Johnson's Backyard Garden (Packing Shed and Farm Office)

We always make sure to stop by at stock up some fresh veggies from JBG at the farmers market in Waco. A friend introduced me to them and I am glad. Sometimes I think that their veggies are better than what you find from the grocery store. I like the fact that they carry so many unique veggies as well. The produce is locally grown, it is such a great feeling to support our local farmers.

I get their CSA's weekly and have loved it! It is so nice getting fresh vegetables each week and you can either be surprised or go on-line and customize your box. Mine are delivered to their Running Rope location and I've never had any issues with a pick-up. Though, putting some foods such as melons in the shade would be helpful on hot days. Definitely love learning about more veggies and watching them change with the seasons.

I've been a CSA member for over a year and couldn't be happier. The quality is always great and a good variety. It's gotten me to start eating a bunch of different types of veggies that I never would have otherwise. I love knowing that my food is being grown locally and sustainably by cool people!

I used to love this farm.....for years. We decided a few weeks ago to support them by joining their CSA program. Our past two deliveries were atrocious. I took pictures of the second delivery and am emailing them. We received several more carrot tops than carrots. Our three eggplants were riddled with worm holes. Two of our zucchini were about 14-15 inches long.....and if you don't know.... large zucchini ( or any squash for that matter) are tough and the flavor is lackluster. We're so disappointed. Is JBG growing too quicky? Have they lost sight of their customers? Are their choices based on greed? Their new lack of quality control is very very apparent. Get it together, guys.

Been member of CSA for about a year and a half now. Writing this review because the quality of the boxes have recently gone down during the Covid crisis. Been receiving greens what-not already going bad. Besides the Covid crisis, have always been a little disappointed in the variety (perhaps because I just get/need a single-share box?). Boxes are pretty much all greens, carrots, radishes, beets, and similar vegetables. I would very much prefer more staples like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, green beans, etc. Have only received tomatoes and potatoes a few times, in small amounts, and they were of the very small varieties. The idea of a CSA is you share the risks and rewards of good and bad harvests, but because JBG doesn't just do CSAs, it seems the CSAs just get what doesn't sell through their other channels. I could be wrong, but this is what it seems like. I have never received, say, a crapload to potatoes from a good harvest. I have, however, received overwhelming amounts of beets for weeks on end; so much so that I still have beets from last year in my freezer; nobody likes beets that much.

I absolutely love the produce at Johnson's Backyard Garden. The quality is always great and I look forward to seeing what they have each week at the downtown Austin farmer's market. I've tried the CSA but I ended up preferring to go to the farmer's market and pick out what I want each week. The people working the booth are always super friendly and happy to answer any questions you might have. Highly recommend!

If you've ever visited a local farmers market, you've undoubtedly seen the big, black and white logo Johnson's Backyard Garden trucks. Their market space is usually the largest at any site, due to the variety of organic vegetables they grow. I've already volunteered (actually, it should be called bartering) three or four times at their Hergotz Lane location. There, flats are filled with organic soil, seeds are planted in the flats' cells, seedlings are... well, it's a fully-functioning farm. Tasks are matched up with capabilities and we are allowed to work at our own speed. The entire staff is so friendly and warm; it's not unusual to hear a "thanks for volunteering today" from everyone there. Linsday—one of the volunteer coordinators—is pleasant and patient as she shows us what we'll be doing each session. After that, those with whom we're assigned to work with are free to converse freely about our experiences working there, our personal lives, our views on politics... whatever. Before you know it, the short shift is over and we're thanked and sent home with a beautiful stash of freshly-picked, organic vegetables. Johnson's Backyard Garden is located off Airport Blvd. in east Austin amidst other large tracts of land. Parking is free and convenient. If you like to experience a calm atmosphere, thoughtful conversation, and the feeling that you've made a difference in the local community, then Johnson's is a must-do experience!

The staff at JBG will go out of their way to be helpful and responsive to any issue that comes up. I have been a member for years and my kids love the way we get our vegetables delivered like this. Opening the reusable wax cardboard box has become a special trip on to pick them up in Houston. JBG makes it fun to introduce and discover new dishes to them, that bring my family together, and motivate my little ones to at least try something new, when they know how the process starts. I will find a way to get up there to Austin with them, to really introduce them to a farm, made easier with all of the special dates and ways JBG invites visitors with hay rides, volunteering and crops made special by the time of year. Really nice people.
