"Since 1974, Joe’s Donuts has been serving raised glazeds, old fashioneds, and fritters in Sandy, steps away from Meinig Memorial Park. Locals and tourists consider Joe’s a must-visit stop along Highway 26 on the way up to the mountain. Varieties range from longstanding favorites like chocolate cake doughnuts, blueberry fritters, and apple turnovers, as well as more newfangled options like pumpkin rum cake doughnuts or peanut butter and jelly-filled raiseds." - Levi Rogers

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by a local. I had the best Apple fritter I've ever had. It was so fresh. The place is legit and the workers are artists.

Sarah C.

Yelp
They're good donuts! And cheap too. I think what I appreciate most about Joe's is the "small town" store feel: it's got a unique look, they've been around for decades, employees are friendly without being over the top, they're fair about prices, they decorate for every holiday, etc. Pull off the road as you pass through Sandy, you probably won't regret one of these sweet treats to fuel you up before or after your Mt Hood activities.

Ciarra L.

Yelp
First time here! Ambiance- it's definitely an older store front. There's I believe a couple tables and some chairs. Atmosphere- it's a little hole in the wall, the staff are friendly and they seem to work pretty hard to put our fast and friendly service to customers. They're also just super sweet! The gal that helped us was nice! Price- it's pretty decent. They have an assortment of donuts to pick from, soda to drink, milk with other flavored milk. I tried their maple bar- it was so good! It had a great ratio of sweet and savory. The gal had just put fresh maple frosting on it so I literally ate the whole donut while getting into the car- it was that good. Probably the best one I've had ever! I'd pick them over Voodoo 100% Thanks again!

Yelp
The locals and frequent travelers to Mt. Hood love this doughnut shop. There is always a line out the door. Lots of campers buy the doughnuts by the dozens, choosing several varieties. Prices are far better than those fancy doughnut shops in Portland. These are your basic doughnuts - cake and yeast - both are delicious. I got the Boston Cream, but I think they call it something different. It's a yeast doughnut with vanilla cream inside and the top is dipped in dark chocolate. It is very sweet so definitely get a cup of coffee to cut the richness. I prefer the basic cake doughnut. Either the plain, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. They are small, half the size of the others, but they are dense and filling. Look for the red and white checkerboard building as you drive through Sandy heading up to Mt. Hood.

Yelp
Can't miss the red and white exterior! Great Doughnuts! Lots of choices. Mmm the fritters Service was quick, interior is serviceable but that's it.

Yelp
If you like donuts stop by Joes Donut Shop the next time you drive through Sandy. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Wow this place is 5 stars all the way around. The service was amazing, very kind and did not mind answering tons of questions about the various donuts. Easy to find location right off the main road. The donuts were so fresh and some of the best I've had ever, melt in your mouth good. I had a raspberry filled one and some of the maple bar, both absolutely delicious. They have great prices and lots of options. Now if I can just sale a few more roofs in the Sandy area to have another excuse to come buy more donuts. Cute little donuts shop that I very much look forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Overall, I would give Joe's 5-stars, because they make some quality donuts, with a decent variety of options. We tried about 5 different donuts when we went in, and found the cherry fritters and their cake donuts to be exceptional. I'm normally an apple fritter guy, but their cherry version was way better than their apple (I've had better apple fritters in the Portland area). The other donut varieties we had were all good, but those were the most memorable. It seemed strange that all their indoor tables were closed off when we were there around 11:00 AM, but I suppose they could have had staffing issues or something. We were getting ours to go anyway, so it really didn't matter.

Yelp
We were excited to check out this donut shop and stopped by on a Sunday noticing a line out the door. We definitely expected a great experience. We were wrong. First we noticed the back door completely open and flies, bees and other flying bugs everywhere, inside the display case, all over the rack of donuts behind the display case as well. At first I was going to leave, but decided to be adventurous. The gentleman in front of us was a priest and very sweet. When he went to the counter to order, the cashier was rude and short with him. He was so pleasant, I could not believe how he was treated. He ordered and she basically threw the donuts in a bag. Our turn, we were super sweet trying to get a smile out of the girl. Nope, rude, short with us and threw our 2 donuts in a bag. Oh, flying bugs everywhere. We took bites of the bottom of the donuts and it was good. Then threw the rest of the bug infested pieces away. I really don't know why the health department hasn't shut them down. Flying bugs everywhere and it wasn't really clean overall. Keep driving when you see this sign, you won't miss anything.

Yelp
Classic spot, open super early and no frills local place :) Love it and the cake donut, awesomeness. Also prices are still normal, with all this inflation going on it's nice to get a donut for $1 Gotta check this place out on the way to snow bunny or up to timberline, you can't miss it!

Melanie T.

Yelp
Usually their donuts are so good but I bought 1 today and after the 1st bite I realized it wasn't cooked fully. The dough was stretchy. Grossed me out. I went inside and got a replacement. (Asking the cashier to make sure I got something that was completely cooked.) As soon as I tore it open and looked inside I realized this donut wasn't cooked completely either. Ugh!

Samantha M.

Yelp
You will drive by this place if you aren't looking for it, so make sure to bookmark this as a stop on your way to Mount Hood. I had the blueberry donut today and it was fabulous, I had a glazed for dessert, and it was just as good. They were soft and fresh the way donut should be. the employee at the counter was super friendly and really helpful. I likely won't be back in this area but if you are, you absolutely need to stop here!

Ray V.

Yelp
I was never a big fan of Joe's over the years. But recently I decided to give them a try again. The 4 stars are literally because of their raised donuts. I don't know what if anything is different, but their raised donuts are huge and fluffy and very light. Be prepared for a sugar and carb bomb to hit you though. Their maple is solidly above the middle of the pack. Good flavor and not still runny after it's applied. I can't give 5 stars as their cake donuts are definitely not to my standard. In my past and recent visits the cake donuts are meh in my opinion. But stay with the raised and you'll be happy.

Piper F.

Yelp
This place is still the best donuts around fresh daily, staff is friendly. The maple bars are big and has a crisp to the bread. The setting is small and when there is a line usually there is I wouldn't want to sit there having someone standing behind u. There is lots of parking or u can park behind city hall in front of the entrance to Meinig park. Very lucky to have this donut shop in my part of town.

Bob C.

Yelp
The icing is what keeps us coming back. It's like cake frosting on donuts. No complaints! When they're fresh they're delicious. It used to be the donuts and the service though. Now the mood is much less friendly. The vibe is almost stoic. Not nearly as many smiles, or lighthearted feels. Not sure if they were bought by new people or what, but it wouldn't hurt to ease up a bit on the seriousness, and remember that selling donuts to happy weekenders and down to earth locals is supposed to be fun! :)

Bob M.

Yelp
This will have to be part of a collection of vecual emporium that includes Voodoo Donuts as a place that should be examples of the baking prowess, but both --and Joe's is the local joint to us--put out donuts to rival, um, I don't know, perhaps a mediocre Winchell's. I'm not being snarky. They put out a product that seemingly follows a formula. Follow the recipe, squeeze this stuff on top or inside and so on. I speak with the knowledge of my sister grinding out donuts at Winchell's before school. Joe's donuts are a lovely thing fresh but aren't they all? Krispy Kreme figured out that if you make fresh product as the day rolls along, people will beeline to such a place. I feel cruddy for giving a semi-bad review for a local institution. I want a local place to thrive, but it is their decision whether to impress locals with something unique and delightful. I know wholesale prices, especially ingredients for baked goods. But I know of bakeries that are still thriving, making margins for a healthy business. The most successful bakeries made it clear to their locals why he was raising his prices. The bakery is in Boston, who loves its local businesses like we do. Pardon the awful pun, but Joe's needs to ah, er, rise to the challenge.

Jessica H.

Yelp
Doughnuts were really really good but don't get the breakfast burrito as it's so bland, like the potatoes didn't even have potato flavor etc it was bad. I would have gave a 4 star but the lady that took our order was not only rude but hated her job. She didn't even hand us our food. I asked hey is that burrito mine as she originally forgot to give it to me and she said yes and then walked away. I had to grab it not that it was that big of a deal but it was closer to the inside of the counter. She just didn't like interaction with people, rude and overall acted like she was a miserable person. She was probably 17/18 had a pink/white crochet hat on today and wore glasses. Honey if you don't like people don't work in customer service.!

Yelp
My 100 year-old grandmother who no longer filters much of what she says and only does thing she likes, loves these Apple fritters. They are a ways from her home, but it is definitely worth going out of our way to see the smile on her face when we bring one to her home. Bonus - We really like them as well.

Lauren W.

Yelp
Always the best doughnuts & for a good price. We walk here pretty regularly on weekends & love their doughnuts. My stomach has always been sensitive to most doughnuts from other places but for some reason I can eat any of the doughnuts here without worrying about it. Definitely recommend!

Jessica P.

Yelp
Gotta give it a one star since they were closed even though their sign said open 4 or 5am-5pm every day of the week.

Summer O.

Yelp
Joe's is a staple of our trips to Government Camp for ski camp in the summer. AND our family is donut snobs. What makes Joe's so good? I'm actually not too sure. They're a small shop in a small town and will have a line at any time they're open. Donuts are made fresh daily, but we have had leftovers from ordering a dozen for our family of 4, that we enjoyed for a couple days. Are they our favorite donut? No. But they get high praise from us! The other great thing, is the price! We live in Seattle and I know the cost of living is high in our area. Here at Joe's I'm able to get a variety dozen for only $11. You can just get one donut too. Joe's has a small eat-in area and no outdoor seating except the park behind the shop.

Fred Y.

Yelp
It's been there for ever. Great donuts and opens early . Service is outstanding. Right in Sandy

Kim R.

Yelp
We were finally able to stop by and grab some donuts on our way up. Stopped on Sunday night, around 3:30...as expected, there wasn't a huge selection left from which to pick. But, we were able to find 6 to try. -2 blueberry -2 old fashioned - 2 cinnamon sugar cake All of the donuts were good, but the icing on the blueberry and old fashioned is a tad sweet for my taste. Since the cinnamon sugar didn't have the icing it was my favorite. I'd give Joes 3 stars...good donuts...just maybe a tad sweet for some. If the crumb had been a tad less dense and the icing a smidge less sweet they'd be a 4 star for sure. I'd definitely be willing to stop by and try some more next time I'm heading up the mountain.

Keizzel C.

Yelp
Your good old donut shop on the wait to the mountain! Driving up we saw a large queue outside so that was a sign we had to stop on our way down if they were still open. Fortunately they're open 4AM-5PM (wait whaaat!?) Couple parking lot spots near the shop and even in the afternoon there was still a queue. Always a good sign when there are lines outside of places that don't take crazy long. There were ~4 groups in front of us but we got in the door and out the door within 10 mins. During Covid they have plexiglass to separate the staff and case from those ordering. They had two cashiers as well which helped the line go quickly. We ended up getting the flavors below: + Powdered cake donut + Marionberry jelly filled donut + Old Fashioned + Maple Bar + Blueberry fritter My favorite flavors have to be the powdered cake donut and blueberry fritter for their textures. The maple bar is a solid option as well and was airy. You can't go wrong with an old fashioned as well. All donuts came out to less than $6. Definitely much more affordable than some of the other donut shops in Portland, but flavors are more on the classic side. Got them later in the afternoon so would be keen to get them fresh out of the fryer to get the warm glaze and crispiness of the dough.

Makaelyn J.

Yelp
Great service, fast workers and the best donuts! I've been going here since I was 4. Their donuts are always fresh and perfect. They really are the best donuts in the world! I would come every Friday with my dad before school, they made me a special half maple half chocolate because I could never chose.

Jenn N.

Yelp
Pandemic measures they are enforcing: They put up plexiglass barriers on the counter where you order. 1 -2 customers can order at a time, with 1 additional customer being allowed in line inside, at a distance. The outside line was self respecting about a 6ft distance between groups and most were wearing masks correctly. Masks are mandatory inside. The plexiglass can make communication a little tough but we managed through it. It was a little odd when we went to use touch pay - the system only charged us a partial amount of the bill to the card, so we had to give them cash for the rest. The regular coffee was solid and you can choose from regular or french vanilla creamer. The white sugar is in a glass dispenser. My cousin really enjoyed her blackberry mocha. The apple fritters are ridiculously amazing. With good size pieces of real apple, a sweet glaze on the outside, and tender dough in the middle. The maple bar was also very good.

Bob J.

Yelp
Best donuts anywhere. They say in need 64 more characters ok. Best donuts ever, ever, ever and ever.

EG E.

Yelp
I have eaten here many times over the years. Recently, I visited Joes and was charged twice for the same purchase by the cashier. After calling them 3/4 times explaining the double charge and asking for one of the charges to be refunded, nothing has been done.

Andi B.

Yelp
Delicious homemade donuts were just what the doctor ordered when we were heading up to ski one Friday morning. Amazing apple fritters and the service was outstanding. It's delightful to support a local business that puts out a quality product.

Todd F.

Yelp
Great donuts but it's always busy because it's on the list of tourist destinations. Their maple is to live for!!!!!

Rob Cruser C.

Yelp
I've lived in Gresham pretty much my whole life so I've been coming here for decades, and I must say in the last 6 months things have been slipping and hopefully this will help get their attention. The last four or five times I've been here, I've had undercooked, under raised donuts and otherwise indifferently made donuts. The apple fritters used to be very substantial and filled with apple chunks, now they're just kind of big sugar globs. Please don't just trade on your reputation, you need to up your game. Some friends brought some of your donuts to a gathering I was at this morning, the chocolate bar wasn't cooked and it was dense inside. The raised donuts were all flat. Blueberry fritter was small, dense and undercooked.

Carla P.

Yelp
Awesome place !!! Great donuts and super friendly people:)) Definitely go back ... very dog friendly too !

Bernadette M.

Yelp
Donuts are very good! Surprised I've never heard of this donut place before. Donuts are soft, flavorful, and yummy!

Charlie M.

Yelp
Hand-made, delicious variety, long line moves quickly to provide the best donuts I've had in more than 50 years. When I was a little kid, I got picked up at 7:15 am by a yellow school bus and driven 45 minutes to middle school. At our bus stop was a little coffee shop that made donuts at 6-6:30 every morning, so we got to enjoy one hot with melted icing as we waited for the bus to arrive. It was really amazing - and gone now. But Joe's was recommended for good coffee in town. We got there and found so much more. The hot breakfast croissant sandwich was really tasty; but the donuts we got as a trial run were maple bar, Pershing (maple covered), cherry fritter and apple fritter. The flavors and textures were amazing. Full, creamy, rich, fluffy, but substantial too. We had expected the maple bars to be our favorites - and we were eating it in honor of my 92 year old father-in-law who is a die-hard fan of maple bars. But to our surprise, the apple fritter was like warm apple pie with large fresh chunks of apple blended with cinnamon and full-flavored, fluffy dough cooked just perfectly. OMG - a life changing experience. Check it out.

Amie J.

Yelp
Joe's donuts have always been a staple, signature piece of Sandy. I love the flavor varieties they rotate in and out. Service is always quick and pleasant.

Wendi W.

Yelp
No frills little shop. Good donuts especially the maple bismarks. Bomb cronuts. That's it. Get some!

Richie J.

Yelp
Great doughnuts. Cool vintage local spot. I'll return the next time I'm in the area. It's on the way to Mt Hood.

Tsyria T.

Yelp
Awesome little donut shop on the way to Mt. Hood. Stop by, grab a donut, take it to the slopes. Take it for a hike. I love custard so I went for the custard filled donut. They had a banana frosting one that was new to me though and that was awesome! It has all your typical donut flavors, no bougie Blue Star types here. They do classics, and they do them well!

Erica D.

Yelp
So. Good. Had a cronut for the first time. It was delish. Wish we would've gone here sooner to try a few different ones. Service was very quick and friendly. 10/10 would return.

Mariko K.

Yelp
Pretty good! I tried a glazed old-fashioned. It was oily, but the oil didn't have weird aftertaste. It was also very reasonably priced at 99 cents and wasn't too big.

Jordan P.

Yelp
Incredible. This is the spot for the Portland/Vancouver area, stop trying to find a place and put the time on to get over here. They are exactly what a donut should be. Light, fluffy and chewy. They disappear when you bite into them and dissolve beautifully. The glaze is perfect. This is not some bready, cakey, dry "donut", this is the real deal and worth going to anytime.

Shannon T.

Yelp
These donuts were tasty but the line on a Sunday morning in January was a bit long. The donuts were warm and when my maple bar was put in the bag it was a maple disaster. The warm maple topping was now all over the inside of the bag and no longer on my donut. I enjoyed the chocolate bar and the blueberry fritter, both were fresh but not warm. I would recommend Joe's donut shop and worth the wait as far as yummy donuts go. The donuts were a perfect balance not to doughy or cakey. While it might be the only donut place in town, it has earned the stars! I will stop by again and to retry the maple bar and other types on my next visit and update my review if needed. In the meantime, if you are on your way to the mountain or on your way home, stop in and get some yummy goodness.

Steven H.

Yelp
My absolute favorite donuts in Oregon. I love the freshness of them and of course the taste. The employees inside the store are port great. They deal with a ton of customers everyday. It amazes me that they can keep their composure so well. I reduced one star due to parking and lines down the sidewalk. I wish the patching lot and store were bigger. Great place, a must try!

Collin A.

Yelp
Not open at posted hours. We travelled far to get here only to be disappointed by a closed store 2 hours early. Looked in and saw a display full of donuts still. Very disappointing. I've heard good things

Mike R.

Yelp
We've driven by so many times without stopping, but we finally checked this place out last time we passed it. I don't think will ever pass it again without stopping! The donuts are great and very well priced! They had three different types of fritters which was awesome! And I got a cronut which you don't find very often. They have multiple more donuts I can't wait to go back and try! Just go there for their donuts and don't get their coffee! It was typical gas station quality coffee!

Jenna M.

Yelp
This is the best gem in Sandy! Joes donuts has been around since the 70's and has been a staple to the locals, and even travelers on their way to, and over the mountain. A must stop for delicious donuts. The workers are friendly and great, and the donuts are really that good. Pretty great prices too, I'm shocked how cheap it is sometimes. I stop any time I'm passing by, even if I'm not craving, it's great to grab a dozen and give to family or coworkers, or just snack on later. The parking is tight and small, and it's always busy on the weekends. Located on a one way street on hwy 26 and 211, it can get a little congested sometimes. I can't imagine the amount of donuts that have to produce each day, and pretty much when they're out, they're out. I enjoy the chocolate with sprinkles the most, but the blueberry is great, maple bars, Cronuts, bear claws too. Really an assortment of everything- you can't go wrong. The building inside is super small, with a line that forms pretty easy, but goes bye really quick. Must stop on your way to a gnarley day at the mountain!

Kyle P.

Yelp
Let's face it: I'm a yuppie. I live in the city. I bike to work. I read the alt-weekly newspaper. I have a gym membership I don't use as much as I should. I have an opinion on coffee. It's all there. And like any good yuppie, I enjoy a good artisanal donut. In fact, I may or may not have gotten into arguments about who has the best donuts in the Portland area (Blue Star? Pips? Coco? Heaven forbid.. Voodoo?). Well, ladies and gentlemen, I have a new favorite: Joe's! Located in that red and white checkered shack that catches your eye as you pass through Sandy every time you drive up to Mt Hood, this place is legit. I'm as guilty as the next guy of never stopping in, always focusing on getting up to the mountain as fast as possible, but that will have to change. I stopped in here on a more leisurely trip to Hoody with my parents and we were all delighted by our donuts. In fact, we were so enthralled that I forgot to take pictures until the donuts were half-eaten (see photos for proof). This is definitely an old-school style donut shop, so don't get your hopes up for blueberry-bourbon-basil-bath salt flavors, but do enjoy classic flavored donuts that are reasonably priced and oh-so moist. Joe's: my new mountain tradition!

Alex V.

Yelp
A perfect spot to stop at before a long hike at Mt. Hood. The donuts are amazing. The blueberry fritter just melts in your mouth. They also sell day passes for the mountain!

Vee K.

Yelp
Cute little donut shop. The place opens at 4am according to the sign. There was two older ladies working. They came off a little unwelcoming and unwilling to help. It could be because They were in the middle stocking. we noticed a drink still in the crate. We asked if we can grab from that. The person said it's probably better to get from the fridge. We said we would but it's not in there. It sounded like it was too much work for her and we offer to help carry it. She said no she got it. A little disappointing for our first visit. On top of that the cashier almost overcharge me until I mention something. She said sorry. The donut was at least good. I gotten the maple donut bar

Karl H.

Yelp
Have been a customer of Joe's Donut Shop since 1974/75. Best donuts in the NW. The fancy new donut shops do not come close. Donuts made the old fashioned way. Fresh, warm and tasty. The variety of donuts and pastries offered are unbelievably tasty. If you and family are looking for a real donut, stop in at the red & white checkered building located at the east end of Sandy. You will not regret the visit and may very well initiate a family tradition.
