24 Hours of Eating in Melbourne: A Food and Coffee Itinerary | Eater

"A basement-style Korean late-night institution popular with young crowds, open very late on weeknights and into the early hours on weekends; patrons gather around steaming cauldrons of bubbling soups while drinking soju and fruit slushies, and the kimchi pancake is the must-order dish—though indulgent cheesy corn is an accepted late-night treat." - Besha Rodell

Google
Hidden underground and easy to miss, but Joomak has been around for years for a reason. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, perfect for a relaxed meal. We ordered the seafood pancake which was crispy and packed with flavour, plus the half-and-half Korean fried chicken — both sauces were excellent. The sundae & suyuk was surprisingly good, and the tteokbokki tasted very traditional. So many classic Korean dishes on the menu, everything we tried was solid. A reliable spot I’d happily return to.

Cozy underground vibe that feels low-key but stylish, perfect for dates or late-night hangs. • Authentic Korean flavours with a creative twist — dishes hit hard, especially the fried chicken, stews, and pancakes. • Great drink selection, especially makgeolli and soju combos that pair beautifully with the food. • Friendly staff and a warm, intimate atmosphere that makes the place feel like a hidden gem. • Good value for the quality — portions are decent and flavours stay consistent.

Joomak is a popular Korean restaurant known for its cozy ambiance and authentic flavors. The menu features a wide variety of dishes, including tteokbokki, kimbap, grilled pork belly (Samgyeopsal), and hearty hot pots. The food is flavorful and typically stays true to Korean traditions. The service is friendly and efficient, and it’s a great place for group meals. Prices are reasonable, making it a good option for those seeking a delicious Korean dining experience. However, the restaurant can be crowded at times, and some dishes might be a bit salty for some.

I had a wonderful dining experience at Joomak. The atmosphere was warm, cozy, and very inviting, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. The food was delicious and well presented, with rich flavors that felt authentic and satisfying. I especially enjoyed the balance of seasoning and the freshness of the ingredients. The staff were friendly, attentive, and quick to help, which made the experience even better. Overall, Joomak is a fantastic restaurant that offers great food, excellent service, and a comfortable environment. I would definitely recommend it and look forward to coming back again.

One of the best late-night Korean BBQ spots in Melbourne CBD! Open until 5 am on weekends — perfect for supper with friends. Love their juicy grilled beef ribs, chewy rice cakes, and spicy seafood stew. Don’t miss the homemade peach or strawberry makgeolli — truly unforgettable!

Great vibes, cozy booth seating, and delicious food! The Korean Fried Chicken had a crunchy coating that had a mildly sweet flavour, meat was nice and juicy. Beef Rib Fingers was a highlight, tasty marinade and lovely chargrill aroma.

I got takeaway. Amazing selection of food. Fresh and hot till I got home, which was 40 min away. The soup was flavourful and the soondae was beautiful cooked. Big plus was that it opens till very late. Hard to find, since there isn't a lot of signage until to get inside the building. Then you have to walk downstairs, it's in a basement Thank you so much.

The signature seafood hot pot was amazing — rich, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. The rice wine was also really unique and delicious! Joomak has always been one of my favourite Korean spots — it’s not just great food, but also full of memories from my student days.🎉

Yelp
It's hard to find and easy to miss - Joomak is a little basememt bar right next to RMIT. You might not know what you're getting into as you walk down the stairs, but soon thumping kpop will reach your ears and you know that you're there. Staff are extremely friendly and the atmosphere is great. Patron friendly booths and sections have been partitioned for more privacy. It's easy to come in a bigger group to fill a booth out. Food wise, it's great at first taste. We got sweet and sour pork, bbq chicken and the pork soup. They were good but as time went by you'd realise that everything is a bit too sweet and starchy. We also got soju - the famous Korean rice wine. Don't splurge, whilst they are tasty, the sweetness of a bottle is enough to be shared amongst a group of 4. Overall, great staff and atmosphere and good food. Great for late night catchups with friends.

Yelp
Known for their rice wine and fruit soju! This korean bar is quite popular even though it's location is somewhat hidden. They open till late and can be quite pack at dinner time. My must order will be chicken giblets, seafood pancake and egg roll.

Yelp
Apart from having absolutely no signage out the front, I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere at Joomak when I finally found my friends! ha! Great fittings and the tables and lighting created the perfect Korean bar feeling. The Soju was reasonably priced and although the dishes were slightly on the smaller side, they tasted like true Korean bar food and that's the reason we were there!

Yelp
my favourite thing here is the flavoured soju and rice wines. i sound like an alcoholic right now but i can assure you i'm not and just enjoy the occasional drink. i usually come here for dinner with some girlfriends as one of our catch up places. it's quiet hidden as it's a basement restaurant and quiet dark. authentic korean food like; mandoo, kimchi pancakes, korean fried chicken, kimchi soup, bulgogi beef and the list just goes on.. i'm in love with korean food. it's such a comfort food when i travel so when i miss home food i try and find a korean restaurant. the staff is quiet friendly and the service is great

Yelp
Food wasn't bad, it was the service. Decided to stop by here for late night korean food, the place is hidden with no proper sign, had to call for directions. When we got there, it was after 10pm and place seemed somewhat packed. We were never approached by any server, even though many of them saw us sitting there. Finally had to get attention of one of the server and placed our order. We ordered the tofu soup, which was delicious and spicy pork bulgogi. We patiently waited for our rice for our dish which never came. Not one server came by to ask if everything was okay with our order. Finally, My husband went out to ask the server about our rice. The server said, the dish doesn't come with rice and you have to ask for it. Which i thought was very odd bc how can u eat korean food with no rice? Its like eating pho with no noodles, curry with no rice, you need RICE to eat your dish. If she would've apologized for forgetting, that's totally cool instead of coming up with something crazy. If this is true about this restaurant, something is very WRONG. Traveling from abroad, and if this is the norm in Australia that is just ludicrous!

Yelp
most rude service i have ever experienced in my life. waiter took our order and then came back after 10 minutes to tell me that i can't seat here and there are no tables available for me
