Johnny’s Grill Review - Logan Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Change is scary. We get comfortable in our ways, whether it’s the usual morning bowl of Cookie Crisp cereal for breakfast or the usual nighttime bowl of Cookie Crisp cereal before bed. So we can sympathize with the people who were emotionally unprepared for the changes at Johnny’s Grill. But change can be good. Johnny’s Grill was a no frills neighborhood diner in Logan Square for a long time. But that version of Johnny’s Grill no longer exists. There’s a new owner, a new menu, an expansion into a second room that used to be a flower shop, and a new “Mezcalaria” bar in the flower shop space. But even with the changes, the diner style, red counter, and name “Johnny’s Grill” are the same, so on some level the old and new have come together as one. So Johnny’s is new, but not totally new. You might not be able to get a meal for $6 anymore, but the food is better and still diner-eqsue, if a little more upscale. There’s an Irish twist, which means items like an Irish breakfast and fish ’n chips, as well as standards like a burger or turkey club. And the dishes tend to have a sophisticated twist - instead of generic pancakes, they are cornmeal pancakes with a homemade blueberry compote and whipped cream. Go solo or with another person to sit at the counter like you would treat any diner, or go with a small group to grab a table on the flower shop side. At 5pm every night, the flower shop bar officially becomes Mezcaleria Las Flores. Translated not so literally, it means a bar within Johnny’s focused on mezcal cocktails. And it’s the cocktail bar, combined with the more elevated food, that make Johnny’s more useful than just an old greasy spoon. Yes, greasy diner’s are great, but they serve a limited purpose, and Johnny’s is now more useful than that. In addition to going for a simple breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you can go hang over cocktails at night and still order Johnny’s food. Change is good. There’s a reason we no longer eat Cookie Crisp every day of our lives. Food Rundown Housemade Pop-Tart A good idea to start with whatever pop-tart is fresh that day, particularly if you have someone to share it with. Johnny Cakes Cornmeal buttermilk pancakes with blueberry compote, whipped cream, and maple syrup. It’s a serious stack, and we like the cornmeal base. Make sure to get a bit of blueberry and whipped cream in every bite. Avocado Toast We personally like more of a spreadable avocado toast version, but this works if you want something light. Avocado on toast with almond, carrot, and radish. Cured Salmon Benedict Salmon benedict is never a bad idea. The breakfast potatoes are also great. Irish Breakfast We get an Irish breakfast isn’t for everyone, but man does it do the trick when we want something meaty and greasy. Translation - it’s ideal for hangovers. Sausage, back bacon (basically Canadian bacon), white and black pudding (more variations of sausage), mushrooms, tomato, two fried eggs, and toast. Irish Bacon Bap We know this is a traditional thing, but this sandwich doesn’t do it for us. It’s basically Canadian bacon, giardiniera, and swiss on a flimsy roll. Maybe if you added an egg and called it a breakfast sandwich we’d be more into it. Double Cheeseburger Damn it feels good to be a gangster. A real gangster-ss burger with sharp cheddar, dijonaise, pickles, and onion. Fish ’N Chips Fresh catch of the day with fries, tartar, and lemon. The fish itself isn’t overly fried, but obviously there’s a lot of fried stuff going on. Beignets Want a little dessert or just something to go with your coffee? This is the move. Mezcal Cocktails If you go at night for a drink, you obviously need to try one of the mezcal focused cocktails." - Sam Faye

Lunchtime is a busy time here. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich that was served on lightly toasted bread with a slice of tomato and a leaf of lettuce. A pleasant surprise was the poppy seeds added to the mix. The basket comes with french fries and is reasonably priced. Miss Kenzie and Tucker were on top of their game.

Discovered this place on the way back to Coffee County from a day in Savannah. I enjoyed the generous portion of pulled pork with tasty potato salad and coleslaw. My wife had the fried chicken with glazed sweet carrots and green beans seasoned with bacon. Service was friendly and relaxed. Restaurant was very clean and all food was served cooked to order and hot. We definitely recommend!

Google
Wonderful place, friendly staff, good food. The place is clean and bright. The place itself doesn't have much of a theme or personality, but the food is what it is all about. We had a chicken wrap, a 2 piece chicken dinner with turnip greens and grilled cheese with chili. The chili is a sweet chili, not hot, which is what I like. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient!

I went into the lobby to checkout the spot. The place looked clean, the waitress was writing the menu on the dry erase board. It took her at least 10 mins to finish the board, then she came over to serve me. I think there customer service could be better. As for the food... the burger was made fresh to order so that took about 15-20 mins (I'll wait for a good burger) but the fries where cold and over cooked. I ordered a 32oz Sprite, but got mostly ice 🙁. Then there was the lemon cake. It looked good, but there a few mushy spots in the cake that made me not eat it. Also, my ticket was around $17-$20. Although, the burger was good, I feel like I spent too much money to receive poor customer service and not eat most of my food. Hopefully, they'll fix these issues before I go back.

Food was great, service was really good, they were busy so I didn't expect much. It is decorated kinda rustic, and it is super clean.

Yelp
The extra star is for the service but the food leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered the buffalo ranch chicken sandwich for carry out. It comes with fries and I ordered an additional side of cole slaw. I thought it was going to be similar to the chicken sandwich at Zaxby it was a big flop. The sourdough was dripping with grease, the chicken was dry and the cole slaw was bland. I had to go back for my fries bc they forgot to include it in my order and they were so stale and bland I wish I didn't go back for them bc I was really disappointed. I used to eat here all the time bc i worked in the area years ago (around 2020/2021) and they were actually pretty good. Not sure what's happened or maybe just a bad day...

Yelp
A solid lunch and dinner spot when visiting the Pembroke area. Lots of traditional foods. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Heads up, their location is now 175 East Bacon in a fairly new, free standing location. The address on Yelp is incorrect. It's obvious this casual dining restaurant is the lunchtime stop of Pembroke locals. They have daily specials, sandwiches, burgers, plenty of vegetable sides @$1-$4, chicken fingers, salads, quesadillas and a kids menu. I opted for the St. Patrick's special of Shepherds Pie which was served piping hot!Ground beef was the base of this hearty dish. The waitress was efficient, but I wish she had explained the Shepherds Pie was smothered and cover with mashed potatoes. I would have chosen a side other than mashed potatoes. The fried okra was steamy hot, crunchy and delish. Pembroke is fortunate to have this locally owned restaurant serving a tasty variety of eats.

Yelp
This was a great quick stop! Their Mac Daddy bites (fried Mac & cheese) were creamy and delicious, and their buffalo chicken sandwich was awesome. food came out lightning fast and the staff were super attentive and helpful. From the Styrofoam cups to the homemade ranch dressing, this place is about as low-key and local as it gets. Highly recommend!

Good affordable food and great service. I had the double cheeseburger (it's huge!) my son had the pizza. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
Simple. That is the one word that perfectly describes Johnny's Grill. The restaurant looks like a school cafeteria. The menus are pieces of paper with a list of food items written by hand. This isn't a place where you go to sit down and have a nice a meal. This is the place where you go when you need to quick and cheap fuel before going about your business. Don't come here expecting fine dining. I ordered a three-item plate with chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and peach cobbler. The chicken fried steak tasted like a T.V. dinner, the green beans were clearly canned, and the mashed potatoes were made from potato flakes. However, the gravy on the steak was amazing, I really don't mind canned green beans, and even the potatoes had a nice brown gravy on top, masking the bland potatoes. The peach cobbler I can't forgive though. When I'm in Georgia I expect good quality peach cobbler, no matter where I go. The cobbler at Johnny's looked like they took it from the same T.V. dinner that they got the steak from. It didn't taste like much and looked like mush. As I mentioned before, Johnny's is meant more for those who need a refuel than those seeking higher quality food.

Yelp
I ordered a grilled chicken salad without tomato, cheese, or croutons (due to allergies). The salad consisted of lettuce and spinach, with no other vegetables, and there was only a handful of the greens. There was about a half of a chicken breast for the grilled chicken. Highway robbery at $8! I won't recommend this place nor will I come back. They waitress was not pleasant and never came back to the table to ask how things were.

Love the cheap prices. All for a good, home-cooked meal! Our family loves Johnny's, especially their delivery!!

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised!!! After reading the reviews (all 4 of them) we were hesitant of eating here. I'm glad we did. I ordered the hamburger steak with onion and gravy and my wife ordered the fried shrimp basket. The food was good, not going to write home about it but good. Great little spot to stop in and get lunch. The staff was extremely helpful, professional, and polite. Every waitress that was working stopped in and checked on us. The dinning room was full! Attentive and great local spot. We'd eat here again!

Yelp
Took 10 plus minutes for anyone to even come see us to take our drink order. Once we finally got them they didn't even have enough menus for a party of 4 so we had to share. I guess they ran out of paper when they printed them off. After we ordered our food and 45 minutes passed we decided to cut our losses and left $5 on the table for the drinks and left. If your not prepared to provide at least halfway decent service don't open until you are. Several people around us were fussing after we ordered our food about the slow service and wanting refills. Sad part is 5 minutes before we left they finally got their refills!! We wont be back.

Yelp
Took 35 min for the food to be cooked which wasn't a problem, until we got home and ate our food. The chicken wings my parents got were way over cooked, dry, and bland. My chicken was bland as well, feels like there isn't any seasoning at all. I wouldn't have minded the 35 min If the food had tasted well. We will not be going back.

Yelp
I've heard good things about Johnny's for years and have been excited to try it. For my wife's birthday she decided that that's what she wanted. We ordered the food to go and it was pathetic. The seafood trio was one piece of fish that was falling apart because of the grease. And we got double shrimp... 7 pieces. The fries were cold and stale. And when we called to let them know they were rude And defensive. The female on the phone cared more about try to prove my wife wrong than a simple apology. It was a horrible experience and the food was not worth the price. It was $40 for two seafood trios. The McDonalds in pembroke serves better food for a better price. To say the experience was disappointing is an understatement. If you want good food for a good price go to a fast food restaurant. This place steals your money and serves you their scraps. I will never eat there again and will try to save others from wasting their hard earned money at this schizter establishment. Unfortunately I couldn't put 0 stars as a review. And I'm pretty sure the inmates at the jail across the street eat better food than what's served at Johnny's. Sandra's seafood is a little further away, serves better food and has a better price. the point is treat this place like it is ground zero for COVID and stay away.

Yelp
The first time I ate here, it was great. Fantastic device, very quick, and everything was perfect. Second time I ate here, my food food was not made correctly, and my fries were burnt. Today, I ate here and the service was terrible, the staff was acting like zombies and didn't seem to care that my food was sloppily made, way too spicy, and I couldn't even eat it.
