The Best Chinese Food in Portland

"Located next to the Portland State University campus, Jong Can serves student budget-friendly Cantonese dishes in sizable portions. The restaurant’s name is Cantonese for “lunch,” or literally, “middle meal.” The menu offers a variety of fried rice and noodle dishes, which have good “wok hei” — the phrase translates to “breath of the wok” and describes the essence imparted to food during stir frying. Order the pork chop fried rice, which features a deep-fried pork cutlet, or one of the cheesy baked rice options, which blankets melty cheese over fried rice with proteins like curry chicken or salmon for the ultimate Chinese comfort food." - Seiji Nanbu, Janey Wong, Rebecca Roland

The restaurant is simple yet has a clean and tidy, bright atmosphere with a pay-first style. We had Honey Garlic Chicken Wings, Scrambled Eggs with Pork Chop, and Spicy Pork Belly. Both the chicken and thinly sliced pork were flavorful and well-marinated, and the eggs paired perfectly with the seasoned rice and pork chop. The portions were generous, and although we intended to leave some, we ended up finishing everything. The owner was friendly and pleasant. I'd love to try other dishes here.🤤

Jong Can's honey garlic chicken wings and house fried rice are delicious! The wings were perfectly glazed, offering a delightful balance of sweetness and garlic zest. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, but the service provided was top-notch. The staff went above and beyond, making the dining experience exceptional. I wholeheartedly recommend Jong Can to anyone seeking fantastic food and excellent service!

Wonderful spot with great beef chow fun and fresh boba teas. No powder mixes here! Also love the Orange Squash Jasmine tea. Super friendly too. A new favorite.

Google
I love this place.... So glad I found it. I am kind of a creature of habit and always order the Black Pepper Chicken. It is so delicious I think about it when I'm nowhere near the place. Nice portion. Super fresh and flavorful. Always nice staff and reasonable prices make it a great lunch spot. I just love it and want to make sure this place has enough business to stick around. One tiny caveat...there are never more than one or two people working at once so if it is busy, waiting time can be a little long. Since I only have a 30 minute lunch I have tried to call ahead and order, but that has never worked out as no one seems to answer the phone when I have tried this. Not sure what's going on there, but the food is worth a bit of a wait. Check it out!

Google
We decided to try Jong Can for takeout after work today, and we were pleasantly surprised. The place was clean and modern, the man who took our order at the front was really nice, everything was reasonably priced, the food came out pretty quick - long enough to let us know they were making our food to order, but quick enough to be a good takeout place - and the food was delicious. We got black soy chow mein, cashew shrimp, and spicy pork belly. Everything tasted fresh and not overly oily. We'll definitely be going back.

Finally found a nice Chinese restaurant in Portland central area. The restaurant is very clean with nice lighting. Staff are friendly. The dish are delicious with good portion. Will definitely go back if travel to Portland again.

Like being taken back to Changsha, Hunan! I had the stir fried pork with peppers and it was a little different than Qing Jiao Chou Rou, but I could taste it's DNA! The addition of cabbage was great, I didn't hate the bell peppers when I usually do and the spice and oil was less than what I remember from China, but they've turned it from a meat main designed for large family dining situation in a Chinese family restaurant into a complete meal for one and I just really enjoyed this place! Don't sleep on it! Feels pretty new and I am going to come back frequently!! Honestly my only gripe is I wish there was a way to get a small side of their vegetables dishes to balance out my meal and that's such a small gripe. I've never found a Chinese stir fry place in PDX that I loved before but this place was love at first bite!

Yelp
Food is great! Highly recommended, Thai tea is very good, service is great and fast. Loved the feel of the restaurant and the ambiance!

Yelp
The Cheese Baked Rice with pork and Korean-style Fried Rice were moderately satisfying. There's usually only a few customers, if any. They've lasted so maybe there's a following. I eat at Tipsy Teapot a block away about 2-3x a week, but would revisit here just to break the routine. I appreciate the carafe of ice water and also that they offer Chin-Su hot sauce. Owner/counter guy was polite.

Yelp
I don't believe that there is a good reason to go here and I would suggest that you avoid it. Not sure but I believe that the business changed hands and the lowering of quality is a result. I work nearby and tried it on a recommendation from someone who had gone long ago and enjoyed the food. Here were my highlights: food was prepared with old tasting frying oil, we were the only ones there and it took a long time to receive the food, things that made me question hygiene (dirty water containers, disposable cups in a washing rack as if they had be reused, etc. ), boba was not cooked well, lack of any service as the person working must go into the back to cook so you have to wait for anything you need. I hate leaving bad reviews but this was not a good experience.

Yelp
Review Time! Had an amazing dining experience at this restaurant! Here's why: Good Food: The dishes were delicious, and the prices were reasonable. A perfect combination for foodies on a budget! Great Service: The service was top-notch. Friendly staff who made our visit even more enjoyable. Hot Noodles: The temperature of my noodles was just right - piping hot! It enhanced the flavors and made every bite delightful. Aromatic Bliss: The aroma from the slightly burnt noodles added a unique twist to my dish. It was a pleasant surprise that elevated the overall taste. I highly recommend trying this place out. It's a hidden gem for those who appreciate good food, affordability, and a touch of culinary creativity! #FoodieFinds #DeliciousDining

Yelp
All the food was delicious with a homey flavor. The s taff was courteous and pleasant.

Yelp
I don't know what happened to this place, it used to have the most delicious menu. Now everything seems to be a leftover fried rice dish coated with cream. Gone is the delicious spicy eggplant and a lot of other meat, seafood, and vegetable, focused dishes.

Yelp
Attempted going there three times, only ate there once. They open at 11am according to Google, Yelp, and at their door. When we arrived at 12pm, the first time we went, the manager arrived the same time as us and had to wait for them to open and get the kitchen ready. The next two times were horrible experiences so I'm giving them 1 star. Most recently, arrived at 11:45, 45min later than when they're supposed to be open. Still closed. Waited and gave up. It's hard to find parking and they weren't even open. Either change the hours they open or open at the right time. Their food is good but I'd rather go elsewhere for Chinese food who follows their hours.

Yelp
Really yummy Chinese and Korean and fusion comfort food. Counter service was quick and super friendly. I got the garlic eggplant, green beans, and tofu and would definitely order it again.

Yelp
Pretty happy with the Black Pepper Chicken and Beef Chow Fun! The meat were very tender, especially the chicken. I really liked that their food was not overly salty or sweet. Great ratio of protein to rice and noodles as well. Food was made fresh for pickup and prices were amazing. A great spot for a quick, casual meal.

Yelp
We had curry chicken rice, beef chow fun and stir fried cauliflower with pork belly. They are all very delicious.

Yelp
Some friends and I were yelping around for places to try in downtown Portland and stumbled upon this little fella. We ordered the honey garlic chicken wings, baked pork chop rice and cha siu pork. The honey garlic wings was great and the size of the wings was not what I was expecting since it was bigger than anyicipated. The baked pork chop had a bunch of flavors that I haven't really experienced before. The cha siu was a little on the bland side but it was overall great. I would recommend this place for those who are craving a bite to eat that isn't big in prortion. I am sorry for not being able to post more pictures as we ended up eating them too quickly.

Yelp
I come here every so often to get cheese baked rice. I've tried the pork chop, pepper chicken, and chicken curry baked rices and I love them all. I think the chicken curry one is the best however. The server is nice and I think he cooks the food himself. Overall, great place to dine if on PSU campus

Yelp
Very cute shop inside, i was excited to try the food because i dont see the cheese baked dishes often. I would recommend trying the pork chop scrambled eggs, because the eggs are perfectly cooked. The chicken from the other two dishes were also perfectly cooked. There is some street parking nearby that is free after 7pm everyday! I took the baked one togo and baked it at home and it was still very good!! As we were there, multiple people came in to order togo so they were quite busy in my opinion.

Yelp
5-star best food!awesome! Have to come again one more time! Best dumplings ever! Fish soup is great too!

Yelp
The kimchi fried rice is tasty and the black pepper chicken is also good for me to keep coming back! Everything is made right after ordering! Need to give it a try and find out what you like the best from this place.

Yelp
The food here is delicious and the service is amazing The atmosphere is peaceful. 10/10 for the food and boba. They do close on Saturdays, but they are open the rest of the days. Thank you for the great service and yummy food!

Yelp
Cute quant seating and ambiance! Polite and quick service! And delicious food and Thai iced tea!

Yelp
Based on the reviews, I called in advance to confirm that they were opened. Quiet and clean space. I have been craving some good old Hong Kong cafe style cantonese inspired food. This place is it. NOWHERE in Portland have I found a good Beef Chow fun. Portland just doesn't know how to do it. But Jong Can does. Smoky, perfectly cooked noodles. If you love Beef Chow Fun - this place is where to go. Also ordered the cheesy curry chicken dish. This dish is SO comforting, the spice of a creamy curry on a bed of egg fried rice and topped with some gooey cheese. If you need to eat your feelings, there is no better dish than this. I am SOOOOO glad there is a place like this in Portland. Truly a gem!

Yelp
There's only one guy working most of the time but he's quick. The food is always properly cooked and tastes good. The ambiance is calm there's always korean music videos or tv shows playing on the big screen. I have liked everything I have tried so far and the portions are good.

Adoree K.

Yelp
Great customer service! I was greeted with a complementary boba tea this day, which lit up my mood. As well as the feel and mood of the place. The ambiance was welcoming.

Yelp
The service was very good. Great food also, the baked rice dishes were very enjoyable!

Yelp
The cashiers are very nice and helpful. I don't go out to eat much but when I do I usually come to this spot. The food is very clean and healthy as well

Yelp
Good food. Recommend stir fried cabbage and curry chicken rice. They also offer bubble tea at the side.

Tunay H.

Yelp
The drink i got was absolutely gross it tasted like literal medicine I did not like it at all like it was a bitterly medicine taste. I Idk what I got but it definitely wasn't boba Although the drink was not it the service was great I think it's really great place just needs more drink options that aren't boba. The place is lovely but I rate it 2/10 was highly disappointed.

Yelp
What a terrible experience. We were the only people in the restaurant and ordered 3 simple meals. Waited over 30 minutes, and when we asked about it, we were greeted with a bad attitude. The guy never even apologized. If you are looking for the slowest & worst service possible, go eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite things I ate in Portland was the cheesy chicken rice. Really simple but so good. Huge portion size for the price too. Can recommend.

Yelp
This is a newer Chinese restaurant close to Hot Lips Pizza and the PSU campus. You can eat inside, get your food to go, or skip the line and order ahead. They have the standard Chinese dishes and appetizers, as well as some region specific ones. They also serve a small selection of bubble teas and hot teas (Matcha Latte). It looked pretty clean inside and , the videos of Chinese artists being broadcasted in tv while I ate was a nice addition to the place in my opinion. *Order:* Black Pepper Chicken Entree ($10.00)- Absolutely mind blowing!! Came with zucchini, onions, mushrooms, chicken, jalapeños and was placed on top of white rice. There was definitely far less salt in this meal than I've normally had at other Chinese restaurants and I loved it. Be mindful of the spice level of you don't like spicy foods. Original Boba Milk Tea ($3.50)- Some of THE best boba I've had in the Portland area. It was firm and sweet. The drink itself was also amazing. There seemed to be some kind of syrup added to the bottom of it, which was just the right amount of sweetness. *Wait time:* 2:32p-3:40p *Seating:* 5 barstools by the window, 3 fuller booth/table seating areas with 4 chairs, and 3 singular seating style tables. *Service:* Great. The male cashier was friendly. *Cost(s):* $$

Yelp

Yelp
Modern day hole-in-the-wall Chinese lunch joint. In fact, the word Jong Can literally means lunch in Chinese. Decent student pricing ($8-13) gets you a flavorful albeit average sized portion of freshly prepared semi-authentic Chinese dishes. We ordered beef chow fun, an order of honey garlic wings, and a boba tea. The noodle dish had plenty of beef and good taste (not too salty). The wings (5 pieces) were crispy and extra-flavorful. The only downside was portion size but it was commensurate with the reasonable prices. Service was order at counter and decor was spartan. In fact, you can easily walk right past this eatery (smack dab in the PSU area) if you weren't paying attention. But then you'd miss out on some of the tastiest Chinese food in Portland.

Yelp
Black Pepper Chicken was the bomb! Next time you're in downtown Portland definitely consider stopping by this place! The Honey Garlic Chicken Wings are my favorite but don't just take my word for it.. see for yourself.

Yelp
We thought this new restaurant would be a good place to eat something before going to our Broadway play. The location is perfect for walking distance from Keller. We had the beef chow fun, honey garlic chicken wings and milk boba. The portion for beef chow fun is a bit smaller but it came with lots of beef. The flavor was good and the noodle was the right kind like you would get in Hong Kong. The honey garlic chicken wings was big and meat and crunchy. So fresh. I love the sweet and salty sauce. I couldn't taste the garlic but it was very good. 5 wings for $8. I think it would be better to share of it came with 6 wings. The milk boba drink was very sweet like what other reviewers said. It was very good. I just let it melt a little and was a perfect takeout drink for us walking to Keller. Next time I am going to try the pepper chicken with rice :)

Yelp
Was getting burritos next door and this restaurant caught my eye. First because it's a Chinese place. Second because it looked nice inside. Third because there was only Chinese college students there. They were playing mandarin music videos so place seemed authentic. Felt like I was in taiwan Opted to try their drinks. Got an original boba and a taro. They say they use loose leaf teas and no powders. They took a while to make it. The drinks themselves were beautiful. Original boba was meh. Super super sweet and boba were rock hard Taro was great. Light sweet with lots of bits of taro. May come again to see how the food is.

Tomohiro M.

Yelp
I order two baked rice. It toke almost an hour to get my order. The rice in the seafood cheese baked rice was full of the smelling of dish soap and taste so bad. There was a huge piece of bone in the pork baked rice and the bone was bigger than the meat. I will never order again.

Yelp
Really tasty food and nice menu. I really enjoyed having the baked curry chicken rice. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
What a great spot. My two favorite meals are the chicken fried rice and the black pepper chicken. Bang for buck Is right where you want it. Leave with a full stomach for only 10 dollars. Great and friendly staff.

Yelp
Jong Can is a nice, local Chinese restaurant with affordable prices! I recommend getting the honey garlic chicken wings and the cheesy baked fried rice with pork chop.

Yelp
I lived in HK for more than 15 years. The baked pork chop rice is legit. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Wonderful staff and amazing food with good prices, I've always LOVED going to Jong Can!!!! My favorite place in Portland

Yelp
Good, but they used to be better. I know food costs have skyrocketed and there is new competition nearby, but they have cut down on the menu and they have been out of some of their most popular items recently...

Eli D.

Yelp
The food was great, I liked that the menu was simple and prices fair. Food was delicious, my favorite was the spicy pork belly and the Zha Zi chicken appetizer.

Yunita H.

Yelp
Very delicious and the boba tea is outstanding.. very nice service , convenient location

Yelp
Great food and clean place! Authentic Chinese food. Price is reasonable. Food portion is big. And their fried rice is awesome. Service is also great!

Yelp
New addition to PSU area, this little mom and pop Chinese restaurant is my new go to restaurant for lunch. They use good ingredients and their food is less salty and greasy than typical Chinese restaurant. Who knew you can feel healthy after eating Chinese food for lunch! Their milk tea is good (on sweeter side), boba balls chewy, and it's only $3.50! Last meal I had here was Beef Noodle Soup, which was $8.50 and tasty. I to-goed mapo tofu and beef chow fun and those were delicious as well. Will be coming back to try more food!

Giovannelli A.

Yelp
Great boba! Good service, staff is very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend!

Jason H.

Yelp
Very attractive store! The lights outside were immaculate! The store stands out from the neighbors. We loved the cozy interior design so much! The menu had pictures for all the items so it was super easy to decide and everything looked so good.
