Joju - Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Joju, a fast casual Vietnamese spot, has a fourth NYC location on the Upper East Side. Diners can pick a protein from things like lemongrass chicken, caramel pork, or ginger seitan, and get them in a bánh mi, vermicelli, or rice bowl. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

This place has been eyeing me every time I leave the subway station and it has finally pulled me in, and I am soooo glad it did! A modern take on Vietnamese sandwiches and they are amazing. The sandwich I got was the Caramel Pork Banh Mi which was reeeeeally good. The pork is cooked in a caramel sauce which is such a unique flavor combination. I got it because it sounded weird, and it definitely was weird but in the most delicious way possible!!! Paired so well with the cucumber and I also loved the shredded carrot on top. The bread was toasted really well and I got two sauces on the side to sample with the sandwich. The spicy mayo was like any standard one so it was good, but the spicy green sauce was incredible!!! Definitely getting more of that next time. I also tried the Joju fries, which were double fried so they were sooooo crispy. Like impressively crispy I loved these SOOOOO MUCH. They were topped with all the same toppings in the sandwich so it was such a good item. The portion felt large too so I would totally come back and order just this as the meal. Got a thai tea too because why not, its as great as any thai tea is. Yum! The inside of the store was cute but I ordered my stuff to go, it traveled well for the 5-7ish minute walk before I ate. I will definitely be back to try other items because this was awesome!

Really amazing food! We ordered Caramel Pork Banh Mi, Beef Bulgogi Bowl, and Kimchi Fries. Fantastic flavors and it just hit the spot after walking all over NYC. I ate the bowl before taking a picture because I could not wait. It just smelled so good. The spicy mayo sauce is so addictive and the fries were crispy and delicious. It's a small shop so there may not be enough space to sit if it's busy. But I would 100% be back the next time I'm in the city.

We were quite excited that JOJU opened a new location on Upper East Side near us. The banh mi was great - authentic flavors and very generous portions. The JOJU & the SWEET JOJU were excellent. The finely shredded and pickled carrots/veggies toppings was exceptionally. This JOJU will be a weekly visit! Cheers!

Google
Joju’s double-fried fries are some of the best fries you’ll have. The customizable Vietnamese iced coffee also deserves high marks. The Joju rice bowl, while satisfying, skews sweet, and needs more acid and spice. Maybe because Joju is very popular with takeout and delivery, the service can seem slow. Limited seating is available with only 4 small tables.

I was excited to try this place as I saw a huge line for it the day before, but I was very disappointed with the food. I tried a grilled pork bowl which looked unappetizing to begin with and tasted even worse. Also, the rice texture was off, as if it were undercooked. I felt the caramel pork banh mi sandwich was just as underwhelming as the bowl. The bread was not tasty and the pork flavor was not for me. I also had the JoJu fries which were okay. The Vietnamese iced coffee was mediocre. The restaurant was really clean and had a nice aesthetic which I appreciated. The employees were patient, seemed lovely, and were happy to take my order. Unfortunately, JoJu was not my cup of tea and will not be returning. These opinions are my own and I mean absolutely no hate towards JoJu!

Ordered the Joju bowl to go and it def hit the spot. Super tasty and only waited a few minutes before it was ready. Will definitely be back!

Google
Great addition to the neighborhood. We have many pho places but im always looking for a great Bahn mi. Solid selection. The bowls were also delish! I thought they would have some hiccups during the soft opening but they got my order perfect like pros.

Google
Tiny joint with only 4 tables; convenient ordering through terminal; great bahn mi’s and many more positions on the menu

Yelp
Stopped by Joju and got the Joju bowl, I asked the staff what they would recommend and they said that the ones with the hearts are customer favorites and this was one of them. It has both the spiced ground pork and a pork sausage. It also came with kimchi, pickled radish over a bed of rice. I also got the spicy green sauce which was definitely spicy. The spot itself is very small only 4 small tables inside where you can wait for your food. Not really a spot to eat. Overall likely return as I want to try the sandwiches as well.

Yelp
Had a good banh mi sandwich. Menu is very focused on this but gives you multiple variations and options on this same theme. (Almost too many choices / confusing- although I guess if you are regular you can experiment) You pick your meat choices and then select which spicy sauce - I picked the green one which had a kick but was pretty good. Food came out quickly- seems geared towards take away as only a few seats.

Yelp
Got takeout from Joju with my parents this past weekend, and it did not disappoint! The inside of the restaurant is bright, airy, and gets tons of natural light. They've got a few tables inside in case you want to eat in, but it seems like a lot of their customers get takeout. When you walk in, there's a worker at the counter who greets everyone warmly. If you're not in the talking mood, there's a kiosk off to the side where you can order your food. It's honestly nice to have both options available. I've seen tofu bahn mi sandwiches at other Vietnamese spots, but this was my first time seeing one with seitan. The seitan was seasoned perfectly, and had the perfect bite to it. I paired it off with kimchi, spicy mayo, and spicy green sauce- all the flavors melded together perfectly. Since it was a hot day, I also got the lemon Thai iced tea, which was just as delicious as the food. Definitely check out this spot if you're in the mood for delicious Vietnamese food!

Yelp
Omg my new favorite place to get banh mi in upper east side! The portions are ginormous. I got one Bulgogi banh mi and a caramelized pork banh mi. They were both great, but I think I prefer the bulge. The meat was super fat, but it was interesting that they drained it so oils weren't falling out of your sandwich. I also got a Vietnamese iced coffee and spring roll appetizer. Same thing with the spring rolls, they weren't overly oily. The spring rolls were also served with a delicious house made sweet-and-sour sauce. You can either order at the front or through a kiosk if you don't wanna talk to anybody. The food was brought out fast. The indoors has four different tables.

Yelp
Excited to see Joju open their 4th location! I've had their sandwiches before in Flushing, and they're just as good as I remembered. I went with the #1 Classic sandwich and a Lemon Thai tea, which came to about $19 -- not bad, especially in UES. I grabbed takeout during their soft opening. The space was small but cozy, and the staff was welcoming. I'll come back for more whenever I get the chance. Definitely check it out if you are around the neighborhood.

Yelp
Tried Joju on a weeknight right before they closed for the day. Decided on the classic, since that's usually my go to at banh mi spots! I thought overall, the banh mi was alright - the pickled carrots and radish were great though. I would've liked more fishy/funk in my late and stronger flavors for the meat. Also, I felt the bread was a bit tough. Overall, would come back if I'm in a pinch for a quick meal. + points for nice service!

Yelp
Must try: JoJu Monster Banh Mi! Why: Traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi with a modern twist. Packed with pate, ham, BBQ pork, fried egg with cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots, and cilantro in a toasted baguette - yum! I appreciated how much meat they put in, especially sliced ham and fat piece of BBQ pork. I also liked the thinly sliced pickled veggies and of course a fried egg. I was hoping for a more runny egg to soak the bread a bit but each bite was delightful! Banh Mi was cut in half and they have a convenient branded to-go box. Very much enjoyed the Banh Mi! Notes: This location was a pizza shop before so I'm super happy a Vietnamese Banh Mi shop moved in. Finally, a great Banh Mi shop up here! New location so it's fresh and clean. Workers were welcoming and helpful. They have tables if you wanted to dine in. I like their simple menu with Banh Mi, Bowls, Rolls, Fries, and drinks. Can't wait to come back and try other items. This will def be my go-to spot!

Yelp
This place will be popular for quite some time. Perfect location and the food is good. Classic Banh Mi - got the green sauce and sriracha mayo on the side. Excellent 5/5 Bbq pork bowl - it was good. Next time I want to try the caramelized pork. 4/5.

Yelp
What a nice addition to the neighborhood! They have so many options on their menu and from bowls to sandwiches to fries and drinks! Crunchy monster spring rolls 5/5 I got these with the spicy green sauce, which I loved. It wasn't too spicy at all and really went well with the crunch of the rolls. Definitely worth ordering Lemongrass chicken banh mi 4/5 Amazing bread and the veggies were so good. I wish I got it with the spicy green sauce since it needed a little kick #11 bulgogi bomb me banh mi 5/5 Perfect amount of moisture to the sandwich with the runny egg and kimchi. I really enjoyed this one! One sandwich was super filling and I'd definitely want to come back to true some of the other items on the menu

Yelp
Delicious banhmi sandwiches! What a great welcomed addition to the area. Staff are friendly. There are a few tables to sit and eat there. It just opened and looks very clean. They have a BOGO (free chicken banhmi with purchase of another banhmi) for their grand opening on 1/25. I had the classic banhmi. I also tasted my friend's banhmi with the sausage and egg. So delicious Their bread is so good. Their pickled shredded carrot is so tasty. I would go back and try their bowls next time.

Yelp
Came here during the soft opening and I hope this place does well. The Banh Mi itself was really good! The Caramel Pork in the sandwich was amazing, it gave the pork a perfect texture while not being too sweet on the sauce. The crudité inside the sandwich was fresh and gave a great contrast of texture and freshness to the sweet pork. The bread was by no means bad in any way but if I had any critique it would be awesome if the bread was just the slightest bit softer. I've never had a bad Thai tea in my life but Joju is doing their Thai tea right! Not too sweet which I love and you can do the option of less sugar as well if you please. The staff was saying they are really proud of their fries so that is something I will have to try next time I come back, because I will for sure be coming back.

Yelp
So glad Joju opened this new location in the UES! As a Queens native, Joju is the only place I go to for consistently delicious and fresh banhmi! They have the crispiest, juiciest, and freshest banhmi sandwiches with quality ingredients. You can tell they put a lot of effort to deliver great food and service. The pricing is almost really good for amount of food you get. Their caramelized pork and also lemongrass chicken banhmis are my staples as well as the Joju loaded fries with runny egg on top. Will be ordering more often!

Yelp
I have tried this location of Joju before and liked it. Recently, I got take out and tried a bowl. This one has cabbage, other veggies and chicken- it was pretty good. It came with two sauces - one looked like mustard and had a touch of spice; the other was a spicy mayo. I wanted a noodle salad, but that is not on offer at this location. Hopefully, it will be at some point. I look forward to trying more things.

Yelp
Went for the soft opening Wow this is good! The Joju bowl is FRESH. The staff were very friendly. This is what the upper east side has been missing especially second avenue. Something fresh that's not Italian, American or French. It's different it's good flavorful. Everything has its own flavor. Oh it's affordable. I love it. I think the upper east side was missing this. Will definitely try a different kind of bowl next time! Decor is simple but effective.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood. We ordered takeout for lunch. It was so fresh. Caramel Bahn Mi was excellent. The loaded fries were also awesome. Will order again!

Yelp
We got take out opening weekend and it did not disappoint! Food was super flavorful and honestly delicious. We got two drinks as well. The people were super nice and helped us choose the kimchi fries which were INCREDIBLE. cute little spot would def go back again!

Yelp
The food was great except that I ordered spicy green sauce and unfortunately they forget even though I asked again as I left. In such a competitive market it I really is the attention to detail that matters. Triple check your order.

Yelp
great option for a "bowl" meal, the beef bulgogi was great and I love that you can choose multiple sauces on the side. I did pick-up and it was super fast.
