14 Lively Irish Pubs to Grab a Pint in Houston | Eater Houston

"Part of the McElroy’s trio of pubs, this Montrose hotspot is home to one of the most spacious and festive patios in town. Blending the vibes of a traditional Irish pub with a Southern backyard kickback, the bar offers plenty of pints ranging from craft beer options to classic drafts alongside wine and cocktails. Weekends are especially raucous with brunch running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and steak night on Tuesdays also draws the crowds. Don’t scoff at the food options either — from bar pies and corned beef, you can grab something hearty to pair with your libation of choice."

Went here twice in the last two days bc we were at a nearby comedy fest. The bartenders don’t just cater to the regulars which is nice. You can easily get a drink and friendly service even when it’s busy. Really liked this place and will be back!

Google
Great place for beers on tap. Mixed drinks are good. I usually come here for my soccer teams supporters club and steak night on Tuesdays

Google
Bar advertised the Open so came in to catch the first day. Sure wish they would have advertised they don’t have AC! Staff was great but temperature was unbearable.

Michael C.

Google
Great place for a drink and to watch a game.

Google
Amazing service, cozy inside, and great place all around. Only downside, when it rains you have to walk through some mud to get to your car. But we live in Houston, so the same can be said about most any other business in the city so it's no skin off my bones.

For the love of God and all that is holy, ask for a SMALL AMOUNT of mustard on your burger. Our bread was soggy because of the despicable amount of mustard in it.

Google
Good place to grab a beer! They have a ton of selection on tap. It can get a bit loud being right on Waugh but the outdoor seating area/patio is nice. The bartenders were friendly and helpful. I tried the turkey sandwich - not bad.

Google
Furthest from what I would consider an Irish Pub. Food choices were limited so we crossed our fingers on the nachos and pizza. Im no chef, neither are my friends but what was served was nothing short of a 3year old making food in an easy bake oven. Id be embarassed pushing food like this out. Two stars because the bartender was really polite and understanding but at this pace I see this place shutting down quick. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Came here for St Patty's day and boy oh boy did I have the best time!!! Such an awesome spot to come and celebrate at an authentic Irish Pub!!! A bunch of friends and I met here and couldn't seem to want to leave! We sat out on the patio, it was such a beautiful day! Somehow we managed to snag a table that fit most of our crew, but there was good space for standing around as well. Soon before we knew it, this place was bustling with fellow patty's day folks! Great vibe with the music that was playing. The bartendings were tending for sure, with flowing green beer, great drinks and shots! They had such a fun positive vibe all day with the droves of people and drinks that was coming their way!! Parking was definitely a lil sus in the beginning, as if you're a speed racer like myself, you can pass the driveway pretty quickly, but I looped around and found that there is a back street also that you can get into their parking lot which is an unpaved little area behind the pub. As we drank, of course we got hungry! The few little apps and stuff we tried were good for pub food, and did the trick to keep us going for the rest of the day! I don't think we intended to spend as much time here as we did, but that just goes to show that this was the place to be!!! Huge shoutout to Jason for bringing us all together to celebrate this amazing holiday!!!

Yelp
Johnny McElroy's was the spot to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year with the crew. I arrived right when they opened and was able to find a parking spot out back without any problems. If pulling in from Waugh, the entrance to the lot is a little tricky to find. The lot is essentially an unfinished grass and dirt lot so keep that in mind. I was literally the first customer in and was greeted by the super friendly staff. They had this place decked out for the holiday and had beads and koozies laid out everywhere for all those who were celebrating. I was a little worried that this place was going to be a dud but the crowds came in droves a little later. This place looks like a house turned pub. The inside is smaller than the patio. We rolled with a pretty large crew and was able to snag a nice table on the patio that was covered. When the crowds reached it's peak, maneuvering around got a little more challenging. It got busy but they handled it with ease. Green beer and drinks was what I was looking for and they delivered on that. They had a nice St. Patrick's Day menu set up that had a nice variety to it. You could get a light beer and have it colored green. I started off with a Snake Bite, which is Guiness and a cider. The dark beer typically floats over the lighter cider and has a nice presentation to it. We didn't really get that here as they were pumping out drinks quick in smaller portions. It still tasted fine. I also got to try a bright green holiday margarita that was delicious. Drink wise, they have a very impressive selection of draft and bottled beers, as well as a full bar. They also have a pretty nice looking food menu with all your typical bar fare. We only partook in chips and queso which was surprisingly tasty. From what I saw, the other food looked good too. Overall, a great time was had by all on this wonderful holiday. The live music was a bonus, but I can not remember hearing one Irish song though. I could see myself coming back here from time to time. May the luck of the Irish be with ya!

Yelp
One should never turn down an opportunity to pay homage to Saint Pádraig, and homage was indeed paid this day, the 17th of March. I can think of no greater way to honor one of my favorite holidays than making it my 500th review! Mad thanks to Justin T. (and crew), Lupe M., Jazzy T. for staking out and claiming the largest table on the patio. Always good to get some time from Victor H. and Brian T. in the books. Great time with everyone that came out! Parking - We met bright and early on this lovely Sunday holiday. Off the main road, the entrance to parking was not easily found or utilized, most folks missed it and came through the rear. Even with a decent crowd, parking didn't seem to be too much of an issue. They have some established parking, and also an open field behind it for overflow. No lay required. Yay free! The Bar - As one might expect, there's a large bar inside provisioning cocktails, draft beer, and maybe even some wine (don't quote me on the wine. I didn't see it). The folks behind the bar were a hustlin'. They had about 5 bar tenders in the main bar, moving people quickly. They also had a pop-up bar on the patio that was cash and venmo only. Smaller menu of items, but a good place to hit without a line if they had what you wanted. All the staff were very patient and friendly. There is food, looked like normal bar fare, but I did not purchase any. For the holiday they had live music, some swag out on the tables, and some decent drink specials. There were shots galore. My one complaint is that an Irish Car Bomb should be a full glass (pint) and not half a solo cup. The Digs - The bar itself is what you would expect of an Irish den. Inside is a little darker, and has a nostalgic feel to it. Enough room to fit enough folks, and largely standing room (at least for this holiday setup). Bar was easily accessible, low wait times. They have a large patio outside that made all the difference for drinking on a lovely day that had a wee bit o'water comin' down. The restrooms were clean (as they can be with a bunch of raucous hooligans milling about), no long waits. Good shade on the patio in the sun, and cover from the rain. We rolled with a crowd of just under 20 split between two tables, one covered one not. Everyone had a great time, service was good, ambience was on point. Twas a great holiday with great people, in a solid bar, with mostly great weather. Highly recommend spending your next St. Paddy's here.

Yelp
Cool little hole in the wall with a crowd that appear to get to know each other. Appetizers and drinks were good. Music playing and as the night went on it turned into an impromptu singing as a large group. Have been here a couple of times and will return!
google avatar

Yelp
Who know a pub would have an amazing salad?! The Deli Chop is on point and extremely addictive!
google avatar

Christopher Z.

Yelp
Have gone here a couple times and it's okay, nothing special in my opinion. We live nearby so thought it could be a good option to watch some sports and get some food. They do have a lot of screens which is nice for games and obviously you can get drinks, but the food is the pain point for me. We've tried a few different things form here and it just wasn't that good. Maybe we need to try other options, but we just have not been impressed by what we tried. For example, we got a pizza here that just had low quality ingredients and didn't even come out warm. If you just want to watch a game and grab a drink it's fine, but anything more and there are probably better options around.

Yelp
Johnny McElroy's Irish Pub & Patio is within walking distance from my office so I stopped by with a co-worker for happy hour on a Friday. We had a blast and this Irish Pub. While we didn't try any of the food, we took full advantage of the happy hour. Wells are on special during their happy hour so I stuck with one of my go to's---rum and coke. The indoor area has your typical pub feel and there's a Jukebox where you can pay to play your favorite tunes. To the side of the long bar, there's some seating outside of the bar by the front entrance. With that being said, we spent most of our time on their outdoor patio. The weather was nice so it was a no-brainer. Out there, there's picnic table-style seating and more comfortable lounge seating. Service was friendly and efficient. The prices are affordable. We made some friends randomly. All in all, it was a great evening.

Yelp
Great sports bar to watch our teams play. Plenty of TV screens available inside and in the deck to watch our Astros! Sat at the bar on Tuesday steak night. The steaks were perfectly cooked as ordered with delicious side vegetables. The bartenders (both female) were very nice and attentive. This was our first time here. We will return often!!

Yelp
Great brews - laid back environment! This is one of our neighborhood bars we walk to and my husband, I, and friends enjoy it! They have a great selection of beers and liqour. They always play good music from oldies go alternative! The food here I heard is not that great, but I never personally had it before! J just come here for the drinks and vibes outside on the patio! On the patio, the service is still good as they always check up on you for any refills! Will always be back

Yelp
So I went today and everything was going well, then our food came out and we got nachos and a pepperoni pizza - but some of the slices looked questionable. My boyfriend got the pizza and ate half of it anyways. I ordered a margherita pizza to go and put it in my fridge when I got home. I took it out to heat up and I opened it and noticed the slices had been shaken around, however, the slices didn't match each other! The cut lines didn't match and then some slices were shorter than others! How does that happen?? It looked like they took slices from other pizzas, put cheese over it and then reheated and "cut" it again. I'm pretty sure that's not normal. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING don't go. I'll post pictures (Yelp won't let me post a video) I took of it. I flipped it over so I could try to see the cut lines and you can just tell from the back. I'm not bs'ing on this, I work in the industry and I would NEVER think this would be okay to serve. Honestly horrific, terrible. I'm sorry, but I couldn't ever go again.

Yelp
Do not park your car in their parking lot...cameras do not cover the whole lot. Car got broken into last night along with 3 others. All the staff said was sorry call the cops...they need to have security out there if their cameras don't work. Love this bar but just pissed I can't park my car at ab establishment and not worry about my car being broken into.

Yelp
First, the stuff we really want to know about: food and drinks! Popped in for a quick drink with a friend. The bartender let us sample their frozen spicy mango margarita. Very different! It is made with some sort of spicy tequila. While the spicy aspect was not what I was looking for, I did like that it wasn't super sweet. There was a hint of mango. I decided to try their cucumber mule. Very refreshing during these hot Houston summer days! Mt friend had their golden paloma. It was also refreshing. Very good. We found out that their red salsa is homemade, so we shared the chips, salsa and queso. It was all very good. But, the salsa was so thick that it was nearly the consistency of tomato paste. However, everything was fresh and had nice flavors. There is a wall of local brewery (and other breweries) beers on tap for you beer lovers! Second, the reason I gave it 4 stars (instead of 5): this is NOT an Irish pub in any way, shape or form. It's basically a sports bar. We enjoyed it. The bartender was very nice. Prices are reasonable. And, I love the Houston vibe (lots of Astros stuff). But, it is not an Irish pub.

Yelp
I and some friends decided to go here for a drink, sat on the patio, and by the time we finished. My car was broken into by thieves looking for valuables. They took some that weren't in plain sight. If they can break into cars in the no-lighting parking lot, I don't see any reason why they can't just step into their patio at gunpoint to rob everyone. Be careful and park next to the ramp/steps if you have to go here. Be sure to have someone/staff walk you to your car if you aren't parked close. No cameras or proper lighting. Decided to post this just to let y'all know.

Yelp
Great, relaxed place! Quick service and fun season drinks. Minimal parking but worth the stop

Daniel G.

Yelp
Darlene, the manager or whatever, tossed me for basically doing nothing. Then , when she didn't know I was still in ear shot, she told the nice woman behind the bar that, "we dont serve those kind". You guess what she meant.

Yelp
Great place to grab a cold beer , visit amongst friends . Perfect outdoor seating with Houston's weather , pet friendly as well. Wonderful service and staff is very attentive. They also offer a variety of specials throughout the week ! Definitely recommend a visit !!

Yelp
Great service. Great beer selection. Hot Dogs are awesome. Patio great for fur babies. Great to watch the games.

I went here to support my Astros! They on their second game in the world series 2019. This bar irish pubdo of course i tryed their Irish coffee. I was not a fan....I let my bar tender know and she replaced it for free! I end up with the Amarillo Sour it was good and sweet! For appetizer i had the southwest eggrolls which came with a side of sour cream and salsa i loved it i woke up still full...lol! I played a round of mini golf arcade version i did a few close hole shots but no in hole shots. I had a good time at this bar and everyone was super intentive and nice!

Yelp

Yelp
Quiet little bar off Waugh. Went in on a Friday around 6 PM. There were only a handful of people there and it never really got busy. Made it enjoyable to relax and enjoy conversation over drinks. The service was good - pretty quick to check and bring drinks. The outdoor patio is decent sized. The picnic table we were at was a little wobbly, but after a few drinks - who cares? Worth checking out for a quiet night with friends.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and the bartenders! Always so friendly and the food has gotten so good lately. Free hot dogs on Monday, Taco Tuesday, all the food is really tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar. Excellent service. Friendly and quick. Inside there are about half a dozen TVs that they can generally accommodate most sports and teams. Large patio, partially covered, fans and one TV. Great for nice afternoons and evenings. Food is really the only downside. The kitchen isn't very big so it's mainly sandwiches, pizzas and chips. They just started steak night on Monday nights and I believe they have plans to expand the kitchen to allow for more food options. Beer selection is amazing. I'm not certain how many taps exactly but I'd guess 50-60. They also have a good wine selection and can make pretty much any mixed drink. TouchTunes jukebox if you want to play music. Trivia on Tuesdays.
google avatar

Janis S.

Yelp
Great place to watch sports. Megan the bartender was not very friendly, but most other bartenders are great, especially Friday night. The patio is great for cooler weather. I know cars have been broken into at this location and as far as I know there are no cameras so you that is a downfall for this place. There are thieves in the neighborhood. This is a great place for a few beers/drinks.

Yelp
Brand new, and you can still smell the varnish. Lots of wood everywhere. High top tables, long bar, extensive outdoor patio, with a semi open bar as well. Even a fire place with red booths and couches. Plenty of TV's and all turned to ESPN. A new British/Irish/American bar if there ever was one. At first service was slow, and did not notice me for a good 15 minutes. I am not complaining, cause after that they were on top of everything. They have 50 plus taps and a small food menu. There is something for everyone as far as beer. Lots of German, UK, Irish, and American crafts. Live Oak Hefe, Weihenstephaner, Paulaner, to Odell DIPA, even those horrendous Nitro beers and plenty of larger macros as well. Happy hour goes till about 7 every week day, which is $1 off all draughts. Outside of happy hour, some pints can be expensive. Odell Myrcenary should not be pushing $10 a pint, though most Texas draughts run about $6. Pint glasses are all frozen as well, which always annoys me a little. So far an A-OK three star. Nothing exceptional, but not bad. The food is what nocks this down a notch. Basically everything is store bought, or from Sysco. The corned beef for the Reuben is not even Boars Head quality, and ice cold to boot. With soggy generic rye bread that falls apart. They have a nacho (melted Velveta) and salsa (store bought, at least that is what it tasted like) plater, and the completely generic tortilla chips come from that huge stadium sized bag which are all stale. Nice enough place for a drink, but the food is not up to par at all. At least they don't blast your ear drums out with crappy music like they do at the sister bar Shay McElroy's downtown. Everyone seems nice enough here, but just not up to the many other great bars let alone restaurants around.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
My car along with my friend's car was broken into while we were there for happy hour! When we told them, they acted really rude and said they couldn't do anything about it. They claimed no manager was on duty that we could talk to. They basically had the attitude of they didn't care and we were SOL! They didn't even offer to help by calling the cops. I will NEVER be going back there. If you end up at this bar, watch your stuff and cars! There are thieves in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Kan K.

Yelp
We stopped at Johnny McElroy's after a long walked at Bayou trail for beer ;) (not a good combination) the patio is nice and clean. A walking distance is a plus. We will be back!

Angel T.

Yelp
Great place and atmosphere , one of my favorite places to hang and chill, prices are great an extensive selection of draft beers and good food , check out the specials on mondays they're amazing !! Staff is always friendly

Kay C.

Yelp
Beware!!! Daily Specials on Johnny McElroy's website are not always honored.
google avatar

Jordan W.

Yelp
I was really excited for a good craft beer bar in the area and a two block walk away from home...then I went there. Food was below average and the beer prices are REALLY high. I'll go back for only one thing from here on out; the crawfish truck that parks out front. No joke, it's the best I've ever had in Houston. My Louisiana gf agrees that it's the best she's had in Houston as well. So now we just order the crawfish to go and walk back to our deck.

Mike J.

Yelp
All I have to say is that I have never had dull moment here. I love this place, I love the beer selection and all of the staff makes this bar an awesome place to hang out. I'm going to probably live here. I recommend this bar to everybody and their mom!
google avatar

Trey r.

Yelp
Was here a few weeks ago on a business trip. The beer was fine, the service was fine, but what was 100% unacceptable was that the bar allows patrons to smoke inside the bar. By inside I mean, people can sit on a chair outside at a bar that leads inside and blow toxic smoke into the bar. Isn't Houston a non-smoking city? I'll flip a coin to decide if I report this to the city. Get it together. Ever heard of cancer?

Em J.

Yelp
My favorite bar in town... the staff is always so friendly and inviting. It's never a problem to get service and they know what I want before I even walk in and even greet me and my dog with smile when I take him on a walk. Jamie has always been s very attentive and accommodating manager and tries to provide a great experience for us. Brittany and Darlene are some of the best bartenders around as well. I highly recommend this bar.
google avatar

Jan T.

Yelp
Terrible service and parking pretty tough as I almost did not get out. The outdoor service was not good as we had to go in to the bar to get our drinks. This place in the hot summers will not be cool if you know what I mean ... Hot and new .. Not so much ... Hot yeah but not so new!
google avatar

Casey G.

Yelp
I was excited to to see the nice patio, but that excitement was deflated when I had to pay $10 for draft beer. Really?! Menu didn't have prices. This place is not nice nice enough to not show prices. Sorry Johnny McElroy's, Not impressed.
google avatar

Josephine G.

Yelp
The blonde bartender was horribly rude. As an individual who has lived in the UK I do not need to be educated on the makings of an English drink and upon clarifying what I was saying be responded to with "well, this is America." I have never left a bad review of an establishment but my group of friends did not need to be treated in such a condescending manner. There were other servers who were perfectly kind and it's a shame that this person left a bad taste. Also- drinks are overpriced for an Irish "pub" on St. Patrick's Day. $7.50 for a half Guinness and Cider? Come on.
google avatar

Serge G.

Yelp
Cool place, nice patio and good beer selection. Just make sure to bring your W2 Form or Tax refunds if you want to get a beer, way overpriced $$$$$! There are cooler places in the Houston area with a wider selection of Craft Local beers at reasonable price.
google avatar

PHILLIP U.

Yelp
The beer selection is absolutely stellar; 30+ mostly local brews on tap kept at the right temp. The patio is pretty large and probably holds more people than the outside. I love sitting at the bar and just vegging out watching TV and they have 4 pretty large flat screens to enjoy. It's a huge plus that it's about 2 minutes from work but unfortunately, I'll have to work extra hours to pay for the HH specials on draft which are still a couple quarters more than what most places charge during non-HH times.

Scott C.

Yelp
Extensive draft beer selection! I was surprised that they had so many beers (Oberon and hofbrau are some of my favorites!) Great patio and service too. They also have some games (corn hole and a video game). They have large tvs inside if you wanted to watch a sports game at the bar.
google avatar

Barbara M.

Yelp
Great patio, awesome tap wall. Service was fast and energetic. I don't think my beer was empty at all. Thanks, guys! See y'all soon!
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
They have a huge beer selection, most of all the beer I love is on tap. Bartenders here are always a delight and they serve food. I can't ask for more.

Julie S.

Yelp
Great beer selection, friendly service, wonderful atmosphere. Had a lovely experience tonight speaking with the bartender even though it was slow and cold. I'm new to town and will be back.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Beers are a little pricey but they have a huge, dog-friendly patio. Hope they put in some misters for summer though otherwise it will be waaay too hot to frequent.

Carrie Rose S.

Yelp
Awesome outdoor patio facing Waugh, plus over 50 beers on draft! The service is also very fast and the staff is awesome!

Melissa S.

Yelp
Beers are expensive, food is bland and although the outdoor area looks nice it's too close to the road. All you hear is traffic or whatever is being blasted over the radio. Only good thing is that service wasn't bad. Wasn't great either.
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Little pricey but not any different from other bars in the area. Environment is fun, beer selection is bueno. Ample of seating on the patio and is fine now but will revisit in over the Spring and Summer to see how many days get use. Good crowd and good service. Just my experience.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Average pub setting. Above average patio. Clientele is old, white golfers. It needs grunge. Still, good beer selection and nice patio. As others have noted, the beer is way over priced. If we didnt pass it every Sunday coming back from Memorial Park, we might never come here. But if you dont mind paying an extra 2 or 3 bucks per beer, it aint bad also ain't great.

Sara P.

Yelp
It's a convenient location with a big dog friendly patio, but that's where the positives end. The prices for beer and other drinks were on par with that of a fancy restaurant. But this is a no frills Irish pub. What surprised me the most was the poor quality food. We got pizza that was worse than any freezer section grocery store oven pizza. We called it cafeteria pizza because it reminded us of the rubbery bland stuff they'd serve at our middle school back in the 90's. Our friends complained about the food they ordered, too. The only rationale would be if this were a provisional menu until they hire a chef? It's confusing for such a great location with fancy restaurant prices.

Micah R.

Yelp
Just went here for the first time, found out that every night has industry pricing( which I am in ). Great local bar. Great people. They are nice and chatty. Ashlee was the hot bartender and is highly knowledgeable in all kinds of liquor and drinks that would be good with them in them . Highly recommend this place.

R M.

Yelp
I was surprised at how much the beer cost...obviously didn't know find out until I got the bill. The inside is nice and they have a big patio, but I probably would go elsewhere for more reasonable priced craft brews.
