Thursday, 6:30pm.
Three adults, Harold, 35, Marguerite, 37, and Geraldine, 26. One child, Travejo, walk through the door.
The wait is short, just about fifteen minutes, when a both opens up. As the foursome is seated Harold looks around. The surroundings are as expected. An older diner, somewhat Claustrophobic, but relatively clean and bustling.
A few minutes go by before someone acknowledges them and tells them it won't be long
Ten minutes go by. The drinks ordered and received before the food order is given.
"Harold and I will have the Club For Two," Marguerite tells the waitress in a friendly voice. "And one of the halves will be with a poutine, the other with frites."
The waitress furiously begins to write down the order.
The child of nine years old excitedly exclaims "I'll have a hot dog!"
Everyone at the table laughs. "And yes," Marguerite chuckles, "a plain grilled hot dog for him."
The waitress continues to write on her note pad. She finishes her scribbles and turns to Geraldine. "Ma'am?"
Geraldine, indecisive, hurriedly says "oh, yes yes, I'll just have... I'll have the bacon poutine."
"And an all dressed steamed hot dog for me as well, thank you," says Harold.
The nameless waitress scribbles a few more things, reaches for the menus without saying a word and makes her way off.
The table begins to engage in small talk. Travejo, as many children his age, begins to play with anything in sight. The salt and pepper shakers become trucks on the highway, the sugar an airplane, and the utensils.... well, who knows.
After twenty minutes Geraldine looks around and says "Goodness, it seems like a long time since our order has been put through, hasn't it?"
Everyone nods and acknowledges that it has. Geraldine looks around and catches the eye of another waitress. After coming near Geraldine inquires about the order and the waitress looks around, calls for the initial waitress and walks off to talk to her.
A few minutes go by and the table receives:
Two half Club sandwiches, one with fries the other with a poutine
A grilled all dressed hot dog given to Travejo
In her hands are the other half Club sandwiches.
Marguerite corrects what was delivered saying the child ordered a PLAIN grilled hot dog and that the table was still missing a steamed all dressed hot dog.
The hot dog is picked up, taken away and the waitress disappears. With the other two half sandwiches. Never to be seen again.
Again, after another few minutes, the three adults catch the eye of the second waitress anew.
She is informed that the table is still missing the two hot dogs.
The waitress storms off, talking in a somewhat loud voice to the kitchen around the corner.
AGAIN, after another few minutes, Travejo is brought his plain grilled hot dog and Harold receives a GRILLED all dressed hot dog.
After the plate is put down before Harold all three adults stare in awe.
How can this be? How can it be that the order is wrong again?
At this time Harold, Marguerite, and Geraldine have all but finished their meals and no one has it in them to, yet again, correct the order placed on the table.
The two grilled hot dogs, one plain, one all dressed, were consumed in time and the foursome leave after having paid (in cash, they don't accept cards) and leaving a measly 10% tip for all the hassle.
The restaurant will not be frequented again.
Still, to this day, no one knows what happened to the other two half Club sammiches.
