Best Restaurants Off I-80 Between San Francisco, Sacramento, and Lake Tahoe | Eater SF

"If things are going smoothly, drivers will hit the Fairfield stretch of I-80 about an hour outside of San Francisco, and this is a perfect excuse to stretch your legs and get a hit of old-school sandwiches at Joe’s Buffet in Fairfield. Nabiha and Saeb Ziadeh have run this family-owned Fairfield institution since 1982 (although the restaurant goes as far back as 1953), and locals typically go for the French dip sandwich complete with au jus, with a side of mashed potatoes. It’s a short but satisfying menu of hearty sandwiches." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
I was hungry @ 11am, as a full time Uber driver unfortunately I have to eat out a lot. I have had sandwiches for 3 days in a row I was wanting something different, but this place stood out to me on the Google search list, mostly because I haven't seen a sandwich shop with so many reviews sitting at a 4.8 of 5 rating, with zero 1 & 2 stars. So, upon entrance, i don't love the atmosphere, it gives cafeteria with fluorescent lighting & push tile ceiling, flat white walls and ZERO decor, not even a picture on any of the walls that I noticed... which is fine, they want to focus on the food then really none of this is a problem. Their menu, maybe 8 protein choices, maybe 6 kinds of cheese, maybe 6 varieties of bread to choose from, & that's pretty much it... I chose the "Joe's special" which is 1/2 pastrami 1/2 roast beef or.. corned beef I can't remember. Meat warm on cold soft French roll with Swiss. They don't have any fancy sauces except for mayo & mustard, or really much additional toppings except for lettuce tomato red onion & pickles.. & pepproncinis. It's extremely simple & straight forward, which is actually kind of refreshing. Sandwich I think was around $8 or $9..REALLY great price for the Bay area & it's a BIG portion too. Then after you order the sandwich, slide on down the station & pick sides if you want, I got the Mac n cheese & the macaroni salad. They were I think $3.69ish each They did have fountain drinks too which I super appreciate! I got a small bag of lays chips too All together my Joe's special sandwich, 2 sides, chips & fountain drink was only $25. Honestly my meal would have been satisfactory with just the sandwich & the drink for what, like $11 or $12? Yess. The sandwich did come with this sort of dark gravy that I LOVED as well. I'll Def come back here.

Google
The people here are absolutely amazing and their pastrami and roast beef are to die for. If you can get there in March you will be lucky enough to get some of their corned beef. It smells so incredibly delicious from the moment you walk in and their slow roasted meats get sliced right in front of you.

Google
I ordered the French dip which was packed full of meat.... The pictures are accurate with the amount of meat provided. The au jus is delicious... I'd order a vat of that to-go if I could. They have several side options but while there I heard that the combo meal options are no longer provided so, everything is a la cart. The provide s, m and l sizes starting at $3.49

Google
This place always hits the spot; I've been going here since I was a kid and it always is amazing! The French dip is mouthwatering good and I'll always recommend it. Everyone I know loves Joe's buffet and they always have a nice variety of sandwiches

Google
My cousins lived in Fairfield over 65 years ago when I was five years old, we used to go to downtown Joe’s We used to go out to grizzly Island to fish On our way. Stop and get a sandwich. Good old days and the food is just like it was great.

Google
Best sandwiches I’ve ever had in my entire life! They have great side dishes and absolutely recommend getting their Joe’s Special which has freshly sliced pastrami and roast beef. Absolutely delicious

Mari Franklin

Google
First time here, and it definitely didn't disappoint! My husband had been raving about this place from the time we met, and I have to say it lived up to the hype. Absolutely delicious roast beef, delicious sourdough roll, and overall huge sandwich! 10/10!

Google
I asked the guy at the sporting goods store where to get a great deli sandwich because I don't get over to Fairfield that often, and I'm kinda lost over here. So, after he handed me the Trifelter Stabilizers for the Burlyshoot, he thought for a second and spurted out Joe's Buffet...Best sandwiches in town! So, off I went. And you know what...he was absolutely right! 5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆

Yelp
Yeah... this is just awesome spot for a very good meaty sandwich. Nothing fancy. No gimmicks. It is more like a "come and get it" type place that serves great bread with hearty piles of meat and a superb au jus that very rich and deep flavored. Joes has to be my new favorite "whatcha havin" place in upstate CA.
google avatar

Feyon L.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches, especially because of their au jus/gravy. It's got an incredibly beefy flavor that you just can't enough of! I slurped up whatever remaining au jus was left after I polished my half of the sandwich because it was that good. And yes, the sandwiches are huge here! We split a Joe's Special which was a mix of thinly sliced roast beef and pastrami, and we stuffed it with mayo, mustard, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and onions inside a French roll. As if that was not enough, we also got an excellent potato salad on the side that was creamy and tangy. It's a very chill, no frills kind of spot and everyone there was super friendly. We'll be back!

Yelp
I haven't ventured to Joe's buffet in many years. I happen to be in the downtown Fairfield area and I thought I would stop and have a sandwich. I ordered the French dip with provolone loaded with everything on it, including pickles mayonnaise mustard . I must say I was a little disappointed with the flavor. I thought the roast beef taste extremely bland. However, the size of the sandwich was enormous. I ate half there took the other half home and put some barbecue sauce on it. Nothing like sweet baby rays to make things taste better. It helped dramatically however after going to Joe's, I probably would not venture there again. Better choices out there now. It's a shame Joe's buffet has been a staple in the Fairfield downtown area for many years.

Yelp
Joes Buffet is definitely a stop to make when you are in the Fairfield/Suisun area. The sandwiches here is stacked with meat and made the way you like it. I get the pastrami with Swiss cheese, extra pickles, onions , jalapenos and/or pepperoncini. The team is friendly

Yelp
We had the French dip roast beef and it was great! Excellent customer service too. They let my kid sample the roast beef since he wasn't sure if he'd like it, and he ended up finishing his sandwich!

James D.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, food was excellent, sandwiches are piled high with meats. Nothing is hidden when the meats are sliced fresh. Good selection of sandwiches, soups, pastas

Yelp
Ive been coming here for over 40s years and always get the french dip with mashed potatoes & gravy. Today I tried the dinner plate with turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and gravy. It came with a couple rolls & extra au jus gravy. This is my new favorite.. it was very very good and definitely hit the spot on a cold rainy day. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is so delicious. If you are ever in Fairfield and want a sandwich that will fill you up until evening this is the spot. Not your ordinary sandwich joint. Located in down town Fairfield where parking sometimes can be rough. However, you'll need to walk a little back to the car after eating here. They do have parking in the rear of the restaurant with a rear door entrance. They whip you up a freshly sliced sandwich as soon as you walk in. You want about two and a half inches of pastrami, turkey, BBQ beef, or French dip this is the spot. It's an old deli that looks like it's been around since the 70's with a huge seating area. Don't for get to ask the servers for the wide selection of sides and condiments.

Yelp
It's been a while since coming to Joe's. Line was about 20 people deep. Moved very fast. Ladies behind counter are friendly and effecient!! I order roast beef with horseradish, pickle and provolone. Stacked high and totally delicious!! You can always count on Joe's to deliver.

Joaquin F.

Yelp
This was my first time here. The staff at the counter were amazing and very friendly. The food was great. I'll be coming back here for sure.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place because it was recommended by a friend. Pros: You will not leave hungry. The portion sizes are quite ample. The meat is sliced using the deli meat slicer machine per order. The cold salads (potato, macaroni, and green) looked fresh and delicious. The lady who assisted us and Joe were super nice and friendly. Cons: The sandwich had no taste. All that meat (pastrami) and the flavor was very mild. The meat was luke warm. Most of the warm sides looked dry and old. I felt nausea later after eating 1/2 sandwich and potato salad. So I tossed the left overs. Location: Joe's is on a busy street but you can find parking out front. I believe there is parking behind the restaurant because people were entering through the back of the dining room. The restaurant is set up buffet style. Several staff stand behind the steam table serving customers and you pay at the end of the line. After which you enter the adjacent dining room. Overall the experience was okay and 1 day I will give them another shot. Perhaps I will take the sandwich to go next time so I can heat it and doctor it up.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
The sandwiches are off the chain! Fresh and made fight in front of your eyes! I miss Joe's! Moved out of state
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
The place as you walk in looks a bit outdated but the service was great, the workers were welcoming and friendly! It was a very fast service! The sandwich was way bigger than I expected and it was fresh and delicious! The place would look bettef with some decor but other than that is a good spot if you are craving a good fresh sandwich!
google avatar

Dusty C.

Yelp
My personal opinion, every sandwich shop, should take lessons from Joe's. Hands down THE BEST!!!! 10

John F.

Yelp
I was disappointed with my visit a few days before Thanksgiving. We ordered roast beef sandwiches and mashed potatoes. Generous portions of good quality beef, fresh bread. However, the au jus and gravy both tasted like they came out of cans (or the same can) and were gummy and bland. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. I would willingly pay more for fresh ingredients but understand the difficulty of running a small business with today's costs. Service was, as usual, very friendly, helpful, and courteous. Complements to the staff.

Yelp
One of my favorite lunch spots in Fairfield. My usual order is a roast beef sandwich on sourdough. They offer to dip the sandwich in the sauce but I just ask for it on the side. They're consistently great and always pile up the meat on the sandwich. Lunch time always gets busy of course, but the service is quick and there's plenty of indoor seating. Good place for lunch and quality food.

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The green salad is soggy and has too much parsley. The hot items are warm at best. The green beans were also soggy and had too much of a poignant spice. They may opt to serve the salad with the dressing on the side. They staff is polite but I'd appreciate a better quality product for the money.

Yelp
I just finished filling my divorce paperwork. I wanted something delicious to eat a very nice couple recommended Joe's. So I walked down the street and got a delicious Roast Beef and Pastrami sandwich with auju sauce, potato chips and a drink. The woman in the restaurant were very nice friendly and helpful! They cut the fresh slices right off of the meat in front of me nice and fresh! The food was delicious and very filling and I have enough to share with my very good friend later! They brought my tray and walked me to my table! This is an excellent sandwich shop! Give them a try and you will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Ria S.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Fairfield. Opens at 11 am and people line up. This place will not disappoint you. The sandwiches are huge with a stack of meat! You will need to take the rest home. I'm glad my bf took me here. Parking is limited so you might have to drive around in most cases. Ambiance is super divey. Come hungry!
google avatar

Coco L.

Yelp
Definitely an icon in the downtown Fairfield area. The meats are roasted fresh everyday and you can tell by the taste of the sandwich. Been eating here my whole life and never disappoints. Service is always friendly. Would really like to see the place fixed up tho because they deserve it! Joe and his family are great. Try the chocolate chip walnut cookie!

Yelp
Joe's Buffet- Truly a Fairfield, cult classic. The food here is delicious every single time, with huge juicy sandwiches. I recommend the traditional Roast Beef with the incredible Au Jus dip. The sides are also insanely good to where you just can't pass up, even though the sandwich itself is enough to keep you full for the rest of the day. Expect to pay around $12 per sandwich, which I think is totally worth it. The service here is also incredible, with every person who walks in being treated with kindness and respect. You can tell the owners are passionate about their business and care for their customers. With my family being consistent customers at Joe's for over 30 years, they to this day still ask how our family is doing. Lastly, the restaurant has tons of seating, but come at the right time because the establishment gets busy! There's tons of street parking out front or go around to the back where there's additional parking and a door that leads into the restaurant so you don't have to drive around. I could not recommend Joe's enough. The overall atmosphere is a hole in the wall, family owned, OG Fairfield business that if you have not tried yet, run don't walk!!

J E.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. Quick service. I really like the pastrami on rye. Big and tasty. Really worth a trip and good to go or eat there.

Mike M.

Yelp
Great food and great portions. The hot-beef sandwich is no joke as mentioned in nearly every review on Yelp.
google avatar

Dawna M.

Yelp
A local family owned business. They are amazing, u will be very satisfied. Proportions are great. They are fast and friendly.

Brooke C.

Yelp
I'll try to paint a picture! It's counter ordering. You order with the employee making your sandwich. You pick the meat, condiments and bread. Then slide down to sides then pay. The owner is close by and he's very nice and friendly. Because of that, I so wanted to like my lunch, but I didn't The plus side. There's a lot of meat packed in this pastrami sandwich. The bad- it's cold to Luke warm. They give you au jus which I've never had with pastrami, but I tried it. Not flavorful My sandwich side and soda were $20.30 average for today However, quite expensive when I took 3 bites and threw it all away If quantity is what you want and quality nor a hot sandwich is important to you- this may be your place If a hot, or grilled sandwich is your vibe. Move on Sorry Joe. I tried to like it
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Best this place is the best I've eaten sandwiches for a lot of delis and other places but this place takes the win

Jim J.

Yelp
I was excited to try the french dip roast beef after hearing that they were famous for them. Sadly was one of the worst sandwiches I ever had. The meat and bread were both completely cold. A good french dip is on toasted bread with hot beef. The lukewarm instant au jus the sandwich came with was not enough to compensate. The staff were very friendly and the place clean.
google avatar

Trabo S.

Yelp
First time visiting this restaurant. I got the roast beef sandwich mashed potatoes and a drink all for about $20. Slightly pricey , but the sandwich is worth the drive. Next time id skip the side and just have the sandwich and drink. Friendly service great sandwiches!
google avatar

Trev D.

Yelp
Quick service, great food. Really enjoyed the French dip sandwich especially the au juice dip. Sides including the mac and cheese was great. Place was packed and had to share a table with another group. Plenty of parking around the block but can be difficult during lunch hour.

Carmina F.

Yelp
Absolutely best French dip in this area always has been for years blows big H out of the water although they claim to be as good absolutely not never will be. Joe's is number one
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
This is the Joe's Special naked with cheddar and a side of Jus and a small red pasta. First time here, but certainly not my last. The sandwich was loaded with meat, the Au Jus was like demi-glacé, and the red pasta was super nostalgic and made me think of Beef-a-roni in the best way. Check this place out.
google avatar

Sophie Z.

Yelp
I was really excited to try Joes after all the hype that I've heard but I was not impressed. The sandwiches were overpriced, the service wasn't very good and the place lacked overall ambiance.
google avatar

Nicol M.

Yelp
French Dip had a good amount of meat, but they do not know what extra mayo means. Meat has no flavor, Mac salad was decent. (TIP: soak onions in ice water for 15 minutes, takes out the bitter after taste). Service was fast but rushed, it was my first time there. "Buffet" was misleading for a Deli. It was decent though.
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
The best tri tip sandwich with a side of aju. Macroni salad tastes like grandmas. I am forced to write 85 more words. Bathroom super clean, dining room very clean. Line was long buy moved quickly as i came at peek time during lunch
google avatar

Jamie J.

Yelp
So glad this place was recommended to me! I had a French dip sandwich and it did not disappoint! Parking was easy, price was fair and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Siuvao H.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I recently tried Joe's Buffet for lunch this past week, and we were not disappointed. Upon entering we were greeted by the lovely staff behind the counter! I have been told by numerous amount of peers & colleagues to try out Joes, as I just moved to the area. I got myself a 2meat sandwich on a Dutch crunch roll along with a few sides to try. Service was great! Fast and efficient! They have 2 seating areas, both inside, and you can actually park and enter through the back as well, which in my opinion is a plus since Downtown street parking can be a bit of a hassle. Another plus is that they have a table with lids and foil so you can wrap your leftover sandwich to go!! Love the convenience of that! The sandwiches were great! I wasn't too big on the Mac & cheese, it wasn't terrible, just not for me. The roasted potatoes were okay, as well as the potato salad. Overall 8/10!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Awesome sandwich but you better be hungry. Stacked and loaded with roast beef, turkey, BBQ beef, corned beef, Pastrami or Salami. Lots of homemade sides to choose from. The people working there are great! In old downtown Fairfeild. Go there! You will thank me!
google avatar

Arturo C.

Yelp
Joes Buffet is my favorite go to lunch spot whenever I'm in Fairfield. Lunch hour is always PACKED out the ass. However, the line moves quickly, and efficiently. The employees are very polite and helpful, if the customer service was poor and wait time was long it wouldn't have mattered because the food would have been worth it. Joes Buffet will give you the best bang for your buck and very much satisfied.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
I'm so angry that I've deprived myself of this amazing place for so long. Now that I've been here and experienced how amazing their French Dip is, I can see why they've been successful for so long. The interior isn't pretty by any means, but this is one of those places where it doesn't matter. Why? Because the employees are great and the food is fantastic! No need for any fluff or filler. You'll leave full and satisfied. They slice the meat to order and certainly don't skimp on the serving size. They give you A LOT of meat. The au jus is easily the best I've ever had. Flavorful and thick. No watery au jus here. Just the way it should be. Seriously, don't be like me. If you get the chance to go....go. Don't wait. Now that I've been to Joe's, it's one of those "must do" places whenever I come home to visit.

Adam G.

Yelp
Great service, friendly people and giant sandwiches for a good price . You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Fairfield. The staff is very friendly and quick! Don't let the long lines make you turn away, they are fast !
google avatar

Louiscea D.

Yelp
Best sandwich shop in Fairfield, California hands down!! whenever I'm in town I stop by

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I "Absolutely Love" this place, the owner is very welcoming, hospitable, and kind. The food is fresh and delicious, You'll keep coming back! My favorite is the roast beef dip w cheddar cheese and, aujus sauce. Their potato salad is on hit! The staff are very kind and helpful as well. This restraint is rated a "10" to me. I love this business and recommend it to everyone. You won't be disappointed at all!

Yelp
What we Ordered: French Roast-beef Sandwich, Joe's Sandwich, BBQ Beef -Bread: 5/5 Sweet French Role - Soft and freshly baked; it seems like it's a home bake bread -Meat: 5/5 -Portion: 5/5 We stopped in for lunch and we were greeted warmly by people behind the counter, the sandwich makers:) I was told that he is also the owner:) I asked him what is the most popular and he immediately pointed at the French Roast-beef. They put a pretty hefty amount of meat on all the sandwiches and it is so tasty!! The dipping sauce is so flavorful! My husband ordered the pastrami. It is also delicious but not as good as the French Roast beef!!! The price is not so cheap but so worth it for the price you pay. It's a huge sandwich, but it's so worth it!! There's plenty of tables in the back and they even put a to-go foil before the exit. I think they somehow know that not too many people can finish the sandwich!

Shann E.

Yelp
We are always pleased with Joe's food, service & hospitality! This is old Fairfield at its finest!

Z D.

Yelp
The meats used for the sandwiches are clearly made fresh in house and piled high with toppings consisting of mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickle chips. I had the Joe's Special of roast beef and pastrami with french bread. I added provolone and throughly enjoyed the au jus that the sandwich came with. What a treat, not many places like this still around anymore.

Mahlon H.

Yelp
Best roast beef sandwich in town!! I drive 20 miles just for that. Great family and customer service!

Syrina F.

Yelp
Best Sandwich Place in Fairfield hands down. Service was nice. Very friendly while ordering our sandwiches. Meats are so fresh and flavorful. I had the BBQ Beef and my son had the Joes special. And the joes special was soooo good the dipping sauce made it 1000 times better. I highly recommend this place if You're a sandwich person
