Cute classic diner style breakfast. The staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, which made the experience pleasant. That said, the food was a letdown especially for the price. I ordered the pastrami sandwich and was honestly shocked to find only one slice of pastrami inside. The sandwich looked sad and felt extremely skimpy, not at all what you’d expect when ordering pastrami in NYC. For what you’re paying, the portion size just doesn’t match.

If you’re in Chelsea or Flatiron and need a quick, casual breakfast, look no further! The pancake was extraordinary (a total must-order), and the Greek omelet was equally delicious. To top it off, the staff is incredibly fun to chat with while you wait. Highly recommended!

I love having my expectations exceeded, and this is exactly what happened. Found Johnny's by Googling "diner near me" and voila. Fabulous breakfast, ample portions, and frankly, its about the people. Genuine, and we loved it!! We were lucky by just beating a rush of people, but would definitely wait if we had to! We will make a point of this being a regular stop on future trips to nyc!! Was staying in Chelsea for the first time. Picked up a rec for this spot for breakfast from Diners, Diners and Diners. I was starving so I didn’t get enough photos. We got here during a short lull and were able to sit right down but within a few minutes the line outside grew pretty huge. If you’re in the area and want a nice quality sit down regular counter lunch or breakfast this is a perfect spot for it. Nice regular coffee black like i like. Excellent cook on the grill. Eggs were prefect. One of my favorite things is a quality counter breakfast and this hit.

Amazing original experience, the service was top tier and the food was great! These were the best pancakes I ever had. You need to queue outside for 20-30 mins but the queue moves fast and the food is worth the wait. These price was reasonable and genuinely I feel this is the best breakfast in the city. It is recommended for groups of max 3-4 people I would say. We got the banana and blueberry pancakes and the lumberjack with bacon and scrambled eggs, combined with maple syrup it was to die for. Can’t wait to visit again!

Really nice place to get a classic brunch! It’s not too big inside so there is a chance you’ll have to wait a little to get a seat, but it’s worth it! Portions are generous and staff is also very friendly and chatty :)

This is like my kitchen with a few extra chairs at the counter and two tables in the back. I was seated next to a folded Brompton Bicycle; felt right at home. I rode them for 20 years when I lived in London. I had an excellent vegetarian omelette and home fries. The portions were just right, coffee was very good, and the service was attentive, friendly, but not hovering. This is very cozy compared to a typical diner. I recommend highly!

My friends and I have been on the hunt for a new brunch spot, and I'm so glad we decided to give Johnny's Luncheonette a try! From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed by the friendly staff and the cozy, no-fuss atmosphere. We decided to try a little bit of everything--pancakes, omelettes, and sandwiches--and everything came out piping hot and absolutely delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and perfectly golden, while the omelettes were packed with fresh ingredients and cooked just right. As for the sandwiches, they were stacked high with quality ingredients and bursting with flavor. One thing we noticed right away was how generous the portions were--no one left hungry! Each dish was so satisfying, and the flavors were spot on. The only downside was the wait, but honestly, it wasn't a big deal because we could tell the food was made with care, and it was definitely worth it. If you're looking for a place that serves hearty, flavorful brunch dishes in a relaxed setting, Johnny's Luncheonette should be at the top of your list. We'll definitely be back soon to try more of the menu!

We went to New York City for a 1 week vacation and came across this cozy little place near the hotel we stayed at during spring break this year. The staffs were friendly and they will cook after you placed your order. It's a sit-in dine in style so it was really cool to have brief conversations with the staffs and watch they make your order. It's a small place so if it's full inside, you have to wait outside. You can place to-go orders for breakfast and lunch meal. We ordered the veggie omelet, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and came with toasts. The food was delicious and fresh! Would definitely come back the next time we're in NY. :)

Owner's first response to my review clearly shows a lack of humility or sense of responsibility. Just own it. Why the sarcasm? You made those breakfast plates. Pictures were taken at your restaurant. Maybe it was a bad day, I can accept that. But how you responded shows that you do not respect what your customers think. Your Yelp business description mentions that you pride yourself on customer satisfaction. Well, customer service does not end with the meal. This customer was not satisfied. Please think about that. I know your restaurant is popular and don't care about a single poor review. Regardless, I gave your place two opportunities to impress me and it didn't. Therefore, it's my right to share what I experienced with others. Cuisine: 3 Service: 1 Decor: 6 Value: 4 Overall: 1 I am unsure what I'm missing, or maybe this place changed over the years, but it's not very good. All the positive reviews I see are so confusing because my two experiences here have been subpar. On my most recent visit, two of us shared a Sausage Egg & Cheese (double egg, sausage links, and cheese) and a Mushroom Omelette. Well, if a picture says a thousand words, then just look at my pictures. That sad excuse for a Sausage Egg & Cheese may have been served on the softest roll I ever had, but where's the filling? Are they using the smallest sausage links and eggs they can find? I certainly think yes. Now look at that Mushroom Omelette (3 eggs). Clearly they didn't take the care to beat the eggs properly, hence you can see the uneven color of the omelette. Once again, what size eggs are they using? Must by extra small. Anyway, bland and flavorless. You can also see that the home fries that came with the plate had no crispiness at all. After a mediocre first visit, followed by this super underwhelming second visit two years later, I will not be back again. Whatever people love about this place is unlikely the prices either since they are not exactly cheap, especially when portions are so small. Oh well, it may be just me. But then again, look at the pictures and you decide.

Great food at an old time diner. The place is only one counter and one table but the service is very personable and fast. I went for lunch and the place was full but it did turnover pretty fast. I am told that there is a line on the weekends. The vibe is old New York greasy spoon but that's its charm.

Why is everyone talking about hype? It's a luncheonette with breakfast and lunch food that is close to my office. Just eat your food. BLT, Fries, and an Arnold Palmer please! Thanks for all the lunches over the years!

Food: 2 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 3 stars We came by after I saw raving reviews on Yelp and on Instagram. Thankfully, there was zero line... if there would've been a line, I'd be pissed. We got the eggs and pancakes, and both were... ok? My pancakes and my eggs are better. The coffee was pretty bad as was the hot chocolate. The servers were really nice though! Overall, I don't think this place is worth the hype, very average.

This place offers a true down and dirty breakfast. They are fast and efficient with no frills. If you're looking for a simple (greasy) breakfast, this place will do you just fine. They have limited seating, so expect to wait. The chef is also the host and cashier, so he has no time for pleasantries! The young man helping behind the counter was very personable and fast, so you can have a meal and get out quickly, if that's the goal.

Johny's has been around for 30 years and there is always a line to get in. This is basic diner fare. Nothing special except that the place is tiny. The food is fine and the service is good, but it simply not equal to the hype.

Standard diner fare that you'd probably be able to cook at home, but the small diner experience and the banter of the staff make it pleasurable.

Visiting from the Midwest, this was hands down the best choice we made in the city. The food was super tasty, the service was awesome and it was fun to watch the food being cooked right in front of you. Everyone there was super friendly, and the atmosphere made for a great start to the day.

I came here on a Saturday morning around 10am and the place was packed! There is usually a line outside the establishment because the inside is quite small and can maybe seat around 15 people. But the line goes pretty quickly. I was seated by 10.15am at the bar. The service is quick and polite. I loved that you could actually see the chef cooking up orders right behind the bar. There is a very cozy personal vibe to this place that I will definitely be coming back for. The food was delicious. I got the lumberjack pancakes special. The charred sausage was so good! And the pancakes were just the right amount of thickness where they didn't feel too heavy. The price is also unbeatable, the total was $15. Note that they're a cash only establishment and have an ATM outside if you don't have cash on you. But I would recommend bringing cash if you can.

Extremely rude cook behind the counter -- I ordered at the takeout window the BREAKFAST PLATTER (I literally said that to the window person). He asked me pancakes or French toast, and the meat selection to which I replied no meat. In lieu of meat, I did ask for cheese on the eggs. Fast forward from a 20 minute wait, I take my food to my office and find cheesy eggs atop a stack of pancakes (ew), and no potatoes. I promptly run back because I didn't wait 20 minutes in freezing weather to not have my full order. I go back and explain that I ordered the breakfast platter and didn't receive toast or potatoes. The cook behind the counter argued me down in front of customers and said that I didn't order the platter, etc and that what I ordered didn't come with potatoes. I read aloud the menu he said 'he put together' which includes everything I mentioned. I also asked 'if it didn't come these things, why did the counter person ask what meat I wanted'? His reply: 'he's new'. This guy obviously has no sense of customer service, and maybe an ego trip, but it literally would have taken him a few minutes to make potatoes, apologize for the miscommunication with HIS employee, and leave a good taste in the customer's mouth about the establishment. This place is making food no better than the deli on the corner, charging a premium, and sorely dissatisfying customers. Save your money and go elsewhere, I know they won't see a dime from my colleagues and I.

Great classic diner in Chelsea. Seems like there's usually a few min wait, so be prepared if there's weather. There's about 10 counter stools and 6 table seats that turn over quickly. There's also a convenient pickup window for takeout. Food was perfect and came out hot. Service was fast and receptive. Pancakes were fluffy, eggs were cooked perfectly, omelette ham was sliced deli ham and peppers weren't cooked. There didn't appear to be any customer bathrooms, 20% gratuity was automatically included and it was cash only ($85 for 4 people).

Old school at its best in this tiny diner ! We came here three days in a row because it was fun and good. Loved sitting at the counter and watching the Coon hustle out the breakfast orders and chatting with the counter men. Lots of takeout orders with locals picking up breakfast sandwiches and coffee on the way to work. Twice we had to pay in cash because the card reader didn't work., but there's an ATM just outside.

I mean, hands down delish. This place is my kind of place. Nothing fancy to it just good ol American breakfast and they are fast too. This place is very small so party of 2 no more than 4-5 is perfect. You'll get in & the wait is worth it. It won't be a long wait either bc they prepare the food fresh and fast. This is a very nice, family-owned restaurant. It is a small establishment, with about 15 seats available. We came for breakfast and waited for maybe 5 minutes to get seated. They are very efficient and attentive. We all got omelettes and they were really good. This is a really cool spot. We will definitely come back!

Not sure what the rave is about. Clearly a spot for locals with cheap eats and mediocre food. You get what you pay for. The cook was working his butt off. Doing an excellent job pushing all those orders through. Very small with counter seats and a couple of tables. No big deal. Loved the experience of dining in a luncheonette. What I didn't love was how extremely rude the lady waitress was! We ordered the Big man breakfast & an egg sandwich. She asked what we drinking we both said coffee. We got 1 coffee. She couldn't be bothered with getting us the other cup. Finally got another cup served in the rudest fashion, after several attempts to get her attention for the 2nd cup. We didn't even a chance to ask for cream. toEnded up getting cream from young man working register. She put our food order to the back of the line. Clearly obvious as it was done right in front of us. You can clearly see everything that's going on in a small establishment. Customers seated after us, served before us, even with the most basic orders. Should've got the pancakes vs French toast. 2 big pancakes vs 1 slice of bread for French toast. I can see by responses of previous yelp reviews, my review won't matter to the restaurant. Don't matter I won't be going back. I made sure to know my tip was for the cook and not the rude waitress. Really un-called for the nasty attitude. Sorry we're not your "regulars". If you like cheap eats and mediocre food and being waited/served with a side of rudeness this is your place.

I've lived in nyc for 10 years, manager and staff here were incredibly rude in how they treat people (beyond a typical nyc joint). Place says closes at 2, got here at 130 and traveled a long way as it's been on my list of things to try. Knowing they'd be busy and not wanting to sit down as they'd probably want to close and I know how annoying it is when people walk in last minute (30 minutes isnt even last minute at a diners), I asked for a takeout order. Manager Jose rudely says we are closed. I said you close at 2? He says takeout done at 145 and shut window on me. The people waiting in line outside laughed and said it's not even 145 they are making things up. I walked in and said it's 130? He goes I'm the manager I make the rules. I asked for his name and another employee said his name is the "the boss." Sure that's pretty funny for him to laugh, but a very poor way to treat a potential customer. Tldr. Terrible service. Lines up with the reviews if you search the keywords in poor experiences

Came here 3 days in a row due to convenience and price. Each day my order was wrong. I don't understand how someone can get an order wrong despite throughly writing down the order. They also sometimes claim the systems are down and they are cash only but we all know they don't want to pay card processing fees. Overall, you're better off stopping at any other deli for a solid breakfast order than dealing with this nonsense. After the owner responded and lied ... I decided to bring this down to 1 star. First of all, the orders were to go so at no point did I stiff anyone out of a tip. Secondly, that doesn't correct that you all got the order wrong 3/3 times. I'll happily take my money elsewhere

Awesome cozy breakfast/lunch spot with plus service and food. The menu has a ton of options that I'll have to go back and try - this first time, the Farmer's omelette was amazing and the homefries were among the best I've had (I think they use eggs with them too). There isn't much space inside so you may have to wait, but it's well worth it - love Johny's.

Johny's is pretty centrally located in Manhattan on 25th St and 6th Ave. It's a great restaurant and they make good quality food for a low price but it seems to be a bit overhyped. It seems like NYC in general has a habit of rating establishments highly if they're affordable and decent. Certainly this is a decent place to go - the food comes in big portions for an affordable price, and it's done decently well. You can tell the quality of the ingredients and the cooking methods are solid. However, everything is a bit underseasoned and underwhelming. The wait is long. Over 45 minutes on a weekend morning and there weren't even that many people ahead of us - maybe 7 or 8. There's a little overhang to protect you from the elements, but not much of one - so good luck if it's raining. I think it's worth a visit if you live in Manhattan - a lazy weekend morning where you're hungry but have some time to kill. Talk to the owner, hear the chatter, watch the cook.

I've walked past this place a million times and never noticed it lol. I was lingering around the goodwill and waiting for it to open when I realized I NEEDED brunch. I saw across the street this tiny hole in the wall!! The servers/cooks are very funny and banterful It has a very family dining feeling at the bar There's lots of tourists looking for a budget/novelty stop. Those are usually the most fun to talk to, and we had some interesting conversations! The prices are excellent for midtown and service is swift Beware, they charge for coffee refills (even for sit down) They cook everything on one cooktop, but keep breads/meats to the right

Read about & now experienced the amazing local eatery! Nothing fancy here! No coat check, or reservations. Just amazing food & service! Yes, there is a wait, well worth, wait of 20 minutes. Our waiter, Joshua was polite & checked on us constantly to ensure we had what we needed. The ambiance is casual, nothing fancy, obvious where the locals eat. We walked 2 miles to get here, again worth the walk. Numerous bar seatings & few high top tables, small establishment. We had two different plates of food. Neither one of us had any complaints. Everything was perfectly done! As was the waiter! Ordered a 3 pancake platter, on my mind I thought I could only eat 1 pancake. I ended up eating most of the 3 pancakes, these pancake's literally melt in your mouth. Food is immediately served and plates are very hot. Bacon is perfectly crispy. Eggs perfectly sunny Side scrumptious & well seasoned. Never ever have I had such a perfect Arnold Palmer! Guess what! I had several here! Menu prices very reasonable. Definitely worth the visit!

This was around my workplace so I decided to give it a shot. I do like the look and feel of the establishment as it's basically a hole in the wall type. I ordered the Mediterranean wrap to go, which consist of a wrap with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, vegy toppings, and balsamic vinaigrette on the side. Flavor was good and it travelled well given it was a hot wrap. I did wish the wrap was a bit bigger for the price of $10.99. That would have been my one minor complaint. The wait did take a while (over 15 mins long) but understandable since it is a small joint. All in all, I give it 3 stars as it didn't knock my socks off but decent enough for lunch.

I get off the plane at JFK craving an egg on a hard roll. Loved sitting at the counter, sipping a piping hot coffee with too much vanilla creamer in it, and hoofing down that soft bread layered with bacon and egg. It sounds so simple, yet it's what dreams are made of.

Great value for Manhattan and the food was decent. We got in right before it got busy. The inside had small counter tops with bar seating. If you don't come in the right time except to wait 20 minutes. Most of the client seems to be mostly tourist and some locals. The portion was very generous and it definitely filled us up for all the walking downtown.

Small place that is worth the wait. Greasy spoon type spot with only about 12 seats and most of those are at the counter. The staff have to work in close counters and I enjoyed watching them work with such constraints. Food was perfect for what I like for breakfast. I like the basics and they got that. Only bummed they didn't have anymore shirts to buy.

Great place. Absolutely tiny. Maybe a total of 14-16 seats. Food was great and prices were fantastic. Owner was a wealth of knowledge about places for dinner. This will be our breakfast spot the remainder of our stay. My wife and I both had a great breakfast and a couple cups of really decent coffee for less than $30. That's less than half of what I have paid for breakfast other places.

OLD SCHOOL NEW YORK LUNCH COUNTER. Great for breakfast too! Yes, at one time, there were many such breakfast/lunch counters in the city. Now, only a few remain. They are characterized by a single long dining counter that runs the length of the place. You won't find any tables or booths here, because there isn't enough room! The kitchen is right in front of you on the other side of the counter. That's all there is to it. My wife and I were looking for a breakfast place not far from our hotel on the 29th and 5th. I was pleased to find this gem and was familiar with this type of place from my youth. We are not disappointed. I had eggs over medium with grilled pastrami! It came with home-fried potatoes, toast (I had an English muffin), and coffee! it was perfect and super delicious! Watching the staff behind the counter at the grill is like poetry in motion. There are no wasted steps or movements; everything they do has a purpose. If you are looking for a great breakfast or lunch, stop into johnny's and experience a piece of the city now almost lost to the past--the classic NYC counter diner. And BTW, forgo the sausage and treat yourself to the pastrami! You won't regret it. Cute NYC diner spot. Think a less frenzied Waffle House, but definitely a well oiled machine. Loved that they check all identification and vaccination cards. Each meal comes with coffee which I don't drink , but my husband had mine because they do charge for refills which is also fine. Breakfast potatoes were good, but I should have asked for crispy. Bacon was terribly flabby, but I definitely believe it was because I didn't give any information on what I wanted so that was my problem, not the cooks.Eggs were perfect because I did make specific requests there. So keep that in mind. It's a tiny spot and the gentlemen running it are on point. They do a booming take out business. It was fun to watch them do their thing. Just be specific in how you want things cooked. Best prices for breakfast in the entire city!!

Still a solid choice for breakfast, even after all these years later. Pancakes are as good as I remember, and there's almost always a line. Just do yourself a favor, if you see loads of people walking out, don't politely stand there outside to wait your turn (especially if there's no longer a line behind you), just poke your head in and take a seat. I made the error of waiting, and a couple tried to cut the line. When I confronted them, one of them goes "SO what?" and I just about lost it. Turns out they knew the owner, but clearly weren't familiar with manners or common courtesy.

Very good food and good music and good atmosphere and overall very good. The owner was there and very friendly. Feels like an old school diner where people come to eat and chat.

I can't understand these high ratings. Ordered a Turkey bacon egg and cheddar cheese on a roll and it was probably the worst, most underwhelming breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Tasteless, puny, unremarkable. For something so basic it was so bad-- I can't even understand why? The coffee was also awful. My friend had chocolate banana pancakes and thought they were good-- so maybe stick with the sweets.

UPDATE* I am changing this review from 4 to 5 stars. Why? I went to the office this morning expecting there to be oatmeal packets available but.. we were out. Rather than panicking, I went downstairs to JL, sat at the counter immediately and ordering a Florentino omelette with bacon + rye toast + tea and watched my breakfast come alive on the griddle directly across from me. Food came out instantly and it was perfect. The only reason I don't have a photo is because I was enjoying it way too much and didn't have time. The space may seem a little cramped at first glance though it's very comfortable and the food is super reliable. I'm officially a regular. Original Review* Amazing and convenient all-day breakfast spot with a generous selection of unique items. I had the Brady Bun which had a Turkey patty, Turkey bacon and grilled onions. Used their house hot sauce and boom! It really hit the spot. The only reason this has 4 stars is because of the space itself being very narrow and tight. Though I love the staff and overall vibe. Will have to try the pancakes next time. Big fan!

Loved this little diner! This was a place recommended by one of our friends who lives locally. We had to wait 30-35 mins because they only seat about 18-20 ppl. They're service is fast and food is delicious! My husband and I got the Big Man breakfast which came with two pancakes (or french toast) bacon, sausages, eggs, hash browns and toast with either coffee or tea. Just amazing! If you want good food and don't mind waiting to get in, it's definitely worth the wait.

So glad we found this gem! It's super tiny, so you may have to wait to be seated, but it's worth it! Service was excellent even with just one server. My banana chocolate chip pancakes had actual slices of banana in them. Of course, huge portion. The other three in my party loved their meals also. I can't remember what they all had but I think one had the burrito. If we stayed in Chelsea again, I'd be back!

Come to Johny's for the hot-off-the-grill diner eats, unbeatable value, and fast service. My boyfriend got the (1) Chocolate Chip Pancake with a side of Bacon, and I got the (2) Two Eggs on a Roll with Bacon. Everything we got was delicious and came out WARM and FRESH. We also appreciated the casual rustic diner feel and the no-frills expediency. It was our cheapest weekend brunch in a long time ($33 including tip). My boyfriend says he'll be back in no time. Service was efficient but brusque, since people rotate in and out fast. Come with the right expectations, and you'll enjoy the food! Note that although a family was dining when we were there, most of the seats were dominated by a younger bro-y crowd, and it was a bit loud.

He got a spinach omelet with potatoes (homefries) and I got a sausage and american cheese omelet with home fries and wheat toast. Very good.

Great, Freshly made diner style food packed in a small location! Searching for a breakfast location I found this place and went in specifically for the King Kong. It's a little bit of everything you love for breakfast. It's a little sweet, and savory. The King Kong is "French Toast on a hero with 3 eggs, Bacon, Bananas, and Cinnamon" It is absolutely delicious!!! I also ordered a side if home fries, which were good and well seasoned. Service was impeccable! The entire staff was friendly!For such a small space, They run like a well oiled machine. You can tell customer service is first priority. To-go orders are processed through the outside window, which eliminates excess people from waiting inside. You can order via phone, in-person, or online for simple easy pickup. We chose to dine in. There was someone in front of us and We had to wait outside, but the guy was pretty accurate with the timing. Seating is somewhat limited, but I enjoy my breakfasts hot and fresh, so we chose to wait.! I know it's a luncheonette (Hopefully diner isn't offensive), but I wish larger diners would take-notes from Johny's, because This is how you do it well! A good staff and good food!!!
