John's Fish Market & Sandy's Fish and Chips

We came here after reading a positive review from our airbnb, sadly it was disappointing. The fish and chips though "looked good" were not seasoned well. Also, when I bit down into my clam cake I felt the horrible grit and pain of SAND! It was clear the clams were not properly cleaned before meaking the cakes. Not to mention, the clams were too hard to chew and I was forced to spit them out! I'm sad because this was our first official meal on the island and it was a complete miss. I was also disappointed with their response to me sharing that there was sand in the clam cakes. "We are sorry about that," is not sufficient considering the amount of food we purchased. There was no offer of a refund on that item or even a discount. The least they could have done was given us some free ice cream, since that appears to be the only thing people pulled up for. I guess we should have known something was up when NONE of the people who drove up went inside for food. Instead, they went to the walk up window, which is for ice cream only, — $3/$6 respectively for a small and large cone. This is probably the best thing they offer and the cheapest I've seen.

They say one bite and you'll be hooked. and they're correct in saying that. All the food is freshly prepared to order and the freshness of the seafood can be tasted in everything we ordered. My wife had the Fried sole plate. I had the seared tuna sandwich with wasabi mayo which had an amazing cut of tuna. My daughter had the kids fish and chips which was made of cod and included a small toy shark finger puppet.

Great spot! Fresh seafood...a little walk from the port but great food. Nice local spot. Fish sandwich, fish and chips and burgers were all very good. Friendly service and welcoming place. Would recommend!

Best place to get fresh seafood or to stop by for a quick bite or ice cream. Selections for the pescatarians and meat eaters. All kinds of specialty items that you don't see anywhere else. Staff are wonderful. What The Net used to be like.

Checks hours on website because may not be accurate on google. Fish was light and flavorful. Really enjoyed our lunch (had flounder and fish sandwich - not too heavy, right breading). Came back later for fish to cook for dinner at home.

Great selection of fish, and their crab cakes are delicious! We got the grilled tuna sandwich and it was had a generous amount of fish. This was the best fish sandwich I've had in a long time, especially for only 11.50!

Ok, so I’ve had lobster rolls all over MV and Cape Cod. Sandy’s lobster roll is by far the best! No fillers, perfectly toasted bun with an abundance of lobster! I may or may not have had 5 in my 15 days this year. And probably just as many last summer. Today I tried The Obama burger! I will say, Michelle would probably not approve but I did! Every single bite was perfect! Thank you to all the employees. Samantha is amazing! The food is all homemade, not frozen and heated. They are super friendly even when others are not. Be kind, people. See you next year, ladies.

The honey smoked mussels were the best thing I ate on the island. Unforgettable and worth a trip!! Also the service was the friendliest I had of the seafood shops I went to. Overall a fantastic experience and I would recommend everyone go here.

Nothing but good things to say about John's. Ordered steamed lobsters to go, and they were perfect. They were cracked and packaged in beautiful to go containers. Price was reasonable and service was friendly. Brought the containers back next day and has delicious fish and chips from Sandy's (attached takeout joint). This will be our go to fishmonger on the Vineyard!

BEST LOBSTER ROLL ON THE ISLAND!! Mayo based lobster salad literally so good I could eat it every day. Not pictured the French fries which are SO GOOD. Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this place. Wasn't in the mood for something greasy and ended up here and it was soooo good. The chowder is amazing,chicken tenders were delicious and some of the best I've had in a long time, and my husband could not stop raving g about the chicken sandwich. He went all "compliments to the chef" mode

Nothing but good things to say about this place! Came here with my wife for lunch and got clam chowder, a chicken sandwich, and tenders and fries. It was incredible! One of the best chicken sandwiches I've had in my life! Everything was so tasty and very reasonably priced for here. Will be coming back soon!

Great variety of local catch, decent pricing for the island, helpful and accommodating service, nice display and clear pricing. All but missing at the popular tourist traps in Menemsha ( see our previous reviews of them). Only down side for us is they close early in the bumper season: Sep 28 was their last day.

Fresh and tasty seafood. Staff will accommodate requests. The sandwiches and sides are always tasty and the spreads are just right fir guests or Kate night mucking!

This place rules! Absolutely gorgeous fresh fish at reasonable prices, plus some original creations like the shrimp spring rolls, which were delicious. We'll be back!!

5 out of 5! The oldest family owned fish market on the island. We finished off our 3 day weekend at this lovely fish market for oysters on the half shell as we awaited our ferry back home. FYI this place is less than half mile from VH terminal, great place to grab eats while killing some time. The oysters were fresh, local, sweet and briny . The owner and staff were so lovely and hospitable. Definitely recommend the soft serve ice cream for desert! A must if you're tired of the Edgartown up-charge for local oysters.

I ordered a pound of cooked lobster meat here. It wasn't cheap, and when I opened the package just three refrigerated hours later, the meat stunk to high heaven and was spoiled. Needless to say, this ruined my dinner, since the store was already closed and I couldn't go back and return/exchange it. The employee who helped me at the counter there was unfriendly and stared at me like I was from another planet. The store is NOT WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, as there isn't enough room for a wheelchair to enter and maneuver easily up and down the very narrow passage along the counter. I had to ask for special assistance to buy that spoiled lobster. I wouldn't go back here again. I'll stick to the Net Result, which is five minutes away and has never sold me spoiled seafood.

Great folks, good food, excellent value. We ate at the net result earlier this week it was good, but very, very high as to cost. Felt johns was as good or better, especially the swordfish and fried oysters, but the cost was much more in line. Don't miss this place as is a bit off the beaten trail.

Best fried shrimp ever, cooked to order, got it three times in one week, all fish were superb, our go to place while on vacation. The coleslaw was exceptional as well, attention to detail obvious in everything they do. Try the best on the island!

This is my go to, always! I always see familiar faces,and they never hesitate to go out of their way to accommodate my requests. The seafood is top notch and very responsibly sourced, unlike some other fish markets. The fish fry is on point, and Chef O whips up a mean noodle dish! There is something for everyone at John's!

One of the best fish markets i have been too (altough ive heard Larsens is pretty great too). the fish is all displayed beautifully and the people working are friendly and know a lot about what they are selling. they have everything from jumbo sea scallops, to blue fish, to you name it. if youre on island and dont feel like going out, this is a great place to pick up some fresh seafood and have a tasty meal at your house.

My favorite place to get fresh fish, lobster salad and other seafood treats. Everyone is friendly and gives good advice from the fish to buy and how to cook it. John's is my first stop for my seafood needs every summer when visiting the Vineyard. :)

This is hands down the best fish market on the Vineyard. We have been going here for over 20 years, and have always gotten the best and freshest fish. It isn't the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. We miss Sandy, but are so happy that a new generation of her family has taken on this great business. See you this summer!

Now open with a LOT of new specials. Tried new chowder recipe, fried little necks and cheeseybites all are delicious. I have always loved their coleslaw, I have had many and none can compare with the taste or freshness. There are so many things to choose from, they now have Johns Giant fish and beef burgers on a brioche roll, to die for. Then there is the lobster roll, all meat and NO fillers it is the BOMB. A must visit on Martha's Vineyard. Corner of Martin Road and state Road.

Best fish market on the island. Puts The Net Result to shame. Fish is fresh, fresh, fresh. Will cook lobsters for you with day's notice. Lobster rolls, fried fish, and clams also available to go or eat outside. Smoked bluefish is to die for.

Live on the island and go to John's frequently. Went the other day and ordered the scallop plate and a burger. My wife got extremely ill from the burger to the point she ended up in the ER. I called John's as a courtesy just to let them know they might want to check to see if something spoiled because sometimes that stuff happens. I wasn't mad or accusatory and the response I got was even worse thathe burger. The man who answered the phone first replied to me and I quote"no f$&@ing way she got sick here" then the lady who got on the phone told me she had been in business for 20 years and never ever served anything bad. Secondly, went there two weeks before this incident and bought a dozen cherry stones, two of the 12 were rotten and still gave them them a chance again. No humility at Johns, no fault at Johns and now no more of my business at Johns. And again I live on the island and know LOTS of people who will hear this story. All would be fine if they just said sorry that happened sir, we will look into it and please come in for a complimentary plate.

The fried shrimp were so good that I ate the first order in the parking lot and returned for a second. The best!

We visit Martha's Vineyard every year and we eat here at least 4 out of the 7 days we spend on the island. The seafood is so fresh and the prices are just right. You can't go wrong whether you're ordering seafood to cook at home or something cooked in their kitchen.

For years I have done biz here but not willing to deal with grumpy staff onsite. Island life is meant to b pleasurable and I like to b met with a smile and by someone eager 4 my biz. Encouraging others to buy at NET RESULT.

If you like the lobster of your Lobster Roll swimming in a flavorless white binder.. Well then this place is for you.

Staff was helpful. Halibut was fresh. Crab cakes were delicious.

Great fish market. I think it kind of lives in the shadow of Net Result, but it also has solid fresh seafood and I think that their fish and chips is much better. It doesn't have a great dine-in option, as there are only two or so tables set up outside.

John's Fish Market and Sandy's has one of the top two Lobster Rolls on the Island of Martha's Vineyard. (Grace Church on Friday Night makes a killer one too). I'm told that the secret is the brand of Mayo, but it could be the abundance of lobster, no fillers, and amazingly fresh. Also fantastic is the flash fried calamari, which is my guilty pleasure. Staff is great, fish selection is fresh and beautifully displayed. Cary out salads and other items make my life simple. I only wish they had a public restroom.....
