Johnny Black's was jamming when I walked in. Almost every table was filled. If this were a weekend, it wouldn't be worth noting, but this was a Tuesday at 5 PM. I typically wouldn't get my butt off the couch to go out to eat on a Tuesday, but now I am rethinking that position. The locals obviously know something that I just learned today.
The look and feel is what you would want from a proper pub. Seating is mostly set up for large groups, or for strangers to sit at the same table. This is the way it's done in Britain, and it's a cool thing to see here. Now that the world is opening up, why not interact with it?
The beer selection is extensive and reasonably priced. Drinks showed up quickly. This is a moderately sized place, but the bar is not far from any table.
And, what about the food? I'm glad you asked. This is what attracted me here today. Just about everything from steak to sandwiches and entrées are available here. There are a staggering number of options if you like tacos. The baked fish tacos were light and delicious, and I loved that they provided a little lime wedge for each taco. There is also a side of super crispy tortilla chips included with the tacos. I could probably eat a whole plate of these at one sitting.
Their take on fried brussels sprouts is refreshing: they stir in hazelnuts and top them with blue cheese crumbles. My wife is not a fan of blue cheese, so we had them on the side. Unlike the sprouts at some places, they were not greasy at all. There was just enough crispiness without losing the awesomeness of the sprout.
Like I said at the start, I don't normally eat out on a Tuesday. But, the next time I do, I'm probably coming back here.
