Best Places to Eat Jamaican-inspired Cuisine on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast

"A casual eatery where tender oxtail is served in the classic Caribbean pairing with rice and beans, delivering the rich, slow-cooked flavors many seek when craving traditional Afro-Caribbean comfort food." - Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart is an award-winning food and travel journalist. If you're looking for delicious food in every dish, deep authentic flavors, and friendly service this is the place to go. I've gone here twice and I'm only in town for 5 days. The oxtail & chicken plates are both delicious. You can tell both items were slow cooked for hours with the layers of flavor. The nachos were pretty delicious too. They're fresh juices hit the spot on a warm day.

It was midweek and my husband and I weren't perticularly hungry but didn't want stay in. After all it Puerto Viejo, get out and mingle!!! We were walking down one of the small streets leading to the main street from our Airbnb. Yes, one of those streets that if I were in a place NOT Puerto Viejo I would be a lot more nervous, but here it's just another street that needs common sense navigation. That when we spotted Joe's, a small cozy and inviting space- definitely not pretentious. We sat down and were offered the menu right away. It was Jason who helped us and informed us that the menu is his mother's Caribbean recipes. I ordered the ribs and my husband ordered the oxtails. We normally opt for vegetarian meals, but we felt like tasting Caribbean as recommended by Jason. While we were waiting it started to rain and we needed to move further in to avoid getting wet. Then my mom called and I needed more privacy, again we moved further into the seating space. Staff was super patient with all our moves. When our meals came out, I forgot I wasn't hungry. The smell made my mouth water and cleaned my plate. Hubby cleared his plate too. We had a little of the Caribbean sauce left and I didn't want to waste it, it was soooo goood. I asked for me a few to go container. They do staff obliged, no questions, no eye rolls. In fact, she was a sweetheart and told me she add a little more for me. I added it my white rice the next day for a great side at home. Fantastic experience. I highly recommend it.

This place was amazing! We just wanted to see what they had, and the owner went above and beyond explaining the menu to our large group. He took our orders quickly and made sure we had confortable sitting all together! The food was so good! And beautiful! And they checked on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed. A must try is their juice! I have no idea what fruit it was, but it is to die for! My friends and I will definitely be back soon for the great food and service!

Stopped in here for dinner by chance as the other place we hoped to go to was closed, and ended up having the best meal of the trip, for very reasonable price! Get the pull-apart ribs with Caribbean sauce - would come back to Puerto Viejo just for this meal. Only downside - bring some mosquito spray.

Best food we ate in PV so far. Super flavorful. There weren’t many vegetarian options so the chef went out of his way to make a delicious vegetarian quesadilla. The hot sauce was delicious and the people very friendly. Highly recommend.

Had a burger and shakes. The burger was moist and full of flavor, as were the shakes. We plan to return to try something new on the menu and order a couple more shakes.
