Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: April 8 | Eater LA

"Late last week I was on the hunt for late-night pizza and ended up at Joe’s in West Hollywood — despite its own controversy, it’s open later than Prince Street and that made it the clear choice. Ordering an entire cheese pizza to soak up the night’s remnants, I found the mozzarella and sauce melded beautifully while the crust kept everything together; there’s something distinct about a fresh whole New York pie around midnight. I loaded it with oregano, grated parmesan, chili flakes, and black pepper and it did exactly what I wanted it to." - Eater Staff

We had Joe’s in New York. They have a nice selection of pizza and other things. Small shop with a few tables. Decent price. The pizza was lovely.

Google
Joe’s Pizza is a must — the best New York–style pizza in LA. It’s easy, practical, and perfect for any occasion. They sell pizza by the slice or whole pies, making it great for a quick lunch, dinner, or takeout for parties. They also have some tables inside if you’d like to dine in.

Joes pizza has been the talk everywhere and my mum and I feel so privileged to have come here from Australia. The pizza is humongous. We’ve never seen pizza this big before.! One slice of pizza here is an equivalent to 4 slices back at home. We are very happy to have tried the pizza. Will definitely be back. Thank you so much. The atmosphere and the kindness of the staff was phenomenal. I was also very excited to be here because our Uber driver had told us that he had actually met Jason Momoa and Justin Bieber here so we were hoping that we would see them there too!

We stopped by Joe’s Pizza and had such a great experience. The pizza and cannoli were amazing, and Javier was incredibly kind and accommodating, truly went above and beyond. I even accidentally left a personal item behind, and he made sure to keep it safe for me until I came back. Couldn’t have asked for better service.

Joe’s Pizza on Sunset is just one of those places that never lets you down. If you’ve lived in LA long enough, you know there are about a thousand places claiming to be the “best slice in the city,” but Joe’s doesn’t shout—it just delivers. I came in once for a quick bite and ended up going back three times in the same week. That should tell you something. Their BBQ chicken pizza is low-key addictive. The crust is perfectly crisp but still has that nice chew to it, and the BBQ sauce hits just the right balance between tangy and sweet. Big chunks of juicy chicken, just the right amount of cheese, and a little green onion—chef’s kiss. But the sleeper hit for me is the Mom’s Pizza. It’s got a rustic feel to it, almost like something your friend’s Italian mom would pull out of the oven. Tomatoes, garlic, basil, and olive oil doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. It’s casual, it’s fast, it’s friendly. Not trying to be fancy, just good pizza done right. Whether you’re grabbing a slice late or taking a whole pie home, Joe’s has earned its spot in the LA pizza scene.

Google
My favorite NYC style pizza in Southern California.... Moved here about 2 year ago from NYC and had been on the hunt for a normal, everyday NYC Pizzeria slice. Don't get me wrong - this is not the best pizza I've ever had... It's just as close as I could possibly get to my local neighborhood pizza in NY. Their food is priced moderately. Far better than some of the other famous Pizza places in the area. Their delivery service has always been great for me. Never had an issue.

Google
If you love NY style pizza then this spot is one of the best I’ve ever had in Los Angeles. The flavor tastes exactly like NY pizza and the crust and underbelly of the pizza are cooked to perfection. The only downside is the pricing. It’s very pricey for pizza. We paid about $70 for two large pizza pies. I highly recommend trying it. I had plain and pepperoni pizza. 👌 perfection

Google
The absolute greatest pizza on earth. I am an Italian from New York and when me and my daughter are in LA, we eat at Joe’s every single lunch. It is the most amazing pizza and straight from New York. The people are nice Never slack on their pizza

Yelp
Yum! This is a great neighborhood pizza place. They always have 4 or 5 fresh pizzas by the slice or you can order a whole pie. They also make salads, calzones, pasta and sandwiches. Service is fast and polite, with a smile. Inside there is a TV playing the news, a few tables and some counter seating by the window. Outside there is a really nice quiet area with umbrellas and even some birds of paradise blooming! So pretty. Today I tried the barbecue chicken pizza and the caprese pizza by the slice. The bbq pizza was nice and flavorful, not too sweet. The caprese was good with lots of fresh basil and a delicious fresh marinara tomato sauce, but the mozzarella on top today was a bit rubbery in texture. The pizza crust is fantastic. On the outside terrace they had blooming birds of paradise plants, which is so nice for a mini mall. There's lots of parking in front as the mini mall has its own lot; if it's full upstairs then try the ramp and park underground.

Yelp
Joe's is like a late night staple if you're out in Hollywood. I've gone here for many years after going to events or going out dancing and drinking with friends. I've tried several types of their pizza and their White Pizza will always be #1. The way the ricotta melts in my mouth always with the other cheeses is just so delicious. I paid about $10.75 for 2 slices. The quality is the pizza isn't the very best I've had but the pizza still hits on a late night and that's your craving. The ambiance is your casual pizza palor. Nothing more nothing less. They have seating against the wall with stools and always several tables with chairs toward the back. It can be hard to secure seating, so just note that. The service was average. Not bad not stellar. The only thing I wish was different is that the pizza was hotter. It was luke warm when it was given to me and I was really looking forward to very melty cheese.

Yelp
Nasty! Gnarly! How can Portnoy give this a good score !??? Ordered pepperoni pizza for delivery. On right side sausage and extra cheese. I didn't receive the right order! It was just sausage on the right side. Where's the pepperoni? Ordered extra cheese on right side, but it didn't look like anything was extra. The pizza came out cold, part of the dough base was soggy and exposed . Floppy. Flimsy. And the cheese sauce barrier intermingled in a very bad way.

Yelp
Their basil smells like mildew. It grossed me out and I couldn't eat my pizza. Very disappointing. I called to alert the manager about proper basil storage, and some dude that barely spoke English told me that had no manager. Wow. This is not the first time we have ordered from Joe's, probably maybe the 10th time. They are always stellar. Not tonight though. Not quite sure what went wrong.

Yelp
This pizza is definitely one of the better options in the Hollywood area--fresh, hot, and full of flavor. That said, it's strictly a "eat it while it's hot" kind of pizza. If you're the type who enjoys cold leftovers the next day, this one might not be your go-to. But hey, that just means you have an excuse to finish the whole thing in one sitting!

Yelp
Absolutely love this pizza place ...... not just because the pizza is absolutely delicious but the service is like no other. They smile at you when you walk through the door and Joe the owner is a true gem!!

Yelp
Started off our LA pizza by the slice tour at Joes on Sunset. Came early so it wasn't busy. Located in a strip mall so parking was available. The vibe inside was def giving NY pizza. There were plenty of options available. From cheese to pepperoni to what we ordered - White pizza Caprese We waited with anticipation as they heated up our slices. Both starving. First bite and it was crispy with freshness from the tomatoes (caprese slice). White pizza was good also however didn't have as much flavor as the caprese slice did. Upon completion of our pizza tour I did thoroughly appreciate and enjoy the crispyness of their pizza. If I was to do another pizza tour - joes would be included again.

Yelp
Food - hit or miss Service - absolutely horrendous. I'm from NY - during hurricane sandy REAL ITALIAN pizza places used their brick ovens to give out food, These jerks hung up on me after they were paid for the order - confirmation attached. I would have picked it up - I live around the the corner .... But mind you it's an INFERNO IN LOS ANGELES RIGHT NOW!!!! awful. Shame on you.

Yelp
Besttttt pizzzaaaa in WeHo! This place is our go to after a long night of having fun in WeHo. They are open pretty late. My favorite one is their pepperoni, it's perfect. Their white pizza is a bit tasteless. The only downside of this place is their longgggggg preparation time.
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
I love Joe's Pizza. The food is fantastic. Only one complaint: none of the employees wear gloves. I saw them make a few pizzas with many ingredients without gloves. I saw them add food to my salad without wearing gloves. I didn't see gloves on any of the employees. I've been getting food from there for a few years. Today the employees didn't look clean and they didn't wear gloves while they handled the food.

Yelp
Don't EVER COME HERE, if you want good service and you want your order right. They screwed up my order and when I called to notify them, Luis said I would get a credit for the full amount. Then the owner Joe calls and at the end of the call, says he would honor the full credit. I get to the establishment and what happened? Joe didn't honor his word. I've come here for years and it's not about the credit. It's about, as man, as a business owner honoring your word.
google avatar

Aaron G.

Yelp
I went into Joe's Pizza for a quick slice, but the experience was anything but smooth. Upon entering, there was no one at the register or in sight. I literally had to walk to the back to get someone's attention just to get some service. When I finally did, the guy who helped me had to swat away flies from the pizza before tossing it in the oven--definitely not appetizing. I paid $5.51 for a slice, which didn't seem too bad at first, but once I tasted it, I realized it wasn't even worth 10 cents. The pizza came out burnt and inedible (as pictured). Needless to say, I won't be coming back--unless I want to get my enemy some terrible, burnt pizza. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Yelp
Prices is exorbitant. 26 for pizza. Ballin outta kontrol. But I will say, great sauce and good bite on crust. Also not very greasy which is a surprise. The cheese is the biggest weakness, tastes a little like I pizza I could get dt at a fraction of the price.

Yelp
You can be a pizza snob all you want but this is pretty darn good. Ill be back again. Nice atmosphere snugged away

Andrew J.

Yelp
I love Joes pizza. BUT!!! They seem to never get my order correct. Just now I ordered Grandma's pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms. It was difficult to make them understand what I wanted. What I received was pepperoni plus olives. How do you mistake mushrooms for olives. I called to let them know. I could not get them to understand that I ordered mushrooms but got olives. It's not rocket science. I'm not going to stop getting their pizza, because I love it. But they really need to get their act together and provide what the customer ordered

Brandon B.

Yelp
Perhaps their whole pies made to order are better. However, after three times of ordering slices from them, the best thing I have to say is that the slices are... edible. The slices seem like they were made many hours ago. They're theoretically supposed to warm slices up in the oven when you order but even when our delivery order arrives within 15 minutes the items are room temperature. Dough quality is seemingly the best part. Chewy and of a good quality. Everything else is really lacking. Most embarrassing of them all is the "grandma" slice. For those who don't know, this square slice is supposed somewhere between a thick Sicilian slice and a thinner New York slice. Sauce is layered on top of the cheese. Here they seem to just give you plain normal slice with marinara toss then toss a couple pieces of half-melted fresh mozzarella on it? It's bizarre and teetering on inedible.

Dawn A.

Yelp
Atmosphere - limited parking, limited seating, clean Taste - We ordered slice cheese and slice pepperoni. As good as the original Joe's Pizza in Midtown New York City. Crust was thin and crispy, Pizza sauce was hot and tasty. Customer Service - friendly and fast service on a Saturday afternoon. Price - Average

Whoever I.

Yelp
Inconsistent quality and I think the pizza is overpriced. This place is the best one of all the locations though. Decent white pizza but like I said it's not worth it knowing the quality is inconsistent.

Yelp
I couldn't eat it as soon as it was delivered, so review is of a day-old pizza. I asked for their "contactless" delivery. Doordash took contact seriously, updating only the website when the item was delivered in real-time. I ordered yesterday before my flight down on OAK wifi. Got on and off the plane, back to the LA home before delivery -- I checked when I got home -- it was "being prepared". Fair enough, I requested it at 4 and it was 3pm. A neighbour picked up the pie and brought it to the door this morning. "This had your name on it, Hasan, up the Arsenal!", they said. I accepted the pizza with a knowing smile -- this particular neighbour and I spend many a weekend morning with the premiere league on Peacock. Other than the crust drying up overnight, the pizza tastes fine after tossing it into the air fryer -- following the instructions given @ https://foodess.com/article/reheat-pizza-air-fryer/ -- the pie is a big one at 18 inches, caveat emptor. One star off for the crust being dry, which could be because of the conditions in which the pie spent the night. Still, intensely eatable (and edible, though I read that eatable implies the latter) with a healthy amount of dough to fill one up for a couple of meals. I'd provide pics, but I just ate the last bite.

Yelp
This is hands down the best pizza in Los Angeles. For years since moving to LA from New York I struggled to find a pizza in the same category as you can find in NYC. Finally I found Joes, which not only surpasses all the pizza places in LA, but even some in New York as well in my opinion. Everything is perfect, the thin crust, the cheese that melts in your mouth, the fresh tomato sauce, the savory toppings. A big big 10/10. If you get pizza in LA don't waste your money by going anywhere else. Go to Joes. The next time you want pizza go to Joes again. And the next time you want pizza and have the thought to try somewhere new don't listen to it and go to Joes AGAIN.

Yelp
So good. Quick bite. I went around lunch time and there was no line thankfully! I was starving so it hit the spot!
google avatar

Sky T.

Yelp
A little bit if NY style pizza in LA! Definitely best freshly made so getting it to go or later doesn't hit the same. This location is more take and go with a few tables inside and some on the sidewalk. Service was quick and friendly too. Overall, a good place if you need a quick pizza fix.
google avatar

Cindy T.

Yelp
I love this pizza, thin crust , not thick and soggy like most , they use great cheese and it's always done perfect . I don't eat a lot , however , I can eat 3 slices easy here !!!
google avatar

Yelp
JOE'S, check us out! WE LOVED THE PIE LAST NIGHT! Some of the best in LA! Truly you make an amazing pizza! Love eating it! Gonna keep it going! We'll be eating it more!!! THANK YOU!

Tom B.

Yelp
I just had my order from Joe's delivered of three slices of pizza with sausage and mushroom. All three were not only charred but burned. Needless to say, that destroyed the moment of want. The additions were not even cooked. I called Joe's, and it went to voicemail. I do not understand someone putting burned pizza to be delivered and thinking the customer will accept it w/o a complaint. Joe's is a few blocks from me, and there are times I will go there with friends, order, and sit out on the patio. It isn't an inviting atmosphere and NOT friendly people. The unfortunate part of this is that they do have great pizza when it's done correctly, and I will continue to give my business. I hope they read their reviews to avoid problems like this in the future and to prevent the same situation for others.
google avatar

Timothy M.

Yelp
Awesome pizza place. They give their slices at the end of the night to homeless people who stop by. I love their white pizza.
google avatar

Rianne A.

Yelp
I've never had New York style pizza until Joes and was very impressed. With such a thin crust, I wasn't expecting the pizza to be still delectable and bursting with flavors - but it was just that with a crispy crust. I think this complemented the pizza well, and though it was just a simple cheese pizza, it was definitely one of my favorite slices to date.
google avatar

M. M.

Yelp
eh. It was a place that had food. The sauce was seriously running with the cheese so it was a little bit of a mess to try to eat the pizza. The service was good the poor guys were trying to do their best to make our pizza the way we would want it. The food quality was crappy and I would say skip it but its so hard to get food in west hollywood because of parking so we had to make do. Our first pick had no parking so we went to this location. If you have time and do not have a car I say go somewhere else.
google avatar

Ian P.

Yelp
This is the weakest Joe's location I have been to. There's basically no parking. There's a few tables outside and a few more inside. I recommend order a fresh pie incase the slices have been sitting around for a few hours.

Mikey F.

Yelp
Food and service were unbearable. Especially the staff. Disrespectful and entitled. Misleading and hours online were posted incorrectly. Pizza quality was worst in LA. Nothing like the NY location.
google avatar

Loyal C.

Yelp
These bad reviews are indeed true it's nothing but plain nasty pizza collecting bacteria, while the guys are all over the place being unsanitary. I wouldn't even put those in my trash. Department of health needs to pay this dumpster a visit.
google avatar

Fazil A.

Yelp
KkApparently this place is owned by the brother or nephew or cousin of the main guy that oensw Joes Pizza in NYC. Having NYC pizza in LA? I had to give it a try it. I have to say, it's pretty decent. Unfortunately they use LA water to make the crust and you can tell a bit. Otherwise it holds up in comparison pretty well. Much better than anything I've had nearby.

Crystal B.

Yelp
Live next door, send guests/business here all the time - JUST realized when it comes to serving GF/Vegan it depends on how i am dressed, if they are willing to serve me or not. So as a local; after being denied again during business hours because I am in my PJs and not dressed as a tourist I am officially DONE sending business their way. And will be posting an ad for the rest of my complex to avoid this "tourist only" pizza place. - You think your business can survive without local support - good luck. - When I come in with film industry guests they can't get the GF / Vegan out fast enough- but me solo - apparently I don't fit their "client base." So... good luck. Hope the "pizza by the slice" crowd is enough to keep you afloat because you just lost 152 units next door.

Yelp
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. After a day at Universal I order a pizza from my phone. I arrived 10-15 minutes after estimated food was to be ready. The cashier could not find my order. He kept saying "No order was received" even though I ordered via their website and received a confirmation text. I responded "I better not be charged." He sent me away and once more confirmed "No order was received". Hours later received text "Your order is now ready." I was charger over $30 for no food what so ever. This business did not reimburse me when I contested the charge on my credit bill. They are dishonest. They are a scam!
google avatar

Katelyn C.

Yelp
Best pie, best service, best vibes Cannolis are chefs kiss, &sausage is bliss Anything on the menu you're gonna be :):):)
google avatar

Wilson N.

Yelp
Pretty good pizza I would say. Huge pies and kept pretty well in the box after picking up and bringing it back home. The parking lot is a disaster though, everyone is double parked but if your order is ready, you should be able to run in and out hopefully quickly
google avatar

Lina K.

Yelp
We were in the area and needed to kill some time before an event and saw Joes so we decided to stop in and grab a slice. I was debating on which toppings to get and one of the employees recommended their white pizza so decided to give it a try. The pizza was amazing and I loved the ricotta dabbed on top and didn't feel too heavy after eating it. It's a smaller spot but there are seats to dine in and enjoy the slice right away. Glad we were in the area and could check it out.

Diego M.

Yelp
Delicious pizza for a great prince every time I come down to LA I have to get some. If only the parking was better. Great experiences every time. 5 starts.

Shani A.

Yelp
Have always loved this place. Been coming to this location ever since they opened. Pizzas are the most delicious we have ever eaten and sausage and pepper sandwich is to die for. These are true New York style pizzas. Have met the owner a few times and he is always gracious.
google avatar

Numie S.

Yelp
One of the worst joes pizza ordered chicken parm and a pizza got a burnt chicken parm and a cold pizza that they made hours ago. You guys suck, shut your store down and do something else
google avatar

Kellan M.

Yelp
Awful service. Lazy. Bad prices. Mediocre food. $ several dollars for a tiny cup of watery red sauce. They only survive because they're open late and there aren't many options around. Honestly, get something else or go to 7-11 for pizza. You'll save money and get the same quality.
google avatar

Anny O.

Yelp
I've tried Joes in NYC and not sure if they are the same but it was good! I got pepperoni and it was a good basic pizza but it is pretty oily. The crust is thin. We also got garlic knots. Those were just okay.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
All the way from NYC and in LA for the eating. I've been to New York locations so knew what I was in for with their pizza. By the slice and reasonable prices. Big slices and tasty as can be. I especially like their white pizza....fresh mozzarella!
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
I wasn't as wowed by the pizza as I thought I would be. They had plenty available by the slice, you can order online or call in your order if you want an entire pizza or more. They were very friendly and welcoming, pizza was ready on time and plenty to share. Not much in terms of flavor, nothing stood out something I would need to have again. Not bad, but also not worth rushing back four.

Puneet C.

Yelp
Made me wait 35 minutes Served 7 people in front of me Then zero apology Said : you should have ordered online instead of coming I said: I even tipped you for promptness And he said take it back. We don't need your tip! What a pathetic staff Owner should know who is running this show!
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
Tasty pizzas! crisp and tasty. Hand tossed, thin crust that is made fresh everyday, tried the White,Caprese, and Cheese, all tasted great. The Sunset Strip location has easy parking and outside patio seating.

Timothy B.

Yelp
When the pizza is fresh it's one of the best in LA, but these people think they're slick on delivery and ship out premade pies and try to pass em off as fresh. Despicable shenanigans to say the least.

Jewel E.

Yelp
Sometimes it is so incredibly yummy other times you wonder why they forgot to put cheese on the pizza
google avatar

Saruul A.

Yelp
We ordered the bbq chicken pizza but it came like a cardboard, the chicken was so dry, not fresh at all. I have never seen a pizza with such little cheese and cheap, overly sweet bbq sauce splashed over it. The crust was too big, almost 3 inches of nothing but stale flat bread... The delivery driver took 30minutes since picking up the order which did not help and it came luke warm. We tried the oven and microwave to heat it up but it did not really help that much. We had half because we were starving but the remaining half was inedible. A disappointing experience for sure. For $30.00, it is not worth it at all. We ordered through Postmates and was able to get a full refund... We appreciate the effort but we definitely will not be ordering again.
