Top Restaurants and Bars to Catch Live Music in Bux-Mont | Eater Philly

"An esteemed music venue and bar situated in New Hope, John and Peter’s has been a home for stars like George Thorogood and the iconic alternative rock band Ween. Each Wednesday, anticipation crescendos for “The Invitational” jam, where the house band rocks an opening set before inviting other musicians on stage to mix it up. Whether you come to make music or listen, you’ll embrace the harmonies in this colorful setting." - Sam Herring

Monmouth Dog NJ

Google
NEW HOPE, PA: John And Peter's is famous for being a music club for over 50 years and they are also a restaurant with an outdoor patio that is dog friendly! With the eye-catching colors of the building and the Best Burger in Town banner, we were drawn right in to have dinner and we were happy to see another dog enjoying the day with their owner and even a pet ferret was a special guest with their family. Rocking an old-school and divey ambience, this place was popular on a chilly day with many people enjoying the large food menu, full bar, and colorful characters. With the area of New Hope becoming more upscale, this place is keeping going by doing what they do best, by keeping the bohemian spirit of New Hope going.

Very small bar area, where band merch is sold too. downstairs is the music. Low ceiling for the stage area was odd as one band member had to stoop. Overall was kinda uncomfortable place to watch a band. Bathrooms are tiny and right in the crowd area.

Omy Bugazia

Google
pretty much the only decent place to drink in New Hope or Lambertville after 8PM so for that reason it gets 5 stars. the great music and professional staff is just icing on the cake.

Google
Regional live music mecca with local/chill dive bar vibes. I've enjoyed gigging there over the years with The Fletchers and rocking out to other cool bands as well as at the Invitational. It's a stone groove and fun hang.

Was there to support a poet musician that I know. Ordered hummus dip and pita was good and fresh. Service was good as well.

Google
Great food great atmosphere. The music is incredible. Really loved the pulled pork and tater tot’s. That was just incredible. A great bar with a lot of history. One of those go to places a New Hope.

I was there with friends. The waitress was great. The atmosphere and band was great. I ordered onions rings and half of them were fried so hard that I would have broke a tooth if I tried to eat them. Maybe some of their other food is better but I'm not ordering the onion rings again 😉

Stopped in for a quick bite. My wife loved the burger and tots, I had a cheese steak (wit) which was also delicious. Would definitely return next time we’re in the area!

Yelp
I was here last Sunday night for a show. Such a cool place to see a show. I will let you know that it is small. Small as in very small. I was glad it was off season so we got a parking spot right near the entrance. After some confusion as to where to go, we realized that the large door to go into the music venue inside the bar area, was closed. We were told that after sound check they'd open the doors to let ticket holders in. We decided since we were extra early, to order some food. We sat in one of the two booths in the bar area. I had chicken fingers and fries and my boyfriend got the cheesesteak. All of the food was good!

Yelp
Stopped by today with my husband for a drink and ended up staying almost 3 hours sitting at the bar. Drinks and food were a 10/10. You would never think a hole in the wall type spot would have great food but we were pleasantly surprised at how awesome the food was. The bartender who told us his nick name was pumpkin was just wonderful and extremely personable and fun to talk to. My husband and I cannot wait to go back again.

Yelp
Just had lunch and the food was awful. Chicken wings were frozen, pickle chips were burnt and greasy and all of the remaining food was tasteless and greasy. Don't waste your time or money in this establishment. Gave them one star because there was nothing below.

Yelp
I stopped in for a burger my first time in 20 year, the place has not changed, same old John & Peter's that I remembered Friendly staff good food , hands down Best burgers in New Hope !

Yelp
Avoid a wait at the more popular places and take a seat outside at John & Peter's. It's a casual stop for drinks and bar food. They were out of Turkey burgers today so I went with a veggie burger, and I'm glad I did. The Pattie's had an outer layer of crunch and I was happy I added caramelizadme onions. Burgers come with chips instead of fries, but you can choose to change that for an extra couple of dollars. If you head inside, you may run into some live music. Overall a low key place to escape the heat for a bit as you enjoy New Hope.

Yelp
wow great place! they took us last minute on a saturday night and their food was delicious. I'd recommend sitting outside in the way back. The server was so nice and gave us great recommendations! the pulled pork sandwich was sloppy but absolutely delicious. Also do yourself a favor and get the maple chipotle wings, don't pick any other flavor of wing. overall a great experience and my friends and i will be visiting again!!! Absolutely fantastic after a night of drinking. MARGARITAS ARE STRONG but welcome ;)

Yelp
I must've passed this bar 89 million times as I strolled through New Hope. This particular warm spring day, hubby and I did not want to wait around for a table to open at Fran's and wanted to get a drink and some food outside. So, we sat at John & Peter's outside section which is surprisingly cute, and do not be fooled, is much larger toward the back. I always see people tight in that front area smoking, but there are tables and fans in the back! As for food, sadly we were told the kitchen had over an hour wait, so we were unable to eat anything right away (whomp, whomp), but we waited around and finally got a burger and a ruben. The ruben was super awesome, way better than a regular cheeseburger (do not be fooled by that big best burger in town sign up front). The tator tots were also super crunchy and perfect - so yay to all that goodness. As for drinks, I went against my better judgement and ordered a margarita at a dive bar, and was not disappointed at all. The margarita was solid, and paired with a corona, it was even better! Our waiter and bartender were super cool and came by to check on us regularly. I look forward to adding this place as one of our regular spots in New Hope.

Yelp
I am 99% sure that John & Peter's is not counting on their Cheesesteak business. A guy was wearing a 'Tattooed Mom ' t-shirt. I can see John & Peter's being the 'Tattooed Mom' of New Hope. If you're in New Hope and your want to go where the locals go and you're hungry for a cheesesteak, John and Peter's is the place for you.

Yelp
Best Burgers in town and the gator tots are world famous all because they cook them perfectly Eat outdoors when you can it's like your on vacation
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
Whatever you do do not eat here, plenty of better options in town, the kitchen area is filthy- check the health code violations for yourself. Also if you do choose to patronize this place don't drink the drafts as the taps are not clean.

Yelp
If I could marry the bbq pulled pork tater tots, I would. Don't miss out on this moment y'all.

Yelp
Great place!! Love the service and people. Highly recommended to visit whether during the day or an evening for music.

Yelp
Best bar in town. Good food, music, priced and friendly staff. Open late as well. Wednesdays are a must after 9 for the best music night in the area
google avatar

Yelp
Live music every night? Really? REALLY! Such a fun place! I was greeted exclusively by the singer on stage and everyone gave me a round of applause for arriving! And this was a common theme of the night. So much applause for everyone and all the great music and fun environment. Just so much fun loving togetherness. I mean wow! Didn't even taste much of the menu. It's just the environment itself that could make up for even the most disastrous cooking. I tried Fried pickles and G&T. Good times!

Yelp
This place is epic! We started our anniversary trip here! The booze are so yummy and the food portions are out of this world! We should have shared a burger but we are so happy with everything we got. YOU MUST ORDER THE NACHO TATOR TOTS. Just wow!

Yelp
Fantastic bar in New Hope. Saw Eddie Pepitone for a comedy show there, service from staff was excellent.

Yelp
Passing through town and landed here a couple of times; kept coming back because it was a much more casual and divey (in a good way) atmosphere than a lot of the surrounding places. The inside is a dark, cool, low-ceiling older bar with cool stained glass art. There is a small exterior patio with shade. Dogs seem to be welcome. Excellent bartenders. Recommended if you like dive bars with character!
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this great little dive bar and were treated to some of the best rock 'n' roll music we've heard in a long time. A little venue reminded me of days long past when you could just walk in and listen to music anywhere but that's not the case these days. Anyway they have good food pub food burgers chicken wings and great beers and siders we really enjoyed it.. and will be back!

K D.

Yelp
Nice spot with high quality live music. Jam bands with $5 cover. Reasonably priced drinks. Loud!

Yelp
The service here is horrible . Sitting at a table for 20min at 9:25pm I to put in order of buffalo chicken wings .

Glenn G.

Yelp
It's Looks like a hole in the wall . But don't let the looks deceive you ... it's a great place great music and fantastic hamburgers Chicken wings hotdogs really good beers and drinks

Yelp
This is an ICON of New Hope. Small intimate bar with great entertainment. Not bad bar food. Truly an experience!

Yelp
this no-good, no-nonsense nook is the most wonderfully worn, tattered and torn treasure in new hope's hairy, bedazzled chest - a magical cavern bubbling with debauchery, loyalty & bubbly; where humble hedonists go to slurp the fuckballz out of life (with causal abandon). show it your unadorned love and alcoholic affection, and if it loves you back, congratulations - you are a mad-decent, dope-as-fuck motherfucker. Just like us.

Yelp
John & Peter's Place in New Hope is one of my favorite dive bars to goto. They frequently have some great bands on their calendar. One of my favorite bands "Rainbow Fresh" often performs here. http://www.rainbowfreshmusic.com/ I saw them perform twice in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and luckily enough without any notice or knowledge, they were performing at John & Peter's when we came to New Hope. They perform some really good original music and they also play a Led Zep song or two during their performances. I still have one of their old albums in my car. As for John & Peter's. Food and drinks are well priced compared to every other joint on Main St. Their portions are quite large. The bartenders are really friendly. I wish their restroom could be a little cleaner and better air ventilation. Other than that, it's a fun place to be in New Hope.

Yelp
What a cute bar..great burgers! Inside is adorable.. Will be back when there's Iive music

Yelp
First time for us... A nice spot to grab a drink and munchie on a summer afternoon. Not crowded at all, except for the 3 guys having a great time at the bar. We had Margaritas (not very good at all) and Magic Hats along with a couple of appetizers. The deep fried pickles with dipping sauce were excellent (thanks for the tip, Mike) and the potstickers were just okay. We'll have to give it another try next time we are in town.

Yelp
Walking through New Hope looking for a place with a good burger menu came across this little hole in the wall bar with patio and decided to try it out. The onion rings were fabulous with a large serving for just $5! But the burgers were fabulous, one of the best burgers I've had! I love build your own burgers cause they make it jut the way you like it! My husband got bacon cheese burger and the bacon was perfectly crispy unlike most places never cook the bacon well enough! The sautéed onion & mushrooms on mine were great!! The inside is a small the pub and the bathrooms are tiny but do the job, there was a stage inside so I assume they have live music some nights also. It's a small little bar like place but with a great burger & that's the really important part! The waitress was great & friendly too! Would definitely visit again when in the mood for a great burger! :)

Yelp
Been coming to John and Peter's forever. Always awesome. Great food, music and atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Yelp
TERRIBLE!!!! I've gone here with family to order drinks before and I thought it was an alright spot. I decided to bring my girlfriend to watch a band on a separate occasion. I decided to order one drink for myself as my girlfriend does not drink and the bar tender said "I'll need to see both ID's." I spoke on her behalf and told him she doesn't drink I'm just ordering for myself. The bar tender then refused to serve me because I wouldn't give him her ID. I told him I'd take my money somewhere else. Never going back!

Yelp
Went back under duress and found out that it is under new ownership. Sad.They fired my friend's favorite bartender. Not very clean. No roaches this time, but it was cool inside. Please do. Once again we went and no band was scheduled. Won't be back.

Yelp
Went back this past weekend after a few years of living too far to be able to come regularly like I used to. I was so happy to see this place is pretty much the same as all the years I've been coming here. Highly recommended for someone looking for a low key place with great food. I always get the tots and wiz and I have never been disappointed. Wish I could give it 6 stars.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Very cool spot for four to sit and watch the "people". Prices ok. Veggie burger is an avoid unless you really just want some bread. They should look into the impossible burger
google avatar

Sharon G.

Yelp
How is it not ILLEGAL to sell 'pints' of beer in a 12oz plastic cup???? YOU ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF!!! The lack of proper management is apparent from the way they short change the customer at every opportunity. $10 for a burger, and they served it on the cheapest paper plate possible. We were shocked. REALLY? 50 cent up charge for a 4oz container of salsa. Wouldn't have asked for it if I knew. Also, the waiter was stoned. Never again.

Michael C.

Yelp
A great place in a great town. An American treasure.Always outstanding music. Saw the Pete Beck band perform there and they were excellent. If you want really good food and a glass of $15 wine go to The Capital Grill. If you like good music and cold beer go to John and Peter's. Mike Casey Fishtown

Yelp
I forgot what it was like to be in a place that has a menu and still allows smoking. It was like one of those what's wrong with this picture games. We walked in and instantly I noticed ashtrays and I was like, "Oh, that's quaint. They haven't removed those yet." Then you sit down and all of a sudden smoke rolls over you and you look at your cell phone clock and see that the year is in fact 2008 and not 1981. Then you turn to your friend and have a discussion about how only Philadelphia has the smoking ban in effect. So there's smoking. If you can deal with it while you eat, keep on reading... The food (I had a sandwich) was surprisingly good and the sweet potato fries were good as well. The service was just fine, but that was because the place wasn't very full on a lazy Saturday afternoon. While at the bar, the bar tender and the server for the lower floor were smoking in between handling food. Doctors used to smoke in the operating room; I'm sure it doesn't hurt around food. The ceiling is very low and the lighting has that brown orange hue of dive bars from the 1980s that were coming off just being bars during the 1970s. I guess what really sets this place apart is the live music. Normally it supposed to be full and the acts that come through are really great. So, all in all, if you can tolerate smoke, this place has some tasty food, draft beer, full bar, and a pleasant atmosphere to be with a group of people.

Yelp
Gotta love J&P's: the EPITOME of dive bar. But as divey as it is, the talent that walks through John and Peter's is far from it. I've seen some amazing gigs there, from spontaneous acts that walk on stage for their Monday night open mic to pretty swinging bands over the weekend. Musicians like George Thorogood, Norah Jones, WEEN, Tiny Tim (lolz), have all called J&P's home at one point or another. Even talents such as Penn & Teller have left hand prints on John & Pete's heart. As for food, service, and prices -- John & Peter's is pretty standard. $5 cover if there is live entertainment, although open mic nights are free (donation bins make their rounds however), and a basic beer/drink is essentially $4. The servers/bartenders there feel like old friends and rest assured, they'll be asking you if you want another drink before you actually NEED another drink. Yep, just like old friends. I do suggest seating in John and Peter's outside area if you can. Inside is like a sauna filled with second-hand smoke and mind you, I am one of those polluters. Yet regardless of harmful inhalations, outside simply makes more sense: a) fresh air b) more room, and c) QUICKER DRINK ACCESS. The only downside is that you cannot see or hear the live entertainment. Damn you catch 22's!!
google avatar

Heather L M.

Yelp
John and Peter's is the classic dive bar - dark, small, strong drinks, cheap prices. No need to dress to impress. The side patio/bar is a great place to hang and people watch in the warmer months. I've only eaten here a couple of times, I'm usually here for the beverages. The only negative is the smoking.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
I love this place more than any place I've ever been to. The staff is made up of the nicest people and always treat us well. They remember us are always friendly and very attentive. Hard to find the quick service with drinks that can even be complicated you can tell everyone there loves their jobs. Amazing place will always be my go-to when in town. Love it! :)
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
One of the best dive bars I have ever been to! Located right next to the swankiest NYC wanna-be dance party, this 6-ft tall ceilinged hole in the wall has the friendliest and most helpful waiter ever, good prices on imported beers and the most willing to talk about any type of shit you want clientele. I didn't want to leave this place and I think it would be pretty easy to get laid here.

RW ..

Yelp
J&Ps just started doing breakfast today so I'm not gonna ding them on the stars. Just turn the heat down a little when you cook the over easy eggs and they won't burn so bad. Also you get about a quarter cup of corned beef hash if you order corned beef hash and eggs.
google avatar

Bryan K.

Yelp
The greatest bar known to man! I spent many a drunken night enjoying the lovely atmosphere here. The 6 foot ceilings help hold in the smokey must(it's in PA, so, yeah, you can still smoke inside). The blood, sweat, and tears of local and touring bands over the past 25 years line the walls, as well as their show poster. Live music 365 days a year, this place has given rise to such great acts from Ween to Johnny's Dance Band to Penn and Teller to Birdie Num Num and the Spirit Squad. So, let the Jameson drown and the Yeungling chase your blues away, and you'll be okay at John and Peter's.
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars when it doesn't deserve it for Big Sue and Mountain John. I cut my teeth at Juan y Pedro's and for me, it feels like home. I knew Big Jen Ran when she tended bar here - and saw many great Dead-COver bands and jam bands and all kinds of great musical acts here. A great, great, great place. Even better in the dead of winter when the tourists have all gone away.
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
Saw a rat in men's bathroom, also puke all over the seat. Not a good look by any means. Get it together.

Mike M.

Yelp
Place in banging, don't come in here expecting pretty bs. Great food and strong drinks. Will come back
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
There's nothing like a nice lunch outside when the sun is shining and the pleasant people are out enjoying the weather. Such was my experience at John & Peter's which, despite its dive-ish interior, has a nice outdoor seating area with a bar and music. I should point out that my review in no way includes the inside area, as I only went inside to use the bathroom. The outside had just opened two days earlier, so the beer taps were not yet connected, but there is an ample selection of bottled beers and spirits. The food is American fare with a decent variety of Boar's Head sandwiches, burgers, and other staples. I had the kobe burger with guacamole and it was delicious. The beef was cooked exactly they way I like (medium-rare), and the guacamole was as gloriously mediocre as I could have hoped. I also had a cup of chili that I wish had come before my burger, but was quite satisfying nonetheless. It's hard for any establishment to stand out along the crowded streets of New Hope, but this one does just fine. If easy American cuisine is what you're after, John & Peter's will not disappoint. P.S. They DO allow smoking in the outside section (don't know about the inside), which is a turn-off for many people.
google avatar

Brian E.

Yelp
Been going here every Monday for two years and it is - hands down - THE BEST OPEN MIC NIGHT EVER! I wouldn't call the food prices cheap, but they're definitely competitive. On "Recession Wednesdays," everything on the menu is 50% off which is great! The wait staff is friendly, the live music is always good and the vibe is laid back. They allow smoking which knocks it down a star, as I'm a non-smoker. Apart from that, I'll keep coming back until I'm gone.
google avatar

Brice R.

Yelp
This review concerns only the outside area. Went there on a sunny afternoon with a friend to have a beer in this very nice atmosphere (nice music playing, a terrace not overcrowded). We were pleasantly surprised by the food too, as the pulled pork sandwich was delicious. Not a very big selection of draft beers (although big enough for my friend and I to find something to our tastes), but a nice selection of bottled beers. Very nice service.

Yelp
Great dive bar with solid music. Definitely a favorite in New Hope with an outside area that adds a cool option to inside. Character central at this place.
