Riverside Taco Company Opens in Old Town With a Waterfront Taco Trailer - Eater DC

"In other ARP news, Joe Theismann’s Restaurant is undergoing renovations. The restaurant group bought an equity stake in the 33-year-old business from the legendary Redskins quarterback last year. The 7,800-square-foot steakhouse next to the King Street Metro will add a new island bar with 20 draft lines. Steak-and-burger mainstays will be joined by newer items like pan-seared salmon, poke bowls, Southern fried chicken salad, and bottomless brunch bars. Theismann’s will stay open during its months-long overhaul, operating as a pop-up bar called JT that serves happy hour and a pared-down menu of core dishes. Renovations are projected to finish by mid-September, lining up with kickoff of the NFL’s 100th season and Theismann’s 70th birthday." - Tierney Plumb

Really nice spot with great vibes and a warm, welcoming interior. Great tables for a sit down dinner and also a nice bar to check out sports. PJ our server was awesome and helped us explore the menu, much to our benefit. Def will come back here next time I’m in town. Make sure to go for the sunset, it can be a great view from the window area tables. Crab dip 10/10 make sure to get pita bread with it. Meatloaf 10/10 sauce is really good. Personal Pizza (def a personal size) 10/10 cooked perfectly Drinks 10/10 hit the spot and were strong, thanks bartender. Good place for a business meeting, date, or just hanging out with family and friends.

Google
We had a wonderful experience at Theismann’s. They accommodated our party of 6 with ease. Great views of games, food was great, and the waiter, Al, was amazing. He was efficient, knowledgeable of not only menu, but also the history of the Commanders and Joe Theismann’s role as a former player. Get the desserts. You won’t be sorry.

Google
We haven’t been for a year. Wanted a quick lunch and we happen to see street parking next to it. The food is not bad. It’s consistently average. We had the fried pickles, rack of ribs, meatloaf, and house burger. Fried pickles were super salty. Service was perfunctory but our server was personable.

Google
It's hard to rate a restaurant based objectively on the menu, name and one dish. But I'll try. This is a good upscale sports bar place with a good menu and I lucked out on a Monday in the late dinner hour while there still some vibe. IDK why I give it 4 stars. Maybe because that's what a sports bar gets from me, max. The simple Club Sandwich (because I could not decide on any other of the great options.) was really great but sourdough bread would IMO make it fantastic. Restaurant bottom line: It's good but if JT's name wasn't on it, it would be a high end Applebee's.

Google
I liked this very social spot. My service was good, the tv's had sports playing, and it was very social with a lot of people meeting up to socialize after work. I ordered the all-American burger. I had the perfect view of outside activity and the tv's. My burger was good and flavorful. I even got to see some of the memorabilia for Theisman during his career. I am old enough to enjoy his career, and unfortunately, see the play that ended his career. You cannot un-see that!! I would recommend this place for the food, the social aspect, and to see some of the memories of his career.

Google
It was fine for the price. Had the ribs and it was alright. The desert was great tho really liked the apple crumble cake.

Love this place! Good food and great staff. If you looking for delicious, but simple menu, I highly recommend Joe Theismann Restaurant.

Google
Still a great place with great food, it's been a DC staple for as long as I remember. I had a delightful cheese bread app with a huge Greek salad, and loved both.

Yelp
Love coming here. Neighborhood staple. I live around the corner and it's my go-to on late work nights post metro to grab a bite and bev before crashing at night. Bartenders Tracy, Victoria, Jen, and Carly are the best and provide great service. One suggestion from the neighborhood- please please bring back nachos. We beg you. No one in the area serves them. Make them fancy. Make them basic. We don't care. We just miss them. Oh oh! And get a tennis channel??

Yelp
On two recent lunch visits, service is not as good as it used to be. For example, on my first visit, we were a party of two and ordered two salads. From order to getting food to the table, it took 45 minutes. From being done eating and waiting for the check, another twenty minutes, for a total of 90 minutes. On last visit, party of 6, sat down at noon. I quickly explained we would need to order fast because we only had one hour to eat. We ordered six salads which showed up at 12:48, so I had to order a to-go box and the check. I guess Theismann's is no longer the place for lunch, unless you have a lot of time. If the service time doesn't improve, you will lose out on the professional lunch crowds.

Yelp
Fruit flies, sticky floors, and the bartenders are too busy doing everything to provide service. Unfortunately, this place had a great French Onion Soup with shredded meat, so I would go back. But now I know to order everything immediately.
google avatar

Yelp
Joe T's is a great bar & grill restaurant with a large bar, big screen tv's and a great Happy Hour. This is a great place to bring friends to enjoy a great atmosphere and it gets busy so you can all have a great time. I love their wings, burgers, salads and steak. Staff are friendly and come around often to check on you. Their Onion Rings are great also. Come here to have fun and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
The Rueben was great. I got the sauerkraut and dressing on the side. The corn beef was very tender melt in your mouth

Yelp
Wow! Exemplary meal, drink, and service, even though it's happy hour/dinner time! I had the Chicken Louisiana (jambalaya with a cream sauce), drink called "start spreading the news", and server named Yessenia. All amazing!!!

Rue P.

Yelp
Very nice restaurant- very sarcastic male Hispanic waiter- and slick cook .... don't get him- short with glasses.... Placed the order of Chicken tenders appetizer- he asked me 3 times are you getting anything else- I guess he was so worried about his tip- Wow! Refried burnt Chicken tenders and played stupid- It's sad - being a certain color - you're treated with the BS- in 2025.....

Yelp
Came here for drinks but ended up ordering food to go. I kept seeing the servers pass with food, and it all looked and smelled amazing. I gave in and ordered a crab cake and fries, as well as buffalo wings to go. Everything tasted great! Even the ranch dressing was the bomb, it wasn't squeezed straight from a bottle . I had a margarita and a prosecco which were both tasty. The Prosecco bubbled from beginning to end. The restaurant was pretty dark, but it did appear to have great ambiance. It wasn't packed found a spot at the bar right away.

Charmaine S.

Yelp
EAT HERE! Spicey PEI mussels appetizer: SO GOOD! The sauce was amazing....dip the bread in the sauce! Pull apart cheese garlic bread (comes with marinara sauce) appetizer: I LOVE this BREAD! New England clam chowder soup: lots of taste! Not as thick as how I usually would like it, but I would order it again. Fish and chips: lots of fish meat. Tartar sauce was GOOD! Fries good. Cole slaw was yummy! Husband thought had too much batter on fish, but I enjoyed it. Mimosa: with pineapple was very good. Red wine house: good!

Yelp
Had a great experience for dinner here Sunday evening with JP as our server. Food was fast and a great menu. Had several drinks and the fried pickles were yummy. Then had entrees which were all very good. We got to reserve seating outside which I appreciated. I like that the restaurant is at the top of king street so we can find decent street parking around the corner. Brunch is still my favorite but we had a great dinner.

Yelp
This place was so good that I did a review as soon as I got in the car. A very nice upscale bar. Cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Bernard provided excellent service. Every thing we ordered was absolutely delicious and we are definitely returning in the near future.

Yelp
Who knew! On a quest to try knocking off as many bookmarks off my list this 2024, I ended up at Joe Theismann's. It was girls night out and we wanted to watch the Kentucky Derby, we heard this was the place to do just that and our friends were right! First, yes, make a reservation. This place was packed to the window, to the wall. Service: Excellent the entire visit! Ambiance: We dressed up, never know who you'll see, but we likely could have dressed down. The place is an upscale sports bar. Never hurts to be the best dressed. Shrugs. Let's get into it! Appetizer: Broiled Chesapeake Crab Dip - Super Delicious Main Entree: 45 Day Age Filet - Perfection! Chicken Louisiana - Excellent! Dessert: Warm Apple Crisp - Excellent! Drinks: La Marca Prosecco Lemon Basil Martini Would definitely come back! Very inexpensive girls night. Couldn't even spend $200 if you tried with multiple rounds of drinks. Food is fantastic and with these price points I know why this place stays packed! Banging at a Bargain.

Yelp
We had a really great lunch here. Our server and the manager were both sweethearts, very attentive and welcoming. The American burger and fried chicken Cobb salad were awesome
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Classic American restaurant with a large bar area + a solid selection of hearty portions of American food I came here with my GF and her sister and we split an appetizer of apple fritter donuts and each got entrée as well. Everything was delicious and none of us could finish all of our food because the portions are so generous It seems like the place fills up during football games, so plan accordingly Outside seating as well
google avatar

Yelp
Had an excellent dinner at Joe Theismann's Restaurant in Alexandria, VA. For those not familiar with the name, Joe Theismann is a football legend he was the Quarterback and Super Bowl Champ for the Washington Redskins. His restaurant opened in 1975 and is located across the (King St-Old Town) Metro Station. After lunch/dinner, you can catch the King Street Trolley to visit the Water Front in Historic Old Town Alexandria. The trolley is free and runs every 15 minutes. There are many shops and restaurants on the Water Front. We recommend trying the following: -Calamari Appetizer -45 Day Aged Filet Mignon -60 Day Aged 12 oz NY Strip -French Onion Soup -Apple cobbler dessert -Peanut butter cheesecake with chocolate. It was a bit salty for me but my hubby enjoyed. -Pink Cadillac Margarita Great service and nice ambiance. There's indoor & outdoor seating. Really enjoyed the football decorations and memorabilia of Joe Theismann. We look forward to dining here again. Give this place a try! Happy Yelping :)

John A.

Yelp
Bleh! How in the world do you screw up a cheeseburger? Service slow, grilled asparagus apparently made from real chunks of wood. Had spent 8 days on the Appalachian Trail dreaming of a sitdown meal, and made the vast mistake of having it here.

Yelp
There's a lot of okay things about this place. Service is not one of them. Came twice and one time the manager yelled at us. And the other time we were met with lukewarm service throughout the night. The ambiance ain't bad. There's a bunch of seating across the room. Some tucked in the corner. Some by the bar. Some on the "upper" level which is just a few steps up. There are high tops and low top tables. The real steal here is the happy hour. It's Monday thru Friday and between 3pm and 7pm. $8 for specialty cocktails. $5 well drinks and beers. There is a limited appetizer menu which ranges from 5 to 10 dollars. Or you can get a set menu of 5 appetizers for $32. Most of which are fried. That consist of: 6 Buffalo style chicken wings - this was okay. I'm a wing connoisseur and it wasn't that great but I've had much worse. Chicken tenders - this was my second favorite. The sweet and sour sauce that comes with it was fantastic. Fried pickles - wayyyyyy too salty. I barely ate them. Vegan chorizo taco - better than I thought. A bit dry but not too bad. Only one comes with it. Crab dip - only got through half of it. It was nice but definitely meant to be shared between two people. The chips were a bit salty which added the flavor needed for the crab dip. There are TVs all around the bar. Came for MNF and they originally didn't plan to have the sound on but enough people complained and they decided to do it. With the name being attached to the restaurant, I expected it to be a bit better but the prices were good enough for me to overlook it all.

Yelp
I loved my clam chowder and pita with hummus. The chowder tasted real and rich. Atmosphere of the restaurant was great and our service was awesome.

Yelp
Yep, we did it again. Like for Thanksgiving, we did buffet on Christmas Day, this time at Theismann's ($59/adult). This is our second visit to Theismann's. The first time was Thanksgiving 2020, when we came in the afternoon and they had already run out of turkey. This time there was plenty of food. Our server was exceptionally good, the highlight of our visit. The food was decent, except for the ham which had tough inedible edges. The dessert bar was very small: just apple cobbler, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin pie, unsweetened mousse and a fruit board. In the words of the elderly diner seated at the next table, the dessert selection was "pitiful". Still, Theismann's is popular, and when we left at 1:00pm, every table was taken.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Joe Theismann's is a really good restaurant for a date night. They had a lot of variety in their menu, and the service was great. The giant cheesy garlic pull-apart bread is a MUST for an appetizer. Everything our party ordered was delicious. We'll definitely be back again in the future!

Yelp
Extremely upscale bar in downtown Alexandria. Really impressed with the ambience, atmosphere, overall look. Food was amazing top quality, filet mignon, salmon, blackened, tilapia, pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches. Service was very, very good. The bartender was great and the place was super clean. The parking was typical city block parking. Find a spot maybe walk a block or two. Overall 10 out of 10 I go back.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Overpriced for what you get. Take it or leave it. Paying for location. Just one travelers opinion.
google avatar

Orquidea R.

Yelp
Love this place for its food and drinks. Spacious inside and out on the patio on warmer weather days. Everything from burgers to salads are a great choice. Staff is very friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service here tonight, we ordered one fish and chips and a Reuben sandwich. The food arrived in less than five minutes! Very good atmosphere will come back someday.
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
Jennifer at the bar was great! She was perceptive to the customers and knew when they were ready for food or drink. We ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich and asked to split it. Good move - half a sandwich with fries and all the sauces on the side was a perfect selection. I like the bar area - if I could, I would recommend drapes / curtains on the outer windows to minimize the glare on the TVs. Parking on the street is free on Sundays - but if you park in the garage ($15), the restaurant will take care of the first 3 hrs for you.

Yelp
Meh, the food here gets a passing grade but I don't think that's their focus or way of attracting repeat customers if that's the goal. It's a cool space, I think most people come here for watching sports or trains. They have outdoor bar stools facing the station which is pretty neat. Given the location and food quality though, it does feel like they are catering to travelers who are just passing through and will never come back anyway be it train or hotel crowd.

Steve B.

Yelp
Great potential. Good, but not exceptional food. Disinterested staff on a mid-summer (early) Monday evening . You won't be disappointed if you like the (bar type/comfort) food offered on the menu. I enjoyed it and so it seamed for everyone nearby my table. Above average, but not by much. I classify this as a "safe" on the run dinner option. (Business travelers especially included)
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
My furbies enjoyed the ambiance Cheesy pretzels good Our waiter was nice :3 All hail Joe

Yelp
I love it when a spur of the moment plan works out. So my BF and I decided to try this place on a Wednesday night because of its location near the Alexandra Amtrak. There's not a lot of street parking but there is a parking garage down the street. It wasn't very crowded which is my preference when I first visit a restaurant...love my server to be able to give me attention. And I was not disappointed. It's kinda dark so it's nice if you're on a date and want to watch sports. We sat at a high top behind the bar so we could watch basketball. Our server, Justin, appeared with the biggest smile and great energy. We started with drinks. Justin helped me decide on the Cherry Blossom Sangria and it was quite tasty. For food I had the vegetarian chorizo pizza with a greens & feta salad. My BF had the fish & chips. Everything was delicious. So glad we decided to stop in. Justin's energy was so positive and everyone was extremely friendly. We'll definitely be back again. I just loved the atmosphere.

Yelp
Stayed across the street at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town. Went twice and had no issues with getting a seat at the bar. Service at the bar was great, ambiance was fitting given its Joe Theismann's restaurant. Had the onion rings, thought they were heavy breaded and easily broke in pieces. Very greasy and onions were too big to handle, definitely don't recommend. For main entree, the Cuban was decent and delicious, not my best but had no issues...kind of forgettable. For desert, had the apple crisp which was good and plentiful...would definitely recommend if you have the appetite for desert. Overall, good restaurant and I have no hesitation about going back.

Yelp
The salad I ordered had a lot of dressing but the taste of the fried chicken was great. Great place for big groups. So tasty! Jp was a great waiter with great recommendations!

Yelp
Came back and this place still has great service! Food is also very good! Everything we tried was delicious. Big hit was the pull apart bread!

Yelp
So yesterday we started our Alexandria trip with a birthday brunch of sorts. Mom's birthday had passed so we wanted to make sure that she had the drink that she didn't get to have on her day. So she and my sister chose the Mimosa flights while I chose the Bloody Mary. It indeed was the best I'd ever tasted so I let mom try and we ended up swapping drinks. For appetizers we did the crispy calamari and cheesy garlic bread the better of two. Entrees my sister had the Ny strip and Fries I had the French onion and mom had a southern fried chicken salad this place was delicious and they even provided my sister and I with complementary desserts that weren't the best tasting but the meal overshadowed them.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
We dropped in to Joe Theismann's and snagged a seat in the bar/lounge, where we were lucky enough to be served by Paige. Paige was an absolute gem--fun, sociable, and kept our glasses far from empty. She even gave us the lowdown on some sister restaurants, which we're already planning to try! I'll be honest: I walked in with modest expectations. You know how it goes with celebrity-owned places--sometimes it's all about the name on the door. But I'm thrilled to say, I was 100% wrong. This place is now on my favorites list, and here's why. First up, the calamari. Perfectly tender--none of that rubbery chew you get even at the coast. Living by the ocean, I know good seafood when I taste it, and this calamari was downright perfection. Then came the star of the night: the 45-day dry-aged filet mignon. That steak had to come from the happiest cow on the planet--it was that tender, like "a mother's love" kind of tender. My only complaint? I wanted it to be bigger! Let's not forget the sides! The Parmesan potatoes were the chef's kiss, and the Caesar salad was super fresh with zero soggy lettuce in sight. I can't say enough about this place--10/10 recommend! I'll be back for round two (and three... and four...)

Yelp
Okay so I had my birthday meal here with my twin and the food was delicious . Our server was wonderful and didn't rush us when ordering . Even though we came in with brunch we were able to order anything off of the daily menu. Let me tell you about the mimosa flight , delicious is the word for it and the bartender delivers a great buzz I would recommend eating with this lovely gift. The steak was lovely , I am usually a steak sauce type of lady but not today, I ate the steak without any sauce. I even devoured the string beans with that amazing garlic salt seasoning. The ambiance was great with screens showing the Olympics and seats were comfortable and even though people were coming in , it didn't feel cramped. Again I would totally come back. Oh and the chocolate mousse cake...if you love chocolate and I mean LOVE chocolate this is going to be your jam. It is rich and with that whip cream it's the perfect pairing. Will be back ...

Yelp
Best buffet breakfast in the DMV. It's not even a breakfast. It's a feast. Fresh omelettes, fresh waffles, roast ham, real bacon, real maple syrup!. It's all hot . It's all fresh. There's chicken wings. Im considering changing my work schedule to make myself available for this breakfast.
google avatar

Joseph O.

Yelp
Came here to eat with some friends and didn't know what to expect. I ordered the Theismann's burger which turned out amazing. For an appetizer we ordered fried pickles. The sauce they give you for dipping was excellent. This place won't disappoint. Great beer options as well. I had their hazy IPa which was delicious!!
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
The food in this place was amazing. Seasoned well and the presentation is average. Staff is helpful and pleasant, and the service is good overall. The ambiance is great! The restie is beautiful for a place with average priced meals. Overall it makes you want to come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Went to the Redskins and Cowboys game!! It was a fun game, but unfortunately, the Redskins lost. We got to eat a lot of good pasta, chicken burger!! The service was great we got to hold a Joe theisman football!!

Yelp
During restaurant week. Had a nice meal. We arrive 530-600 by the time we left it was a full house. Nice view. Waiter was always available when we needed additional drinks or food.

Yelp
We have been here multiple times the past few months. My 99 year old mother likes the outdoor seating, the food, exorcism the crab cakes. To me the burgers are great but the fleet mignon was so tender! Gotta love the smashed potatoes! Everything on the menu is really good... right down to the in house made peanut butter cheesecake! The asthmatic is fun and friendly. But the real kicker is the service. We have been taken care of by several, all very good. But John g has gone above and beyond consistently. He takes great care of us and makes time to chat work my mother.

Yelp
Theismann's Restaurant was hands down one of the best dining establishments that I have eaten at. The ambiance, the food and amazing service were phenomenal. Our server Eva was an exceptional waitress who was beyond attentive and made the environment welcoming! The manager Kevin is out of this world with his professionalism, expertise with managing this fine establishment and great disposition. Dined 3 times during my stay in Alexandria. Will definitely return. Keep up the great work Theismann's. My son Antonio, My uncle Mario who is Notre Dame alumni absolutely loved Theismann's. Our sincerest thank you for our lovely dining experience. Best, Mary, Antonio and Mario

Yelp
Back again and the food is just as good as I remember. I had to get the grilled salmon again. It was delicious! Caroline was our server and so sweet and attentive. Perfect place for my team and I to enjoy our holiday luncheon.

Yelp
Tonight is my 2nd consecutive night to come in for drinks and dinner. Last night I got the fish and chips off the main menu. Biggest surprise was the fact the Cole slaw was so great. But the fish and chips were solid. I haven't ordered food tonight yet, leaning toward the all American burger. Updated 5/15: Props to the business for responding in under 24 hours to my previous review. Being attentive and interested in customer feedback is a strong indicator of an engaged business manager. I made a negative comment about the lighting and sound system that I have removed in this update. More of an annoyance than a deal breaker. And I know management acknowledged the feedback and probably that I also may or may not have had 1 or 2 (ish) cocktails on board when I posted the review. Last night I did get the burger w/ side of award winning cole slaw. Perfection. Tonight I'm leaning toward the fish & chips again. Will edit with an update. Added an additional star to my review for the response to my previous review. (Note to business owner, I'm sitting at bar and there are several cute girls across the bar (window/street side) but I can't see them because of the lighting situation). ;)

Yelp
Joe Theismann has been on my "to do" list for a while. After an event close by, I decided to pop in and give it a try. Classic decor, traditional design for a steakhouse, so no frills. Upon entry, I was greeted by a friendly host who assured me that no matter what I ordered, it would be delicious. Seated at the bar the bartender recommended the pink Cadillac margarita. If I didn't have a decent drive after dinner, I would have ordered another. The bartender recommended two entrees that have been on the menu for 30+ years but since they were "Cajun" based, I passed. This Louisiana native didn't want to take any chances. Luckily, they were offering a new menu item in celebration of Valentine's Day. I ordered the hangar steak, medium rare, and it was DELICIOUS!! I left no crumbs. For a first timer, Joe did his thing and I would definitely visit again.

Meri H.

Yelp
We had a great experience with a large group of colleagues. Tommy was phenomenal & so accommodating to all of us while never batting an eye at all of our different needs. Tommy is the best & makes your trip to Theismann's so worthwhile!

Yelp
Shout out to Carson! He was the definition of an awesome and great server! He was polite, courteous, articulate, personable, polite, respectful and very professional. He should be training other servers on how to be successful at waiting on others. Marcus was the perfect manager!!

Yelp
The food was great the service excellent, and I sat outside in some beautiful weather. No complaints other than the drink just didn't taste correct. I would still go back next time I'm in town.
