Nine Best Charleston Doughnut Destinations | Eater Carolinas

"This Park West doughnut shop stays busy, with lines out the door, so come early for the best selection. The case is full of classic crullers, cake doughnuts, glazed varieties, and pretty much any traditional flavor you could want." - Parker Milner

Google
LOVE their donuts and breakfast sandwiches! All donuts are drool worthy but the Boston creams are truly to die for. I love the culture between the staff as well- it feels like they are all one big happy family ready to work together to make your order exactly how you want it. All of their espresso drinks are also great. You can never go wrong with really anything they offer.

Google
We have been on the hunt for a long time to find the best donut shop in Charleston and this is definitely it!! The donuts have great texture and are always fresh! Plus we love the large variety of flavors they offer! We love them so much we served their donuts at our wedding! Placing the large order ahead of time with Stevie was very easy! They were very accommodating and had the order ready to go when we arrived for pick-up! Thanks guys for help making our big day special!

Google
Visiting in town for a graduation. Partner found this place and drug me out of bed for it, and it was totally worth it! Got their Dragon breakfast sandwich and it was phenomenal! The sandwich was big and all of the ingredients used were very good. The doughnuts also looked really good as well but didn't get one. With the great food also came with quick and friendly service. If I lived around here I would probably frequent this establishment.

Google
We arrived at 10 and there was hardly anything left to choose from. I would say it's not worth a trip if you're not staying really close by and can't get there by 8. Bagels were meh, I've had way better but the coffee was good. I had a white mocha Latte. The donut I did have, Boston cream, was really good though just wish they would have a better selection for later arrivals.

Google
I’ve been going here since I was a child. Their breakfast sandwiches are some of my favorite in the CHS area. I also love their donuts. This is one of the places I would miss if I leave Mt. Pleasant.

Google
Come see why Joey Bag A Donuts was awarded the best donut shop in the Charleston area! A local favorite spot to grab a bite to eat, cup of coffee or even some delicious ice cream during the summer months! Get there early for the best selection! A few of our favorites are the Cookie Monster, Cookies & Cream, Peanut Butter Cup and the Maple Bacon (order these ahead of time to make sure they are ready)!

Google
If you’re looking for an honest review here it is : I stopped her after driving my friend to the airport in Charleston. I originally got a dozen donuts & a smoothie. There are so many donuts but they took their time to tell me what was what when I asked. I got out to my car but I couldn’t stop thinking about the French toast bagel. I went back in & ordered it. BEST decision I ever made. I drove back home to MB (1.5 hrs) my smoothie was still iced and did not taste watered down. If you’re thinking of stopping here please do it. The service was genuine & I will probably make the drive again just for the service

Google
We visited from West Ashley and took the cashier's recommendation for a dulce frappe. We also tried the pumpkin spice coffee, maple bacon donut, and smores donut. All were fantastic and we'll be back.

Yelp
We visited Joey TWICE during our family vacation. TWICE. Between my Sister and Grandfather--we always have to have donuts in the house. It is a must. In doing so, I am pretty sure we tried the entire menu...All of them are good. No complaints! Get there early, get them fresh, get them warm, and enjoy. Try not to eat half of them on the way home!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so cool!!! I really like the attitude of the place, if a place can have an attitude. I'm amazed how many people can fit inside this small donut - coffee shop. The donuts are so fresh and delicious!! I would make a special trip to visit it if I was in the area!!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Probably one of the best donuts I've ever eaten. The service is always great as well as their bagels, sandwiches, coffees and other specialty drinks.
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Really good doughnuts... dare I say... the best in the greater Charleston area! No boxes for smaller quantities which is rough because I hate doughnuts getting ugly in transport but next time I come by for doughnuts I'll bring my own box!
google avatar

Yelp
We traveled 3 hours to get these donuts! Absolutely loved the powdered cream and the long John! The donuts are super soft. Pretty quick service especially with the long line! Go early for the best selection!

Yelp
Yummy donuts are served in this hidden shop, located in Park West, a community in Mt Pleasant, SC. The staff are warm as the donuts, and friendly too boot! Parking is scarce because of the surrounding businesses but there is always a space close enough to make a stop. If you decide to have your morning "fix" in house, there is plenty of seating in & outside.

Daniel J.

Yelp
2 sandwiches took about 30 minutes, donuts were staked on top of each other, very messy, flies around me and very dirty floor

Yelp
Beginning the month with donuts, we got hooked on continuing to get them. I've followed Joey Bag A Donuts for a while on Instagram, and have read to get there early for the best selection. Waking up early Saturday morning I find myself making the drive from North Chuck to Mt P in search of some more delicious local donuts. And Joey's didn't disappoint. The shop is easy. Walk in, order, pay, move to your left to pick up what you ordered and leave. I stopped to snap a pic of my donuts before leaving, and they have a little bar ledge around the windows. I feel like there was stools for people to stay and eat in, but I don't remember. I got us a dozen variety. I like that they have both filled and cake donuts. We like to cut in half and share so we can try different kinds. I liked the flavors of the ones I tried and so did everyone else!

Jeff C.

Yelp
The donuts are good. But the service is spotty depending on who happens to be working the register. They often forget parts of my order and leave you waiting and wondering what is going on.
google avatar

Michael Q.

Yelp
OOF, MADÓNN! So you're looking for a quick bite between errands? Fuhgeddaboutit. You've come to the right place. Joey's has a New York, bodega vibe in the Lowcountry. Many have tried...and failed because they're disingenuous and trying to be funny. Speed, attitude, and smiles round out Joey's east coast service model. As soon as you walk in the door, you understand EXACTLY what Joey is going for. Joey's is the perfect place to grab a coffee, a few bagels, and donuts while you're squeezing in errands before 17 becomes a mess during rush hour. We enjoyed the cinnamon raisin and mult bagel egg sandwiches. Unsure if bagels are made in house; both bagels and sandwiches were made to order and extremely hot/fresh. Service was friendly and clearly/accurately communicated "prep" times. Our only feedback would be to either lower the price point or increase (prepared food) portions. We look forward to our next visit to Joey's!

Yelp
Great selection of donuts and bagels! The character donuts are so fun for the grandkids!

Luna G.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service, came well before closing and got attitude the moment we walked in the door! Young man early 20s with red hair tall skinny, he mocked me when he asked for my name and tossed over a box of our treats very rudely! We made sure to keep the order small and simple but was met with disrespect.

Yelp
First time going. I ask the girl behind the counter to tell me what type of doughnuts I was pointing at. She was getting frustrated over my questions. Leaving me and helping other customers. I told her one of the doughnuts I wanted. I was informed that I have pay for the amount of doughnuts before I make my selection. What type of dumb shit is that. Why would I pay for the quantity. If I don't know what type of doughnuts you have since you don't have the patience to tell me your selection. I choose two. There not "Dough" doughnuts. They tasted ok. But the attitude I got was unwelcoming. I won't be back

Dawn M.

Yelp
Sadly to say, Joey Bag of doughnuts isn't what it used to be. You hardly see the owner there any longer. You have teenagers running the place so go figure! sadly, these are the worst bagels I've ever purchased. Have you ever tried to eat a frozen bagel? terrible bagels!!!!hard as a rock. You could hurt somebody with these bagels. will no longer give Joey my business going down the street.

Mary L.

Yelp
Went this morning (9/8/24) and had a very rude young man help us. I pointed to one and asked what it was but since he wasn't really paying attention he just grabbed it and dropped it in the bag. His coworkers were nice and obviously embarrassed by his bad attitude. Donuts weren't that good either. Won't be going back here again.

Yelp
I drove from Isle of Palms to get these donuts one morning for the kids and they did not disappoint for the most part. They have a great selection of so many different flavors and the prices were decent. In terms of quality, it's hard to compare to some of the delicious donuts we find in Atlanta, but these were good and obviously a grade above the chain donut options. The coffee was really good!

Warren Or Faye H.

Yelp
Was particularly pleased about their willingness to, upon request, make the kind of doughnuts we wanted despite not having any in the display case.

Yelp
We visit Charleston 1-2 times a year, and Joey's has become a staple for us. The coconut latte is sooooooooo good omg - you HAVE to get coffee when you get your donuts - don't be a psychopath. we always get a random assortment & the red velvet was a winner this time around.
google avatar

Wioletta K.

Yelp
They made me a Bavarian cream in powder donut normally not done. There was a crowd but they went really quick. Cute little shop with seating.

Yelp
Nice donuts : ) worker was very helpful & friendly they had black hair, should give raise

Yelp
Local coffee and donut shop in Mount Pleasant. Can tell that locals love this place. No frills, just serves good food and drinks. I got their mocha latte and it was delicious. Got a large and it was huuuuge. Definitely got my caffeine fix. Got my hubby the Pecan Praline donut and it was delicious. Not too crazy sweet for his liking. It's cool that all their donuts are prices the same as they have a wide variety of specialties such as Cookie Monster, s'mores, M&Ms, samoas etc. they also offer bagels and sandwiches for your breakfast fix. Overall love my experience here. Support local businesses!

Bailey P.

Yelp
In town on a business trip and one of my coworkers told me about Joey bag a donuts and with it being my last day in Charleston til I have to drive back to Jacksonville I thought why not go try it out. Let me just say very upset I waited til my last day to try it out. Got two donuts; fruity pebble and chocolate cake w/ glaze, a cinnamon raisin bagel w/ strawberry cream cheese, and an iced coffee. Not a single thing wasn't great. Truthfully would just come to Charleston for one of these fruity pebbles donuts. Service was also very good. The kind girl who took my order also made my entire order so big props to her.

Yelp
My kids had been here before but I hadn't. This place is such a cute little spot. We all picked out 4 different donuts and I had the everything bagel with lite veggie cream cheese. Service was prompt and friendly. My kids enjoyed themselves and the bagel I had was pretty good although I shared half of it with my kids. I'm glad this place is close to home, it's definitely pricey but their donuts are too cute! Definitely a special treat!!!

James J.

Yelp
Excellent selection of donuts, great staff, convenient SC, delectable place, grandson loves to go there.

Yelp
Out and about this morning so I figured I'd give them a try. Had to drive a bit to get there but I wanted to see if they were as good as the pictures on the website. Small place with a huge line. That tells you something. The service was fast. Ordered a few things: bagels, bialy, donuts, sandwich and coffee. The coffee was really good! The donuts, soft and appealing. After living in NYC and through the years had the wonderful experience of Jewish delicatessens all over Manhattan and the other boroughs I was hoping for the best. The sandwich was good although the bagel was a little bland. For some reason I remember the dough being a little saltier, not that I need it. Other than that I'd say it was pretty good. Definitely a "if I'm in the area" spot to go to again.

Yelp
The bagels and coffee are to die for!! I love getting a breakfast bagel with a hashbrown on it. It's worth getting up extra early for. I've only had the donuts a few times and I've never had a bad one. They're always so friendly and timely. Reminds me of a mom and pop bagel place i went to growing up!

Amy S.

Yelp
We had no idea this was an OHIO STATE fan club! Not only was the team amazing and kind, the donuts are out of this world! Go OH!

James P.

Yelp
This listing says if you are in the Park West area drop in. I'm on Daniel Island and my son insists we drive 20 minutes to get these donuts. Delicious and every bit worth the drive.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Ideally I'd like more of the classic variety than the cereal-smeared-on-chocolate-frosting-for-the-little cutesy snowflake/hipster brats. Not to mention a 2-3 dollar price point for a donut... New England style donut shoppes are more my thing (the classic glazed, jelly etc. etc.) but Joey's coffee is worth the three starts (really good...). The staff are very nice as well. It's a bit of a drive on 17, but in Mt. Pleasant it's one of two outside of Dunkin (which I rarely do back up north anyway...). The other one (Fractured Prune) is the same idea (another hipster/snowflake donut joint). I'd just like a really good apple spice filled jelly please... don't turn me into the Great Cornholio with these off-the-charts sugar concoctions...
google avatar

Dani N.

Yelp
Stopped in for a donut this morning around 8. Joey bag a donuts was busy! The line was out the door. Service was quick & friendly. I tried the smores & Oreo donut. The smores donut was fresh, soft, and sweet. It was a good donut, but it was a little sweet for my personal preference. I will be back to try a breakfast sandwich!
google avatar

William T.

Yelp
Fresh donuts in unique flavors. The donuts were large and tasty! Good prices for specialty donuts. They also have a variety of other foods.

sheryl f.

Yelp
Nope! Sorry, but $25 for a dozen doughnuts is ridiculous. I can see Duck Doughnuts with the crazy toppings, but this rate hike seems excessive. I feel as it is also unfair to the consumer to actually erase the price board, and leave it blank, so no one is aware of the price hike until after they order: I attended an event, this morning, where everyone usually brings Joey Doughnuts to donate and instead everyone had brought Dunkin. I love Joey Doughnuts, but just can't justify $25 for a dozen doughnuts.

Yelp
I cannot believe I forgot to take a photo of these delicious donuts. We got so caught up in eating them that I didn't even have time. They were devoured immediately when we got home with them. My 5 yr old picked a chocolate covered donut with sprinkles and one with mini m & m's. I picked the s'mores and the most delicious chocolate fluff filled powdered donut. They do not scrimp on fillings here. Not only do they fill the middle of the donut but they slice it open and slather the inside with filling. It is genius. Every bite has filling! My husband got the peanut butter fluff donut with a peanut butter cup on top and he loved the jelly donut just as much. Because again, the jelly was completed slathered throughout the middle so you had some in every single bite. I'm not sure why other people said they were really expensive. These are craft donuts folks and 6 donuts for $8.99 is not expensive.

Michael J.

Yelp
Definitely worth going slightly off US17 to this little tucked in location if you must have donuts. Variety and quality a cut above DD or KK. Not the very best donuts I've ever had; if you've got a place that makes giant yeast-y ones, or a place that hand dips warm ones right off the conveyor into your choice of icing and topping, then you know what I mean. This place isn't like that, but good, fresh donuts with friendly service managing the long line as best they can. Some flavors are strictly for kid-appeal, like fruity pebbles or M&M toppings. We shared a half dozen - 3 filled, 1 frosted, 2 cake style. Ambiance is just quick counter service. Not really designed for hanging out or a particular vibe. We did not try the coffee.
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
We went to Joey's for breakfast and picked up three donuts. They were very good. I had the maple cream filled. It was delicious and very sweet - had to stuff myself to finish. My husband picked a cruller and a chocolate cream filled (which we ended up sharing later). He seemed to enjoy the cruller and the chocolate cream filled made a great treat for later in the day. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Fantastic donuts . Got a dozen for the family and others . We loved it and like the selection as well as the taste. Do yourself a favor and stop in.

Yelp
After my last visit, I sadly need to knock Joeys down a peg. The food is great and I love the people there. The family are all so nice every time I see them so I hate to say it but, it's getting way too expensive. I'm not sure if it has actually changed much in price over time slowly or if I am just realizing it more after my last visit. I went in and ordered two ham, egg, and cheese bagel sandwiches, a medium Iced Caramel Macchiato, and a small Frappuccino with caramel and sea salt from the specials board. That makes two specialty drinks (one being a small) and two breakfast sandwiches and the total came to $22.46. I then added a $2 tip, because the staff is great, bringing my total to just under $25. Is it just me or does that seem insane? I think it might be time to evaluate the prices.
google avatar

Ray P.

Yelp
This place is great! Friendly staff and AMAZING Doughnuts! I asked for them to put together an assorted 1/2 dozen for my team and it was fantastic! Definitely will be back again!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Great spot to pick up some delicious and creative donuts. The choice is almost baffling, so many great and tempting creations. Skip DD and come here instead! You won't regret it!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I have no choice but to give Joey Bag A Donuts 5 stars! I go here way too much for bagels and coffee. While the donuts are good; Joey's got the best bagels in town. Joey's also kicks butt when it comes to good coffee; while I stick with the regular coffee, they also have espressos, cappuccinos, frappaccinos, and many other specialty drinks. The staff here is some of the friendliest around! They always greet you with a smile, remember your name, and are always on the ball. Even when the line is out the door I'll wait in it just to get a delicious bagel and coffee!
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
For the price, which is the price you'd pay for craft donuts, I expected a lot more. They're good but not great. Nothing stood out to me about the texture of the donut or the quality of the ingredients to warrant $2-3/donut price point. Service was friendly though.
google avatar

Yelp
I gave this review two stars because we have been loyal customers for years. But, today's visit was terrible and similar to another reviewers experience below. When I walked in the music was so loud it was jarring. I was yelling to give my order to the woman behind the counter. She seemed annoyed by the music too and said she was ready to go home because the music had gotten to her today. I ordered 2 bagels and a smoothie for take out. When I got home my order was completely WRONG! My egg and cheese on a cheddar bagel was egg and cheese on a plain bagel that was extremely doughy- barely seemed cooked. I also ordered an Everything bagel (not toasted) with veggie cream cheese. When we opened it at home it was toasted and had plain cream cheese. Unacceptable. If they needed to make modifications to my order due to the availability of what they had in stock they should have informed me. I don't mind paying for quality, but my order was over 17 dollars for two bagels and a smoothie-- and it was completely wrong and tasted terrible. We won't be returning to Joeys in the future as it seems they have gone way downhill and not sure if there is any management at all.

Yolanda D.

Yelp
Donuts are awesome, such a clean and nice donut shop. They also have great customer service
google avatar

Myra M.

Yelp
Picked up graduation donuts - they decorated in school colors. Yum! Perfect to start a great day. Perfect colors and special sprinkles. Does it get any better than a perfect donut and icing and sprinkles? Don't think so. And thanks for the kind note.

Grace A.

Yelp
They are excellent! Ordered custom donuts for my son's class to celebrate his birthday... needless to say, a huge hit! Order in advance and the team at Joey is very flexible and helpful when my pickup time changed! So helpful!
google avatar

Mikey B.

Yelp
Awesome coffee!! Like REALLY good! The breakfast sandwiches are legit. It's not all about donuts here! Although they looked great.
google avatar

Mason R.

Yelp
Wish I would have taken a picture of not only the food I bought but the display with all the options. They are always mixing it up including seasonal themed donuts as well. The warm maple/bacon is my favorite, sooooo good and melts everywhere (grab napkins). Their bagel sandwiches and spreads are really good too. Also, they have Maple boston creme donuts - CRAZY good. I also downed a fruity pebble donut - was just a normal cake donut but the fruity pebbles added quite a punch of flavor that I wasn't expecting. All in all I will continue to come in. It's close to my house, the prices are reasonable and the selection is awesome. All that and I haven't even mentioned that the staff have always been incredibly nice and friendly.
google avatar

Denise F.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but the donuts are nothing to write home about. They tasted like day old dry doughnuts. The one exception was the maple Bavarian doughnut, my son loved it.
google avatar

Tiffany P.

Yelp
The food at Joeys is good but it's way over priced and the hours have become comical. I was not impressed with the service I received, my son and I were the only ones in there, about an hour before they closed. He took awhile to pick out his donuts and the women helping us acted so put out and irritated. My daughter does frequent this place and she said the service is good most of time. We have been back a few times in a pinch. The bagel sandwiches are good, and the coffee is good but over priced and inconvenient. I'm sure I'll go back but only because it's the only place in town now that Charelston donuts closed. Someone please open another donut shop.
