutely amazing. We also had chicken quesadillas and those were so yummy too. Just overall a fun atmosphere and great service. Will definitely back!

Yelp
My family and I stopped by for happy hour on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant has nice ambiance with a nice outdoor patio. Our waiter, Chris, was cool. He was attentive and never missed a beat. We ordered the beef picadillo nachos. They were served as individual nachos which was good as it wasn't messy. My wife ordered the Shrimp Brochette. It was slightly over charred but still good. I ordered the house margarita with strawberry purée and it did the job. Will be returning.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and both time I've thought my food was great. Especially the chicken tikka tacos. The ambiance is fine, and I like the patio when it's nice out. But service is a bit lacking. Friendly but slow/inattentive. Overall still recommend.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Came here for the first time on a Monday evening around 6 PM. Parking was fine - there's a retail garage. Came just a few minutes before Happy Hour was up, which is daily between 3 PM - 6 PM. It wasn't too crowded & we were seated immediately. Our server greeted us right away & notified us that Happy Hour was still going on. Table chips are on the thinner side. Table salsa has a bit of a kick. Classic Queso - Very much velveta tasting with some other things. Desert Pear Spitz mocktail - Bubbly. Taste like a watermelon jolly rancher. On the slightly tarter side. Not too sweet. House Margarita - Not overly sweet. Tequila is fine. Not bad, also not fantastic. Decently strong. 3/5. Acceptable. Veggie Enchiladas with flour tortillas; topped with queso - Veggie enchiladas are stuffed with green & red bell peppers, red onions, zucchini, & roasted corn. Bean texture is a touch grainy - maybe cooked less than typical. Rice is pretty average - more tomato heavy. Taco Salad with Beef Fajita - Meat could be seared more. Beans are very heavy on the chili. Overall, everything is ok. Not bad, but also not great either. Hit the spot for Tex Mex, but I don't know if I'd recommend this place. Prices were pretty average for the area also. Not sure if I'd come back just for this place. There's plenty of other Tex-Mex places in the area.

Yelp
Another fantastic Tex-Mex place in the heart of Dallas. This one has been on my list since they opened and what better day to check em' out than National Margarita Day?!? There is a small parking lot in front of the restaurant but luckily when that fills up there is also a free parking garage in the same lot. Service was fine, nothing special. Our server was certainly timely and considerate if nothing else. Obviously it's a crazy, chaotic day and everyone is doing their best. On this day, they were having a battle of the margs... Passion Fruit VS. Hibiscus. Passion Fruit was a unanimous winner. I personally couldn't taste much Passion in the Passion Fruit but hey, it was better than the Hibiscus for sure. and now you will find that on the menu in May. I also tried the frozen strawberry margarita with a fire in the hole! shot on the side, perfect combo of spicy and sweet when paired. The outdoor patio was a nice vibe with spacious seating. Perfect for Dallas patio weather. The patio is dog friendly and the inside bar partially opens to the outside. The guac was very fresh, definitely a little tang to it with all that Tajin they put on there but it was still enjoyable. Joe's Queso was the way to go, smooth and creamy. I had the fajitas on this particular visit and they did not disappoint. Topped with some crispy onions for some extra flavor. The tortillas were soo good, very authentic taste. I am looking forward to coming again for brunch or happy hour.

Quoqueze P.

Yelp
Pretty restaurant. IG worthy shots on the way inside. Friendly staff. Great service. But the food was just okay. The salsa had a soapy aftertaste. The chips were very good. Queso just okay. The tortilla soup has a puree base instead of a broth (soup texture) base. I couldn't get past it. Did not enjoy it. The mango nada margarita was a 10/10.
google avatar

Jo Alice B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery. Tortilla soup was thick like pudding Wish I would've ordered fajitas or something with meat so I wouldn't still be hungry
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
This place is great. We had to go because of their claim of the best fajitas in the metroplex. I am not sure if they are truly the best (I've seen no side-by-side comparisons), but they are really good. What's nice is that you get all of the side accoutrements that you would expect with fajitas without having to ask for anything special. The beef was very tender and cooked to about medium temperature. Some stellar standouts include the shrimp brochette, which are served as an appetizer or an add-on with the fajitas. Get them as an appetizer. There are four on the plate, and they come with the best Mexican rice that I have ever had. The pictures of the tacos looked great on Yelp, so I asked our server to bring us one on the side. It did not disappoint! 10 inches long and stuffed with delicious goodness. The chips and salsa are a 10/10. Some may think the salsa is a little too spicy, and it definitely has some bite compared to most. However, I thought it was near perfection. There are some complaints about the cocktails and the pricing, however, every drink that we sampled was delicious and reasonable given the quality of liquor provided. We can certainly try happy hour, but I found none of the cocktail prices offensive. It was basically what I expect to pay at an upscale Tex-Mex restaurant. In a town with a sea of Tex-Mex options, Joe Leo stands out. We will be back.

Dustin H.

Yelp
Food was delicious, Michelada's were delicious, service top notch and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Tammy B.

Yelp
Floors throughout the whole restaurant are filthy. Haven't been cleaned in a long time. Women's Bathroom had water standing behind toilets. Sink had dark hair around drain along with pink mold. Debris in corners of sink and area all around the sink. Beef fajitas came out raw, not medium rare. Manager didn't really seemed too concerned about any of it. Service was so-so.

Samantha N.

Yelp
Tymarah was the best !! Side note, rumor is going around town that Nobody can finish the deluxe. After weeks of training, my husband finished it today with no problem. ;)
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Joe Leo's is a solid spot! The restaurant itself is pretty cute. The server wasn't particularly nice, but he didn't make any mistakes and was polite! The food wasn't out of this world, but nothing was bad. I got the combo fajitas and I thought the chicken was really good - even better than the beef! And the serving sizes were very generous. Overall, if I was craving Tex Mex and was close by I'd come again, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come!
google avatar

Whitney G.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: 4/5 Atmosphere: 3/5 Value: 3/5 ----- Finally tried this neighborhood spot for the first time since moving back to Dallas, and I'll definitely be back - purely for the beef fajitas. So good. The salsa is SPICY - if you have a low tolerance, proceed with caution haha, I started hiccuping almost immediately, but my partner (who loves spicy food) absolutely loved it. Chips good. Drinks were okay (would recommend checking their happy hour out), and also liked the queso - more flavorful than most. My partner got the deluxe special and it was a TON of food (two people can definitely split it), and it was all tasty but just ok in my opinion (but I'm definitely not the expert). Definitely recommend the fajitas (1 order for 2 people) - worth the price upgrade for the beef! Cooked to perfection. Parking is outside - there's a small lot, or there's a retail parking garage right across that lot which is free. Atmosphere could be updated - it feels like it's trying to be fancy without quite succeeding (the chairs are pretty uncomfortable).

Yelp
We had a fantastic time at Joe Leo. Our waiter, Michael, was not only attentive but also hilarious, keeping us entertained with his great jokes. The food was delicious and authentic, especially the fajitas! Michael's excellent service made our evening memorable. Highly recommend this place for great food and fun vibes!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food, and service! Jasmine was a great server, and we had a wonderful dining experience! Thanks Jasmine!
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
This place is so average and mediocre. Happy hour margs are LIFE!!!! But other than that food is not too good just average. Better off trying somewhere if you're hungry.
google avatar

Chalo S.

Yelp
This place was awesome ! I'm a real Mexican from Tamaulipas Mexico . We are not much into Tex mex . But this place is definitely worth the trip from Desoto tx. The food was amazing! I don't know how to describe it . But it was really good a good time ! My wife said ! We have to come back !

Hannah S.

Yelp
Michael h is the best server ever!!! Was so nice and welcoming, food and drinks were amazing, but definitely coming back because of his amazing hospitality. If you ever go in request him!
google avatar

Charis S.

Yelp
I never knew this place even existed, and I'm so happy I found it...ESPECIALLY for happy hour! We celebrated National Tequila Day here, Happy Hour EVERYDAY (even on the weekends) from 3pm-6pm, $5 margs and $5 select bites, which includes nachos and queso. The taco salad was really really good, our waiter Matt was the best, super friendly and attentive, great attitude, super nice, we'll be back soon to ask for him and have a seat on the patio or at the bar, both are a vibe!

Isabella R.

Yelp
They must've changed chefs or ingredient choices because the food is nowhere near as good as it used to be. The chips had a very odd buttery seasoning that was off-putting. I ordered the soft tacos, and the tacos were great but the rice was so gross and mushy. The beans had a very earthy taste that we did not enjoy. Other than that, the tacos were good! Disappointing that used to be a top choice for a nice meal but we will not be going back. Tasted completely different.
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
I went for Live Music Friday (6pm-9pm) on the patio. I went a little early to take advantage of their half priced happy hour (3pm-6pm). I wasn't too impressed with the queso, it didn't have much flavor and was super thick. I ordered the chicken enchilada calientes (verde sauce); it was so much food but nothing exceptional. I took about half of it home. Once the music started we lost the ability to mingle at our table, it was so loud you couldn't hear anything from across the table. The server was great, very quick to bring more margaritas and refill the chips and salsa.
google avatar

Caitlyn D.

Yelp
Rico was our server. Very attentive to keep our drinks refilled and plates cleared off!! Our food was great and we were well taken care of!
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
Terrible spot in Dallas. Reserved ONE MONTH in advance an outdoor table and was not given one until I complained. No sorry or anything. Waited 20 extra minutes for this table (that I already reserved) Food service was slow and they missed one of our meals and blamed it on the kitchen "being behind". We were all done when the one kid in our party finally got his food. Never checked in on us, or made things "right". Asked to speak to a manager at the end and they said "it will be a while". When I told them I would pay when I spoke to one, all of a sudden, they were available. Came out an explained our situation and he said "ok, I'll be right back...never came back. We paid our bill, and left. Never again. Beware!
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
The food gets 2 stars, the cleanliness of this place gets -1000 stars. There are dead flies everywhere around our table. We didn't notice until now, and flies flew around me every time we ate. We were sitting inside as well. This place is disgusting and the health department should get on this. There's a dead flies on my table

Yelp
Subject: Disappointing Experience at [Restaurant Name] Dear Management, My fiancé and I were excited to dine at your restaurant tonight in hopes of enjoying some great food. However, our experience upon entering the establishment was disheartening. Upon walking in and asking for a table, we were greeted with a very sour attitude from the hostess. When we inquired about the wait time, we were met with a dismissive response indicating that it would be "a really, really long wait." This is not the first time we have encountered such attitude from the hostess, and regrettably, it has become a recurring issue. As loyal patrons, it pains us to say that we will not be returning to your establishment. We sincerely hope that this feedback reaches the owner and prompts a reevaluation of the service standards upheld by the staff. We believe that providing constructive feedback can contribute to the improvement of the overall dining experience for future customers.

Mark C.

Yelp
Would have appreciated having knives along with the fork that was rolled up in the napkins. Additionally servers need to be trained to bring all the meals out at once, instead of one at a time.
google avatar

Nicholas L.

Yelp
Despite reaching out the business multiple times like the owner requested, I have not heard back from them. The owner clearly copy-pasted that response with no intention of actually doing anything. Avoid this place

Camee P.

Yelp
We met some friends who were in from out of town. They wanted Tex Mex and we had heard about this place. The service was fair, nothing bad happened. It was slow considering we were the only table in the place for over an hour. The food though was a shock at how bland it was. Honestly, we wish we would have taken them somewhere else with better flavor.
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
Service was great. DO NOT COME HERE FOR DRINKS unless it's happy hour. $11.49 for a HOUSE MARGARITA? HOUSE! Their happy hour is $5. No wonder why this place has dropped in business. I live across the street and nowni know why it has taken a hit. that's ridiculous. Almost $12 for a house marg. Go to Chueys down the road. $6.49 for a House Marg.

Tessa L.

Yelp
I was greeted with delightful ambience, live music, and the smell of fresh baked tortillas. What a lovely dinning experience, only outshined by the service performed by Daniella and Cade.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Joe Leo's Queso was be the good. And the salsa too! If I could buy it by the pint I would. I had the golden tacos and my husband had the fajitas. The shrimp was amazing

Meg S.

Yelp
Loved the bacon wrapped shrimp and the marg martini. Good service, authentic atmosphere

Yelp
My partner and I wanted to give this place another shot hoping for a more positive result and unfortunately it was worse than the first time. This time we made sure to go after brunch hours on a Saturday so that we could experience different menu options. Still a nice ambience and decor so if you are going for vibes only this is the place to be. But everything after that was not so great. Our waitress upsold us to the Joe's Queso (includes guac and picadillo), we remembered liking the queso so we were like sure okay why not? We received the queso and noted the following: 1. It was lukewarm and 2. there was no picadillo. We had to wait for our waitress to come back to let her about missing picadillo and lukewarm queso and her solution was not ideal. Only after a specific request to take the queso and replace it did we receive the correct menu item (although still lukewarm; I'm convinced maybe this is how it is served?) Still wish the chips were sturdier for the queso. For entrees we had Beef Faijitas Nachos & Enchiladas Calientes. I asked for nachos with no pico (it's clearly listed as being included with this menu item) and my waitress wasn't even aware it came with this item. Nachos were just okay, fajita meat could have had more seasoning in my opinion. My partner ordered a sour cream chicken and sour cream shrimp enchilada. She stated the chicken enchilada was okay but nothing special; however, she was highly disappointed din the sour cream shrimp enchilada. This enchilada was stuffed with veggies and cheese with a cold shrimp topping (think shrimp ceviche) which was not mentioned on the menu. We asked the waitress if this was the correct enchilada and she was not sure. Overall, I would say decor + drinks (and queso when it's hot) might be worthwhile but probably not good enough for me to visit again. I'd also recommend that the staff be more familiar with the menu.

Kyle A.

Yelp
If the happy hour specials are $5 why when the bill comes the drinks are ringing up 5.65 ? The food isn't good either at all. drinks don't taste good . First time there and last . Maybe fix the signs as well not read $5 happy hr margs when in fact they're not . Not arguing about the .65 per drink but I'm pretty sure that's illegal having one price and charging another
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
Okay... just skip this place and go to Gloria's. Came with a friend and was excited because this spot is very popular on Instagram and it's regular inside. We went in the evening and it felt like the waiters had a crazy Saturday. The service was slow at first, but our waitress was very nice once we got her attention! The drinks were good. My food was trash.. I'm sorry. I got the shrimp enchilada and it was filled with grilled veggies and 3 shrimp. Wish I knew that before. The "sour cream" sauce on top was just melted cheese... chips and salsa were good though. I just don't think I will be back..
google avatar

Virginia P.

Yelp
This is a great place to visit anytime but def better to catch the happy hour specials Tymarah is a great waitress !

Mariah C.

Yelp
The food was excellent but the service/server was amazing. Michael is the reason I would come back get jokes and service.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
It seems like people come here mostly for the ambience which is pretty nice, both indoors with the hanging vines and outdoors, but outside of ambience everything else was subpar. The food was standard tex mex but overpriced for what you were getting. I ordered the chicken verde enchiladas and Joe's queso. The enchiladas were very average and the queso was pretty good but overpriced. It is similar to the queso at Torchy's just double the price and definitely not as good. The service was sporadic. Our server was very kind but seemed overwhelmed--there were not many servers in general. It was hard to get her attention whenever we needed something and would come back asking what we needed after we already told her. All in all, the food is average, service average for the price you're paying, and it feels like you're paying for the decorations. I don't think I'll be going out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Ali L.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday night without a reservation and had around a 20 minute wait for a group of 3. Apparently the ingredients are farm fresh locally grown or something like that (couldn't hear our waiter that well). We got the queso as a starter, which had a unique taste compared to regular queso so if you're expecting regular queso, it's a little different but I liked it. The salad they start you with is also pretty good, I liked that it had a kick of spice to it. I got the Shrimp Boca Bowl as a main, and everything was pretty tasty all together and tasted fresh. However, it only comes with 4 shrimp for a pretty big bowl. Service was regular, overall pretty good.

Adie S.

Yelp
The wait staff was very nice but the hostess staff, not so much! Maybe she was just having a bad day though. It was very rainy! I liked their queso, margs, and their salsa! My table and menu was a little dirty. Also the napkin had mysterious brown marks on it. Fajitas were good but not the best I've had. I would have liked the chicken fajita meat to be a bit more juicy. I would probably return to give them another chance.

Samantha G.

Yelp
Delicious food! Salsa is to die for! Sour cream enchiladas were amazing, the sear on the shrimp is so good! The street corn, however, needed to be stirred before serving ! I think 1/2 of my bowl was chopped onion! Service was slow, I sat at the bar top and the bartender was more focused on the other employees congregating at the table behind the bar. Took a long time for a drink and even longer to receive silverware with the entree. All in all though, would come back, the food was that good!!
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
When I first moved to Dallas, Joe Leo's had just opened down the street and was the hot new place to try. Because of the lack of reservation system, the wait was anywhere from 1.5-3 hours depending on the night. Now, almost a year later, you rarely have to wait at all - a true testament to the disappointment of the cuisine. We've been to Joe Leo's five or six times and each time left disappointed. The servers are rude and many times unwilling to even ask the kitchen if certain food modifications are possible (like beef instead of brisket on the quesadillas). With so many Dallas TexMex joints, it's hard to compete with such a mediocre experience.

Miss K.

Yelp
Service is HORRIBLE!!!!! Went for happy hour on Saturday and was completely disappointed no one knew the drink of the month. We asked the waiter he said he only works occasionally and normally works at the rustic. No other servers wanted to help. The manager was visible once. Tables were not being cleaned and had to ask multiple staff members to help clean the table. I was told to ask my waiter. I follow the owner and his wife on social Media and convinced my friends to join me to only be embarrassed by the service. Staff was rolling silverware and pulling a veggie from dinning area.

Yelp
Hispanic cuisine is one of my favorites and they defined it very well at this establishment. The chips and salsa was the star of the show, idk how they hand that shit out for free as finger food when it SHOULD be a menu item. The queso was delicious, I got so full off that stuff I could get a real food item but that should tell you enough about how wonderful this place is!!! The drinks are also amazing, and reasonably priced. Our server Adam was quick and communicative and while he said he was new I surly couldn't tell. I didn't get a change to take a photo because I ate the food as soon as I saw it it looked so good. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for some quick eats or a good drink without breaking the bank! (Interior design is a sight to see!)
