A Chile Road Trip on the I-25 from Las Cruces to Denver | Eater

"A spot that serves a green chile Philly cheesesteak which the author dunked into a sturdy cup of red to create a New Mexican-style French dip—an indulgent mash-up of two chile worlds." - Gustavo Arellano

The decorations were awesome! The service was horrible. Our waitresses came to our table 3x. First to take our order 2nd to bring our food and if I had not had my hand raised like to ask a question she would have never came back the 3rd time with the wrong refill. We got the chicken fried steak plate our steak was beyond burnt 😩 I wanted to send it it back but the husband said no. We also got the combination Mexican plate only thing that was good was the beans. You can definitely tell nothing is homemade everything comes from a bag pre-made which there is nothing wrong with that i was just hoping for homemade. The place was very busy and full of people. Women's bathrooms were clean and fully stocked i definitely liked that. We also bought cookies they look homemade so hopefully they are good. Overall terrible time but it was an experience. Hope you have a better time.

Stopped to charge our car & I wanted to try this place instead of going to McDonalds. Sat down, girl got our drinks & nobody came back after that. We sat for about 20 minutes & nothing, nobody came to ask if we’d been helped. Just looked at us. I saw about 4 waitresses & wasn’t full of people. People were coming in & getting their orders taken. Just paid for the drinks we didn’t even drink & walked out.

Google
Id give this place a 7.5/10 The food was delicious. The cheeseburger and chicken sandwich I shared with my sister were definitely yummy and highly recommend. They came out pretty quickly too. Only bad part Id say would be the customer service. Our waitress was super nice and knew the menu well and gave good recommendations, others who are not assigned the table weren't willing to help a whole lot. They were quite dismissive and not so friendly.

Google
So I had a hamburger and fries regular hamburger and it was very good. The hamburger I enjoyed no complaints. The fries were extra crispy at first I wasn’t too sure but I do add ketchup to my fries and they soaked up the fries really well and I had to say I would definitely go back and get the same thing. I also had a lemon meringue pie, which was definitely the cherry on top. It was extremely tasty not too sweet had a little bit of tank for the lemon and it tasted like a lemon nothing artificial overall I was very happy with everything that I ate.

Just had breakfast at Johnny B’s. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. For the first time in my life I couldn’t eat what I ordered. The gravy had no sausage in it and was very bland. The waitress was very cordial and I ordered egg, hash browns and toast. This meal was out to me quickly and tasted great. I was not charged for the biscuits and gravy. Thank you for the great service!!

Google
This a great place. It's convenient to the interstate and has great food and great service. They have great rubins and milkshakes. It had a hometown atmosphere that is delightful. An elderly couple struck up a conversation as soon as we sat down.

Johnny B’s in Truth or Consequences, NM, is a must-visit if you're in town. We stopped in for lunch and were blown away by the quality and flavor of the food. The Reuben sandwich was everything you want in a classic—thick slices of corned beef, perfectly melted Swiss cheese, and tangy sauerkraut all piled high on rye bread that had just the right amount of crisp. It was hearty and satisfying, exactly what you hope for when ordering a Reuben. The green chile cheeseburger, though, might have stolen the show. The burger was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful, and the green chile added that signature New Mexico kick that makes you want to come back for more. The combination of the smoky, slightly spicy chile with the melted cheese and fresh toppings was simply outstanding. To top it all off, we had a glass of their lemonade, which was incredibly refreshing—just the right balance of sweet and tart. It was the perfect complement to the meal. The casual, friendly vibe at Johnny B’s makes you feel right at home, and the food is nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this place should definitely be on your list.

We've started coming here a week ago and been back every day! The food is really good, prices are very reasonable, and the service is first class. Doesn't matter if it's breakfast or dinner, plenty of choices. Very nice small town American restaurant easy access from I-25. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Love eating breakfast or lunch here. The staff is friendly and fast. There are always lots of people eating. This is a great place to go with friends and have a nice meal. It's casual and family friendly. They also have an ice cream counter. The food is good. Simple dishes for good eating.

Yelp
Just my new favorite place in T or c for lunch. I've yet to try breakfast here but I hear it's great! Service is always good in here, sometimes better than other times but always good. I've been here about 10X now and I haven't had a bad experience yet. I need to try some other things on the menu. I'll be back in two weeks haha. Two thumbs up from me today!

Yelp
From right when I stepped in, I knew this was going to be good. You could tell there were lots of locals there, and the staff were super friendly. I ordered a Diet Coke which was brought quickly and looked over the menu. The first thing I noticed was the low prices. The room has sports memorabilia, and open table arrangements. The menu had traditional items and some New Mexico specialties. I chose beef and green chili enchiladas with rice and beans. The chips and salsa that came out while I waited were exceptional. The salsa was thick and spicy. The entree came out and you could tell the ingredients were fresh. It was a very large portion. As I dug into the stacked enchilada, I noticed the fresh white onions, flavorful green chili sauce and just the right amount of cheese and tortillas. The waitstaff was superb and so friendly. I hope you get a chance to check this place out. I know I'll be back, hopefully soon!

Yelp
We were so hungry when we got in that when we got our food we forgot to take a picture. Lol. Dust storms in NM are the real deal! Anyway. We were so happy to find this little gem while traveling thru! I had the fish plate and my hubby got a club! I had to tell the waitress that I was so happy I didn't have to remove the breading from the fish! It was crisp and tasty! Be prepared to wait a little ... bc it was a bit of a wait. But happy to get it all when we did. It's pretty rustic inside. Baseball themed and obviously an older building. But looking at all the families and people coming in and out - they all didn't seem to mind. ANNNDD. If we weren't watching some of what we need to eat we would have got the ice cream!!! Wow some of the dishes brought out of ice cream looked so good!!

Yelp
Great place for a meal. We had the Philly chile steak sandwich and it was superb! Fries were tasty also. Great service, will return!

Yelp
Amazing food and great service! Had no complaints. Lots of variety when it comes to food AND dessert!

Yelp
Staying in town for a couple nights and decided to try this place for lunch. Cute busy diner where everyone seems to know everyone. Food tasted great, good sized portions, and prices seem right. Beware of the 3% credit card surcharge- pay with cash or debit card. Online menu items were accurate but they definitely need to update the prices as it was a few dollars difference last update.

Yelp
Delicious tuna sandwich and really nice staff. If I ever find myself back in the area I will come back to try the enchiladas:)

Yelp
My daughters were visiting from ABQ over the Labor Day Holiday. We went to Johnny B's for a late breakfast. The server may have forgotten about us after the Server took our order. We all ordered egg dishes. After 30 minutes of waiting, I wanted to leave, but my daughters wanted to wait. We drank our coffee. The Server then came over and asked us what we ordered??? Now it's been 40 minutes. When she brought our order, it clearly had been sitting under the heat lamp. It was hot and we thought it to be safe instead of reorder- ing. My youngest daughter got very sick throwing up and Diarrhea, I had Diarrhea and felt very sick, my oldest daughter was ok. I recently moved here. I won't be going back to Johnny B's. I'll bring my guests and family elsewhere.

Yelp

Yelp
I am ashamed to say this was my first visit. But, let me say, if you are looking for a solid and delicious breakfast, this is the place. They open at 7 (you know - breakfast time). They let me sub pinto beans for eggs (not always an egg fan), smothered means lots of chile (some places are very skimpy with smothered) and my coffee was always full. The waitress (I failed to get her name - long dark hair in a braid) was awesome. She was friendly, efficient and didn't miss a beat. I am excited to have a new breakfast place to frequent.
google avatar

Loryn G.

Yelp
Such a great family owned business! Jordan G. Was amazing. Great service and great menu with lots of options. We were heading back to las cruces and didn't want to do any fast food so found this place on yelp and it was easy to get to- right off the highway. Will definitely be back on the next road trip!

Machel C.

Yelp
Last day camping in the area with friends so decided to let someone else cook so we didn't have a mess to clean up. Both wives had the green chile patty melt and both husbands had the green chile Philly cheesesteak. FANTASTIC choices!! Highly recommend both items!

Mary S.

Yelp
Very good services, good food. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich it was delicious with sweet potato fries yum. The place was really nice. Highly recommend it

Yelp
Why bother with the chain "diner" across the street when Johnny B's is right there? We stopped for lunch on our way out of town and were really pleased with our meal. My husband had the Johnny Burger - beef patty, bacon, ham, green chile, and cheese on a brioche bun. It was really good, but I was in the mood for a Philly cheesesteak. I've never been to Philadelphia for the OG sandwich, but Johnny B's version was very tasty. The sweet potato fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned as well. We didn't have room for dessert, so we'll have to save some room the next time we're in town.

Yelp
We came here because it was right across the street from the hotel we were staying at and we wanted to support a local business. We got there and were surprised at the size of the restaurant - it's pretty huge. It was a Thursday morning but there were at least 5-10 tables filled. The hostess and our server were friendly, even though it took a few minutes for the server to get to our table. We ordered our food, which was the smothered hash browns with red chili, which was very similar to the huevos rancheros but with hash browns. We also got the strawberry-topped waffles with a side of eggs and hash browns. The hash browns were crispy, the eggs cooked as we asked them to, and the service was efficient. Lastly, We bought a large chocolate chip cookie and it was the best cookie we've had in a while - so much chocolate and perfectly soft and crispy. All of this food came out in less than 5 minutes and the atmosphere felt very inviting with inspiring quotes and some American actors on the wall. I'm glad we stopped here - we would definitely return! Overall, we felt like this place has

Yelp
This was a good place in a very small town, and they did pretty well when I talked about gluten-free options. I got a few tacos with corn tortillas and it was pretty good and very reasonably priced. The place was packed too.
google avatar

Amie R.

Yelp
I'm from Albuquerque and looking for a good breakfast in my stay here. Loved the omelet and French toast. But what made the experience even better was our waitress Blanca. Really good customer service
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
I'm visiting town from Texas and popped in for breakfast. Wasn't really a win. The biscuit was weird and just so so and the gravy was packaged. It was not real gravy as in homemade. Definitely politically conservative leaning place but I guess you can expect that in this part of New Mexico. Not a recommend. Would go to a different diner for basic fare.
google avatar

Peg D.

Yelp
Food was good & reasonable, but service was definitely lacking. We were sitting for a long time while those around us got coffee & menus. Seemed like a lot of locals, but gee. Never got the ketchup I requested either so I just left my hashbrowns and no one seemed to notice. Tried the lil Pie Shop downtown & it was much friendlier.
google avatar

Yelp
TERRIBLE DINING EXPERIENCE. My family and I came Friday night to have a nice dinner but instead WE WERE SERVED A HUGE PLATE OF RACISM. We were SAT IN THE BACK OF THE RESTAURANT as if SEGREGATION was still a thing (pic-1) Now mind you there were PLENTY of CLEAN AND EMPTY TABLES IN THE FRONT that could fit the 3 of us (pic-2) seems to me we were placed there since we were latinos. While sitting in the back I notice some NON- LATINOS come in and OUR WAITRESS SAT THEM IN THE FRONT, then moments later ANOTHER LATINO FAMILY comes and SHE SAT THEM IN THE BACK SECTION. I question the waitress as to why we were placed in the back and she replies "the tables in the front were not clean", I politely responded that the tables were clean, there was nothing on the tables and her next response was " I wanted to wait on you girls, that's why I placed you there". If you support behavior like this, go ahead and spend your hard earned money there but if you're against racism and bigotry, go to another restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
We always have great food and a great experience at Johnny B's. Everything we have ever ordered there is amazing and the service is always superb.

Kimberly R.

Yelp
You should seerve breakfast all day you close at 2....and your a diner!!!...you get here at 10:50 wait 10 minutes to get seated you should honor the fact that we wanted breakfast!!! Rude place......

Yelp
This place is AWESOME! Highly recommend. Ate here last night and tonight. The food is wonderful and the service is phenomenal! It's casually warm and friendly. We had chicken fried steak dinner and roast beef sandwich (night 1)- Awesomeness Enchiladas and tacos (night 2) Friggin delicious! Everything was so good! A gem of T or C!

Yelp
Johnny B's is a "Honey, stop the car!" kind of place! It was our second stop while looking for breakfast in Truth or Consequences driving from Las Cruces to Sante Fe. We were not disappointed by any means. I highly recommend stopping here if you're passing through on the interstate. 5 service. The whole staff takes care of all the guests. Every employee was friendly, nice, and helping everyone. They all seemed to enjoy each other and the guests whether you were a local or a tourist. 5 food. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with "Christmas" mix (red and green Chile sauce). It was delicious and I couldn't finish my plate. My BF ordered the corned beef and hash and ate every bite of his plate! Check it out!
google avatar

Francesca D.

Yelp
Ok, this review is overdue but necessary. We were on a road trip over Christmas and stopped here along the way, tired and hungry. Everyone was lovely, have us great suggestions, and that house burger was probably the best burger I've ever had. Phenomenal food and fantastic service. We will definitely go back when we're in that area again. Kinda craving it right now.

Gary D.

Yelp
The food was very good. I was impressed by the staff. I've eaten there quite a few times. I like to have lunch.

Yelp
In this quiet little Podunk town populated by shiny happy [old] people, there exists a quaint and homely little place called Johnny B's. So, what exactly does Johnny B's serve? Well, pretty much all the basics. But today I arrived for a simple American lunch. This is what commenced. The Philly: I'm gonna be honest. I have no issues with this sandwich whatsoever. While it's not a perfect Philly cheesesteak by any means, it satisfies in all the areas that count most. Flavor? Delightful. Portion size? Just about right. I'd give this one an 8 out of 10. The delivery time was spot on, considering I was with a party of 11. I'll tell ya...that waitress was on her A-game today. And I'm sure she appreciated the multiple tips from all of us. The fries were good, too. Unsalted however...so consider that small caveat when eating here. Nothing a little salt couldn't fix, which is more than I can say for the clam chowder. Now, the clam chowder was the soup of the day and I'm not sure if it's an every Friday thing. But it's pretty much the only thing that let me down throughout this quaint, homely lunch. I'm from New England and you all probably know by now how strictly I rate clam chowder. So, let me carefully explain why this version failed to impress. Clam chowder: watery and bland. Not only did I have to pour in about a quarter of the salt shaker into the thing to make it taste like anything; there was hardly any clams and potatoes in there. By the time I finished what little there was, the cup was still half full of clam and potato-less broth. I didn't finish it due to the lack of seasoning. If it wasn't for the crackers, it really would have tasted of nothing. 2 out of 10 for me. At least I didn't have to pay for the damn thing. But fortunately, the aforementioned faux pas didn't ruin lunch by any means. As stated, the service was on point and the cheesesteak was delicious. I highly recommend it if you're a cheesesteak fan like me. I only wish this place wasn't 2 hours away from where I live. I'd love to try the breakfast someday. Johnny B's gets 4 savory cheesesteaks served by a friendly server with pep in her step out of 5.

Susan G.

Yelp
There were nine of us and everyone thought their meal was delicious. Service was great. Ambiance was pleasant. Easy on and off access to freeway.

Karen S.

Yelp
Really not good. I had a green chile burger and it was dry. My friend had the French dip sandwich which she said was flavorless. I would not return.
google avatar

Aubrie B.

Yelp
Best place in town and nearby towns! Food was good, service was great! Good variety of choices.

Marglyph B.

Yelp
We looked at the reviews and saw it rated #2 in the area. The French dip beef was awful and not flavorful. My friend had a green chili burger that was way too spicy and she's had lots of green chili. But the service was prompt.
google avatar

Ralph W.

Yelp
This place was wonderful: the quality of food, the large portions, and the excellent service. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
You are limited to options in during the week in T or C, but were happy this was open. This is a no frills American diner with a hometown feel. The service was prompt and friendly. The kind of place where everyone knows your name and order, if you are a local. The food was nothing spectacular, but it was good. The biscuits are the size of your head, coffee refilled often and eggs were cooked perfectly. Stop in if you are hungry, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Jodi T.

Yelp
Good solid restaurant in T or C for breakfast. Would go back again, service good on a busy weekend

Matthew G.

Yelp
Johnny B's has to be one of the best restaurants I've been to and there's only one thing that can top Johnny B's is my grandma's chicken and dumplings but this restaurant is up there
google avatar

Maria C.

Yelp
You can tell it's popular with residents. People know each other and the waitresses know how to carry several plates like good old-fashioned diners. Had the French Toast with bacon, which was meaty and crispy. Hubby had the chicken fried steak, eggs and hash browns. Hardly looked up. Buttery biscuit with gravy is the bomb.
google avatar

Donn D.

Yelp
This place is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but we decided to give it a shot as the reviews were good, and when traveling cross country we try not to hit up too many fast food joints. The menu was pretty extensive, the wife had liver and onions (she just ain't quite right in the head but I still love her) which she said was not bad. I had a better than average tuna melt. The fries were nothing special but that's okay. I would give this place more stars but for the people. No masks. No social distancing. Random strangers/locals standing over your table as they talk to their friends a few tables over, or flirt with the waitresses. It just did not give my Covid era emotions the warm fuzzies.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Based on our lunch at Johnny B's this weekend, I think this cafe is sorely over-rated. We ordered their 'famous' green chile patty melt sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the chicken breast sandwich. The chicken breast sandwich was simply a broiled breast on a plain hamburger bun. No dressing or sauce, no lettuce or relish: nothing. My patty melt was heavy on the processed cheese but the signature green chile was hard to find. The sweet potato fries were cold and limp. Sorry, but this place should be considered only as a last resort.
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
I can always count on a great meal at Johnny B's. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner you get good portions of what you order, and the staff is always pleasant and professional. VERY respectful to my service dog and you don't have to wait long to get your order. Their atmosphere is nice and they also have a great choice of deserts and ice cream.
google avatar

J. Lane R.

Yelp
Their red chili chicken enchiladas are the best! I was on my way to Santa Fe. Stopped here for lunch. I did not expect too much, but was blown away. They were actually the best enchiladas I had during my trip to New Mexico. Even better than all the other restaurants I ate at in Santa Fe.
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
We were in town for the weekend to attend the Chile Festival in Hatch. Since this restaurant was right near our hotel, and the Yelp reviews were favorable, we stepped inside Johnny B's. Pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was on a Sunday morning. It was nice to see how friendly everyone was and to see how everyone knew everyone. A great vibe. Hubs had the "Johnny Special" with an over easy egg and I had the Biscuits & Gravy with 1 biscuit and sausage patties. They served COKE products! (a huge plus for me). Food was hot and yummy. I had two complaints: the gravy was a tad too runny for me. (Personally, I like a thicker gravy.) Sausage patties were a little overcooked and hard. Service was a bit slow (to be expected in these times) but all the waitresses were working hard and getting it done! If we're ever in TorC again, we would definitely stop here again.

Candy M.

Yelp
Came up for new year's place was closed, it would be nice to know that ahead of time. We were told by another shop, this place would be opened on the 2Jan2023. No sign posted that I would be close. If you know your going to be close, post the dates up. It would help visitors plan their schedule.

Danny E.

Yelp
Great people and good food. Red Chili is on point. Root beer floats are great. Go to place when in T or C.

Margaret S.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way to Albuquerque. I had enchiladas with red chile my husband had tamales. Both plates were delicious. Waitresses were very courteous and helpful! Very cozy place! We will stop by again!

Yelp
El Faro was pretty good considering that it's a small town in the middle of nowhere. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends!!!

Yelp
Good food, good atmosphere and friendly staff. Ate here a couple times while visiting, would do it again.

Yelp
Great Value! I will be back again. Great food and even better customer service! Portions are perfect and at a fair price! I had the Denver omelette with biscuits and gravy. My dad had eggs, bacon, hash browns and a pancake. The coffee is good too.
