Great crowd- nice bathroom!

A dive in kind of bar, not really big, cool atmosphere and vibes, affordable drinks, bartender was nice. Only took cash. Music could have been a bit better but really cool place to grab a drink or two!

Dive bars are my personal favorite and this place is exactly how I pictured it. It’s covered in stickers, license plates and memorabilia which I love to gawk at while I enjoy my well tequila on the rocks, a total dive bar type of drink. The female bartender was friendly and prompt and the crowd seemed nice and warming, I’m mean hey; we’re in a dive bar, no one acts better than anyone here which I adore. It’s smaller and linear but sits many between the bar stools and on the wall chairs. Bathrooms are typical in nyc dives, graffiti, stickers, and hand written messages. Definitely swing by here if you want to experience the village.

Cool dive bar for this part of town. It's long and narrow, with stickers galore to add to the atmosphere. Bartenders seem to be quite efficient in serving drinks, making for shorter wait times. Enjoyed it and would go back without hesitation.

Very good very friendly bar. Have been to the bar before heading to the High Line which is a close walk. Friendly atmosphere that you can meet with new people.

Cashonly dive bar in the West village. Usually fun bar tenders, small space, and lots of flare. They have a happy hour til 7 pm not exactly sure what's on it tho. Got a 7 dollar stella

A wonderful dive bar with cheap drinks. A bar where one can get house cognac for seven dollars is my kind of bar; no pretensions. The bartender named Christina is wonderful.

Definitely meets the criteria for dive bar except for the price of drinks. Prices were about the same as less divey bars in the area. Ambiance was no frills and tiny bathroom. A small tv for maybe a game or so, a jukebox. Just placement of the speakers can be loud depending on where you're sitting. The bartender was pretty chills, and no frills. Not my cup of tea but maybe it will be someone else's.

It was too hot to keep walking around so I let Yelp bring me to "dive bar" and it won. It is indeed a dive but there was a welcoming vibe this evening as I had a frosty adult beverage served by a busty and friendly bartender. I'm only giving one star because I have to leave some sort of star to post a review. Only come here if you want to be talked to like an animal by the bartender. I myself am a bartender so I don't speak to people in the service industry poorly ever. I know it can be a stressful environment. That being said, whoever was there around 2AM last night needs to rethink their career path. I get it, late at night when you want to go home and there's a lot of people talking to you it can be a nightmare, but part of the service industry thing is the service...? Groundbreaking, I know. If that's a big inconvenience for you maybe you should pick another field. And if this is an environment where you can't walk in without being a regular then post some signage that you're going to treat anybody who isn't like a farm animal.

Would give zero stars if possible. From the looks of other reviews this bar doesn't know how to hire a good bartender, since others had an issue with a different bartender than who I had to deal with last night. My friends and I had a horrendous experience with their male bartender on Thursday night. From the moment we entered he was hostile demanding that we decide immediately if we would all be on one tab or separate (I get it he wanted to get things moving but we had JUST entered and didnt even have a moment to decide what we wanted to drink). He continued to ignore us and when we did get served, he made heavily watered down drinks. At the end of the night he overcharged my friend and then argued with him about it and as we were exiting the bar he screamed obscenities at us. I will never be returned since this bartender is literally terrifying and horrible at his job!

I finally had the chance to check out this place since I was in the neighborhood. I was not impressed at all. First off, it was a sausage factory meaning no female customers. Supposedly they no longer have PBR and their cheapest drink is a $6 draft. Why come here when you can go to to coyote ugly for $3 PBRs? It had a dive bar atmosphere, but def not dive bar prices. I probably won't return since there are still a few much cheaper dive bar options in the city.

Erin was super sweet and kept the drinks flowing. If you love a good dive this is a textbook establishment.

There was a woman there deterring me enter. At first I thought nothing of it, but then she put her arm around the bouncer and said "you are not worthy to enter". Very odd experience once I stepped inside. I don't write reviews but this deserved one.

Had a great time, barmaid was amazing. Enjoyed St. Pattys day. A must try if in the area.

This place is cute, quaint, divey. The bartender acted disinterested in being there and came off as grumpy. It was busy tho, luckily found a spot at the bar.

"Hey, there's that bar where I got really trashed at with my friend a few years ago and then my wife got super pissed off at me for spending hours drinking there. Everything was so cheap though and it was so great." Me:"- woah. Just you don't need to say anything more. I'm sold." We were having brunch across the street and this led to impulsive decisions. Johnny's is the place that rich neighborhoods need where you can still get a $4 rolling rock, cheap shots, sit in the grime. It's tiny but also weirdly cozy and warm and has a good neighborhood vibe. The bartender was super friendly. There's a jukebox. Nice christmas decorations going on I guess. Really a hole in the wall and great dive bar.

I ADORE Johnnys! It quickly became my go to neighborhood bar when I moved to NYC. The drinks are strong and cheap. The atmosphere is an idyllic dive bar full of odds and ends decorating the place. It's dark and quaint and gets PACKED on the weekends - arrive early for some decent bar real estate, not a great place for large groups. Lots of people in the comments complaining about staff, but honestly - they're fine, if you're polite so are they. Also it's a dive, don't order anything stupid...stick to the basics, don't be annoying. AND you must try their famous beetle juice. It's like a pickle back but better.

Johnny's typically has one bartender working who will have difficulty remembering who is supposed to get served first. They also tend to run "promotions" posted on the walls but won't fulfill them when it's time to pay. Furthermore, they did not close out my tab for me and surprised me at the end with a bill that wasn't in line with the advertised prices. Only thing this place has going for it is its location. Would avoid Johnny's next time you're opting for a dive bar in the city.

You get what you give at Johnny's. I wasn't expecting anything amazing at this tiny dive bar... just a strong drink with low prices. I got the strong drink but still had to pay the Manhattan price. The bartender was very disengaged and almost came off as he'd rather be somewhere else than serving 30-something professionals. As someone visiting and wanting to learn more about the area, I simply asked him if he was Johnny (just to start conversation) and he replied "Johnny is dead." Point blank and serious. I was like ohh ok thanks. Maybe he is tired of people asking him that question? Regardless of the bartender, the atmosphere is gritty, reminding of me what the area must have been like back in the Punk days. Lots of graffiti, bumper stickers and urine/bleach odors. Nowadays it seems to be more popular with the 30 year old professionals living in their million dollar Village lofts looking for a cheap place to drink with friends. Also, they have a jukebox that will play songs for $1. Just became full with what you choose cause this crowd is judging you with their glares.

A true old school locals dive bar to kick back in and down a few cheap Rolling Rocks and a shot. The usual weirdos and on the edge hipster characters haunt this spot while viewing the hundred sketches or so of Burt Reynolds behind the bar. I kid you not. Smokey and the Bandit rules. Digital jukebox and the people here pick out decent tunes. Just a chill narrow kind of joint with all kinds of crap stuck on the wall behind the bar, some happy hour deals, and a nondescript red neon sign that just says "bar" hanging outside. Oh, and the bathroom is on-point in true graffiti style. I love dive bars.

My favorite bar ever!!! So much history! Have to visit every time I'm in NYC. A must if you love dive bars. Don't expect anything special but that's part of the charm!

Cool Dive bar off Greenwich Ave. About what you would expect from a dive. Kind of small narrow bar area with dim lighting, graffiti, that everything under the sun has been here type of smell to it. The bartender was really nice and attentive. Simple and to the point a stiff drink and a few shots are what the doctor ordered or "orders" at this place. Always refreshing to be able to come to a place like this and no be bombarded with the elitist prices you will find at other swanky bars in NYC. Would certainly post up frequently when in town again.

This is officially ONE OF THE TOP 3 favorite bars in the west village , i just love the aesthetic, it feels cozy , you feel the floor shaking under you while on the stool , from people's steps , and it's an interesting feeling! Perfect dive bar, great juke box and our bartender (Christina??) was great too! Small bar. Sign says minimum purchase to use credit card- can't remember if it's $15 or $20. Pistachios available for purchase. Show off your drawing skills and draw a pix of Burt Reynolds. You'll see they have a small collection on display- napkin as a canvass will suffice. Cheers!

Great dive bar in West Village. Service is quick and prices are reasonable. If you are into running the music then the AMI system is right for you. 10/10 every time.

$6 well whiskey. That is the correct amount for alcohol. I've been here when it's crazy busy and when it's dead and it's a seriously a great dive spot. The bouncer wasnt my favorite but that's ok! Wouldn't keep me away next time!

best bar in nyc. when i first moved to the city (pre covid), i would come here literally every night. eventually moved out of the w village and into gramercy park area but i still force my gf to make a stop with me whenever we are in the neighborhood! there's a certain comfort and nostalgia that johnny's offers that simply cannot be replicated. big cheers vibes-- go a few nights in a row and they'll greet you by name forever. 10/10

I love this little dump of a bar. I live in the neighborhood and I am surrounded by small plates and glasses of wine. Organic this and free range that. Sometimes, I just want cheap booze and some laughs with the guys in a relaxed environment. Johnny's is just north of 12th street on Greenwich Ave and is a lovely little hole in the wall. The service is friendly and they make your drinks with little fuss. I came here with a group of guys and we had a ball. There are always some strange characters, locals and other sorts that make the patrons of this place a hodge-podge of the neighborhood. The only downside to this place is that it is very small and it can be tough to move around when it gets busy.

What a hole in the wall! And i mean that in the nest way possible. I came here after a concert with a couple of buddies and had just the best damn time. We buckled down in the back near the jukebox, met some strangers and shared tons of drinks, stories and laughs. Definite dive for the local.

Chill Dive Driving thru Greenwich Village and we stumbled upon Johnny's. A pretty cool find. We stopped and grabbed a drink at this small dive bar. The place is dark and the bartender was very friendly. They always have a shot special everyday and 3 cheap draft beers which is nice find seeing your in NYC. An aside story is that a kid came with his friends for his 21st birthday and the bartender made sure that the birthday boy had the birthday house special a shot of tequila with milk. Yuck, but I thought it was a nice touch. Very down to earth spot. We'll be back. Thanks

Vaniya is amazing.. Ask her for impromptu cocktails.. She made me 'captain pirate' and it was really amazing (go ask for it. It has mango and pineapple !!!!!) Probably one of the best cocktail places in Manhattan.. Vaniya can make authentic cocktails as well as invent some.. It is a bit crowdy .. but if you love cocktails just go for it.. You will get good vibes, trust me on this! :-) This is your go to place on weekend night.

Kristina is the bomb! This place is a wonder if a dive bar. Not much to say except strong cheap drinks. $8 mezcal. $4.59 rolling rock drafts... fall in love with Johnny's!

Awesome dive bar. Rolling rock for $3, and shots of the day for $3.50. The place is quite small, so don't try to come here with a big group, but definitely worth stopping by with a friend or two to catch up and pregame for a night out. The bartender was awesome, and always noticed when our drinks were getting low. Just a friendly fun atmosphere. Can't ask for more!

After a night At johnny's you feel like you can kick a whole in the sky. Quintessential nyc dive bar. Lost more brain cells here than can be counted.

Let me start by saying Great job with the new Bartender on Wednesday nights Johnnys. She's fun, attentive, witty & sober. So I want to give ya'll a big thumbs up on the change. Outside of Mark she's probably the best bartender at Johnnys. Far better then the the drunk Australian that used to work there. And more pleasant than the miserable, judgemental, bitter and lifeless scarecrow Vonya who works on Thursday nights. She not only complains about working...She complains about you asking for a drink when she's talking about her life to the 5 customers that will listen. So here's my run down; Best Bartenders; Mark #1 Smart, witty & attentive! New Girl #2 (Red Head) Cute, bubbly and fun Amy #3 Straight up, stern, helpful Non judgemental Worst Bartenders (No life skills, job skills or communication skills)....Stiluck bartending. Taylor #0 Rude, Drunk, Bratty, argumentative (Avoid) Vonya #000 The over 40, anorexic, judgemental, recluse, Space Cadet. (Avoid) (Obviously doesn't care for her job or customer service) Overall great place with great prices. Just avoid the 2 idiots

Loved loved loved this dive bar! The bartenders were super nice and even gave me a birthday drink! I also asked if they knew what a flaming Lamborghini was and they said no but was more than happy to make my friends the drink so that they could try it for the first time. Definitely a chill place to be if you're just wanting to drink a little or pregame for somewhere.

My group of 10 girls came and visited New York trying to have a good time. We bought multiple drinks at this bar and payed money to play songs on the juke box and the bartender walked to us after we bought our drinks and the bartender told us " to get the FUCK out of here" because we were singing to the song we payed for. If anyone is visiting here and wants to listen to music and socialize this is not the place for you. I would NOT recommend to anyone. The atmosphere is very boring and needs some work done on the place. I went to the restroom and there were bugs everywhere and very dirty and not clean. Worst bar I've ever been too.

This place is absolute pants. The rude bar man was off his head, picked his nose, teeth and then almost fell over. Asked whether he was Johnny he said he was stone dead ! (Johnny ) Not an experience I'd like to repeat.

Epitome and definition of a dive bar - which is perfect sometimes. Stopped in here on Saturday afternoon after having brunch a few blocks away, we were just leaving brunch and walking to meet some friends a little past this and stopped in here for a drink before meeting up with them. Grabbed a nice, cheap beer. Good selections on tap and bartender was friendly. For a dive bar, it is exactly what you expect!

Johnny's is a Janus dive. On one face, you get the grungy, cheap, hard liquor bar that's at death's door with a macho jukebox playing songs of mourning. On the other face, you've got a tender so intent on keeping the peace, she quelled the rumblings of a drunken douche who saw a step to order as a threat to his woman's seat. Try a shot of the day, plunk a few Georges to rock your fellow barflies and raise your glass to Johnny's - the local that inspired the term "a Janus dive."

I got straight hustled here. A "local" from Brooklyn got friendly, then made a casual bet that we wouldn't strike up a conversation with a certain group... Next thing I know they are pushing me up outside, threatening me with "you made a bet, where's your money" and "we will get you to pay somehow"... Meanwhile he management didn't want to interfere at all.... I left and got a car as fast as I can, but I would encourage you to avoid it altogether

Total dive bar, but great place. Very small location perfect for grabbing a couple of drinks. The bartender will start singing if you do not play music in the juke box. The customers as well as employees are super welcoming and open to socializing or letting you kind your own business.

When I am in Manhattan, this is one of my bars of choice. I have been here quite a few times when I am in the area. This is a great and cozy place to have a drink or two and have a good time. I come here either during the afternoon or early evening hour. My only major complaint is the sign outside. Of the many years that I have been familiar with this place, the sign only says "BAR". It is obvious that the word "JOHNNY'S" was once placed on top of the sign. They ought to bring back the word "JOHNNY'S". I think the missing word makes this place harder to find for those who are not familiar with New York City or the bar scene. Nonetheless, this is a cozy and wonderful atmosphere for those who want to sit down, relax, and have a drink or two. The atmosphere is simple, yet highly decorated. The collage of pictures behind the bar give this place an interesting ambiance. The bar also has a slight old-fashioned ambiance to it, but I would not go as far as calling the atmosphere "nostalgic". I would more describe it as appearing like the owner wants to preserve the original interior as much as he/ she/ they can. The employees appear to do a great job at keeping everything clean and organized. For the most part, I have not had any major problems with messes or clutter. Therefore, I feel comfortable walking around and sitting here. The only thing about the cleanliness that needs work is their bathrooms. There have been moments when I have walked into one of them, and it looked like it had been neglected by the employees all day. The employees are always friendly and resourceful. They are also pleasant to be around. I have been able to strike a good conversation with some of them during their slow times. Some of them have also been helpful when being asked about new sights to see and news about the Manhattan gay scene. Mostly, when I order a drink, I switch between the vodka cranberry and the screw driver. Sometimes, I will switch it up. Regardless, the drinks are always served to me in a timely manner, and they taste delicious. The bartenders appear knowledgeable of alcoholic beverages. When I am in New York City and want to check out a good bar, I will continue coming here. I feel like I can count on them for a fun time. I hope that management and ownership reads this review and takes into consideration my thoughts about the outside sign.

This is about as closed it comes in the West Village to a dive bar. The decor is right, with an old school cash register, various memorabilia, a jukebox operated by the bartender who has the authority to "veto" any selection, and a tap that pours $3.50 Coors Lights (if you love your wallet more than good-tasting beers) as well as Guinness, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, etc. The $5-6 for a pint of these is not particularly cheap, but it's all relative to the nabe. They have daily specials and fishy-sounding shots for $3.50 that you might want to try. The crowd is very laid-back, with the few seats (maybe 15 tops) taken up by regulars and friends. I would definitely make it a mainstay if I lived nearby.

The bartender here was highly disrespectful to me. The bartender screamed at me and ordered me and my friends out of the bar claiming we didn't tip her when we very evidently tipped her over 20%. Several customers and other patrons asked us what was going on and questioned her behavior. If you want to be disrespected come here.

Bartender is super friendly and heavy handed when pouring the drinks. That's always a plus and bonus the drinks are very reasonably priced. It's a must to check out. Love all the unique art decor!!!

Johnny's Bar is awesome. I found it on - where else? - Yelp while staying in the area overnight, & it turned out to be just what I was looking for - a solid dive full of interesting people & mostly-cheap beer. Our bartender was incredibly friendly, a peppy blonde who was working the bar solo but totally rocking it. We found seats at the end of the bar & she always served us quickly, always remembered our orders but gave us room to change our minds, & even set up little signs around the bar as the night wore on that read "Don't forget to take your card!" to help drunkies remember to collect their belonging. We met some great folks, which wasn't something we'd intended but sort of emerged organically when we ended up sitting near a couple from Iceland & Denmark & chatted with them about... mandolin stores in the city? Seriously, they were great & the whole thing was great &, yes, GREAT. We stayed until about 1:15. When we closed out, the bartender told us she'd given us each a drink on the house for being friendly; unsurprisingly, we tipped her big. I'd definitely go back. Don't expect any great shakes - this is a dive bar, after all - but it's a damn good dive bar!

Sat waiting patiently for a beer bar tender was a nasty blond woman that ignored me and served a man who had walked in after me. I ordered and she told me the price before serving me. When I rolled my eyes like WTF? She then pours out the beer and waved to me to leave

As if the neon red sign outside that reads "BAR" wasn't enough motivation we stumbled into this bar on Christmas Day and had ourselves a blast. Diverse clientele ranging from Steve the Salad (youtube it), the gaggle of Texans exploring NYC after one too many drinks, the quiet French men, along with the 50+ gray haired men ready to have a drink. Well Drinks at $5- full selection of liquor. Music seemed to just be a juke box, i.e. when no one fed the machine- the bar was quiet- which was awkward at times, but at least you know you're song will actually be played. All in all we had a great time and Tina our bartender was great. but beware, don't get on her bad side because we did see her literally throw 2 Texans out of the bar.

Went there on a Saturday night for a drink. Ambience: Small, a bit dirty and divey. Crowd was mostly in their 20s. Prices: Cheap and cheap! Service: Good; the bartender was a bit quirky but nice. Overall, this is the place you come to have a drink before going somewhere else.
