West Plaza’s tiny stone‑oven shop slings floppy, well‑seasoned slices and whole pies. Frequently cited by Kansas City Magazine and The Pitch; locals love the late‑evening takeout and Monday deals.

Google
Definitely the best pizza I've had outside of Italy! Easy to find Just west of the Plaza on 47th Street Johnny Jo's has been providing an authentic Italian pizza to hungry Kansas City citizens for over 16 years. The plaza west location that the princess and I visited last night does have a couple of outdoor tables but there is no indoor dining area so it's basically Carry out only. The parking is off street in front and behind the building. Put this one on your list.

Google
Amazing Pizza!! The Lasagna Pizza is So Delish, prepared with fresh sausage that is raw before they cook your pizza, really seals the deal on making an authentic tasting, lasagna pizza with the ricotta cheese and sauce!!

Google
I ate here one time, the pizza was incredible. The next week i ordered online again, and showed up to find the place was closed. My online order went through and I was confused….. tonight I called in my order instead and told them about that experience, they apologized to me, and made it right. Fantastic service, and great pizza. My new favorite spot in the KC Area!

Google
Crispy crust and delicious toppings. This was a great slice of pie. Board games made this fun. Good music. Clean tables and restroom. Lots of seating. The gal making pizza was hard at work, bringing food to the table, and super nice. Will definitely treat myself here again.

Google
Got the Stromboli. The crust/dough looks and actually taste more like a flour tortilla. Update: I got the craps after eating. Pretty sure the dough was undercooked.

Google
Pizza good. The lady in charge tonight showed no human compassion. I'm 72 years old and walk to the place of business. I asked to use the bathroom. She said we don't have a public bathroom. She said it was a health violation if she let me use. I asked her what about human kindnesd?. She still said no. The young man who was helping her gave be a bottle of water.

Google
The ingredients are fresh and I love the fact that I can order by slices so I can try different pizzas. I liked tomato & artichoke, and pepperoni & sausage. But margarita sauce was too sweet and dry. The dough was very bland and all three slices were burnt on the bottom.

Google
Johnny Jo's has been on my list of pizza places to go to for awhile. Service was friendly. Atmosphere is lacking but they are carry out so I get it. The pizza was mid. I enjoyed the oregano on the pie and the large pepperoni slices. But the crust sauce and cheese were just ok. Better than chain pizza but I wouldn't go out of my way again to pick up a pie from here.

Yelp
Great slice of Pizza! Totally recommend this little hole in the wall place! Go check them out.

Yelp
I was incredibly surprised by Johnny Jo's. It's a whole in the wall that you can easily drive by without noticing because it's not on a main drag with other restaurants. But this place should totally get more love in Kansas City than I think they do. I grabbed a slice of pepperoni and they had these huge slices of pepperoni that I've not seen anywhere else. The pie was cooked very well and had a good crust. There isn't any real room inside or outside for any kind of dine-in, so you'll always want to get your pie to go. Definitely will be stopping by again. You can see more of our experience on our YouTube travel channel: https://youtu.be/8l2KvVoSapM

Yelp
Food good. Customer service terrible. I'm a 72 year old man. I walked to the business. I asked to use the bathroom and the lady in charge said they don't have a public restroom. I told her I really needed to go. She said it would be a health violation. I said what about human kindness and she still said no. At least the young man working with her gave me a bottle of water.

Yelp
Picked up a Too Good To Go order from here yesterday and let's just say, I'll definitely be back! The two slices I got were both delicious and different, which was fun. One was a meat lovers dream with sausage chunks and one giant pepperoni whereas, the other slice was vegetarian sans tomato sauce with a herby green pesto instead but, it had fresh tomatoes on top. Both options rocked, they were super tasty once I reheated them in my oven. The dough/crust was chewy while still having a good char, the undercarriage was solid. It was some good dough for sure. Also, the chocolate covered cannoli was a nice treat I would have never picked for myself but the chocolate shell was rich without being overly sweet, just wish the filling was more mascarpone heavy and not just an icing like sweet cream, think doughnut filling... It's definitely a to-go pizza place so don't try to go here if you're aiming to eat inside but, once you're inside take a look around and see if you can spot the ninja turtle hanging out.

Yelp
Johnny Jo's has been around for a while and is always in the conversation for best pizza in KC. I knew I was due for a visit hen I saw the new Italian Beef sandwich promoted on Facebook. I'm so glad that I went because the Italian beef sandwich is amazing. Everyone who loves The Bear is thirsty for some beef. Johnny Jo's put its own spin on this sandwich with the Dutch crunch bread. I enjoyed the giardiniera and the au jus which made it a well rounded sandwich. It's on the pricier side for a sandwich but it was packed with meat and the value is there. I called in the order and the lady working that night was super nice and she got the order perfect. I also had some pizza slices and cannolis included in this order. They have great cannolis.

Yelp
I called into Johnny Jo's on a Friday night, as I was in the mood for pizza. The restaurant shuts down in the afternoon and doesn't open back till 5, so if you place an order around opening, it will take about 45-50 minutes to be prepared. When I arrived to the pizzeria, I was greeted by the friendly cashier at the front. She went to grab my pizza, which gave me a moment to look at all the unique pizza themed decor. I was blown away by the size of the New York style slices when I opened the box. Unfortunately, the pizza wasn't cut all the way through, so I had to grab a pizza cutter and finish the job on my own. The pizza crust was thick and crispy, but also thin where it mattered, perfect for folding. The amount of sauce and cheese was well balanced, but not enough for me personally. I'll get extra sauce and cheese next time around! I loved the combination of pepperoni, sausage, green peppers and onions. Next visit, I'd like to try something with tons of meat piled on! **There was a bucket of free bracelets near the cash register, and I snagged a very cute one! (See picture)

Yelp
Huge pies, always fresh, authentic Italian style pizza. Garlic knots are a great appetizer from them also. Two thumbs up.

Yelp
Lasagna pizza is soooo Margarita very good as well. Pepperoni and cheese niiiiice too ! Lady working very nice and informitive. Will go back !

Yelp
Ok the 4th star is because I like to see young people working hard to run a pizza place all by themselves. But to maintain their reputation, Johnny Jo needs to polish up a few things. I would suggest they cook down the red sauce more. It's too thin. The garlic knots are supposed to be a show stopper. But they're cooked unevenly. Maybe they need lower heat for longer time.
google avatar

Yelp
Had an amazing only po'boy style roast beef sandwich, best I've had! Wife had veggie pizza that was delicious - can't wait for a return trip to town, will be back!
google avatar

Jenna C.

Yelp
Crispy simple delicious pizza for a good price. It is a cute little Italian style building with a small staff. Always made fresh. They're not always open consistently so I recommend checking online to make sure they are open before you head over.
google avatar

Yelp
2nd try, so sad Was once the best pizza in the city Now, bland cardboard with a very scant amount of cheese I'll buy you some yeast if you need help Crust isn't even a quarter of an inch Not talking about the base, the crust Ugh And $10 for 2 slices
google avatar

Yelp
We were disappointed, we got a 16" "The Works" or supreme pizza but it had barely any sauce or toppings on it. I looked back at previous years photos on yelp and the works pizza used to have lots of toppings so that was disappointing. The ingredients tasted fresh, but we didn't like the crust at all, just wasn't our style. I think I was especially disappointed because we paid over $30 for this pizza with hardly any toppings and no sauce so there wasn't much flavor. I'm giving 3 stars for the fresh ingredients and timeliness to make the pizza, but not recommending this to friends.

Yelp
Stopped in here while on a mini getaway to Kansas City with my family. We were visiting the famous outlet mall with all the Christmas lights and made the half mile hike up a steep hill to eat at this establishment. A lot of places claim to be New York style pizza. Recently going to NYC earlier this year i can day with confidence this place fits in with the other quick stop pizza by the slice places in NYC. Pizza was very tasty and better then your average pizza. Like a true NYC pizza stop there is very limited seating and they do nit he for fountain drinks. My only knock was we did have a decent wait. Granted it was a Saturday night and it appeared majority of the business that caused our wait was from call ins. But it's a little frustrating sitting in an empty restaurant seeing all these tasty pizzas being prepared and none of them being yours. All in all this was my favorite food spot I had while in Kansas City. Worth checking out especially if you want that NYC pizza experience.

Yelp
We ordered a Classic for delivery via GrubHub. No idea who's fault it was, but we received a plain cheese pizza. We were hungry and didn't want to wait another hour, so we accepted it. It was really good cheese pizza, but if you want to get what you order, I would recommend against ordering online.

Yelp
Well my daughter and i have been eating in local neighborhoods. Bar is great for food, drink and fun. Bay boys sammies are wonderful We next made our way to Johnny Jo. When i called in order 30 minutes later i arrived to pizza not being made. Waiting 15 minutes later the under cooked and fully charged$$$$ pizza was ready. Pizza was not fully cooked so when i arrived at my daughters place to ear the pizza was terrible. Lastly the girl working was filling some voting jars instead of making my pizza. Wont be going back there EVER.

Harvey R.

Yelp
I am a thin crust, NY style pizza snob. I was absolutely blown away by this pizza. While the crust wasn't NY thin crust, it was delicious. The sauce was delightfully flavorful with a bit of heat. The cheese was perfect. We had pepperoni, mushrooms, and black olive toppings on our pizzas and all were very good. The only negative comment is that the cheese and pepperoni were a bit more oily than I would have preferred (less oil would have made this a 5 star review). I will return and recommend that anyone searching for pizza in this area get their fix here.

Yelp
This is a little joint in the West Plaza that uses some "old family recipes" and bakes a scrumptious pizza. I put old family recipes in quotes because the family in this family business says their pizza is often mistaken for New York-style pizza, but is actually baked according some recipes that have been handed down over the years. Regardless of what style it really is, this pizza is really good. You can order by the slice or by the pie. You can also order garlic knots and stromboli. Beware, the pizza slices are large enough to fold, so you might want to eat cautiously because if you eat with your eyes then those slices will add up. Like I mentioned above, this is a fairly small place so most people order to go however there are a couple of tables out front if you want to buy a slice and hang out.

Yelp
THIS IS NOT NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA. The owner's very specific about it. But it absolutey doesn't matter because it's so freaking good. It's some of the absolutely best pizza I've ever had. Fresh, crisp, exceptional toppings, terrific tomato sauce and high quality cheese. You can't ask for more. You can get it by the slice or in several different sizes for a personal pizza or for the whole family. Just get a pizza or a slice here. I promise you won't regret it.
google avatar

Morgan J.

Yelp
Fast and delicious pizza. They don't claim to be NYC style but it's very very close and it's great! I'm more of a red sauce person but the Tom and Art is sooo good! Thankful I live so close.

Yelp
I did an online order and it was ready within 30 minutes. First time getting pizza from here and I will be back. I created my own with pepperoni, ham, and ricotta cheese. It was SO tasty. The crust is good and was cooked perfectly. I am going to try by the slice next time. Cute little place and glad I can support local. I love the fact you can order online and there is enough parking around to pick up orders. I didn't see any seating outside but I easily could have missed it. It is small inside and no seating inside.

Yelp
I had the best sandwich of my life at the location in parlor. So amazing and the owner is so friendly!

Yelp
Shelter-in-place is way more enjoyable with a pizza from Johnny Jo's, but also on any other day! This pizzeria was introduced to us by our friends Anthony/LoLo and we're so lucky because our pizza tasting palettes are now judgy AF. Stone oven thin crust pizza made with fresh ingredients and they have stramboli's! We love the Fresh Mozzarella Pizza for obvious reasons, the fresh mozzarella + basil and the sauce! The sauce tasted light, with lots of flavor without the overwhelming feeling. Pictured is a 16" Fresh Mozzarella Pizza (8 total slices..oops held zero restraint and just had to have a slice pre-photo). The 16" was the right size for a couple, 4 slices/person. Zero leftovers! Also, peep the Sprite courtesy of Johnny Jo's as well, rinfrescante!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after seeing the ratings and pictures. What we got delivered was nothing like this. I'm not sure if ours was just messed up or what. Tasted like old frozen pizza, and was super thin, and hard as a rock. We ended up throwing it in the trash. The picture below illustrates how stiff the pizza was. Disappointed.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Love their pineapple jalapeño pizza! This is a cute place tucked away in West Plaza neighborhood. Huge slices! Great comfort food.
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
Arguably the best pizza we have had in years!! The pizza smelled and tasted delicious. Adding this to my list of favorites. Thank you for the great food and service!
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
Zero complaints. Got a carry out pizza. Crust is so thin yet full of flavor and delicate with a nice chewy texture. Not at all greasy and we had sausage and pepperoni on it. The San Marzano tomatoes in the sauce are the show stopper with a nice hint of garlic. I'm not a pepperoni fan but this pepperoni was sliced big and thin and it was good. Sausage was great but it is heavy on the fennel. Veggie toppings are diced small and fresh. Just wish we lived closer. FYI They charge almost $3 if you order online as a fee.

Yelp
Johnny Joe's has been perfect for when you don't feel like cooking, but want to follow COVID safety measures. It's the best of all worlds- getting a specialty pizza, supporting local business, and doing it in a safe/socially distant manner. I typically call ahead, go in to pay (all employees wear masks) and then go out to my car where they'll bring the pie to me. I personally love that there's no dining inside because it eliminates risk during these times. The pizza is phenomenal, staff is super chill & friendly, and wait time is nothing considering how in-demand they are. Not to mention, you can literally see the fresh sauce, flour, etc. when inside... Looking for fresh ingredients? Try this place! They have awesome deals for Monday nights too, so it's always a must for me! My favorites so far are "The Works" & "Fresh Mozzarella". Can't say enough great things!

Yelp
This place is truly a hidden gem. I lived on the plaza for 2 years and worked on it for nearly 6. Not once did I ever even hear of this pizza joint. Why? Idk, I'm obviously hanging out with the wrong crowd. They make some of the best pizzas in the area and I don't think anyone can really argue that. They're huge, have quality toppings, the crust is the bomb and their side, of their sides, are mouth watering. So, if you somehow stumble a crossed this place thinking, "huh, how have I never heard of this?" You're not alone, this guy did the same thing. All I ask is you walk through that door and order a big ol pizza, I promise you'll be coming back again.

Shannon R.

Yelp
This was my first time at Johnny Jo's. I order a Fresh mots and basil pie for pick up order on Thursday, 8/17/23 When the pizza came home it turned out to be an all meat pie....what a disappointment. We ate it anyway cause we were hungry, but it was NOT what I ordered. It was a busy night, but I am wondering if it is there online ordering system? They have the same one as the sandwich shop next door, which has had the same issue. Anyway, bummer.

Yelp
Wow...good time, great pizza...I have a love affair with pizza from the first pizzeria I entered in Columbia ,Mo in 1962 to Westport Pizzeria in Westport , Ct(the 70s)....the expriences of pizza by the slice around NYU, Ny,NY....(late 70s) This place made all the connections, family owned, neighborhood joint, fresh ingredients and hospitality. I had the works, and the El Diablo..yummy. My wife had two types of cheese pizzas which I enjoyed with her....the excitement of eating cheese with a fresh tomato sauce and bursts of olive oil and sea salt made my tummy happy.. This is a carry out place yet there is a small seating area which we enjoyed while visiting with Johnny.....the owner and cook! A great break from the chains!

Don C.

Yelp
This pizza has the best crust I've ever had however there was not enough cheese pepperoni sausage or toppings of any kind My family and I feel cheated out of a great pizza we spent $90 for food That looks like nothing on the yelp site I wish I could get my money back We are traveling and waited for this pizza because of the ratings on yelp and were very disappointed Strangely the supposed owner of this place continues contact me I have requested he not contact me but he will not stop I have never had this sort of thing happen to me how do I stop him I use Yelp all the time I don't want to abandon it
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Good stuff! And great service! Walked in and one of the dudes behind the counter came out and walked me through what they had. Very cordial and accommodating. The NY style pizza is GOOD! Huge, thin, greasy like in NY. Fold over to eat it. Stop in this tiny little gem ASAP!!!
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
Spontaneously stopped in while driving by the area. It's Just a small hole-in-the-wall looking pizza shack to grab pizza to go. With such great reviews I couldn't pass it up. Turns out if you pick up a 2-topping pizza 16 or 18" before 7 it's happy hour prices! The gal working wasn't super helpful as far as helping a first timer picking something out. Highly recommend doing your research on the menu and pictures before coming. Feeling pressured to pick a pizza and dumb for asking questions like "what's your popular pizza?" ... I bought several single slices to try. I felt like they were all good, the crust is the highlight. Super thin and super crispy. I'm going to hold out on any crazy star rating yet. Going to try Tagan when I order an entire pizza fresh. For now I'm going to say it's good but not good enough to truck across the city or turn around to go get it again tomorrow.
google avatar

Jamie N J.

Yelp
This was our go to pizza place since we moved here a year and a half ago. So sad it has changed in the last few months and it's just so dry and flavorless. We're so bummed

Yelp
I tried Johnny Jo's Pizzeria FoodTruck today and let me say it is by far the best pizza I have yet to try in KC!!! I have tried for the past year to find a style of pizza similar to what you'd find on the streets of NYC and this is it, a perfect thin crust pizza that is delicious all around!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Never been at their location but had them at limitless brewery with their food truck at this location, super friendly and on top of that, are better than the old Chicago pizza, sometimes he gives out special and I took advantage of it, when they go to the limitless brewery people will come out to eat at this location
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic NYC style pizza that is made with quality ingredients and is just good overall pizza. I'm not going to go out on a limb and say this is the best pizza in KC or anything like that, but it is damn good and a fun little neighborhood spot. When you order a whole pizza from them, it's always has delicious crust and toppings. The slices are gigantic, foldable NYC slices that are hard to put down. I especially love the pepperoni they use here. Also of note, the dressed (i.e. buttered and slathered with deliciousness) garlic knots. Get those and don't think twice. When I go in to just order a slice, I'm not as big a fan. Mainly because, while traditional, I don't really like that they just take a cold slice and warm it up. It doesn't taste nearly as good as when you get a normal, fresh to order pizza. What I like about the KC pizza scene is you have tons of various styles and many delicious options. This unique style is slowly becoming more of a "go-to" for us and I love supporting this friendly shop.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like New York Style pizza, more than likely, this is going to be a delicious choice for a meal (or a few if you get a big pizza!). The boyfriend and I decided to get a "The Works" pizza and some garlic knots for a night at home while watching the Royals game. Truthfully, I really enjoyed the pizza... I liked how it was fresh toppings and the garlic knots are realllllllllllllllly garlic-y. YUM. I'd recommend asking for a cup of sauce to go with your knots because they don't automatically come with them. I know they have lunch specials here and the pizza is HUGE. Like, pizza slices at least as big as your face.... (unless you have a massively huge face.... but then again, it might be that big still!) :) Just check it out. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did the boyfriend. We'll be back!

Yelp
Went in last night after Bay Boy's sandwiches were sold out. I got the Sicilian Stromboli, an order of garlic knots, and a bottled Coke. It was all fantastic. The garlic knots came out hot and doughy perfection. Covered in garlic and butter. They were fantastic. The stromboli took a while to make. I think around 20 minutes. The cashier told us it was going to take a while, but man, I was hungry. Im glad I ordered the garlic knots. They came out in 5-10 minutes. The Sicilian was excellent. I was only able to eat half of it. The sauce was incredible. We sat outside, listened to the classic rock they had playing, and spent the evening there. Excellent experience. Really good lemonade too.
google avatar

Chelsey V.

Yelp
Big, big, BIG! Tasty garlic knots and pizza is just too good not to get! Place is small so it's more of a carry out, totally worth waiting a bit for a fresh made pizza!
google avatar

Crys F.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch yesterday and was amazed to find they had 4 pizza on display, after reading some other reviews I was prepping myself for 1 or 2. The smell going in was that of warm baked crust with a hint of garlic, mouth already watering! I ended up with the combo pizza slice for $3.50 and a half order of garlic knots (7 for $2) it was perfect! The Crust was Crisp on the outside, no limpy pizza here! And the flavors were balanced to perfection! On to the knots, they were good, buttery & with a hint of garlic and Parmesan. Pizza 51 used to be my favorite lunch spot, but for the value and taste, I will happily make the 1 mile extra drive here next time! PS Yes they reheat they're food, most places do (like Pizza 51) how else are they going to heat up your pizza quickly? It's better than waiting 20 minutes for a slice! Perspective people!

Yelp
We ordered a pizza and Stromboli from Johnny Jo's tonight, and were told it would be 20-50 minutes for delivery. Mind you, we ONLY placed the order for delivery because their website indicated that they currently had free delivery. After an hour and a half we contacted the restaurant to see what the issue was, and we were told that they had "dropped the food on the floor" and that they were having to redo the whole order. Ok... so 2 hours after placing the order, it arrived, and everything was cold. I tried to call the restaurant approximately 10 times but every single time resulted in a busy signal. While I have enjoyed this pizza in the past, I will not be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Fernando L.

Yelp
Dang good pizza. Great taste. My family loved the pizza alot. The crust, a bit thin for me, but definitely enjoyed the taste. The garlic knots were great tasting too. We got a Works pizza and a Cheese w/ pineapple pizz. I do recommend this pizza. Sorry, no pics. We were too hungry to think about pics, but I took a picture of the menu and latest prices.

Yelp
So let's take a second to talk about the difference between good pizza and great pizza I find myself more often then not having a lot of "good" pizza but rarely great... and this was no exception. . The sauce had a great homemade flavor, the cheese to sauce to bread ratio was spot on the cheese was not to heavy but just enough to cover the top and the pepperonis were nice and large. You can tell they like to focus on quality, however! The crust doughy, the bottom was not crisp dare I say even a little too greasy!?! But we aren't going to knock them for that! We're eating pizza after all get over it! And the 16in pie was about $17 +$2.50 for pep. A little pricy but not bad when you take into account the quality ingredients. Enjoy

Patrick S.

Yelp
Great and fast made pizzas! One of the best crusts I've had in some time. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Got the Lasagna pizza. One of the best pizzas I've ever had. What a great concept and the ingredients were fantastic. The sauce was on point and the ricotta cheese was superb. Will definitely get this next time. Well worth the try.

Yelp
Garbage pizza. Tasted like expensive frozen pizza. Heard so many good things but I ended up throwing half of it away.

Yelp
Guys, I don't really know how it happened. Sometime in the last few months, Johnny Jo's has become my favorite pizzeria in KC. Maybe it was the first time I ordered their Monday special (four toppings of your choice) and received a feast that can only be described as fit for a king...or two...all for the non-regal price of $20. Maybe it was the fourth time I ordered the garlic knots (out of four visits) and reached a new level of enlightenment as the butter and garlic and marinara sauce created a cosmic convergence of flavors in my mouth. Maybe it's simply the convenience of not having to fly to NYC and traverse hordes of people or middle-aged balding men in white tank tops (fuggedaboutit!) just to get a slice I can fold up and eat like a sandwich. Whatever it is, Johnny Jo's has got it going on. If I'm not creating my own pizzafied gluttony with the Monday special, I usually order The Meathead because all of that protein has to be good for you, right? But really, both the pepperoni and Italian sausage Johnny Jo's uses are exceptional. The Virginia ham and hamburger are just icing on the pie. If I'm accommodating my wife's glaring weakness for rabbit food, then we end up getting The Classic, which eschews the sausage and ham but adds onions, bell peppers and more cheese. Regardless of the order, the marinara sauce is constantly on point, and the crust is consistently just the right amount of crispy and has to be infused with some sort of magic flour to not flop from the gratuitous amount of toppings it houses. Next time you're hungry...and I'm talking like Galactus levels of world devouring ravenous...get yourself a delicious disk from Johnny Jo's. Or find a few friends. No judgment. Unless you don't order the garlic knots. Then we're going to have a problem.
