Jazz brunch is exactly what you want on a hangover-filled weekend morning. And oh does Johnny D's deliver. I always arrive before noon to ensure that there's no wait, and it's typically crowded but not packed earlier in the day.
You sit at a table and are immediately greeted by the soothing sounds of a live jazz band playing onstage. It's just the right noise level so you can enjoy the music while still talking to your friends comfortably. I could stay here for hours. (Ok let's be real. I have stayed for hours, much to our waitress's dismay).
What's the best way to calm a hangover? With more alcohol, obviously. And these guys have some awesome options. Hot alcoholic drinks are my go-to for instant comfort on a chilly morning, so I fell in love with one that combined coffee, chocolate, and Kahlua.
In terms of foods, the regular menu boasts brunch staples like pancakes, blintzes, omelets, and eggs. I'm more complex than that, so for me the specials are the way to go. I've gotten the berry Challah french toast, which was very sweet and a large portion, and the egg scramble with caramelized onions and goat cheese, a truly winning combination when combined with a healthy dose of hot sauce.
Each entree comes with the choice of a little bowl of grits or oatmeal as a brunch appetizer of sorts. I've tried both, and you should go oatmeal. As a Southern girl who knows her grits, these just don't have the proper consistency or flavor. And they serve them with a glob of butter on top which melts into a yellow pool over everything. No thanks. The oatmeal isn't the best I've ever had, but it's warm and comforting. I find it to be a great option since, when ordering a savory main dish, you can still get your sweet fix.
Combining alcohol, coffee, sweet, and savory... that's what brunch is all about! Throw in some live jazz, and Johnny D's has got itself a regular bruncher.
