The Best Onion Burgers in Oklahoma City and El Reno - Eater

"One of the first things you see upon entering downtown is the nondescript building that houses Johnnie’s, which has been open there since 1946. The burgers here are a little thicker than the other onion burgers we tried and improbably juicy." - Amy McCarthy

Great onion smash burgers! Great onion rings and fresh cut fries! Everything was delicious and hit the spot. Everything was made to order and piping hot when brought to our table. Our waitress and patient and knowledgeable, she was excellent in her service. The cooks did a great job keeping up with orders. Definitely worth a stop...they have many other options than just burgers, give them a try!

I've been meaning to try Johnnie's, a Rt66 staple, for several years now. I finally had the chance to stop in and see for myself if it lives up to everything I've read and seen in Rt66 travel guide and YouTube videos. I'm happy to say that it isn't hype, it's just that good. Johnnie's has been open since 1946, and is my favorite kind of restaurant. It has a great short order menu, and the service was outstanding. The employees were friendly, and even though there was a good lunch crowd, they were also very attentive. I ordered an original Oklahoma Onion Burger with cheese, a Coney with chili and slaw, a half order of shoe string fries, and a slice of Coconut cream pie. The burger was just the right blend of bitter and sweet from the grilled onion. The fries were perfect and hand cut. The coney was an actual red Coney (if you know, you know) and the chili and slaw were both house made. The pie is also house made and they have a very large desert menu. The other thing I cant emphasize enough is the value. I could only eat about half of each of my items thanks to generous portions. My entire meal cost less than a single hamburger at a trendy 'burger joint'. If you are a fan of history and want to experience a true old fashioned meal, try Johnnie's!

Google
So we were in El Reno for a soccer tournament and needed lunch so we stopped by Johnnie's Hamburgers and Coneys. My son and I had a double meat onion burger. My daughter and other son had a crispy chicken wrap. We had a half order of fries and onion rings to share. The burger was very greasy and the onions weren't cooked quite enough for my liking (still a little too firm) and it lacked seasoning. All the condiments and toppings were on the side so I guess the expectation was I put my own salt on my meat. Their fries looked hand cut and were shoestring style, which isn't my favorite, but they were good quality. Onion rings were standard issue frozen and just ok. Their ranch was really nice though! Service was fast and friendly. There's too many delicious (and cheaper) burgers out there for this to ever make a top 10 list for me but it filled our bellies which was the main point I reckon.

My husband had lived in OK over 20 years and never heard of the famous onion burger and then we read about El Reno being the place to get the best of the best. We drove up from Dallas to try it out. Since my husband was set on doing the onion burger crawl the only food purchased was the onion burger no frills, bun, patty and lots of onions! To see what the hoopla was all about we stopped at Johnnie's first😅 it was amazing! Totally worth it! The grilled onions brought a lot to the party! 🎉 the burger was on the smaller side but since we were doing the crawl it was the perfect size! Didn't add ketchup or mustard at first. Didn't need it. Definitely recommend stopping here. The staff was super friendly.

Google
Phenomenally friendly staff and food. I had breakfast and went back for lunch. Just a simple sausage egg and cheese biscuit rivaled any I've had. Went back for an onion burger that turned out to be the best I've had. Great atmosphere. Enjoyed sitting at the counter and watching the impressive cooks. Do not know how they keep up, but it's fun to watch.

Google
What a cute diner. I was hankering for a chili dog and found myself here. I got tots, a drink, and a chili cheese dog with the relish. It was tasty! Never had the relish before, so that's why I got it, for the whole effect. It was good but there was a lot of it, probably ask for it on the side next time. I would return for sure.

Google
Legendary! Had a chili cheese dog and it was the hop and bop between a sliced bun. Dad got the double cheeseburger and the taste was unmatched. Kids chicken was also great too. Good family oriented restaurant and a relic.

All around great food. The slaw on the conet was spectacular! And the onion burger was tasty and perfect size

Yelp
I am an El Reno native. I grew up on Onion Fried. That's what we call them. Onion Fried. With or without. I can tell if the burger is going to be good or not from the first tap of the spatula. One of the Original Godfather's Otis Bruce ran this joint. It started out at a tiny hallway and grew to what it is today. You can still sit at the counter. But you can also sit at a booth or a table. Every day you will see a group of locals meeting there for breakfast or lunch. It's where the locals eat. The breakfast is a classic diner menu. Eggs cooked on a flat grill next to bacon. Hash-browns too. Quick. And hot. And endless refills of Sprite. They have one of those extra carbonated soda fountains. Feel the burn. You'll want an Onion Fried with Cheese. A basket of fries, well done. And a double coney with extra mustard slaw. Theirs is perfect. The smoky hot dog. The soft steamed bun. The simple brick chili. And the house-made mustard slaw is heaven on a fork. Hidden gems: The breakfast burritos. Lunch Wraps. Huge. And they have dinner choices... Hamburger steaks cooked on the same seasoned flat grill as breakfast. All the sausage seasoning! The fried onion seasoning! And here is the set apart from the other choices. The service is superior. You'll get told hello at least twice if not 5 or 6. The locals nod to one another. We all talk to people in Johnnies. That's just one reason to go. To be seen. The owners are committed and on site and they manage and work the restaurant. It is a true locally owned, locally run and locally managed family place. It is clean. There is clean and there is clean. They are clean. You will not get anything but great service. And you'll get checked on. And checked in again. Have a slice of pie. The choices are listed on the board daily. And pay at the counter. Tip your server. And leave already planning your return. You want to know which one the locals go to... This one.

Yelp
The service was good, the place was well kept, and the food came out fast. The coney's have a red dye of some sort around it, I'm not sure what that is, never seen anything like it, the slaw on the coney was good, the burger I didn't really care for, the salad was ok, the chicken on the salad is a chicken patty cut up.
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Johnnie's as what I consider the big 3 in El Reno burger-wise. Also some die hard local left such a funnily passionate review on yelp I had to try what they were talking about. I'm glad there was plenty of space I just had some odd service at the bar. Burger was absolutely stacked with onions loved that.

Yelp
This charming small town diner always hits the spot. If you're ever in downtown El Reno , you'll definitely smell the onion burgers in the air. You can't go wrong with a burger, coney, fries, and a shake.
google avatar

Rory K.

Yelp
The orders were messed up twice unfortunately - not sure if t was the server or the kitchen. The burgers were good but not at all great. The price for two of us was rather high.
google avatar

Bryan J.

Yelp
This place was really good. I haven't been in there in years and I was very happy how good the food was and service!
google avatar

Wess B.

Yelp
Overall the onion burger and fries was good. Had very good flavor and the fries was fresh and seasoned well. My only thing is they use the 4" bun. I prefer the larger 5" bun and for the price everything has gone to. There prices are a little higher than chain hamburger joint but will try them again. Staff was not too friendly so that's the reason for 4 stars.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
I've tried all three onion burger restaurants in El Reno now and I like Johnnie's best. Robert's and Sid's do not season their meat, but Johnnie's does. The fries were over done and that's why I gave them a 4 rating. The inside is big and bright and clean. I'll be back to this place again!

Christina T.

Yelp
Misleading menu. Who charges extra for lettuce and tomatoes? Tucker's is for sure on top.

Alisha K.

Yelp
My chicken fried burger was nasty. It was seriously a warmed up nasty premade frozen patty. I expected down home cooking and was sadly let down
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food and employees. The hotdog with chili and slaw was a cool surprise. I have never eaten here so me and wife split everything we got. The onion rings on a tree was a nice touch and double burger was really tasty. I will stop back by next time I am in town.

Juan O.

Yelp
The burger bun was non-existent after a couple of bites. I was charged 27 for two burgers and nothing else... go to Sid's it's better and you'll save money!

Owen A.

Yelp
Better than Sid's but sadly not as good as Roberts. Cool place friendly folks 4/5 onion burger.
google avatar

Hollie H.

Yelp
Went in and right away thought it was a cute little burger joint. Friendly service, and you can watch the food being made behind the bar. Burgers are TO DIE FOR! Coneys are very basic and could be better but honestly we are definitely going back for those burgers! Plus upon purchase of a large drink you get a little plastic cup to keep! Stop in when you have a chance!

Yelp
REVIEW #500 (Woo hoo!). They serve a good onion burger at this old-school greasy spoon -- not amazing, just good. IMO the #2 onion burger of the El Reno three. First and most noticeable about it, it was just the right amount of juicy. But beyond that, the beefy flavor underwhelmed and needed more seasoning. And for a double cheeseburger it lacked any real cheesiness, or much cheese flavor at all for that matter. But onions were great. While not perfect, still a solid onion cheeseburger. I also tried their coney dog -- slaw with lots of flavor, extra tangy and sweet. Slaw was a little more dominant to flavor than their hot dog chili. And it is the messiest coney of the Big 3. It needed the included fork, which was useless since dog was simply wrapped in paper. A box or at least aluminum foil would work better. My hubby ranked it #1 in town, but I say #2 to the more balanced and slightly less messy competitor up the road. Lastly, onion rings here are nothing special, overcooked some, and tasted freezer burned. Fresh cut fries are the better option, the floppy old-fashioned kind I have a nostalgic thing for. So while it's not much to look at from the outside and the parking lot is a bit of an eyesore, the food and service shine. In fact, they hire the friendliest, most helpful workers in town, and I love that most about this place. Bonus: they have a drive thru!
google avatar

Jb A.

Yelp
Its good, but watch your ticket. Usually they are so busy and whoever is waiting and writing your ticket may end up double charging you. I have ended up paying for 3 milk shakes and more sides than I ordered on occasion. Usually you can ask how did you get to that number, but sometimes you just walk out and realize you paid 40 bucks for a 25 dollar meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, fast food! Grabbed a onion burger and rings. It was absolutely amazing, and I would recommend them to everyone.
google avatar

Dalton R.

Yelp
Been eating here for 30 years. Love it. Burgers and coneys are SLAWsome!! Personal favorite of the big three onion burgers on el Reno.

Richard H.

Yelp
Great burger joint, good service. The place is always packed and busy. But they still manage to have your food out in a timely manner
google avatar

Gary G.

Yelp
So as I look for places to take my lunch during the work I find Johnnie's. I am always up for a great burger the only thing better is an amazing onion burger which Johnnie's has one. I stopped in one day for lunch order a onion burger with onion rings. I was impressed with the burger and the onion rings were good as well. See it kinda reminded me of my grandmothers burgers were the juices run all over your hands and down to your elbows. The staff was Pleasant and friendly and I can't wait to get back for another burger.
google avatar

Scot F.

Yelp
Johnny's is a nostalgic mainstay. We like to go there once or twice a year just for the unique taste. Nobody does a better onion burger or coney, in my opinion. The only turn off is the prices. They are noticeably higher priced than comparative burger places, albeit their products have more of that homemade feel. We would probably frequent them more often if their prices were more in line with other like establishments.

Louise M.

Yelp
This place serves the best burgers in town! Plus the staff are friendly than other 'onion burger' joints in town. The restaurant is spacious and spotlessly clean.

Carol B.

Yelp
Good burgers and fries and like that you now pay when you order. Frankfurter burger is good also. Limited menu.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
I use to come here with my grandma when I was younger. They have amazing coney dogs as well as onion burgers. It's all made right in front of you and smells oh so good. Nothing beats splitting an onion burger, coney, & fries with grandma at Johnnies.
google avatar

Kris A.

Yelp
This place has quickly become one of my favorite burger joints. Awesome onion burgers, honestly better than the other El Reno burger joint. I've tried several other items on the menu and can't complain about anything, except it's too much food. I'll keep coming.
google avatar

Dana T.

Yelp
Love the fried onion burgers and coneys with chili and slaw! They are really tasty!! Get an order of fries or onion rings, too! The place is reminiscent of a 50s diner, in its decor. Many folks, around these parts, have fond memories of their families eating here. On your next trip heading west of OKC, pop in for some frieds and coneys. Start making some memories of your own!
google avatar

Thomas T.

Yelp
Don't know if it was intentional or not. They are missing something that the old Johnnies had,....., taste . To me they aren't the same.
google avatar

Tj L.

Yelp
First time eatiing here that I can remember.. it was really good I've always been a burger guy and it was a great burger my waitress was super friendly not to mention really cute. Ryan was super cool he made sure everything tasted great and was cooked to exceed standard

Chris T.

Yelp
Every time I visit family in Rl Reno, I go to Johnnie's. Decade after decade I've never been able to get enough fried onion burger. Some say Robert's other say Sid's but for my money, it's got to be Johnnie's!
google avatar

Carson S.

Yelp
Came here while in town for work and some co-workers trekked us over here to get the infamous slaw dog and onion burger. This place is a hole in the wall greasy spoon kinda diner type atmosphere. Table service and is nothing fancy and the prices are very affordable which makes this place great. When I came there was fly paper strewn across the ceiling which was kinda off putting however looks like has since been updated. The slaw dog is a unique thing to the area which can be a strange thing to an outsider like myself. The slaw was almost neon yellow and the hotdogs and hotdogs were bright pink on the inside. Most people love em but it wasn't for me. The onion burger was a pretty tasty delight. Big to El Reno area so definitely had to try it. It was pretty good when you're feeling like something greasy. I came and I conquered.

Yelp
I -- quite literally -- grew up eating in this joint. (My family on both of Daddy's sides homesteaded in Canadian County.) Will you find health food here? HELL no. (Don't go in expecting organically sourced bruschettas, nor wilted arugula with capers. THIS IS AN OLD SCHOOL, GREASY ONION BURGER PLACE, PEOPLE.) Don't go in expecting tasteful decor and romantic ambience. (IT'S A BURGER JOINT, PAL.) Very basic, well lighted, usually fairly clean venue in downtown El Reno. Big, greasy, floppy, hand-cut fries. INSANELY delicious onion burgers and conies. Pop an extra aspirin (for your heart) prior to your trip out to shabby, sad little El Reno. (You're going out to nosh, not admire the scenery and revel in the posh neighborhoods that simply aren't there.) Take a little extra fiber the morning before you go, and drink extra water. Onion burgers and conies may not be good for you, and El Reno may be a long way to go for a meal, granted. That said, your taste buds will thank me later. This is the kind of place you go when you stop and realize that a) life is short, and that b) it's OK to treat yourself now and again.

Dave K.

Yelp
This was my first visit, and also first ever "Fried Onion Burger"! I was with a small group of "Out Of Towner's"! We showed up unannounced (In A Bus), and kinda surprised the owner and staff. They handled the sudden rush well. Was very surprised to see actual ground beef thrown up on the grill. Not pre made patties, but actual gobs of meat! That were then smashed with onions, and grilled to perfection. This might possibly be the best burger I have ever had! Been eating burgers now for 46 years. And I have had them coast to coast. This even surpassed In N Out in my rankings, which is near the top. The burger was hot, juicy, with gooey melted cheese, and was very very delicious! The onion rings were also very good. Had that homemade feel to it! We all know most rings, fries, and especially Tots are pre made at a factory. Others in my party raved about the Corn Dogs and shakes! I can not wait for my next trip to El Reno! Just to have another Onion Burger. Here at Johnny's!
google avatar

Phoebe S.

Yelp
There are several onion fried burger places in El Reno. All within a few blocks. I don't come to Johnnies I actually have not been here in over 8 years. but our State Farm here in town gives us a free onion burger on our birthday so my hubby wanted to go through the drive thru to pick up lunch/ free burger, we had a lot to do... They need to figure out a different way to give coneys "chili dogs with slaw" they been wrapping them in this paper forever fine but my coney was sooo runny my slaw and chili was not on my hotdog it was all over the place but on the hotdog it was all over the sides of the bun and more on the paper ,omg I was soo mad, $3.90 plus tax.... put the coneys in small to go boxes and give a fork! Their chili and slaw was just to runny that day for me, so probably won't be back. Try Sids, or Roberts down the street, much better.
google avatar

Bernadette H.

Yelp
Originally planned to go to Sid's after seeing it on the Travel Channel, but they are closed on Sundays. We went 2 blocks over to Johnnie's. same kind of fare. Half size order of fries or tater tots plenty enough. I'm stuffed!
google avatar

Doug J.

Yelp
Jumped off the freeway for a quick lunch stop. Johnnies is a typical burger diner with a breakfast menu. Everything was pretty good but nothing really stood out. Keep in mind if you're in a long vehicle or with a trailer that parking is a bit challenging. We managed to go around the block and found curb parking in front of a church.
google avatar

Alien G.

Yelp
Delicious burgers, friendly staff and helpful. I will be coming back. I highly recommend coming here if you want a nice juicy burger
google avatar

Neil G.

Yelp
Onion cheeseburger was great, as were the tater tots, but they charged me slightly more for something called a "base payment" and for paying with credit card. If I had known I would have used cash but the waitress didn't mention an extra charge. That left a bad taste but it's an historic place.
google avatar

Enola D.

Yelp
The onion burgers and fries are good. It is what it is... Not health food buy yummy if you put lots of mustard on the burger.
google avatar

Anne Marie J.

Yelp
To say my FIL is a regular is an understatement. He knows we are burger dive kinda people and said this was a premier dive. Yes, in respects to location, building, decor, and the fact that the owner paid cash out of his wallet to the guy delivering meat. While it fulfilled at the elements of a great burger joint, it fell short a bit. The patties were thin and lacking flavor...the onions did their job damn it...meat do yours! A bit of pepper would have gone a long way. At least the bun was super fresh and sopped up that yummy grease. The sides were good, too. I imagine we will go back when we visit family again. There's a difference between a greasy spoon burger and a plain nasty greasy burger. Luckily, this place is not the latter.
google avatar

Tay C.

Yelp
I just drove 45 minutes out here from Oklahoma City just to be told service animals aren't allowed. I'm extremely disappointed and inconvenienced and will never be back, unfortunately. I will also be reporting this to ADA as well.

Clyde C.

Yelp
The food is good but $15.00 and $2.00 tip for 2 hot dog's with chili and slaw, 1/2 fry, and drink is ridiculous. You can get a steak dinner for that. I will say the food is good though. But I prolly won't be back.
google avatar

Jw T.

Yelp
The food was good, loved the onion burger. My waitress didn't seem to want to be there. She was rushed to get our order and drop off our food. There was a really nice gentleman working who came by and visited. Made our experience even better. The onion burger and loaded dog were both really good. The visit with the guy working was even better. We were the only ones in as it was about 5pm on a monday. It looked really nice and was a quiet place to get a good onion burger. Thank you.

Amanda F.

Yelp
The onion rings are very well made and tasty. The burger was delicious, done just right.

Rose Mary C.

Yelp
Johnnie's is our go to spot when we come to Oklahoma! The fried onion burger is just delicious, and we love their fries! My husband always orders a coney as well. He loves their slaw. The waitresses are always super friendly. Best place around for the fried onion burger/coney experience!
google avatar

Carol D.

Yelp
You will find good food at this greasy spoon, but if you need gluten free, or other healthy food, don't darken these doors. If you want an old, delicious burger with greasy fries, enter this restaurant.

Linda K.

Yelp
This is twice we have tried the restaurant and I have not been impressed. Also you need to make sure your drink last you through the meal as you only get one refill and after that you get charged .25 for each refill. If I'm going to pay over $2.00 for a drink I expect to get as many as I want. Personally Sid's has the best onion fried burgers plus all the drinks you want without paying extra.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Got call out to a gig El Reno Stop by Johnnie's Grijj to grab a #FriedOnionBurgers and Pickelo's But they still can not beat Robert's Grill down #Route66 2 blocks to the West

Kyle E.

Yelp
Not a bad burger seems a bit over cooked and a little dry for my buds. Add a lot of salt and mayo and it's better! I liked the chili dogs better but they cost as much as the burger didn't feel it was worth 4 bucks! Not a bad overall quick gotta eat something quick though always get food quick!
google avatar

Chancely S.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to stop for lunch and stumbled across this place and let me tell you the burgers here are like mana from God. Do you self a favor and stop in. Pro-tip: always get a cookie for desert. Cheers!

Yelp
I walked in to Johnnie's just at noon and saddled up to the bar. I'm glad I came when I did because shortly after it got packed, and I mean packed. I thought it was a bit empty when I walked in but my fears were eased quickly. The phone was ringing off the hook and the drive thru was constantly going too. You can tell the locals really love this place. Of course I ordered their famous Fried Onion Burger. I got mine with cheese, tomato and lettuce ($.40 extra), with 1/2 onion rings 1/2 french fries and chili on the side. The burger was great. It wasn't the best I'd ever had but it was something a little different than usual. I enjoyed watching them grill the onions right on the griddle in front of me, and smash them into the patty. The grilled (fried) onions give the burger a nice distinct flavor. The only difference next time I'd make is to get it a double, as it was not quite enough meat for me, and skip the onion rings & fries. They were okay but fried a bit much. The fries were pretty thin and real crispy. The onion rings were super crispy and super salty. The chili, however, was really good. Maybe I should have made it a chili burger. The staff was super friendly and a very funny mix of all demographics, from the old diner waitress to the teenage fast food employee, it was fun to see them all interacting so well. The atmosphere was great and the patrons were all having a great time. I love that they had SportsCenter on the TVs. If you'd headed down I-40 make sure you stop here. I have a more in-depth review and pictures on my personal blog.
