The Best Burgers in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Joe’s Burgers’ two Oregon locations are west of Portland in Beaverton and Sherwood. All the typical burger joint variants are well executed here, such as a barbecue burger called the Cowboy Joe, a bleu cheese burger known as the Black & Blue, and even a chili cheeseburger. The menu here is well-rounded beyond the burger offerings: It has a handful of loaded hot dogs, milkshakes, and a spicy chicken sandwich that shouldn’t be skipped." - Rebecca Roland

Mind-Blowing Burgers in Portland and Beyond

"Joe's Burgers’ two Oregon locations are west of Portland in Beaverton and Sherwood. Joe's Burgers are definitely in the classic In-N-Out style, where singles start around the $7 mark, and go up with the addition of toppings. All the typical burger joint variants are well executed here, such a barbecue burger called the Cowboy Joe, a blue cheese burger known as the Black & Blue, and even a chili cheese burger. The menu here is well rounded beyond the burger offerings: It has a handful of loaded hot dogs, milkshakes, and a spicy chicken sandwich that honestly shouldn't be skipped." - Ron Scott, Janey Wong

Google
Delicious! Perfect for date night, date lunch, or popping out with friends. Self serve soda machine and the amount of fries that came with the burger was top tier. Will definitely come back!

Google
Tasty smash burgers. Loved the burger sauce. The hotdog was tasty as well. Longer than the bun and I only got mustard, no chili. Yummy fries. The thin crunchy type. Highly recommend.

Google
I cannot leave Portland without my annual stop at Joe's Burgers! We ate the onion rings before we could snap a pic but trust me they are a nice addition to the most delicious burgers! I got the Swiss Mushroom burger, BF got the Patty Melt and BF's sis got the Cowboy Joe! If it was after 5pm I'd pair it with a beer (yes that's an option!!)! The service was quick and they brought our order to our table. Can't wait to come back to try more! PS I love how there's a fireplace outside, it takes the ambiance to a level 10!

Yesterday I came in and had a great experience with the female worker who was taking orders at the front. She had a very upbeat personality and the person who ordered before me was giving her problems. She handled the situation very well and when it was my time to order she continued to maintain a respectful work manner even after being treated awfully by the customer before me. She also made one of the best milkshakes i’ve had in awhile. Overall it was a great experience at Joes Burgers and I will be going back soon.

Google
This is the double mushroom Swiss. It was $10.50 by itself. The patties are 0.2lbs each, which surprised me because I expected bigger. It was decent but the service was pretty good.

Google
Good lunch spot for a cheat day. They go heavy on the fries and with my chicken tendies. It's not super gourmet, but it delivers on value. Staff are friendly. Outdoor seating can be a huge plus.

Mikala F.

Google
Everyone was so nice there, and the food was exceptional. Very fresh and fries were crispy. The place was very clean too. We've already gone back a few times.

Janell W.

Google
Terrible staff, food cold and the burgers were awful. I had to ask the staff to heat up the food as the chili cheese fries were cold the cheese could not even melt as it was not hot. I got a mushroom burger with three tiny mushrooms and a ton of lettuce. I spent almost 30.00 for terrible cold food and the serves were awful. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Really good burgers. Staff is really professional and polite It's a pleasure to come around here
google avatar

Darren O.

Yelp
The bbq burger was really good. It did need extra sauce. I added ketchup and their signature sauce. That made it . The onion rings were solid- good rings! The mixed berry shake was amazing. Tasted like a piece of berry pie blended with ice cream. So good!
google avatar

Saadat I.

Yelp
They got my wife's order wrong but the burgers were solid. I think there might be an issue with the POS and DoorDash? Won't dock em for this.
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
On a whim we tried these burgers. Just average. Super thin patties and very dry. The best thing there was the onion rings...super crispy. Tried the black and blue burger but just pretty basic.

Yelp
As a former meat-eater, finding a satisfying veggie burger can be tough. But they surprised me with their Cowboy Joe burger! It was close to one of my past favorites during my meat eating days at Carl's Jr. It allows you to swap any regular patty for a veggie patty, offering a delicious alternative. While I had to skip the bacon (no "facon" option yet!), the rest of the burger brought back memories of my favorite Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr. My husband's seasonal chocolate raspberry milkshake was so good I had to fight the urge not to steal some! Now, the reason for the 4-star rating instead of 5: My mom's sweet potato fries in her chili basket were overcooked (ours were perfect, thankfully). While the service was friendly, we waited nearly 30 minutes for our food. My mom even ordered before us, and it seemed like a rush of online orders came in between, leading to a long wait for our food. Despite these minor hiccups, everything else was great, and these small missteps wouldn't stop us from returning. Overall, a positive experience with a delicious veggie burger option!

Yelp
My son and I stopped by Joes Burger. I was happy to find that they sell hotdog's. I ordered a chili cheese dog with fries. The hotdog and chili had good flavor, that chili was hearty. I would have loved the chili to have been a bit hotter temperature wise but I would order it again. The staff at the Teal location are always very friendly. The location is clean and sanitary.
google avatar

Naivit V.

Yelp
I ordered Joes to take to white oak tap house. The service was awesome and quick! The burger and onion rings were delicious

Peter L.

Yelp
Didn't have high expectations when I go there. It is pretty good overall. Onion rings were very crispy.

Yelp
I have lived in Oregon about 1.5 years and haven't truly found a good burger worthy of writing home about...until now. Joe's is situated in a eye-pleasing shopping center surrounded by beautifully mature trees. My daughter opted for the fish sandwich with chili cheese fries. The breaded fish filet was crunchy and big enough to where she wasn't biting just bread. The chili was so flavorful I went back for multiple bites. My hubz and I ordered the classic double cheeseburger with a side of fries and onion rings. The onion rings were crunchy yet without fear of breaking a tooth. The stars of our lunch were the burgers. WOW. Had the taste of smashed burgers without the smash with a hint of hamburgers you grill at home. Price was super reasonable. We sat outside sandwiched between Joe's other business, Choza. Can't wait to go back and try their specialty burgers.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
The burgers were awful-every. I've had a hard piece of gristle. Will never go back. Service was fine.

Ricci S.

Yelp
I love Joe's Burgers. One of the rare "fast food" places that I can have a burger with yummy gluten free buns and a dedicated fryer.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I visited for the first time today and decided on the classic cheeseburger, tots and a strawberry milkshake
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
With so many good burger places around, no need to go here and watch the staff texting and talking instead of, you know, greeting you. Yeah, two of them made eye contact with me and then went back to their conversation. The line cook finally got someone to talk to me. Fries were good, burger mediocre at best - no char (which has to be really hard to do on a smashed burger). Texture was like it'd been in a steam table. Chicken bites are smaller than mcnuggets but do come with about 17 pounds of fries. I'd been looking forward to eating here. Well, I've done it now, so you don't have to.
google avatar

Vick G.

Yelp
Pure perfection. Like I truly thought this was such a phenomenal burger. The blue cheese ratio was 10/10 and the addition of the onion ring made it next level. 1000% going back. We've tried mikes drive in, killer burger, burgerville, and I'm sorry I have to say this reigns supreme. Only downside was the order taker was curt and seemed real miserable, but we all have bad days so I won't be harsh.

Android O.

Yelp
When trying a new burger joint, I always order the basic cheeseburger. I made mine a double. My theory is that anyone can cover up their flaws with all sorts of different toppings, but a basic burger... you're not afforded that luxury. So if you can't, execute the most basic burger, then you're not a great burger joint. When I got my burger, the patties were bit overcooked. And as some commenters pointed out, they were a bit on the small side. And the buns also seemed a bit dense. I was expecting a lighter more fluffy consistency. If you like dense buns, you may appreciate this place a bit more than I did. As for the taste.... Well, it wasn't bad and it wasn't good. It was just average. For what you pay, I'd expected more out of the burger. While the burger wasn't the greatest, I did like the onion rings that I ordered. They were tasty and perfectly cooked. And best of all, they were not greasy. But the portion was small given the $5.00 price tag. While the food may have been average, the staff was very warm and friendly. Despite the great staff, Over all, I wasn't blown away by this place. I might return to try some of their other offerings like their fish and chips. However, if I'm in the mood for a burger, I may have to skip this place.

Kov E.

Yelp
Really good burgers and quality ingredients Our kids love it and the staff are always super helpful and very friendly We love burger joes - my kids
google avatar

Yelp
Note to self: do not get the breaded fish basket ever again. Tasted like they were fried in the oldest of oil.
google avatar

R S.

Yelp
First time going to Joe's and it was great! Burger was delicious, LOVED the onion rings, and the staff was very friendly. Also, loved that the burgers were simple and fresh and the menu was just right - not too many options, but a good variety including a chicken sandwich and even a fish sandwich. Will be back!

Yelp
Joe's Burgers was suggested by Yelp while I was searching for "Burgers" in the area around South Beaverton. They are located in the Murrayhill Marketplace shopping center...with lots of parking around there. I'm not a fan of "novelty" burgers that have lots of oddball non traditional ingredients piled on them, so I was glad to see a "Joe's Classic Cheese Burger" on the menu and that's what I ordered. Well, the burger was OK, but it was UNremarkable. What I mean is that nothing about the burger really stood out in any way. I expected a slightly 'higher end' burger, but there was nothing notable. The burger was not thick and juicy, it didn't have a rich beefy flavor, the lettuce was not crispy, the slice of tomato was not nice and plump, and I didn't notice any grilled onions that were supposed to be in there (according to the menu). However, the workers there were really nice, and there's an adjoining covered outdoor seating area along with inside seating. But, as for the burger itself, I'd give it a grade of "C" for average.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Staff was really nice and helpful but this was not a satisfying burger. Meat tasted low quality despite being 'grass fed'. Leaves a lot to be desired for. On par with any random fast food burger chain.

Dolly C.

Yelp
Best cheeseburger that I've had in recent history. Delicious beef, great sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and pickle. The sweet potato fries were delicious too. I'd order from here again.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
id give 5 stars if they didn't get rid of their veggie burger. it was so good it came with a lemon dill aioli and a whole wheat bun and a good bean pattie. I frequently got it from here and then one day i tried to get it and it was gone. haven't wanted to go back since which just sucks cause their sides are also good.
google avatar

Camille B.

Yelp
My cheese burger combo with strawberry milkshake was so delicious!!! I will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and great service! Love the classic cheeseburger, fries, & chocolate shake!! Rating: 9.5/10
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
Scrumptious! This is the burger mom made, with better fries. Service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is fine for a quick meal.
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
We ordered for pickup via postmates. I got the text the order was ready and went to pick it up- the girls behind the counter said it was not ready. I showed them the confirmation from the app and they told me the postmates app is wrong. I asked why it was taking longer and she said "we're having a fundraiser tonight." Looked around and there were only two families in there. Finally, 20 minutes later they told me my order was ready- it was someone else's order. I pointed this out to them and they said "oh here is your order-" one that had been siting there ready the whole time. Absolutely no apology and our food was cold. Get it together.

Candice T.

Yelp
The absolute WORST!! We ordered dinner tonight, the completely wrong order was delivered, no knock on the door so by the time we realized the driver was gone. Called the restaurant to tell them and they said they would remake the order but then never delivered it. Will only order from 5 Guys from now on when craving a burger.

Yelp
Ever sense Malone's closed down the Murray Hill center has been missing a good place to eat and drink. Joe's is right next to Hapa Asian Fusion. Which is a great place to eat and wonderfully nice. Joe's just goes one step beyond Hapa in that they offer a limited selection of beer, wine and spirits. They also have a large garage glass door the will be open in good weather. The restaurant is brand new, clean, nicely staffed with happy people. I had a double chili burger, chili fry's and an IPA. The craft beer is 6 bucks while domestic is 5. The chili fry's are good but still lackluster on both the fry and chili. The burger is small even for a double. Other craft burger places a double would fill me up. The place is nice, food is ok, drinks are available. I think they will capture a variety of customers from families to neighbors coming out for a beer. And the occasional cyclingyelper. (Yes, that's a word!)
google avatar

angie c.

Yelp
I'm all about their chili cheese fries. That alone will bring me in EVERY TIME. Also 38 weeks prego so there's that too.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend and I were having some catch up time and wanted some food. She said, "Hamburger"? Ohhhh....ahhhh... suddenly I remembered that Joe's was now open in my hood!! Oh but wait...fear factor...are they as good as a I remember? Fingers crossed - and she has never eaten at any of their locations so here is to hoping they ARE as good as I remember and the one now right by me does me proud. Boy were they fast - I mean, food joints are a lot less traveled these days but STILL... they were super fast and made everything. I ordered a Swiss mushroom burger with sweet potato fries and a chocolate shake for my freezer. DEEEEEEELICIOUS! My friend was blown away and both of us practically licked the boxes. Also, I do love their packaging because I can compost or recycle all of it which is nice! And that shake the next day with a spoon was heaven! So yay yet OMFG - knowing how close the deliciousness of those burgers is = VERY dangerous. Though I try to do Pilates daily so that I can eat Carbs.
google avatar

Gabi K.

Yelp
Overall: Good burgers, good prices. Fried not included with burger, have to purchase those separate. Atmosphere: Normal burger joint vibe. No tables inside because of COVID. Food: Tried the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Guac bacon burger, and the strawberry milkshake. The Mushroom Swiss wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't as good as some of the other mushroom Swiss I've tried. The guac bacon burger was one that I had never tried before and I have to say that I enjoyed it. The guac had a nice spice to it, but it wasn't overpowering or very spicy. Just the right amount and there was crispy bacon in there that added extra flavor and crunch which made it better. The fries were good. Not the best but not the worst for sure. The strawberry milkshake was slacking. It tasted artificial. You could tell there it was cheap syrup they use. Service: It was a young bunch when I went and they were all very friendly!
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
Been here many times and its gone downhill each and every single time I go back. Burgers are good, dont get me wrong. And they pile on the fries. So why the low rating now? Well, they often screw up the order and this time it was infuriatingly hilarious. Ordered online at 557pm, said pickup was 624pm. Then it moved to 616pm. I got there at 605 because sometimes they are actually quick. At 635 my order was ready and it was the wrong order! The box had felt light and I peeked in to see the wrong food. Ran back inside and told them and they said they could remake my order but it'd take another 30+ min. They could/would not expedite. I mean, SERIOUSLY? So they supposedly refunded me. Thanks for an absolute colossal waste of time and not helping out the customer. Will be posting this review all over because you just lost a family that enjoyed your food but not your service.
google avatar

Natasha K.

Yelp
These burgers taste delicious! This was our first meal as Beaverton residents and what a way to set the tone! The burgers are juicy and extremely flavorful. Love the addition of the grilled onions. French fries is a generous portion and tasty as well. My only issue is that it definitely is on the pricier side for a burger but still worth it in my opinion.

J H.

Yelp
Food quality has gone down and they are stingy with sides, and they charge for extra fry sauce which is ridiculous and greedy when they already raised prices and charge so much for their burgers and smaller sides - not worth it anymore.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Great burgers. Good vibes. I'm a huge fan of chili cheese fries and these are spectacular. Well done- great burgers. Also $6 beers!!! Can't get better than this.
google avatar

Darren G.

Yelp
I went into Joe's burgers with pretty low expectations! I mean another fast food burger joint right? One amongst many! How good could this place be? Was it just average Joe's from "dodgeball" masquerading as a quant little burger joint nestled away in the Murrayhill plaza? Honestly this won't take home the award for the best burgers in Portland but it's a pretty tasty burger for the price! I would say this is a good cross between In N Out and Burgerville! I opted for the guacamole burger and it had that fresh off the grill flavor, fresh soft bun with perfectly crispy bacon and fresh guac. The sweet potato fries were a perfect addition and compliments the burgers really well! Nicely done Joe (whoever you are)! You make a burger that's good on the fly! It hit the spot!

Dave M.

Yelp
I ate here Friday night and the food was substandard at best. The food preparation has gone down consistently since I first ate there many months ago. I was eating there about once a week but the product is sloppy and no attention to details. Order #72 on 5/21 at 4:07pm. Nobody there but employees and I. I asked for crispy fries Friday, still undercooked and gross. The burger itself was undercooked as well. Red center, which lead to a severely soaked and soggy bun (think tortilla-flat), wet slimy mess that all fell apart. I was afraid to eat it. When you opened your fries were perfect and unique, crispy. The last 5-6 times, they are undercooked, slimy worms. Somebody needs to TRAIN these cooks. It's not only inedible, but it's unsafe. I haven't seen a manager-type in there in months. Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Shane D.

Yelp
Order is always correct, even with substitutions. Nice juicy burger which you need napkins. "It's a good thing". The staff is always polite.
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Burgers were tasty, moist and well-prepared. Wife had the Cowboy Joe and I had Classic double with cheese. We got sides of fries and rings. The good- the rings were very good, crispy and large. The ho-hum - the fries were the frozen, nothing special variety. Joe's could step up their game on the fries like 5 guys or McMenamins. The two of us dined for $25. A bit pricey IMHO. I would come here again, skip the fries, order the rings and bring a coupon. There is a 5 Guys next plaza over, for the price, in my opinion, better burgers and fries. Is theroom for both so close to each other? I guess we'll see. Post review. I find myself coming to Joe's more than I thought I would as they have a delightful outdoor space to sit at and it's a great way to spend a Summer evening.

Ann S.

Yelp
I stopped at the Murrayhill location on a whim today and ordered a cheeseburger and fries to go. Delicious! Really good cheeseburger, although I'll ask for less sauce next time, and some of the best fries I've had in ages. Nice find.
google avatar

Todd O.

Yelp
Understandable that COVID has brought inconsistent service among many restaurants. We've been to Joe's now four times in a couple months. Only once was it OK. The rest has been very good. The staff sure does try hard. They truly want to get the orders right and question you if you order gluten free items. They really want to make sure they don't create an allergy issue. I just wish they would have a pick up line and an order line more organized. I end up waiting behind people that haven't ordered yet with two cash registers staffed and my stuff is sitting there ready to go. That's my only complaint.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Really good food and fast service. The fries were perfect and my husband got the bbq onion ring burger and said it was really good and he'd get again
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
We normally love this place and order every once in a while online. Today we ordered from the app and got a few things wrong, but there was nowhere on the order history to write a review. We ordered 2 of the spicy chicken sandwiches and both were missing jalapeños and 1 was missing bacon, wtf??! It's even more disappointing when you're dying of starvation and your little ones have drained you of all your energy. The one thing we looked forward to was this easy delicious meal, but parts were missing :'(
google avatar

Erin O.

Yelp
The food here is good and it's super close to our house, so an easy choice at the end of the week when I don't feel like cooking. Tried and true in our household: The onion rings, the corn dogs, and the burgers. The chili cheese fries are kinda gross. I would avoid those. The boozy milkshakes always sound tempting, but I have yet to try one.
google avatar

Roxanne O.

Yelp
Not sure if the location can control the app, but we tried to place an order on Tuesday July 26, 2022 at 6:45 pm. It was a large order with 16 items and a cost of just under $100. When I submitted the order it wouldn't go through and said the business was closed. I know it was still open, the closing time wasn't for another 45 minutes at 7:30pm. We had to physically go to Joe's and order in person. The staff was visibly upset when we placed the order because now the time was after 7:00pm. This is the second time we've had a problem with this app. The last time, the staff cancelled our order (much smaller) because they were too busy, but didn't bother to tell us until we got there to pick it up. We like the food and will go back, they have great corn dogs, but use the app at your own risk. Five stars for food, one star for the app.
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
My husband, 7yo, and I all get different things and we all love Joe's! The burgers are mouthwateringly delicious no matter which one you order. It's nice to have the side choice options of fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, tots, and Cajun tots. Now that I think about it none of us love the rings, but everything else is so good I wouldn't deduct a star for that. I was worried I would tire of burgers so I've ordered the spicy chicken sandwich a few time and it's unbelievable. Just the right amount of spice. So good! Last but not least - the shakes are no joke. Thick and creamy with delicious flavor options.

Michael G.

Yelp
The burgers were so flat that McDonald's had thicker Pattie's then it I could tell the Pattie's were literally frozen tasting and the aftertaste tasted like chemicals or something so overpriced for what you get 11$ for a double pattie I tasted the pattie by itself and it tasted like grass I also got a chicken burger that was spicy and why the was there guacamole and green peppers on there.... The pictures look nothing like the food at all the bread was flat and dry the fries were cold and I heard a person behind me saying they're hotdog is cold and from what I heard. I wish I could give you negative one hundred stars
google avatar

Arun S.

Yelp
Excellent burgers. Probably one of the best burger places in Beaverton area I would say. Chicken Bites and fries are also spot on. Try it if you are in the area.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Best little independent burger place in the Murryhill area. The bacon avocado burger and chili burgers are great. Also love the boosy shakes if you are eating in. The fries are also exceptional. Way better than the five guys down the street (literally the worst five guys ever) imho.
