Top 10 Triangle Dive Bars for a Beer and a Shot

"Located in the old Office Tavern space, Johnson Street Yacht Club brings an elevated dive bar experience to downtown Raleigh — equipped with an adult slide. Note: there are rules and you can’t drink and slide. The website is quirky, noting “We’ve got booze. We take credit cards but we don’t take no shit. Behave yourself. Salty women welcome. Triflers need not apply.” There’s ample outdoor seating plus fun rotating cocktails (a frozen Dark ‘N’ Stormy, anyone?) — and an ever-changing, random food menu." - Jenn Rice

Yelp
JSYC was a fun time. The outdoor area was the only part open when we visited so I'll be interested to return and check out the inside once it reopens. My husband and I both had a Blue Moon. It was not clear on what their liquor options were since there wasn't a menu so I'm assuming it's your standard, easy to make drinks. This spot definitely gave us lake/beach vibes. Before you leave or during your visit, you can take a ride down the slide. Enjoy.

Yelp
Located in the old Office Tavern space, the new Johnson Street Yacht Club has elevated the bar experience from its predecessor but not too much. With a new patio up front hidden from the street by a privacy wall, Johnson Street Yacht Club is really a clean, dive bar complete with pool table, juke box and pinball machine. The crowd is pretty hipster and chill, the drinks and beers (cans only) are simple but hit the spot. And yes, the Yacht Rock! I didn't know what that was but prepared to be soothed by soft, 70's and 80's pop rock. You'll either love Johnson Street Yacht Club or not love it. But it works for me as a local, we needed something like JSYC since the Flash House closed down...

Yelp
Definitely would not recommend this place. Was very excited after reading the history of this bar to go here and visit. They did not have a very common alcohol that we drink. We're not interested in providing a different kind of alcohol. We're not interested in any other music other than "female songwriters". Bartender was very very rude and unfriendly she was horrible. The vibe was very much either our way or no way not good for customers who are willing to spend a lot of money. Have watched this bar over the past month and can tell why it's always empty horrible horrible customer service

Yelp
Would not recommend this place to anyone. Both older female and short bald wanna be buff but fat guy bartender last night were rude/aggressive as can be. I ordered a Long Island. Watched the female bartender make it. Probably less than ounce of liquor in the whole drink when it's supposed to be 2.5 ounces. When I tried it. It was terrible so I had all my friends try it and they all said tasted like just sour mix. So I asked the bartender to add a little more liquor in there, she did... with attitude(without telling me there would be a charge). I understand LIT is a complicated to make so I took at as ok maybe not many people order this... here's where the reason for the 1 star .... Got my receipt and I was charged for two drinks. I asked why the response I got was "well you asked me to add more liquor" so I replied yes because it was not made properly. I was talking very calm and trying to be respectful and essentially got her to admit that she doesn't know how much liquor goes into an LIT. Once that happened she got real rude and this well this is how this drink is made here.. other wanna be bartender bald short guy got very aggressive telling me to get the fuck out of here. And all I was looking to get out of this is not charged for a second drink I never ordered. What a great experience to start the year with. Back to original point go to any other bar but this one people rude employees who can't make simple drinks.

Yelp
Doesn't look like anyone's reviewed since COVID! Came for the slide. Did not disappoint (SUPER steep/fast descent, pro tip, don't put your feet down to try and stop your momentum at the bottom; you will automatically stop without flying out bc ~gravity~). Love this bar. They've updated their bar to a giant two-level outdoor patio. Very chill with hammock chairs, adirondacks, picnic tables, roofed outdoor downstairs. Fully outdoors, including the bar (excluding the bathrooms). The indoor area (pool table and some other stuff from the indoor pics on this Yelp page) is closed during COVID, but seriously the two-level patio is more than enough to have a good time. A group of friends and I met safely for the first time in years (could have rain or shine, here) since COVID last night. It was the perfect vibe! We weren't sure if they'd closed or what the space was like before going down since there weren't any updated pics of the patio space (you're welcome ) and their phone line is literally an endless Hall and Oats call tree, but it was a great gamble that could not have worked out better!

Yelp
If you like piña coladas... no, but really, if you do, you gotta ask Sandra to make you her special "tropical drink." It's like a piña colada but she uses coconut milk which gives it a creamy and mild quality and adds electrolytes without it being sickeningly sweet. My friends and I each got one and loved it. We also kept getting asked about it by people around us who ended up ordering it, too!

Yelp
I LOVE this bar. I, as a female, feel safe alone and love the bartenders. Also, they have a slide!!!!

Yelp
I have been to this bar a few times before my experience yesterday and always had a good time but yesterday was probably the worst bar experience of my entire life. We were just hanging out having a good time and this one bartender was abrasive from the start. We were playing on the slide did not know it was closed and after apologizing for not knowing it was closed she continued to berate us about it. She was so mad we were giving her money. We also wanted to watch golf but she initially said "no" to golf because the news was coming on and who wants to watch the news at a bar, you go to bar to escape the news. Also the music selection on the touch tunes is very limited. Used to be a fun bar to hang out at but now I guess not anymore.

Yelp
Gritty atmosphere but the music here is whack. I paid $5 for the juke box and apparently they only play female singer song writers. All about the females but they take your money for music and don't even tell you you can't play ANY male musicians. If you're a guy and enjoy being castrated musically, this is your bar.

Yelp
Johnson Street Yacht Club a tiny place away from the hustle/bustle of Glenwood Ave. There's a small bar with a pool table and a jukebox inside. Outside there's a patio area with chairs/tables to chill/hangout at. Definitely a chill vibe to the place and nothing pretentious at all. Just a cool local place to go hang out and drink a few beers. If you like dive bars, this will be a great local hangout spot for you. If not, walk a few blocks over to some less simplistic places like C Grace or Clockwork :)

Yelp
There's no burger but other than that it's pretty solid idk, Bachelor on Monday's but they'll let me watch NC State games in the corner that nobody else cares about, sometimes Beren will throw Tombstone on one of the TV's and it'll make me stay 3 hours longer than I planned on, 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Yacht Club is the dive bar that Glenwood has been missing. Chill vibes, a pool table, patio, and easy drinks. They kept a lot of the original Office Tavern charm and memorabilia, with the bonus of liquor and they ability to take credit cards. It's the dive-y spot we've all been waiting for.

Yelp
Bar is cool but weird exclusive scene. We just went to hang out tonight with a bunch of old school friends. Were playing pool having a great time. Then...a guy who claimed "he worked there" thought he could kick us off the table and not play the winners of the previous game. We all know that ain't how it works. Staff just looked the other way. If you aren't an "insider" just avoid this pace.
